Turks really love babies
When our son Maddox was just about to turn 1 year old, we took a five day trip from Barcelona, Spain, to Istanbul, Turkey. It was mid-January, maybe not the greatest time to visit, but we had a lovely time, despite the chilly days. Maddox actually took his first steps in the Barcelona airport, which is such a cool part of his story, considering he really is a traveler! Now at 7 years old, his little feet have touched 15 countries. We arrived in the evening, and we had one contact who picked us up from the airport and brought us to our apartment. We went out everyday in Istanbul trying kebabs, baklava, Turkish coffee, Turkish bride soup and everything we could. We also explored the Grand Bazaar, The Blue Mosque, and the old historic streets. We would hear the call to prayer several times a day from wherever we were. One of our favorite memories was the 20 minute ferry ride from the European side to the Asian side, it just feels surreal to be able to touch both continents in only a matter of minutes. One time, we were sitting down in a restaurant when all of a sudden one of the waiters took Maddox out of his high chair and started to take selfies with him. That soon became a trend. They loved his striking blue eyes and big smile. Maddox is in photos with many Turkish people. He was also given small gifts like a little coin purse, a scarf, and some coins. People would always want to talk to us, because of him. It was really a special time. I was able to see how babies can connect two cultures. Even if the language is a barrier, a smile never is.
