#78 – Gli anni 50, il decennio della rinascita

Nella scena finale del film Jojo Rabbit, uscito nel 2019, i due protagonisti -un bambino tedesco e un'adolescente ebrea- ballano sulle note di David Bowie. Certo, una scelta musicale piuttosto anacronistica, ma la scena è bella e commovente.

I due ballano perché finalmente la guerra è finita e si può tornare a una vita normale.

In Italia subito dopo la fine della guerra, probabilmente qualcuno ha ballato. Qualcun altro magari non ne aveva voglia, non ne aveva la forza o semplicemente non amava ballare. Però credo che, anche solo per poco, quel senso di leggerezza dei protagonisti di Jojo Rabbit abbia coinvolto anche gli italiani e le italiane.

Dopo la leggerezza, però, è arrivata subito la fatica. Quella di ricostruire un Paese dalle fondamenta. Dopo vent'anni di fascismo e due di guerra civile, l'Italia era in ginocchio e di fronte a scelte importanti da fare.

Scelte che gli italiani e le italiane hanno preso con coraggio e lungimiranza. Sono stati uniti, poi divisi, poi di nuovo uniti. Hanno litigato molto su temi nobili e importanti, come la politica e il futuro dell'Europa. Ma anche su cose più terrene. Su chi fosse il ciclista più forte tra Fausto Coppi e Gino Bartali, su chi meritasse di vincere il primo festival di Sanremo, su chi avrebbe trionfato nel primo campionato di calcio post-bellico.

Questi milioni di italiani e italiane che fino a quel momento potevano spostarsi solo in bicicletta, lentamente hanno potuto permettersi le prime automobili, le prime motociclette e i primi televisori dove guardare insieme i primi programmi della tv pubblica, la Rai.

Oggi ti racconto gli anni '50 italiani, gli anni della speranza e della rinascita, non sempre facili, ma sicuramente affascinanti.

Può sembrare un po' illogico, ma in realtà gli anni '50 italiani iniziano nel 1948. Come abbiamo raccontato nel precedente episodio della serie di storia di Salvatore racconta, il numero 74, dal primo gennaio di quell'anno entra in vigore la Costituzione della neonata repubblica italiana. L'hanno scritta insieme i rappresentanti, eletti dal popolo, dei principali partiti antifascisti come la Democrazia Cristiana, il Partito Comunista, il Partito Socialista, il Partito Liberale, eccetera.

Come era prevedibile, dopo la fine del fascismo, le differenze di visione tra i vari partiti erano emerse con grande forza. E già durante la scrittura della costituzione erano volati gli stracci, soprattutto tra il blocco di sinistra formato dai socialisti e comunisti e il partito centrista e cattolico della Democrazia Cristiana.

Il pomo della discordia, in quel periodo così delicato, è il posizionamento internazionale dell'Italia. Il presidente del consiglio era il democristiano Alcide De Gasperi, un uomo molto legato al Vaticano e agli Stati Uniti, e che ovviamente guarda con favore al modello americano di sviluppo. Del resto, al congresso di Yalta, i leader delle potenze vincitrici hanno deciso che i Paesi dell'Europa occidentale entreranno nella sfera d'influenza americana. Eppure, in Italia la cosa non è così ovvia. Perché al governo con il democristiano De Gasperi ci sono esponenti del Partito comunista, legato ideologicamente all'Unione Sovietica e sostenuto finanziariamente da Mosca.

È chiaro a tutti che si tratta di un equilibrio appeso a un filo. Un filo che si spezza già nel 1947, quando De Gasperi parte per Washington a negoziare un piano di aiuti con gli Stati Uniti. L'Italia era in una posizione delicata. Anche se ormai è una repubblica antifascista, era entrata in guerra sotto il fascismo a fianco di Hitler. Dunque, secondo la legge internazionale, è un Paese sconfitto. Chiedere aiuto agli Stati Uniti è possibile, certo, a patto però di presentarsi con il cappello in mano e di accettare le loro condizioni. Una su tutte, isolare il partito comunista. La guerra fredda sta per iniziare, e gli americani non vogliono subito una spina nel fianco in un territorio così delicato come l'Italia.

Così De Gasperi torna da Washington a Roma e allontana dal governo i socialisti e i comunisti. L'alleanza antifascista non esiste più. Ormai non c'è più da combattere un nemico temibile, ma da scegliere il futuro dell'Italia. E per quel futuro, i piani dei democristiani e dei comunisti sono incompatibili.

Così si preparano le prime elezioni politiche del dopoguerra, quelle che eleggeranno il primo parlamento dell'Italia repubblicana.

Il partito socialista e il partito comunista decidono di partecipare con una lista elettorale comune. La chiamano il Fronte popolare e come simbolo scelgono la faccia dell'eroe risorgimentale Giuseppe Garibaldi. Sono convinti delle loro possibilità di vincere. I comunisti in particolare sono molto radicati nel territorio, con più di 3 milioni di iscritti al partito in tutta Italia. Il programma elettorale è radicale, parla di salari uguali per tutti e nazionalizzazione delle industrie, anche se naturalmente non fa il minimo riferimento alla situazione internazionale né tantomeno all'Unione Sovietica.

La democrazia cristiana partecipa da sola e non ha ancora la presenza capillare di militanti e iscritti che invece hanno i comunisti. Non gli serve, in realtà. Perché i democristiani, dalla loro parte, hanno l'appoggio della Chiesa, il che significa quello di tutte le piccole parrocchie di ogni singolo paesino della penisola. E poi quello delle associazioni cattoliche che fanno una propaganda instancabile tra le persone. I democristiani in queste elezioni capiscono bene una cosa: non è importante convincere gli elettori a votare per loro, ma è fondamentale convincerli a non votare per i comunisti. Nei manifesti elettorali dell'epoca, mostrano ad esempio scene di scheletri spaventosi vestiti da soldati dell'armata rossa o mani diaboliche con tatuati sopra una falce e un martello pronte a prendersi case, fattorie, proprietà.

Ci sono altri partiti candidati, naturalmente, ma in questo momento storico sono marginali. Ad esempio a destra c'è il Partito nazionale monarchico, che contesta la nascita della repubblica, e anche un piccolo partito che si chiama MSI, Movimento Sociale Italiano. I suoi dirigenti erano membri del partito fascista e poi sostenitori della Repubblica Sociale, lo Stato collaborazionista dei nazisti durante la guerra civile. In poche parole, sono i post-fascisti, più fascisti che post.

Nel clima bollente di quella campagna elettorale, gli italiani si dividono anche tra i due grandi sportivi dell'epoca, i ciclisti Gino Bartali e Fausto Coppi. Qualche giornalista prova a fare dei parallelismi, Bartali e Coppi come democristiani e comunisti, ma in realtà non funziona così, anche perché entrambi i ciclisti votano per la DC. Come finirà?

Si vota il 18 e il 19 aprile del 1948. E subito dopo il voto, il risultato è chiaro. Non solo Coppi e Bartali hanno votato per la DC. La democrazia cristiana ha vinto, ottenendo il 48% dei voti, la maggioranza assoluta. Al fronte popolare di socialisti e comunisti va solo il 30% e gli altri si dividono tutto il resto. Alcide De Gasperi ha vinto la sua battaglia, ha convinto gli italiani che la moderazione è un valore. Che è meglio fidarsi dei finanziamenti americani e del mantenimento dello status quo, piuttosto che credere alle pericolose promesse rivoluzionarie della sinistra.

L'Italia ha scelto per la prudenza e la tranquillità, e questo sarà un segno distintivo del suo carattere per i prossimi decenni. Nel 1948, ovviamente, ancora non lo sa nessuno, ma la Democrazia Cristiana sarà al potere per circa i prossimi cinquant'anni, anche se tra tante contraddizioni e trasformazioni.

Intanto però c'è da fare i primi passi, chiari, per la ricostruzione dell'Italia. Arrivano i soldi del piano di aiuti organizzato dagli Stati Uniti, che prende il nome di piano Marshall. E nel frattempo, l'Italia diventa uno dei Paesi fondatori della Nato, l'alleanza atlantica. A quanto pare, che un Paese fondatore della Nato abbia un partito comunista con tre milioni di iscritti sembra una contraddizione trascurabile.

Gli sforzi del governo democristiano lavorano in due direzioni: ricostruire l'Italia e ridarle dignità sullo scenario internazionale. Così, dopo l'ingresso nella Nato, l'Italia ottiene anche quello nell'Onu e ospita a Roma i lavori per la creazione della Ceka, la comunità europea del carbone e dell'acciaio, diretta antenata dell'attuale Unione europea. Tutte cose che sembravano impossibili fino a pochi anni prima.

Negli stessi anni, gli aiuti economici americani danno una spinta fondamentale per la ripartenza dell'economia. Già nel 1946, Enrico Piaggio aveva messo in commercio un motorino piccolo ed economico, destinato a diventare un simbolo degli anni '50 italiani: La Vespa. E si diffondono con velocità anche le prime automobili. Il modello più economico in commercio esiste già da un po' di tempo, e adesso è pronto a fare il botto: è la prima Fiat 500.

Ma non sono solo i motori a spingere l'Italia, c'è anche il ruolo dell'intrattenimento. Nel 1951 la piccola città ligure di Sanremo, famosa per il suo casinò, ospita la prima edizione del Festival della canzone italiana. A vincere è la cantante Nilla Pizzi con il brano Grazie dei fiori. Una canzone molto melodica, come nel gusto dell'epoca.

Tre anni dopo, nel 1954, iniziano le trasmissioni televisive della Rai. Il televisore in casa è ancora un lusso per pochi, ma la Rai organizza punti pubblici di ascolto collettivo, soprattutto per i suoi programmi di pubblica utilità come il famoso Non è mai troppo tardi!, dove un vero maestro di scuola insegna i concetti elementari davanti a una lavagna per tutti quegli adulti analfabeti ancora presenti in Italia.

E non è finita qui. Grazie allo zelo di un giovane sottosegretario di nome Giulio Andreotti (parleremo mooolto di lui), spicca il volo il progetto di Cinecittà, l'ambiziosa Hollywood sul Tevere. Ovvero, una serie di studi cinematografici costruiti nella periferia di Roma per ospitare grandi produzioni internazionali. In quel periodo, vanno forte i kolossal ambientati in contesti biblici o classici, e Roma naturalmente ha molto da offrire a riguardo. Due grandi film dell'epoca, girati nella città eterna, sono per esempio Quo Vadis e Ben Hur.

Gli anni Cinquanta però non sono tutti rose e fiori, e non mancano i problemi, soprattutto di natura politica. Innanzitutto, lentamente, l'Italia perde il controllo sulle sue ex-colonie africane, ma quasi nessuno per il momento fa i conti con i crimini e le responsabilità del colonialismo.

Ma a fare i conti con la storia, in quel periodo, è soprattutto il Partito Comunista. Nel 1953, in Unione Sovietica, muore Stalin. Il giornale ufficiale del PCI lo annuncia con un titolo che oggi suona lascia impietriti: Gloria eterna all'uomo che più di tutti ha fatto per la liberazione e per il progresso dell'umanità. È un titolo agiografico, ma che in realtà nasconde un dibattito profondo dentro il mondo dei comunisti italiani. Alcuni cominciano a sospettare che il modello sovietico non sia proprio impeccabile. E la cosa peggiora tre anni dopo, quando i carri armati russi entrano a Budapest per soffocare la rivoluzione d'Ungheria. In quell'occasione, le strade di comunisti e socialisti si separano per sempre.

I democristiani nel frattempo continuano a governare. La DC vince le elezioni pure nel 1953 e nel 1958, anche se questa volta non da sola, ma con dei piccoli alleati moderati. Il grande partito centrista perde però il suo grande dirigente. Nel 1954 infatti muore Alcide De Gasperi, il vero artefice della grande stagione della rinascita e simbolo dell'Italia nel mondo.

Dopo la morte di De Gasperi, improvvisamente vengono fuori tanti scheletri nell'armadio della Democrazia Cristiana. Il partito in quegli anni è diventato potente, e sempre più persone vogliono un pezzo di quella torta.

Insomma, negli anni '50 l'Italia è rinata. Il fascismo sembra acqua passata, l'economia cresce, c'è il benessere e sono quasi tutti contenti che i comunisti non abbiano vinto le elezioni. La parola d'ordine sembra per tutti una sola: tranquillità.

Lavorare, risparmiare, andare in chiesa o a giocare a carte, ogni tanto anche al cinema o allo stadio. E poi guardare il ciclismo, che tanto, quando passa per le strade della tua città, lo puoi ammirare gratis. Inoltre, una piccola grande soddisfazione. Nel 1960 ci saranno i Giochi Olimpici e il governo ha ottenuto che si tengano a Roma.

Sembra tutto perfetto, quasi idilliaco. E infatti non è molto vero. Dieci anni sono tanti, ci sono dentro tante cose, e tante novità sono pronte ad arrivare sullo scenario italiano del decennio successivo. Gli anni ‘60 saranno quelli della Dolce Vita, ma anche dei primi scontri di piazza e della nascita del terrorismo politico.

Questa però è una storia di cui parleremo la prossima volta.
