「三 」野 分 夏目 漱石

檜 の 扉 に 銀 の ような 瓦 を 載せた 門 を 這入る と 、御影 の 敷石 に 水 を 打って 、斜めに 十 歩 ばかり 歩ま せる 。 敷石 の 尽きた 所 に 擦り 硝子 （ ガラス ） の 開き戸 が 左右 から 寂 然 と 鎖 されて 、 秋 の 更 くる に 任す が ごとく 邸 内 は 物静かである 。 磨き上げた 、柾 の 柱 に 象牙 の 臍 を ちょっと 押す と 、しばらく して 奥 の 方 から 足音 が 近づいて くる 。 が ちゃ と 鍵 を ひねる 。 玄関 の 扉 は 左右 に 開かれて 、下 は 鏡 の ような たたき と なる 。 右 の 方 に 周囲 一 尺 余 の 朱泥 まがい の 鉢 が あって 、鉢 の なか に は 棕梠 竹 が 二三 本 靡く べき 風 も 受け ず に 、ひそやかに 控えている 。 正面 に は 高さ 四尺 の 金屏 に 、三条 の 小鍛冶 が 、異形 の もの を 相槌 に 、霊夢 に 叶う 、御門 の 太刀 を 丁 と 打ち 、丁 と 打って いる 。 取次 に 出た の は 十八九 の しとやかな 下女 である 。 白井 道也 と 云う 名刺 を 受取った まま 、あの 若旦那 様 で ？ と 聞く 。 道也 先生 は 首 を 傾けて ちょっと 考えた 。 若 旦那 に も 大 旦那 に も 中野 と 云う 人 に 逢う の は 今 が 始めて である 。 ことに よる と まるで 逢え ないで 帰る かも 計られ ん 。 若 旦那 か 大 旦那 か は 逢って 始めて わかる のである 。 あるいは 分 ら ないで 生涯 それ ぎり に なる かも 知れ ない 。 今 まで 訪問 に 出 懸けて 、年寄 か 、小供 か 、跛 か 、眼っかち か 、要領 を 得る 前 に 門前 から 追い還さ れた 事 は 何遍 も ある 。 追い 還 さ れ さえ しなければ 大 旦那 か 若 旦那 か は 問う ところ で ない 。 しかし 聞か れた 以上 は どっち か 片づけ なければ ならん 。 どうでも いい 事 を 、 どうでも よくない よう に 決断 しろ と 逼 ら る る 事 は 賢者 が 愚 物 に 対して 払う 租税 である 。 「大学 を 御 卒業 に なった 方 の ……」と まで 云った が 、ことに よる と 、おやじ も 大学 を 卒業 している かも 知れん と 心づいた から 「あの 文学 を おやり になる 」と 訂正した 。 下 女 は 何とも 云わずに 御辞儀 を して 立って 行く 。 白 足袋 の 裏 だけ が 目立って よごれて 見える 。 道也 先生 の 頭 の 上 に は 丸く 鉄 を 鋳抜いた 、かな 灯籠 が ぶら下がって いる 。 波 に 千鳥 を すかして 、すかした 所 に 紙 が 張って ある 。 この なか へ 、どう したら 灯 が つけられる の か と 、先生 は 仰向いて 長い 鎖 り を 眺め ながら 考えた 。 下 女 が また 出て くる 。 どうぞ こちら へ と 云う 。 道也 先生 は 親指 の 凹んで 、前 緒 の ゆるんだ 下駄 を 立派な 沓 脱 へ 残して 、ひょろ 長い 糸瓜 の ような からだ を 下女 の 後ろ から 運んで 行く 。 応接間 は 西洋式 に 出来て いる 。 丸い 卓 （ テーブル ） に は 、 薔薇 の 花 を 模様 に 崩した 五六 輪 を 、 淡い 色 で 織り 出した テーブル 掛 を 、 雑 作 も なく 引き 被せて 、 末 は 同じ 色合 の 絨毯 と 、 続 づく が ごとく 、 切れ たる が ごとく 、 波 を 描いて 床 の 上 に 落ちて いる 。 暖炉 は 塞いだ まま の 一 尺 前 に 、二 枚 折 の 小 屏風 を 穴 隠し に 立てて ある 。 窓 掛 は 緞子 の 海老 茶色 だ から 少々 全体 の 装飾 上 調和 を 破る ようだ が 、そんな 事 は 道也 先生 の 眼 に は 入ら ない 。 先生 は 生れて から いまだかつて こんな 奇麗な 室 へ 這 入った 事 は ない のである 。 先生 は 仰いで 壁 間 の 額 を 見た 。 京 の 舞子 が 友禅 の 振袖 に 鼓 を 調べている 。 今 打って 、鼓 から 、白い 指 が 弾き 返さ れた ばかりの 姿 が 、小指 の 先 まで よく あらわれている 。 しかし 、そんな 事 に 気 の つく 道也 先生 で は ない 。 先生 は ただ 気品 の ない 画 を 掛けた もの だ と 思った ばかりである 。 向 の 隅 に ヌーボー 式 の 書棚 が あって 、美しい 洋書 の 一部 が 、窓掛 の 隙間 から 洩れて 射す 光線 に 、金 文字 の 甲羅 を 干して いる 。 なかなか 立派 である 。 しかし 道也 先生 これ に は 毫 も 辟易 し なかった 。 ところ へ 中野 君 が 出て くる 。 紬 の 綿 入 に 縮緬 の 兵 子 帯 を ぐるぐる 巻きつけて 、 金 縁 の 眼鏡 越 に 、 道也 先生 を ま ぼ し そうに 見て 、「 や 、 御 待た せ 申し まして 」 と 椅子 へ 腰 を おろす 。 道也 先生 は 、あやしげな 、銘 仙 の 上 を 蔽う に 黒 木綿 の 紋付 を もって して 、嘉 平次 平 の 下 へ 両手 を 入れた まま 、「どうも 御邪魔 を します 」と 挨拶 を する 。 泰然 たる もの だ 。 中野 君 は 挨拶 が 済んで から も 、依然と して まぼしそうに していた が 、やがて 思い切った 調子 で 「あなた が 、白井 道也 と おっしゃる んで 」と 大 なる 好奇心 を もって 聞いた 。 聞か ん でも 名刺 を 見れば わかる はずだ 。 それ を かよう に 聞く の は 世 馴れぬ 文学士 だ から である 。 「はい 」と 道也 先生 は 落ちついて いる 。 中野 君 の あて は 外れた 。 中野 君 は 名刺 を 見た 時 はっと 思って 、頭 の なか は 追い出さ れた 中学校 の 教師 だけ に なって いる 。 可哀想 だ と 云う 念頭 に 尾羽 うち 枯らした 姿 を 目前 に 見て 、あなた が 、あの 中学校 で 生徒 から いじめられた 白井 さん です か と 聞き 糺し たくて ならない 。 いくら 気の毒で も 白井 違い で 気の毒 がった ので は 役 に 立たない 。 気の毒 がる ために は 、聞き 糺す ために は 「あなた が 白井 道也 と おっしゃる んで 」と 切り出さ なくって は ならなかった 。 しかし せっかく の 切り出し よう も 泰然たる 「はい 」の ために 無駄死 を してしまった 。 初心 なる 文学 士 は 二 の 句 を つぐ 元気 も 作 略 も ない のである 。 人 に 同情 を 寄せたい と 思う とき 、 向 が 泰 然 の 具 足 で 身 を 固めて いて は 芝居 に は なら ん 。 器用な もの は この 泰然 の 一角 を 針 で 突き 透して も 思 を 遂げる 。 中野 君 は 好 人物 ながら それほど に 人 を 取り扱い 得る ほど 世の中 を 知ら ない 。 「 実は 今日 御邪魔 に 上がった の は 、 少々 御 願 が あって 参った の です が 」 と 今度 は 道也 先生 の 方 から 打って出る 。 御 願 は 同情 の 好敵手 である 。 御 願 を 持た ない人 に は 同情 する 張り 合 が ない 。 「は あ 、何でも 出来ます 事 なら 」と 中野 君 は 快く 承知 した 。 「 実は 今度 江 湖 雑誌 で 現代 青年 の 煩 悶 に 対する 解決 と 云 う 題 で 諸 先生 方 の 御 高 説 を 発表 する 計画 が あり まして 、 それ で 普通の 大家 ばかり で は 面白くない と 云 う ので 、 なるべく 新しい 方 も それぞれ 訪問 する 訳 に なりました ので ―― そこ で 実は ちょっと 往って 来て くれ と 頼まれて 来た の です が 、 御 差 支 が なければ 、 御 話 を 筆記 して 参りたい と 思います 」 道也 先生 は 静かに 懐 から 手帳 と 鉛筆 を 取り出した 。 取り出し は した もの の 別に 筆記 したい 様子 も なければ 強いて 話させたい 景色 も 見えない 。 彼 は かかる 愚 な 問題 を 、かかる 青年 の 口 から 解決 して 貰いたい と は 考えて いない 。 「 なるほど 」 と 青年 は 、 耀 やく 眼 を 挙げて 、 道也 先生 を 見た が 、 先生 は 宵 越 の 麦酒 （ ビール ） の ごとく 気 の 抜けた 顔 を して いる ので 、 今度 は 「 さよう 」 と 長く 引っ張って 下 を 向いて しまった 。 「どう でしょう 、何か 御説 は あります まいか 」と 催促 を 義理 ずくめ に する 。 ありません と 云ったら 、すぐ 帰る 気 かも 知れない 。 「そう です ね 。 あったって 、 僕 の ような もの の 云 う 事 は 雑誌 へ 載せる 価値 は ありません よ 」 「 いえ 結構 です 」 「 全体 どこ から 、 聞いて い らしった ん です 。 あまり 突然 じゃ 纏った 話 の 出来る はず が ない です から 」「御 名前 は 社主 が 折々 雑誌 の 上 で 拝見 する そうで 」「いえ 、どう し まして 」と 中野 君 は 横 を 向いた 。 「何でも よい です から 、少し 御 話し 下さい 」「そう です ね 」と 青年 は 窓 の 外 を 見て 躊躇 している 。 「せっかく 来た もの です から 」「じゃ 何 か 話しましょう 」「は あ 、どうぞ 」と 道也 先生 鉛筆 を 取り上げた 。 「いったい 煩悶 と 云う 言葉 は 近頃 だいぶ はやる ようだ が 、大抵 は 当座 の もの で 、いわゆる 三日坊主 の もの が 多い 。 そんな 種類 の 煩悶 は 世の中 が 始まって から 、世の中 が なくなる まで 続く ので 、ちっとも 問題 に は なら ない でしょう 」「ふん 」と 道也 先生 は 下 を 向いた なり 、鉛筆 を 動かしている 。 紙 の 上 を 滑らす 音 が 耳 立って 聞える 。 「しかし 多く の 青年 が 一度 は 必ず 陥る 、また 必ず 陥る べく 自然 から 要求 せられている 深刻な 煩悶 が 一つ ある 。 ……」鉛筆 の 音 が する 。 「それ は 何 だ と 云う と ――恋 である ……」道也 先生 は ぴたり と 筆記 を やめて 、妙な 顔 を して 、相手 を 見た 。 中野 君 は 、今さら 気 が ついた ように ちょっと しょげ返った が 、すぐ 気 を 取り 直して 、あと を つづけた 。 「ただ 恋 と 云う と 妙に 御 聞き に なる かも 知れ ない 。 また 近頃 は あまり 恋愛 呼ばり を する の を 人 が 遠慮 する ようである が 、この 種 の 煩悶 は 大 なる 事実 であって 、事実 の 前 に は いかなる もの も 頭 を 下げねばならぬ 訳だ から どうする 事も 出来ない のである 」道也 先生 は また 顔 を あげた 。 しかし 彼 の 長い 蒼白い 相貌 の 一微塵 だ も 動いて おらん から 、彼 の 心 の うち は 無論 わからない 。 「我々 が 生涯 を 通じて 受ける 煩悶 の うち で 、もっとも 痛切な もっとも 深刻な 、また もっとも 劇烈な 煩悶 は 恋 より ほかに ないだろう と 思う のです 。 それ で です ね 、こう 云う 強大な 威力 の ある もの だから 、我々 が 一度 び この 煩悶 の 炎火 の うち に 入る と 非常な 変形 を うける のです 」「変形 ？ です か 」「ええ 形 を 変ずる のです 。 今 まで は ただ ふわふわ 浮いて いた 。 世の中 と 自分 の 関係 が よく わから ないで 、のんべんぐらりん に 暮らしていた のが 、急に 自分 が 明瞭に なる んです 」「自分 が 明瞭 とは ？ 」「自分 の 存在 が です 。 自分 が 生きて いる ような 心持ち が 確然 と 出て くる のです 。 だから 恋 は 一方 から 云えば 煩悶 に 相違 ない が 、しかし この 煩悶 を 経過し ない と 自分 の 存在 を 生涯 悟る 事 が 出来ない のです 。 この 浄罪界 に 足 を 入れた もの で なければ けっして 天国 へ は 登れ まい と 思う のです 。 ただ 楽天 だって しようがない 。 恋 の 苦み を 甞めて 人生 の 意義 を 確かめた 上の 楽天 で なくっちゃ 、うそ です 。 それ だ から 恋 の 煩悶 は けっして 他の 方法 に よって 解決 さ れない 。 恋 を 解決 する もの は 恋 より ほか に ないで す 。 恋 は 吾人 を して 煩悶 せ しめて 、また 吾人 を して 解脱 せ しむ る のである 。 ……」 「 その くらい な ところ で 」 と 道也 先生 は 三 度 目 に 顔 を 挙げた 。 「まだ 少し ある んです が ……」「承る の は いい です が 、だいぶ 多人数 の 意見 を 載せる つもりです から 、かえって あとから 削除する と 失礼に なります から 」「そうですか 、それじゃ そのくらい に して 置きましょう 。 何だか こんな 話 を する の は 始めて です から 、さぞ 筆記 し にくかった でしょう 」「いいえ 」と 道也 先生 は 手帳 を 懐 へ 入れた 。 青年 は 筆記 者 が 自分 の 説 を 聴いて 、感心 の 余り 少し は 賛辞 でも 呈する か と 思った が 、相手 は 例 の ごとく 泰然 として ただ いいえ と 云った のみ である 。 「いや これ は 御邪魔 を しました 」と 客 は 立ち かける 。 「まあ いい でしょう 」と 中野 君 は とめた 。 せめて 自分 の 説 を 少々 でも 批評 して 行って 貰いたい のである 。 それ で なくて も 、せんだって 日比谷 で 聞いた 高柳 君 の 事 を ちょっと 好奇心 から 、あたって 見たい のである 。 一言 に して 云えば 中野 君 は ひまな のである 。 「いえ 、せっかく です が 少々 急ぎます から 」と 客 は もう 椅子 を 離れて 、一歩 テーブル を 退いた 。 いかに ひまな 中野 君 も 「それでは 」と ついに 降参 して 御辞儀 を する 。 玄関 まで 送って 出た 時 思い切って 「あなた は 、もしや 高柳 周作 と 云う 男 を 御存じ じゃない ですか 」と 念晴らし の ため 聞いて 見る 。 「 高柳 ？ どうも 知ら ん ようです 」と 沓 脱 から 片足 を タタキ へ おろして 、高い 背 を 半分 後ろ へ 捩じ 向けた 。 「ことし 大学 を 卒業 した ……」「それ じゃ 知らん 訳 だ 」と 両足 とも タタキ の 上 へ 運んだ 。 中野 君 は まだ 何 か 云 おうと した 時 、 敷石 を がらがら と 車 の 軋 る 音 が して 梶 棒 は 硝子 （ ガラス ） の 扉 の 前 に とまった 。 道也 先生 が 扉 を 開く 途端 に 車上 の 人 は ひらり 厚い 雪 駄 を 御影 の 上 に 落した 。 五色 の 雲 が わが 眼 を 掠めて 過ぎた 心持ち で 往来 へ 出る 。 時計 は もう 四 時 過ぎ である 。 深い 碧 り の 上 へ 薄い セピヤ を 流した 空 の なか に 、はっきり せぬ 鳶 が 一羽 舞って いる 。 雁 は まだ 渡って 来ぬ 。 向 から 袴 の 股 立ち を 取った 小 供 が 唱歌 を 謡いながら 愉快 そうに あるいて 来た 。 肩 に 担いだ 笹 の 枝 に は 草 の 穂 で 作った 梟 が 踊り ながら ぶら下がって 行く 。 おおかた 雑 子 ヶ 谷 へ でも 行った のだろう 。 軒 の 深い 菓物屋 の 奥 の 方 に 柿 ばかり が あかるく 見える 。 夕 暮 に 近づく と 何となく うそ 寒い 。 薬 王寺 前 に 来た の は 、帽子 の 庇 の 下 から 往来 の 人 の 顔 が しかと 見分け の つかぬ 頃 である 。 三十三 所 と 彫って ある 石 標 を 右 に 見て 、紺屋 の 横町 を 半丁 ほど 西 へ 這入る と わが家 の 門口 へ 出る 、家 の なか は 暗い 。 「おや 御 帰り 」と 細 君 が 台所 で 云う 。 台所 も 玄関 も 大した 相違 の ない ほど 小さな 家 である 。 「下 女 は どっか へ 行った の か 」と 二 畳 の 玄関 から 、六 畳 の 座敷 へ 通る 。 「ちょっと 、柳町 まで 使 に 行きました 」と 細 君 は また 台所 へ 引き返す 。 道也 先生 は 正面 の 床 の 片隅 に 寄せて あった 、洋灯 （ランプ ）を 取って 、椽側 へ 出て 、手 ず から 掃除 を 始めた 。 何 か 原稿用紙 の ような もの で 、油壺 を 拭き 、ほや を 拭き 、最後に 心 の 黒い 所 を 好い加減に なすくって 、丸めた 紙 は 庭 へ 棄てた 。 庭 は 暗く なって 様子 が 頓 と わから ない 。 机 の 前 へ 坐った 先生 は 燐 寸 （ マッチ ） を 擦って 、 しゅっと 云 う 間 に 火 を ランプ に 移した 。 室 は たちまち 明か に なる 。 道也 先生 の ため に 云えば むしろ 明かるく ならぬ 方が 増しである 。 床 は ある が 、言訳 ばかり で 、現に 幅 も 何も 懸って おらん 。 その代り 累々 と 書物 やら 、原稿 紙 やら 、手帳 やら が 積んで ある 。 机 は 白木 の 三 宝 を 大きく した くらい な 単 簡 な もの で 、 インキ 壺 と 粗末な 筆 硯 の ほか に は 何物 を も 載せて おら ぬ 。 装飾 は 道也 先生 に とって 不必要 である の か 、または 必要 でも これ に 耽る 余裕 が ない の か は 疑問 である 。 ただ 道也 先生 が この 一 点 の 温気 なき 陋室 に 、晏如 として 筆 硯 を 呵す る の 勇気 ある は 、外部 より 見て 争う べからざる 事実 である 。 ことに よる と 先生 は 装飾 以外 の ある もの を 目的 に して 、生活 している の かも 知れない 。 ただ この 争う べ から ざる 事実 を 確めれば 、確かめる ほど 細君 は 不愉快である 。 女 は 装飾 を もって 生れ 、装飾 を もって 死ぬ 。 多数 の 女 は わが 運命 を 支配 する 恋 さえ も 装飾 視 して 憚 から ぬ もの だ 。 恋 が 装飾 ならば 恋 の 本尊 たる 愛人 は 無論 装飾 品 である 。 否 、自己 自身 すら 装飾品 を もって 甘んずる のみ ならず 、装飾品 を もって 自己 を 目して くれぬ 人 を 評して 馬鹿 と 云う 。 しかし 多数 の 女 は しかく 人 世 を 観 ずる に も かかわらず 、しかく 観 ずる と は けっして 思わ ない 。 ただ 自己 の 周囲 を 纏 綿 する 事物 や人間 が この 装飾 用 の 目的 に 叶わ ぬ を 発見 する とき 、 何となく 不愉快 を 受ける 。 不愉快 を 受ける と 云う のに 周囲 の 事物 人間 が 依然と して 旧態 を あらためぬ 時 、わが 眼 に 映ずる 不愉快 を 左右 前後 に 反射して 、これ でも 改めぬ か と 云う 。 ついに は これ でも か 、これ でも か と 念入り の 不愉快 を 反射 する 。 道也 の 細 君 が ここ まで 進歩 して いる か は 疑問 である 。 しか し 普通 一般 の 女性 である からに は 装飾 気 なき この 空気 の うち に 生息 する 結果 として 、自然 この 方向 に 進行 する のが 順当であろう 。 現に 進行 し つつ ある かも 知れ ぬ 。 道也 先生 は やがて 懐 から 例の 筆記帳 を 出して 、原稿紙 の 上 へ 写し始めた 。 袴 を 着けた まま である 。 かしこまった まま である 。 袴 を 着けた まま 、かしこまった まま で 、中野 輝一 の 恋愛 論 を 筆記 している 。 恋 と この 室 、恋 と この 道也 と は とうてい 調和 し ない 。 道也 は 何 と 思って 浄書 して いる か しらん 。 人 は 様々 である 、世 も 様々 である 。 様々 の 世 に 、様々 の 人 が 動く の も また 自然 の 理 である 。 ただ 大きく 動く もの が 勝ち 、深く 動く もの が 勝た ねば ならぬ 。 道也 は 、あの 金 縁 の 眼鏡 を 掛けた 恋愛 論 より も 、小さく かつ 浅い と 自覚 して 、かく 慎重に 筆記 を 写し 直して いる のであろう か 。 床 の 後ろ で が 鳴いて いる 。 細 君 が 襖 を すう と 開けた 。 道也 は 振り向き も し ない 。 「まあ 」と 云った なり 細 君 の 顔 は 隠れた 。 下 女 は 帰った ようである 。 煮豆 が 切れた から 、てっか 味噌 を 買って 来た と 云って いる 。 豆腐 が 五 厘 高く なった と 云って いる 。 裏 の 専念寺 で 夕 の 御務め を かあんかあん やっている 。 細 君 の 顔 が また 襖 の 後ろ から 出た 。 「あなた 」道也 先生 は 、いつの間に やら 、筆記帳 を 閉じて 、今度 は また 別の 紙 へ 、何か 熱心に 認めている 。 「あなた 」と 妻君 は 二 度 呼んだ 。 「何 だい 」「御飯 です 」「そう か 、今 行く よ 」道也 先生 は ちょっと 細君 と 顔 を 合せたぎり 、すぐ 机 へ 向った 。 細 君 の 顔 も すぐ 消えた 。 台所 の 方 で くすくす 笑う 声 が する 。 道也 先生 は この 一節 を かき 終る まで は 飯 も 食い たく ない のだろう 。 やがて 句切り の よい 所 へ 来た と 見えて 、 ちょっと 筆 を 擱 いて 、 傍 へ 積んだ 草稿 を はぐって 見て 「 二百三十一 頁 （ ページ ）」 と 独語 した 。 著述 でも して いる と 見える 。 立って 次の 間 へ 這 入る 。 小さな 長火鉢 に 平 鍋 が かかって 、白い 豆腐 が 煙り を 吐いて 、ぷる ぷる 顫えて いる 。 「湯豆腐 かい 」「は あ 、何にも なくて 、御気の毒です が ……」「何 、なんでも いい 。 食って さえ いれば 何でも 構わない 」と 、膳 に して 重箱 を かねたる ごとき 四角な もの の 前 へ 坐って 箸 を 執る 。 「あら 、まだ 袴 を 御 脱ぎ なさらない の 、随分 ね 」と 細君 は 飯 を 盛った 茶碗 を 出す 。 「 忙 が しい もの だ から 、 つい 忘れた 」 「 求めて 、 忙 が しい 思 を して いらっしゃる のだ から 、……」 と 云った ぎり 、 細 君 は 、 湯豆腐 の 鍋 と 鉄瓶 と を 懸け 換える 。 「そう 見える かい 」と 道也 先生 は 存外 平気 である 。 「だって 、楽 で 御金 の 取れる 口 は 断って おしまい な すって 、忙がしくって 、一文 に も ならない 事 ばかり なさる んです もの 、誰 だって 酔興 と思います わ 」「思われて も しようがない 。 これ が おれ の 主義 な んだ から 」「あなた は 主義 だ から それ で いい でしょう さ 。 しかし 私 は ……」「御前 は 主義 が 嫌だ と 云う の か ね 」「嫌 も 好 も ない んです けれども 、せめて ――人並に
