||||climbed|||embankment||||jumped
To recognize himself there, he climbed the embankment from which he had jumped.

Slowly and with difficulty, as on the way out, he guided himself between the grass and the water, through the willow fences, and went to look for his car in the back of the meadow where he had left it.
||||||||beating|||||||||||||||||||collar|||
The car was no longer there ... Motionless, his head pounding, he tried to listen to all the noises of the night, believing at every second to hear the beast's collar ringing nearby.
Rien...
|||||||||||||||overturned|||||||||over
Nothing ... He walked around the meadow; the barrier was half open, half overturned, as if a car wheel had passed over it.
|mare|||||||
The mare must have escaped by herself that way.

Retracing||||||||got tangled|||||||||||||||
Going up the path, he took a few steps and entangled his feet in the blanket which had no doubt slipped from the mare to the ground.
He concluded that the beast had fled in that direction.
Il se prit à courir.
He began to run.

With no other idea than the tenacious and mad desire to catch up with his car, all blood in his face, in the grip of this panic-like desire that resembled fear, he ran ... Sometimes his foot stumbled in the ruts.
|turns|||||||||fences|||||||||fell|||thorns||||||tearing|||||||
At the bends, in total darkness, he threw himself against the fences, and, already too tired to stop in time, fell on the thorns, his arms forward, tearing his hands to protect his face.
Parfois, il s’arrêtait, écoutait--et repartait.
|||||left
Sometimes he would stop, listen - and walk away.
|||||||||||||Kipper|ratternd|||||||||
|||||||||||||tumbrel|jolting|||||||||
For a moment he thought he heard the noise of a car; but it was only a bumping dumpster that passed very far, on a road, to the left ...
|||||||||||||||||||steif
Came|||||||||||||||||||stiff
There came a time when his knee, injured in the footstool, hurt so much that he had to stop, his leg stiffened.
||||||mare||||saved||||||||joined
So he reflected that if his mare hadn't been saved at full gallop, he would have joined her long ago.
|||||||||||||||would find|
He also told himself that a car could not be lost like this and that someone would find it well.
||||||exhausted|||||
Finally he retraced his steps, exhausted, angry, barely dragging himself.
|||||||||vicinity||||||||||||||
At length, he thought he found himself in the area he had left, and soon he saw the light of the house he was looking for.
||||||hedge
A deep path opened in the hedge:
"This is the path the old man told me about," Augustin said to himself.

||||||||||||||||terras
And he entered this passage, happy to no longer have to cross the hedges and the embankments.
||||||||left||||||||reached|||crossroad|||||||||||lodging||||||||||
After a moment, the path deviating to the left, the light seemed to slide to the right, and, having reached a crossroads, Meaulnes, in his haste to regain the poor lodging, followed without thinking a path which seemed to lead directly there. .
|||||||||||||||||||||Hecke||||||||||
|||||||||||||||||||||||||peasants|||had|||shutters
But hardly had he taken ten steps in that direction when the light disappeared, either because it was hidden by a hedge, or when the peasants, tired of waiting, had closed their shutters.
|||||fields||||||||||||||
Bravely, the schoolboy jumped across the fields, walked straight in the direction where the light had shone earlier.
||||fence||fell||||
Then, crossing another fence, he fell back onto a new path ...
||||got tangled||||||||broke|||||||||
Little by little, the trail of the great Meaulnes got confused and the link which attached him to those he had left was broken.
|||||||resolved|||||follow|||||
Discouraged, almost at the end of his strength, he resolved, in his despair, to follow this path to the end.
|||||||||||||||||||||||||Wacholder|||||||||

A hundred paces from there, it emerged into a large gray meadow, where one could distinguish from time to time shadows which must have been junipers, and a dark building in a fold of the ground.
Meaulnes s’en approcha.
||approached
Meaulnes approached it.
||||sort|||||cattle|or||sheepfold|
It was only a sort of large cattle yard or abandoned sheepfold.
La porte céda avec un gémissement.
|||||groan
The door gave way with a moan.

The moonlight, when the strong wind chased the clouds, passed through the cracks in the partitions.
Une odeur de moisi régnait.
|||Schimmel|
|||mold|
A musty smell reigned.
|||||stretched|||straw|||elbow|||||||
Without looking any further, Meaulnes stretched out on the damp straw, elbow on the ground, head in hand.
||||||verkrümmte|||||||
|removed|||||curled up|||||||
|||||||||blusa||||
Having removed his belt, he curled up in his blouse, knees to his stomach.
|thought|||||||||||||||||||||angry|||||||||||
||||la|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
He thought about the blanket of the mare he had left in the path, and he felt so miserable, so angry with himself that he made a strong urge to cry ...
So he tried to think of something else.

Frozen to the core, he remembered a dream - rather a vision that he had had as a child, and that he had never told anyone about: one morning, instead of waking up in his room, where His breeches and overcoats were hanging down, he had found himself in a long green room, with hangings like leaves.
|||||||||||||taste
In this place flowed a light so soft that one would have thought to be able to taste it.
||||||||was sewing|||||||||||||||||||||||||dwelling|enchanted
Near the first window, a young girl was sewing, her back turned, seeming to be waiting for her to wake up ... He had not had the strength to slip out of his bed to walk in this enchanted house.
||fell asleep||||||||||
He had fallen asleep again ... But next time he swore to get up.
Demain matin, peut-être!...
Tomorrow morning, perhaps! ...
