1年生 の 教室 に 向かう 途中 、大田 先生 は そう 言って にこり と 笑った 。 大田 先生 は イングリッシュ を よく 使う 40 代 後半 と 思しき 黒髪 の 女性 だ 。 人生 の 大半 小学生 と 一緒に 過ごして きた せい か 、 レインボー 小学校 国語 辞典 に 乗って いる 言葉 しか 使わ ず 、「 すご 〜〜 い 」 と 言う ふうに 形容詞 を よく 伸ばす 。 たとえ 相手 は 郵便局 の 配達員 であって も だ 。

「皆 昨日 から ドウゲン 先生 に 早く 会いたい って 言って いる わ 」 「そう です か ？ 楽しみ です ね 」笑い ながら も 僕 は 動機 が 激しく なる の を 感じた 。 小学校 1 年生 の 授業 初めて だ 。 どう なる か 分から ない 。

「ドーゲン 先生 、ここ です 。 ヒヤー 」

１Aと 書かれて いた 教室 の 前 で 立ち とまる 。 ふっと 思い出して 僕 は 大田 先生 に 話 かけた 。

「おはよう ございます ！」

帰りたい 、今 すぐ 帰りたい と 思い つつ 、仕方なくて 狂気 に 足 を 踏み入れる 。 動物園 の 匂い が 鼻 を つく 。 とにかく 暑い 。

僕 は 水たまり の 左手 に 目線 を 移す 。 落葉 しきった 大木 、その 枝 に よじ登る 三匹 の 猿 。 梢 の てっぺん に は でっかい ウランウータン 。 ライオン たち に 向かって 糞 を 投げて いる 。 何 です か 、これ ？

僕 は 思わず そういう と 大田 先生 の 方 へ 向く 。 そこ で 自分 の すぐ 後ろ に 象 が 歩いている こと に 気付き 心臓 が 飛び出し そうに なる 、

「 うん ？ ワンモアータイム 」

笑み を 倒さ ない 大田 先生 。 象 が 去って いく の を 見計らい づつ 、僕 は もう 一度 聞く 。

生徒 たち は どこ です か ？」

大田 先生 は ぐ ふ ふと 笑った 。

「道元 先生 の 、そういう ジョーク を 言う ところ 、いい です ね 」

答え に なって いない 答え に 不安 が 募る 。 水たまり の 方 に 目 を やる と 、カバ が 蛇 に 噛み付いて いた 。

では 、今 から 道元 先生 が 体 の 部分 を 紹介 して くれます 」 思わず と 、大田 先生 の 方 に 視線 を 戻す 。
