祐一 は ハンドル を 握った まま 、じっと 森 の 赤い 眼 を 見つめて いた 。 峠 だけ が 呼吸 して いる ようだった 。 次の 瞬間 、車 の ルーム ライト が ついた 。 光 の 中 、佳乃 と 男 の 影 が 動い た 。 あっという間 だった 。 ドア が 開き 、佳乃 が 降りよう と した 。 その 背中 を 男 が 蹴った のだ 。 佳乃 は 車 に 跳ねられた 動物 の ようだった 。 路肩 に 崩れ落ち 、 後 頭部 を ガードレー ル で 強打 した 。 うずく ま ガード レール を 背 に 跨った 佳乃 を 置いて 、男 の 車 が 走り出す 。 祐一 は 一瞬 、自分 が 何 を 見た の か 分から なく なり 、慌てて 男 の 車 を 追おう と した 。 しかし サイド ブレーキ を 下 ろ した 途端 、 道ばた に 置き去り に された 佳乃 の 姿 が 、 車 の 走り去った 後 の 風景 に 、 ぽつ ん と 残されて いる の が 見えた 。 テールランプ に 染まった 佳乃 の 姿 は 、まるで 燃えて いる ようだった 。 祐一 は サイド ブレーキ を 引き 直した 。 あまりに も 強く 引いた ので 、車体 の 底 で 妙な 音 が 立つ 。 男 の 車 が 先 の カーブ を 曲がって しまう と 、辺り から すべて の 色 が 消えた 。 赤く 染まっていた 佳乃 の 姿 は 、今や 峠 の 暗闇 に 呑み込まれていた 。 男 の 車 が 去って 、どれ くらい 経った の か 、祐一 は 恐る恐る 車 の ライト を つけた 。 光 は 佳乃 が 鱒った 場所 まで 届か なかった が 、それ でも 冬 の 月光 より も 役 に は 立った 。 サイド ブレーキ を 下ろし 、かすかに 足 を アクセル に 乗せた 。 峠 の 道 を 照らす 青い ライト が 、水 が 染みる ような 速度 で 、佳乃 の 元 へ 近づいて いく 。 ライト が はっきり と 佳乃 の 姿 を 捕らえた とき 、青白い 光 の 中 で 佳乃 は 怯え 、光 の 中 を 見よう と 、必死に 目 を 細めて いた 。 再び サイド ブレーキ を 引いて 、祐一 は 運転 席 の ドア を 開けた 。 佳乃 が 身構える ように 、バッグ を 抱きかかえる 。 「 大丈夫 ？ 」祐一 は 声 を かけた 。 が 、真っ暗な 峠 に 声 は すぐに 呑み込まれる 。 遠い 地鳴り の ように 、車 の エンジン 音 だけ が する 。 祐一 が 光 の 中 に 踏み込む と 、佳乃 の 表情 に 変化 が あった 。 「なんで 、ここ に おる と ？ も しか して つけて 来た わけ ？ もう 、やめて よ ！ 」ほ バッグ を 抱えて 、路肩 に 樽って いる 女 が そう 吠えた 。 男 に 蹴り 降ろさ れ 、 暗い 峠 に 置 き 去り に された 女 だった 。 「だ 、大丈夫 ？ 」祐一 は それ でも 佳乃 へ 近づいて 、立ち上がらせよう と 手 を 差し伸べた 。 しかし 佳乃 は その 手 を 払い 、「見とった わけ ？ もう 信じられ ん ！ 」と 悪態 を つき ながら 自分 で 立ち 上がろう と する 。 「ど 、どうした と ね ？ 」と 祐一 は 訊いた 。 ヒール の 高い ブーツ で よろける 佳乃 の 手 を 取る と 、手のひら に 小石 が 埋まっている 感触 が した 。 「どうも こう も ない ！ あんた に 教える 義務 なか やん ！ 」祐一 の 手 を 払って 、佳乃 は 歩き 出そう と した 。 祐一 は その 腕 を また 取った 。 「車 に 乗らん ね 。 送って やる けん 」祐一 の 言葉 に 、佳乃 が ちらっと 車 の ほう へ 目 を 向ける 。 二 人 とも ライト の 中 に 立って いた 。 そこ に だけ 世界 が ある ようだった 。 祐一 が 腕 を 引く と 、「もう 、よかって ！ 放つ と いて よ ！ 」と 、また 佳乃 が 振り払う 。 「ここ から 歩いて 帰られん やろ ！ 」売り言葉 に 買い 言葉 で 、祐一 は 強く 佳乃 の 腕 を 引いた 。 タイミング が 悪く 、その 反動 で 歩き 出そう と していた 佳乃 の 足 が 宙 を 滑る 。 バランス を 崩して 倒れ込んだ ところ が 、ちょうど 車 の 真っ正面 だった 。 慌てて 支えよう と した 祐一 の 肘 が 、運 悪く 佳乃 の 背 を 押した 。 佳乃 は 奇妙な 格好 で から だ を くねらせて 、そのまま 車体 の フロント に ぶつかった 。 思わず 手 を ついた 場所 に 、佳乃 の 小指 が 差し込まれる 。 「 痛 ッ ！ 」叫び声 が こだま した 。 暗い 森 で 眠って いた 烏 たち が 一斉に 飛び立つ ほど だった 。 「だ 、大丈夫 ？ 」祐一 は 慌てて 抱き 起こそう と した 。 バンパー と 車体 の 間 に 入り込んで しまった 指 が その まま だった 。 起こそう と 佳乃 の 腋 の 下 を 持ち上げた とたん 、悲鳴 と 共に 、小指 が 奇妙 な 形 で 曲がった 。 何もかも が 一瞬 の 出来事 だった 。 血の気 が 引いた 。 ライト の 前 に しゃがみ込んで しまった 佳乃 の 顔 を 、強い ライト が 照らし 、髪 の 毛 一本 一本 が 逆立って いた 。 「ご 、ごめん 。 ……ごめん 」痛み に 顔 を 歪めた 佳乃 が 、やっと 抜けた 指 を 握り 、奥歯 を 噛み締めている 。 「 人殺し ！ 」祐一 が 肩 に 手 を 置いた 途端 、佳乃 が そう 叫んだ 。 祐一 は 思わず 手 を 引いた 。 らち 「人殺し ！ 警察 に 言って やる けん ね ！ 襲わ れた って 言って やる ！ ここ まで 拉致 られた って ！ 拉致られて 、レイプ さ れ そうに なったって ！ 私 の 親戚 に 弁護士 おる つち やけん 。 馬鹿 に せんで よ ！ 私 、あんた みたいな 男 と 付き合う ような 女 じゃ ない つち や けん ！ 人殺し ！ 」佳乃 が 叫ぶ 。 まったく の 嘘 な のに 、祐一 は なぜ か 膝 が 震えて 止まらなかった 。 佳乃 は それ だけ 言い放つ と 、痛む 指 を 握って 歩き出した 。 車 の 周囲 を 離れれば 、街灯 も ない 峠道 で 、すぐに 佳乃 の 姿 は 闇 に 呑まれる 。 「ちよ 、ちょっと 、待てって 」と 祐一 は 声 を かけた が 、それでも 佳乃 は 歩いて いく 。 佳乃 の 足音 が 遠ざかる 闇 の 中 へ 、祐一 は たまらず に 駆け込んだ 。 「嘘 つく な ！ 俺 は 何も し とら ん ぞ ！ 」叫び ながら 駆け込む と 、立ち止まった 佳乃 が 振り返り 、「絶対 に 言う て やる ！ 拉致られた って 、レイプ さ れたって 言う て やる ！ 」と 叫び 返して くる 。 真冬 の 峠 の 中 な のに 、せみ 山 全体 から 蝉 の 声 が 聞こえた 。 耳 を 塞ぎ たく なる ほど の 鳴き声 だった 。 自分 でも 何 に 怯えて いる の か 分から なかった 。 ここ まで 拉致 さ れた 。 レイプ さ れた 。 佳乃 の 言葉 は まったく の 嘘 な のに 、まるで 自分 が それ を 犯して しまった ようで 、血の気 ぬぎ ぬが 引いた 。 必死に 、「嘘 だ ！ 濡れ衣 だ ！ 」と 、心 の 中 で 叫ぶ のだが 、「誰 が 信じて くれ る ？ 誰 が お前 の こと なんか 信じて くれる ？ 」 と 真っ暗な 峠 が 畷 き かけて くる 。 そこ に は 暗い 峠 道 しか なかった 。 証人 が い なかった 。 俺 が ここ で 何も して いない と いう こと を 証明 してくれる 者 が いなかった 。 婆さん に 、「俺 は 何も やつ とらん ！ 」と 弁解 する 自分 の 姿 が 見えた 。 「俺 は 何も やつ とらん ！ 」と 、自分 を 取り囲む 人々 に 叫び 続ける 自分 の 姿 が 見えた 。 その とき ふいに 「母ちゃん は ここ に 戻って くる ！ 」と フェリー 乗り場 で 叫んだ 、幼い 自分 の 声 が 蘇った 。 誰 も 信じて くれ なかった あの とき の 声 が 。 祐一 は 佳乃 の 肩 を 掴んだ 。 「触ら んで ！ 」振り払おう と した 佳乃 の 腕 が 、祐一 の 耳 に 当たった 。 まるで 金 棒 を 差し込まれた ような 痛み が 走る 。 祐一 は 思わず 佳乃 の 腕 を 取った 。 逃げよう と する 佳乃 を 押さえ 込もう と している うちに 、冷たい 路面 で 馬乗り に なっていた 。 月 明かり に 照らされた 佳乃 の 顔 が 怒り に 歪んで いた 。 「：：：俺 は 何も し とら ん 」佳乃 の 両肩 を 強く 押さえた 。 痛み に 声 を 漏らす 佳乃 が 、それでも 噛みつく ように 、「誰 が あんた の こと なんか 信じる と よ ！ 」と 叫ぶ 。 「 人殺し ！ 助けて ！ 人殺し ！ 」佳乃 の 悲鳴 が 峠 の 樹々 を 揺らす 。 佳乃 が 声 を 上げる たび 、祐一 は 恐ろしさ に 身 が 震えた 。 こんな 嘘 を 誰 か に 聞かれたら …… 。 「……俺 は 何も し とら ん 。 俺 は 何も し とら ん 」祐一 は 目 を 閉じて いた 。 佳乃 の 喉 を 必死に 押さえつけて いた 。 恐ろしくて 仕方 なかった 。 佳乃 の 嘘 を 誰 に も 聞かせる わけに は いか なかった 。 早く 嘘 を 殺さ ない と 、真実の ほうが 殺さ れ そうで 怖かった 。 ◇岸壁 に いろんな ゴミ が 打ち寄せて いる 。 洗剤 の ペットボトル 。 汚れた 発泡 スチロール 347 第 四 章 彼 は 誰 に 出会った か ？ の 箱 。 片方 だけ の ビーチ サンダル 。 それぞれ に 藻 や ビニール 袋 が 絡まって 、いくら 波 に 乗って 、岸壁 に 立つ 光代 と 祐一 の 元 へ 来て は 、また 露店 に 立つ 母親 の 元 へ 戻って いく 。 結局 、料理 の 途中 で 光代 と 祐一 は 店 を 出て きた 。 運ばれた とき 、皿 の 上 で 生々しく 動いていた イカ の 脚 も 、祐一 の 話 が 終わる ころ に なる と 、ぐったり と 動かなくなっていた 。 幸い 、他の 客 が 広間 に 入って くる こと は なかった 。 代わり に 給仕 の おばさん が 何度 も 様子 を 見 に きた 。 話 が 終わる と 、祐一 は 、「ごめん 」と 小声 で 眩いた 。 そして 黙り 込んだ まま の 光代 に 、「これ から 、警察 に 行く けん 」と 言った 。 光代 は ほとんど 何も 考え ず に 頷いた 。 ちょうど 給仕 の おばさん が 現れて 、「刺身 は 苦手 です か ？ 」 と 訊 く ので 、「…… すいません 、 ちょっと 気分 が 悪くて 」 と 光代 は 嘘 を つ いた 。 立ち上がる 光代 を 、祐一 が 諦めた ように 見上げて いた 。 光代 は 、「ねえ 、出よ う 」と 声 を かけた 。 自分 は 置いて いかれる と 思って いた のだろう 、祐一 は ひどく 驚いて いた 。 おばさん に 詫びる と 、「お 金 は いらん けん ね 」と 言って くれた 。 店 を 出て 、漁船 の 停泊 する 岸壁 を 歩いた 。 足 が 自然 と 駐車場 に 向いて いた 。 人 を 殺し た 男 の 車 に また 乗り込もう と して いる 。 頭 で は 分かって いる のだ が 、冷たい 潮風 の 吹き抜ける 岸壁 で 、他 に 向かう 場所 も なかった 。 祐一 の 話 を 最後 まで 悲鳴 も 上げ ず 、逃げ出し も せず 、聞き終えた 自分 が 不思議だった 。 あまりに も 話 の 内容 が 大き すぎた 。 あまり に も 大き すぎて 、何も 考えられ なかった 。 岸壁 の 端 まで 来る と 、光代 は 立ち止まった 。 足元 の 岸壁 に 、いろんな ゴミ が 集まって 、静かに 波 に 揺られて いた 。 「今 から 、警察 に 行く けん 」祐一 の 声 に 、光代 は ゴミ を 見つめた まま 頷いた 。 「 ごめん 。 光代 に 迷惑 かける 気 は …。 ：」言葉 の 途中 で 、光代 は また 頷いた 。 三輪車 に 乗った 女の子 が 、再び こちら に 近寄って くる 。 ハンドル に ついた ピンク 色 の リボン が 、冷たい 潮風 に 千切れ そうに 扉 いて いる 。 近寄って きた 三輪車 は 、光代 と 祐一 の 間 を 抜けて 、また 露店 の 母親 の 元 へ 戻った 。 光 代 は 必死に ペダル を 漕ぐ 女の子 の 小さな 背中 を 見送った 。 その とき 、「本当に 、ごめん 」と 頭 を 下げた 祐一 が 、一人 で 駐車場 の ほう へ 歩き出す 。 一回り 背中 が 縮んだ ように 見えた 。 少し でも 触れる と 、泣き出し そうな 背中 だった 。 「警察 って 、どこ の ？ 」と 光代 は 声 を かけた 。 振り向いた 祐一 が 、「 分から ん 、 この 辺 なら 唐津 まで 出れば ある やろ 」 と 答える 。 祐一 の 答え を 訊き ながら 、そんな こと もう どうでも いい じゃないか と 光代 は 思った 。 早く 逃げ出せ と いう 声 も 聞こえた 。 それ なのに 、なぜ か 悔しくて 仕方なかった 。 何 か 言って やり たくて 仕方なかった 。 「私 だけ 、こげん 所 に 置いて いかんで よ 」と 光代 は 言った 。 「……こげん 所 に 、一人 で 置いてかれて も 困る たい 。 …：私 も 一緒に 行く 。 警察 まで 、一緒に 行く 」と 。 海 から の 突風 が 、光代 の 言葉 を 千切り 取る 。 祐一 は じっと 光代 を 見つめて いた 。 そし て 何も 言わ ず に 、また 一人 で 歩き 出した 。 「待って よ ！ 」光代 が 叫ぶ と 、足 を 止めた 祐一 が 、「ごめん 。 そげ ん こと したら 、光代 に 迷惑 かかる 」と 振り返らず に 言う 。 「もう 迷惑 か かつ とる ！ 」光代 は その 背中 に 怒鳴った 。 道 の 向こう で イカ を 割いて いた おばさん が 、 ちらっと こ ちら に 目 を 向ける 。 返事 も せ ず に 歩き出した 祐一 を 、光代 は 追いかけた 。 何 か 言って やり たかった 。 でも 、こんな こと を 言って やりたい わけじゃ なかった 。 駐車場 へ 入る と 、祐一 は また 足 を 止めた 。 両手 を 握りしめ 、肩 を 震わせて いた 。 ◇雲行き が 怪しく なった の は 、午後 二時 を 過ぎた ころ だった 。 警察 から の 説明 を 受けて 、思わず 店 を 飛び出した 石橋 佳男 は 、自宅 から 歩いて 三 分 ほど の 所 に 借りている 駐車場 へ 向かい 、行く 当て も なく 車 に 乗り込んだ 。 福岡 の 大学生 が 犯人 で は なく 、出会い系 サイト で 知り合った 男 が 犯人 の ようだ 、と いう 警察 の 説明 が 、いくら 納得 しよう と しても できなかった 。 いや 、もっと 言えば 、この 事件 に 娘 の 佳乃 が 関わって いる と いう こと さえ 、何かの 間違い の ような 気 が して 、誰か が 何かの 目的 の ため 、よってたかって 自分 や 妻 を 鯛 して いる ような 気 さえ した 。 佳乃 は まだ どこ か で 生きて いる んじゃ ない か 。 どこ か で 自分 が 助け に 来る の を 待って 「……なんで 、こげん こと に なって しも うた と やる 」洩 を 畷る 祐一 の 声 が 、遠い 波 止め に ぶつかる 波 の 音 に 重なる 。 光代 は 祐一 の 前 へ 回り 込む と 、硬く 握ら れた その 拳 を 手 に とった 。 「行こう 、警察 に 。 一緒に 行こう よ 。 …：怖かった と やる ？ 一 人 で 行く の 、怖かった と やる ？ 私 が 一緒に 行って やる けん 。 一緒 なら ：．…、 一緒 なら 行ける やろ ？ 」光代 の 両手 の 中 で 、祐一 の 拳 が 震えて いた 。 その 震え が 伝わる ように 、祐一 が 何度 も 「……うん 、うん 」と 頷く 。 いる ので は ない か ……。 でも どこ に 佳乃 が いる の か 分から ない 。 誰 に 訊いて も 、佳乃 は もう 死んだ のだ と 言う 。 行く 当て も なく 久留米 市街 を 車 で 走った 。 見慣れた 景色 な のに 、涙 に くもる 目 で 見知らぬ 街 の ようだった 。 佳男 が 運転 する 車 は 、まだ 高校 に 入った ばかりの 佳乃 が 選んだ もの だった 。 派手な 車 は 嫌だ と 言った のに 、「絶対 、赤い ほうが 可愛か よ ！ 」と 佳乃 は 譲ら ず 、結局 、折衷案 で 決まった 薄い グリーン の 軽自動車 だった 。 納車 の 日 、家族 三人 で 写真 を 撮った 。 佳乃 は 新しい 車 を 喜び 、佳男 が いくら 説得 してはも 、シート の ビニール を 剥がす こと を 許さなかった 。 もう 何 時間 も 久留米 市内 を 走り回って いた 。 ただ 佳乃 に 会い たかった 。 佳乃 が どこ に いる の か 知り たかった 。 助け を 求める 声 は 聞こえる のに 、娘 が どこ に いる の か 分から なかった 。 気 が つく と 、佳男 は ハンドル を 三瀬 峠 へ 向けて いた 。 久留米 市街 を 出た 車 は 国道 に 乗り 、川 を 渡り 、気 が つけば 、佐賀 平野 に 伸びる 田園 の 一本道 を 走っていた 。 道 の 先 に は 、三瀬 峠 を 含む 脊振 山地 の 山々 が あった 。 とつぜん 雲行き が 怪しく なって きた の は 、ガソリン スタンド に 寄った ころ だった 。 給油 を 待つ 間 に 便所 へ 行く と 、便所 の 小窓 から 見えた 脊振 山地 の 上空 に 黒い 雨雲 が 迫って 見えた 。 雨雲 は 峠 の 頂上 を 隠す ように 広がって 、佳男 が いる 平野部 の ほう へ も 迫って く ワー 便所 を 出る と 、雨 が ぱらぱら と 降り出した 。 佳男 は 屋外 に あった 洗面所 で 手 も 洗わず に 、給油 の 終わった 自分 の 車 に 駆け込んだ 。 佳乃 と 同じ 年 くらい の 女の子 が 、領収書 を 持って 駆けて くる 。 渡さ れた 領収 書 が 雨 に 濡れて いた 。 佳男 は 代金 を 払って アクセル を 踏んだ 。 雨 の 中 、女の子 が いつまでも 見送る 姿 が 、ルームミラー に 映って いた 。 車 が 峠 道 に 入る ころ に は どしゃぶり だった 。 まだ 午後 の 三 時 前 だ と 言う のに 、低い 空 に 広がった 雨雲 が 、峠道 を 暗く していた 。 佳男 は ライト を つけた 。 激しく 動く ワイパー の 先 に 、青白く アスファルト 道路 が 浮か び 上がる 。 フロント ガラス を 滝 の ように 雨 が 流れ 、まるで 千切れ そうに ワイパー が 動き 続ける 。 峠 を 下りて くる 対向 車 の ライト で 、フロント ガラス の 雨 粒 が 光る 。 エンジン 音 は 聞こえず 、辺り の 樹々 を 叩く 雨音 が 、閉め切った 車内 に も 響いて くる 。 い 、とこ 葬儀 の 日 、久留米 の 工場 で 働く 従兄 に 、「佳乃 ちゃん の 亡くなった 場所 に 、一緒に 線香 あげて やらん や 」と 言わ れた 。 あまりに も いろんな こと が 立て続け に 起こり 、佳男 が 返事 も でき ず に いる と 、そば に いた 親戚 の 女 たち が 、「行くん なら 、私たち も 行くたい 。 お 花 も 供えて 、 佳乃 ちゃん の 好き やった お 菓子 と か ・・・…」 と ざ わ ついた 。 みんな が 親切 で 言って くれて いる の は 分かって いた が 、その 親切 を 受けた 途端 に 、二 度 と 佳乃 に 会え ない ような 気 が して 仕方なかった 。 佳男 は 、「俺 は 、行かん 」と だけ 言った 。 ざ わ ついて いた 親戚 たち が その 一言 で 黙り 込んだ 。 あれ は いつごろ だった か 、テレビ 中継 されていた 峠 の 現場 に 、花 や ジュース が 並べられている 映像 を 見た 。 親戚 たち が こっそり 行って くれた の か 、 それとも 見ず知らず の 誰 か が 、 佳乃 に 、 テレビ や 雑誌 であれ だけ 非難 された 佳乃 に 、 花 を 手 向けて くれた の か 。 佳男 は その 映像 を 見て 、声 を 上げて 泣いた 。 テレビ や 雑誌 で は 遠回しに 表現 されて いても 、手元 に 届く 嫌がらせ の ファックス や 手紙 は 、やはり 露骨 だった 。 ぱい た 「売女 の 娘 が 殺されて 悲しい か ？ 自業自得 」「俺 も お前 の 娘 買いました 。 一晩 五百 円 」「あんな 女 、殺されて 当然 。 売春 は 違法 です 」 「 仕送り して やれよ －」 直筆 の もの も あれば 、 パソコン から プリント アウト された もの も あった 。 毎朝 、郵便 配達員 が 来る の が 恐ろしかった 。 電話 線 を 抜いて も 、夢 の 中 で 電話 が 鳴った 。 娘 が 日本 中 から 嫌われて いる ようだった .
