Matt. 23
Mat. 23
||||||||||||the chair||sat|||
|||||keep|||||||||||||
3 Therefore observe and do all that they have told you: but do not do according to their works: for they say, and do not do.
|||||unbearable||they impose||shoulders|||||they are unwilling||to move
4 For they bind heavy and unbearable burdens and lay them on the shoulders of men: but they will not move them with their finger.
||||||they may be seen|||they widen||phylacteries|||they magnify|fringes
5 But all their works they do to be seen by men: for they make their phylacteries broad, and enlarge the borders of their garments.
|||||dinners||first|||||greetings||||to be called|||Rabbi
6 They love the best places at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 and greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, Rabbi.
||||Rabbi||||||||||
8 But you shall not be called Rabbi: for your teacher is one, but you are all brothers.
|be called|||||||
11 Qui major est vestrum, erit minister vester.
11 He that is greater among you shall be your servant.
|||exalts||||||will be exalted
||||||||shut up||||
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you close the kingdom of heaven to men!"
|||||entering|you allow|
for you do not enter, nor do you allow those who are entering to enter.
14 Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ, quia comeditis domos viduarum, orationes longas orantes !
|||||||you consume|the houses|of widows|prayers|long|
14 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour the houses of widows, while pretending to pray for long!
propter hoc amplius accipietis judicium.
For this reason, you will receive the greater judgment.
|||||||you go around|||||||proselyte||||||||of hell|twice||
15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.
|||||||has sworn|||||||||gold||owes
16 Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.'
17 Stulti et cæci : quid enim majus est ?
fools||||||
17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred?
aurum, an templum, quod sanctificat aurum ?
||||sanctifies|
gold, or the temple that sanctifies gold?
||||the altar|||||||gift|||||
18 And whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing: but whoever swears by the gift that is upon it, is obligated.
|||||gift|or||||
19 Blind ones: for what is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?
||swears||||||||||||
20 Therefore, whoever swears by the altar, swears by it and by all that is upon it.
21 Et quicumque juraverit in templo, jurat in illo, et in eo qui habitat in ipso : 22 et qui jurat in cælo, jurat in throno Dei, et in eo qui sedet super eum.
|||||swears|||||||dwells||it||||||||the throne||||||sits||
21 And whoever swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who dwells in it: 22 and he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.
|||||||tithe|mint||dill||cumin||you have left behind||are heavier||of the law|||||
23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy, and faith!
hæc oportuit facere, et illa non omittere.
||||||omit
It was necessary to do these things, and not to omit them.
24 Duces cæci, excolantes culicem, camelum autem glutientes.
||squeezing||||gluttons
24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel.
|||||||you cleanse||outside||of the cup||of the cup and of the plate|within||full||robbery||uncleanness
25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence!
||clean||||||||||it||||
26 Woe to you, blind Pharisee! First cleanse the inside of the cup and the dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ, quia similes estis sepulchris dealbatis, quæ a foris parent hominibus speciosa, intus vero pleni sunt ossibus mortuorum, et omni spurcitia !
|||||||you are||to sepulchers|whitewashed||||appear||beautiful|||||bones||||filth
27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness!
||||||you are pleasing|||||||hypocrisy||iniquity
28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

31 Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves, that you are sons of those who killed the prophets.
32 Et vos implete mensuram patrum vestrorum.
|||measure||
32 And you, fill up the measure of your fathers.
33 Serpentes, genimina viperarum, quomodo fugietis a judicio gehennæ ?
|offspring||||||
33 Serpents, brood of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of hell?

36 Amen dico vobis, venient hæc omnia super generationem istam.
36 Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!
38 Ecce relinquetur vobis domus vestra deserta.
|||||deserted
38 Behold, your house will be left to you desolate.

39 For I say to you, you will not see me until you say: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
