2 . 3 . 我 的 語言 探索 歷程 ： 發現 亞洲 文化 （ 上 ）

在 我 開始 成為 外交 人員 的 時候 ， 並 不 知道 自己 會 因此 陷到 中國 和 日本 的 文化 裡 。

我 的 語言 探險 很快 就要 讓 我 面對 學習 語言 的 真正 挑戰 。

這 兩種 語言 對 我 來說 ， 曾經 是 那麼 陌生 與 遙遠 。

想 把 這 兩種 語言 學好 ， 必須 要 下定決心 、 下工夫 、 並且 要 有 極 好 的 學習 技巧 。

但是 ， 若 不是 對 這些 人 、 對 這些 文化 有 強烈 的 興趣 ， 也 還是 很難 把 語言 學 得 通順 。

在 一九六七 年 的 加拿大 首都 渥太華 ， 我 開始 了 有生以來 的 第一份 全職 工作 ， 職位 是 「 商務 專員 」 。

大部分 正在 受訓 的 年輕 專員 ， 都 希望 能 被 派 到 自己 感興趣 的 國家 去 服務 。

但是 ， 有 三分之一 的 相關 職位 是 在 美國 。

每個 人 都 儘量 避免 被 分派 到 克里夫蘭 或 布法羅 去 。

當 外貿局 宣佈 要 指派 一 人 前往 香港 學習 中文 ， 以 預備 日後 與 中華人民共和國 建交 ，

我 心想 ， 這是 避免 到 布法羅 的 最好 機會 了 。

於是 ， 我 開始 向 渥太華 的 一 名 中國 老先生 學習 中文 。

由於 一 星期 只 上 一 課 ， 所以 學到 的 並不 多 。

我 只是 讓 人事 主任 和 其它 資深 人士 知道 我 正在 做 些 什麼 ，

因為 就 機會 來說 ， 為什麼 他們 不 挑選 一 名 已經 致力 學習 中文 的 學生 去 呢 ?

香港 並 不是 我 就職 的 第一個 選擇 ：

我 其實 更 想 去 的 是 里約熱內盧 、 羅馬 或 馬德里 ，

不過 ， 香港 聽 起來 也 頗 具 異國 情調 。

我 很 高興 自己 終於 被 指派 到 香港 去 。

這麼 容易 地 被 選 上 ， 是 因為 我 已 下決心 去 學習 這個 語言 的 緣故 。

決心 常常 以 不同 的 方式 付 紅利 給 你 。

至於 為什麼 要 選擇 香港 ，

那 是 因為 中國 當時 正 處於 文化大革命 的 動盪 時刻 ，

而 臺灣 又 因為 政治 因素 的 考慮 ，

對 一 名 日後 即將 前往 中國 就任 的 加拿大 外交 代表 ， 顯然 並 不 適宜 。

由於 香港 有 一些 講 普通話 的 北方 移民 ， 這時 便 成 了 學習 中文 最 適宜 的 地方 了 。

記得 那時 有 位 好 朋友 問 我 是否 應該 接受 那個 職務 。

「 要是 你 學 不 會 中文 怎麼辦 ? 」 他 問 。

由於 我 已經 有 學會 法語 的 經驗 ， 想當然 中文 也 應該 學 得 會 才 是 。

語言 家 能夠 精通 數種 語言 ， 大多 是 因為 與日俱增 的 信心 。

語言 學習 已 不是 什麼 神奇 的 事 。

而且 ， 你 學習 的 語言 愈 多 ， 就 愈 能夠 培養 出 用 新 方式 去 表達 的 能力 。

這 有點 像 運動 一樣 ： 一旦 學會 了 一種 ， 就 很 容易 再 學習 另 一種 。

我 那 位 好心 的 中文 老師 在 渥太華 時 曾 警告 過 我 ：

“ 要 我 對 那些 迷人 的 香港 女孩 要 特別 小心 ！ ”

我 當時 並 沒有 留意 他 的 忠言 。

結果 ， 我 真的 在 香港 遇到 我 後來 的 妻子 卡門 。

我們 結婚 至今 已 三十多年 ， 一直 都 很 快樂 ， 而且 有 兩個 兒子 和 五個 孫子 。

不過 ， 這 在 我 當初 啟程 到 神秘 的 遠東 之 時 ， 可 一點 也 不 知道 。

=== 密集 學習 ， 香港 1968 ===

我 想象 中 的 香港 是 : 彎曲 的 中式 屋頂 ， 低垂 的 楊柳 樹 ， 是 個 具有 浪漫 色彩 的 城市 。

我 盼望 著 儘快 進入 這個 神秘 的 地方 。

那 是 一九六八年 的 六月 ， 我 年 方 二十二 歲 （ 廿二 ） ， 首度 向 亞洲 出發 。

我 趁機 一路 遊覽 ， 親臨 那些 以往 只能 在 想象 中 出現 的 世界 角落 :

在 意大利 ， 我 見到 了 宏偉 的 羅馬 和 它 毫無 秩序 的 交通 ;

在 以色列 ， 夏 夜 裡 永恆 星空 下 的 古城 耶路撒冷 ， 及其 戰爭 剛 結束 時 的 緊張 氣氛 ;

在 伊朗 ， 德黑蘭 的 傳統 市集 真是 多采多姿 ，

而 橫衝直撞 的 出租車 在 六月 天 仍 點綴 著 聖誕 彩燈 ;

在 印度 ， 泰姬瑪哈陵 的 壯麗 和 新德里 的 混亂 不安 ;

在 泰國 ， 色彩 明亮 的 曼谷 及其 優雅 的 人民 和 文化 。

我 對 這 份 新 職務 的 興奮 之 情 ， 隨著 旅程 與 日俱增 。

終於 ， 我 抵達 了 香港 ， 坐上 了 前來 迎接 的 加拿大 大使館 公務 車 。

當 我們 駛過 擁擠 的 九龍 ， 見到 許多 單調 、 灰色 的 公寓 大廈 ， 我 這 才 突然 回到 了 現實 。

香港 並 不是 什麼 世外桃源 啊 !

總之 ， 我們 的 車子 上 了 一 艘 渡輪 ， 要 從 九龍 到 香港島 去 。

我 這時 突然 發現 自己 正 面 對 一個 水 上 萬花筒 :

貨輪 、 駁船 、 軍艦 、 還有 中式 舢板 和 許多 小 遊艇 ，

遠處 則 是 許多 現代化 的 摩天大樓 和 威嚴 壯觀 的 舊 英國式 建築 ，

這 一切 ， 都 以 高聳 的 香港島 的 太平山 作為 背景 。

生活 在 皇家 香港 領地 （ 這是 當時 的 稱呼 ） ，

我 總 覺得 有 種 被 關閉 的 感覺 。

如果 要 離開 香港 ， 無論 去 哪裡 ， 都 得 搭乘 飛機 或 船 ，

當時 的 中國 也 不 太 容易 隨時 造訪 ， 生活 在 香港 ， 不免 感到 有些 鬱悶 。

但是 ， 我 有 個 最 經濟 的 方法 可以 讓 自己 高興 起來 ，

那 就 是 付 上 港幣 十 或 十五分 錢 ， 然後 登上 天星 小 輪 ， 跨海 到 另 一 岸 去 。

在 十五分鐘 的 航程 中 ， 我 可以 不厭其煩 地 仔細 觀察 那些 遠 在 天際 ， 或 近 在 水面 上 的 往來 船隻 。

我 剛 到 香港 的 最初 幾個 月 ， 是 住 在 靠近 赤柱 ( 赤 , 柱 ) 和 淺水灣 ( 淺水 , 灣 ) 一帶 的 地區 。

我 的 住所 正 面 對 一個 富有 詩意 的 小 水灣 ， 視野 極 佳 ，

可以 讓 我 盡情 地 觀察 那些 中式 小 舢舨 穿梭 在 閃爍不定 、 美麗 如 玉 的 南中國 海 面 上 。

這 也 頗 滿足 了 我 追求 異國 情調 的 熱望 。

這 一帶 ， 比起 香港 其它 地區 ， 人口 要 少 得 多 。

這裡 有 海灘 、 茂密 的 亞熱帶 植物 、 還有 不少 的 歐洲 人口 ， 像 極 了 一個 渡假 勝地 。

我 被 安排 住 在 那裡 ， 然後 像 以往 一般 前來 學習 語言 的 外交 人員 一樣 ， 到 香港大學 去 上課 。

但是 ， 幾個 月 之後 ， 我 選擇 住 到 人口 比較 密集 的 九龍 地區 ，

然後 到 香港中文大學 去 學習 中文 。

就 如同 當初 我 投入 到 法國 文化 裡 去 學習 法文 一樣 ，

我 選擇 了 同樣 的 方式 去 學習 中文 。

香港 的 主要 語言 是 廣東話 ， 因此 不能 提供 我 一個 真正 學習 普通話 的 環境 。

但 廣東話 也 是 一 種 中國 語言 ， 而且 可以 讓 我 充分 感受 到 中國 的 文化 。

我 走出 了 一向 輕鬆 寫意 的 西方 小 環境 ， 把 自己 完全 投入 到 中式 的 日常生活 裡 :

來自 熙攘 的 街道 和 市場 的 各種 聲音 和 氣味 ;

販賣 中國 藥材 和 各種 稀奇古怪 物品 的 店鋪 ;

街道 兩旁 的 小 工作坊 裡 ， 人們 喧鬧 而 精力 充沛 地 做活 ;

還有 用 竿子 挑 著 貨品 沿街 叫賣 的 小販 也 個個 活力 十足 。

在 學校 附近 ， 或是 擁擠 的 九龍 尖沙咀 ，

我 可以 和 工人 們 一同 吃 些 便宜 的 麵食 或 咖哩 飯 當 午餐 ，

也 可以 到 豪華 的 餐廳 去 享受 一 頓 昂貴 的 廣東 佳餚 。

林立 的 餐館 呈現 不同 地區 的 中國 美味 :

北京 、 山東 、 四川 、 潮州 ， 各式各樣 ， 都 擠 在 狹窄 、 熙攘 的 街道 裡 。

這 就 是 我 每天 學習 中文 的 環境 。

也 可以 說 ， 我 是 間接 地 、 不知不覺 地 被迫 接受 這個 語言 了 。

我 還 記得 在 午餐 時 與 老師 們 一面 吃 著 回鍋 肉 、 啃 著 饅頭 、 喝 著 鰻魚 湯 ，

一面 用 普通話 交談 的 情形 。

這種 非正式 的 聚會 ， 可 說 是 我 最 輕鬆 愉快 的 學習 經驗 了 。

老師 們 會 談 些 他們 在 中國 時 的 童年 往事 ， 或 其它 一些 有趣 的 話題 。

吃 中國 菜 的 時候 ， 每個 人 都 各自 用 筷子 在 公共 的 菜 盤 裡 挾 菜 。

由於 我 一向 胃口 很 好 ， 又 是 桌 旁 唯一 的 加拿大人 ，

因此 很快 便 得 了 個 「 挾 拿 大 」 的 暱稱 ( 重音 要 放 在 後面 兩個 字 ) 。

我 選擇 到 「 香港中文大學 」 是 個 正確 的 決定 。

這 所 中文 學校 是 由 劉明 先生 所 主導 的 ， 他 是 我 遇 過 的 最 有 效率 的 語言 教師 之一 。

他 歡迎 大家 前去 學習 中文 ， 並且 讓 外國人 覺得 自己 能夠 學會 這個 語言 。

他 堅持 學生 必須 認真 學習 ， 因為 他 自己 本身 就 是 個 精力 充沛 、 做事 認真 的 人 。

他 鼓勵 我 全心全力 接受 新 語言 的 挑戰 ， 也 儘量 配合 我 的 種種 需求 。

學校 裡 的 其它 職員 ， 也 都 十分 和氣 、 能夠 鼓勵 人 學習 。

一 開始 的 時候 ， 我 是 靠 著 與 老師 一對一 的 方式 學習 。

但 很快 的 ， 我 就 發現 這樣 的 上課 方式 十分 緊張 。

我 每天 早晨 要 上 三個 鐘頭 的 課 ， 有時 會 覺得 疲累 而 不能 集中 精神 。

老師 們 的 教學 效果 也 因人而異 ，

有些 老師 只 想 用 英語 向 我 說明 中文 的 用法 ， 那種 方式 實在 令人 討厭 。

當時 流行 的 教法 是 強調 反覆 練習 ， 但 往往 也 讓 人 又 煩 又 累 。

而 最 有 效果 的 上課 時間 ， 就 是 老師 只 談 些 引 人 興趣 的 話題 。

我 大部分 的 學習 成就 ， 是 那些 在 課堂 上 不拘 形式 的 對 談 ， 還有 我 自己 在 家裡 的 密集 學習 。

就是 劉明 先生 這種 不 停 懈 的 督導 和 挑戰 ， 激勵 我 不斷 認真 努力 地 學習 。

我們 採用 的 教材 ， 是 由 「 耶魯 在 中國 」 的 教學 計劃 所 提供 。

教材 的 第一冊 是 「 漢語 會話 」 ， 背景 是 設 在 解放前 的 中國 ，

會話 內容 則 是 描述 一 位 史密斯 先生 如何 從 上海 到 南京 ，

然後 再 到 北平 ( 那 是 國民黨 時期 的 稱呼 ) 。

生活 、 工作 、 並且 在 中國 境內 四處 旅行 的 經過 。

這 本 教材 的 內容 和 一九六零 年代 後期 的 中國 實際 狀況 ， 差距 很 大 。

那時 的 中國 正 陷於 文化大革命 的 風暴 裡 ， 並 不 像 書 中 所 描繪 的 那樣 。

我 已 不 太 記得 書 中 的 內容 ，

但 我 瞭解 像 這 一類 並 不 真實 的 教科書 ， 也許 對 語言 的 初學者 仍 有 必要 。

=== 閱讀 和 詞彙 的 增長 ===

我們 的 第二 冊 教材 ， 內容 就 有趣 得 多 了 ， 我 仍然 覺得 它 值得 推薦 。

它 的 書名 是 「 中國 文化 廿 （二十 ） 講 」 ，

是 於 一九六三 年 由 耶魯大學 編纂 的 初學 讀本 ，

內容 涵蓋 中國 的 歷史 文化 ， 並 使用 淺顯 易懂 的 語言 表達 。

我 至今 仍 偶爾 拿 出來 閱讀 ， 以 重新 喚起 我 對 中文 的 記憶 。

雖然 這 本 書 使用 的 文字 非常 淺顯 ， 談到 的 主題 卻 非常 真實 ， 都 是 有關 中國 的 歷史 和 文化 。

對 初學者 來說 ， 把 閱讀 材料 分 等級 是 不可 避免 的 ，

因為 閱讀 淺顯 的 東西 能夠 幫助 建立 信心 ，

然後 才 逐漸 加強 流利 的 程度 。

雖然 如此 ， 這些 讀本 應該 針對 大家 感興趣 的 題材 ， 而 不要 只是 模仿 兒童 故事 。

理想 上 ， 應該 有 許多 題材 供 學習者 選擇 ， 但 也 應該 儘快 進入 真實 的 內容 。

大概 有 四個 月 的 時間 ， 我 都 只 閱讀 中文 的 規範 讀物 。

這些 讀物 ， 大多 列 有 特別 預備 的 字 詞 表 ， 而 題材 也 相當 廣泛 ， 從 歷史 、 政治 到 文學 都 有 。

突然 間 ， 一個 奇妙 的 世界 以 它 原本 的 語言 在 我 眼前 展開 :

先是 從 書本 ， 然後 ， 隨著 我 程度 的 進展 ， 也 開始 透過 實際 接觸 的 人物 向 我 展現 。

我 全心全力 學習 中文 。

在 我 學習 法文 的 時候 ， 我 其實 已 有 十年 的 學校 訓練 ， 但 學習 中文 時 就 沒有 這個 好處 。

儘管如此 ， 我 還是 決定 儘可能 在 短期 內 就要 學出 成績 來 。

我 開始 主導 自己 的 學習 。

每天 一 醒 過來 ， 我 就 打開 錄音機 ， 無論 是 作為 背景 或 特別 訓練 ， 我 都 注意 收聽 發音 。

我 認真 學習 中國 字 ， 每天 都 練習 書寫 並 複習 。

我 不斷 閱讀 ， 對 那些 定義 不是 很 清楚 的 字詞 ， 就 特別 去 研究 它 的 上下文 。

往往 ， 我 以為 自己 好象 永遠 也 記 不 得 那些 生字 ， 但 最後 總能 牢記 下來 。

香港 並 不是 個 講 普通話 的 城市 ， 所以 我 學 中文 的 時候 總 覺得 相當 孤立 。

我 不 太 可能 一 走出 門 就 可以 找 個 店主 或 其它 人 講 普通話 。

雖然 電臺 和 電視機 。。。 雖然 電臺 和 電視臺 有 普通話 的 節目 ，

但 我 只能 模糊 聽懂 一 小部份 ， 其餘 很快 就 消失 了 。

從 另一方面 來說 ， 我 發現 使用 錄音機 ，

可以 讓 我 一再 反覆 收聽 那些 我 業已 瞭解 的 內容 ， 這 對 我 幫助 極大 。

問題 是 ， 要 找到 在 我 理解 程度 之內 的 有趣 錄音帶 ， 也 是 有些 困難 。

當 我 住 在 香港 的 時候 ， 錄音機 還 不能 隨身 攜帶 ，

是 那種 龐大 、 笨重 、 而且 難看 的 轉盤式 錄音機 ，

我 必須 在 家裡 坐 著 收聽 。

如今 ， 現代 科技 不但 可以 讓 你 很 容易 就 找到 有趣 的 材料 ，

而且 可以 下載 或 錄下 音 來 ， 然後 隨時隨地 收聽 。

由於 中文 實際上 並 不是 以 語音 為主 的 字母 所 構成 ，

我 必須 學習 三 到 四 千 個 字 ， 每個 字 都 須要 多達 十五 個 筆劃 ， 或者 更 多 。

至於 對 字詞 的 吸收 或 理解 ， 不用說 是 比 英文 難 多 了 。

我 一向 認為 字典 是 學習 語言 的 最後 領域 。

從 一 本 傳統 的 字典 中 找出 需要 的 字詞 ， 不但 沒有 效率 ， 而且 浪費 時間 。

往往 一旦 合 上 了 字典 （ 合 上 ， 合 上 書 ） ， 你 也 忘 了 那個 字 的 意思 。

使用 中文 字典 更 是 比 使用 那些 用 字母 排列 的 字典 要 困難 得 多 。

學習 語言 最 讓 人 感到 挫折 的 ， 就 是 很 容易 忘記 剛 學 過 的 新 字 ，

好象 你 總是 要 一 學 再 學 。

這 情形 在 學習 中文 的 時候 更 嚴重 ， 因為 漢字 本身 就 比較 困難 ，

所以 我 一定 要 找出 一個 方法 來 增快 我 學習 漢字 的 速度 。

我 逐漸 發展 出 一套 學習 生字 的 方法 ， 好 加快 學習 速度 ， 並且 能 把 學 過 的 字 記 下來 。

有 個 系統 是 根據 一般 中國 小孩 學習 漢字 的 方法 。

我 買 了 些 劃 有 格子 的 練習簿 ， 先 在 第一 行 把 第一個 字 寫 個 六 、七 遍 ，

然後 在 第三 行 寫 上 發音 或 英文 說明 ，

接著 再 用 同樣 的 方法 練習 第二個 字 。

很快 的 ， 我 就 會 碰到 剛 學 過 的 第一 個 字 ， 我 就 再 重寫 一遍 。

也就是說 ， 在 我 忘掉 一個 字 之前 ， 我 通常 有 重新 複習 的 機會 。

剛 開始 的 時候 ， 我 一天 只能 學 十個 生字 ，

沒 多久 ， 就 進步 到 每天 能 達到 三十個 字 ， 而且 能 記下 大約 50% 的 程度 。

假如 練習 的 生字 與 我 正在 閱讀 或 聆聽 的 課文 有關 ， 記住 的 比率 就 更 高 。

這種 有 系統 的 、 一再 反覆 學習 直到 記牢 為止 的 方法 ，

從此 就 成 了 我 以後 學習 語言 的 基本 法則 。

雖然 我 的 書法 還 不是 很 好 ， 中文 寫作 卻 對 我 很 重要 。

寫作 的 時候 ， 我 比較 有 時間 去 造句 ， 並且 小心 選擇 要 用 的 字 。

寫作 不但 幫助 我 加強 對 詞彙 的 理解 ， 也 可以 讓 我 有 機會 練習 句子 的 構造 。

現代 的 中文 ， 書面 語言 與 一般 的 口語 已 十分 相似 ， 我 的 寫作 風格 也 是 如此 。

中文 的 古典 作品 ， 則 是 使用 另 一種 文雅 的 、 更 精簡 的 表達 方式 ， 十分 不同 於 一般 的 口語 。

現代 的 中文 作家 ， 通常 喜歡 在 自己 的 文章 內 加入 這樣 的 一些 精緻 語言 。

我 則 不 去 麻煩 自己 。

我 的 文章 簡單 、 直接 ， 跟 口語 差不多 。

這種 寫法 對 翻譯 新聞 評論 或 完成 學校 佈置 的 作業 ， 已 綽綽有餘 了 。

我 把 寫 文章 當做 是 講話 的 延伸 ， 可以 幫助 我 增進 用 中文 表達 的 能力 。

學習 語言 的 人 應該 常常 寫 文章 ， 而且 也 應該 儘量 縮小 書面 語言 與 口語 之間 的 差距 。

我 對 學習 生字 另 一個 堅持 的 原則 ， 是 上下文 的 重要性 。

要 想 記住 中文 的 意義 ， 詞組 或 組合詞 比 獨自 出現 的 單字 容易 記得 多 。

我 至今 仍然 無法 辨認 某些 單獨 出現 的 字 ，

而 對 詞組 或 複合詞 就 比較 容易 認出 它們 的 意思 。

這個 「 由 詞組 、 或 更 長 的 字句 前後 關係 來 學習 單詞 」 的 原則 ，

對 學習 任何 語言 都 很 有 用處 ，

也 是 我們 開發 出來 的 語言 學習 系統 的 一個 主要 特點 。

這 兩種 語言 對 我 來說 ， 曾經 是 那麼 陌生 與 遙遠 。 These two languages were once so unfamiliar and distant to me.

想 把 這 兩種 語言 學好 ， 必須 要 下定決心 、 下工夫 、 並且 要 有 極 好 的 學習 技巧 。 To master these two languages, one must be determined, put in the effort, and have excellent learning skills.

但是 ， 若 不是 對 這些 人 、 對 這些 文化 有 強烈 的 興趣 ， 也 還是 很難 把 語言 學 得 通順 。 However, without a strong interest in these people and these cultures, it is still very difficult to learn the language fluently.

在 一九六七 年 的 加拿大 首都 渥太華 ， 我 開始 了 有生以來 的 第一份 全職 工作 ， 職位 是 「 商務 專員 」 。 In 1967, in the Canadian capital of Ottawa, I started my first full-time job in my life, with the position of "Business Officer."

大部分 正在 受訓 的 年輕 專員 ， 都 希望 能 被 派 到 自己 感興趣 的 國家 去 服務 。 Most of the young officers in training hoped to be assigned to countries they were interested in.

但是 ， 有 三分之一 的 相關 職位 是 在 美國 。 However, one-third of the relevant positions were in the United States.
