Leí en el Calgary Herald, que es el principal periódico de aquí, en estos momentos somos un millón… casi un millón cien mil de habitantes.

Sí, hay un… hay… hay… bueno, hace diez ó veinte años era mucho, mucho menos. Había una… crecimiento de… de la economía, de la población. Y la gente viene de… de… de todo el mundo ¿no?

De todo el mundo, inclusive mucha gente aquí… el señor que estaba hablando eso en el … ? ?... yo creo que tenía algo que ver con los municipios, con … ? … del municipio de… ? ?... que la municipalidad estaba un poquito preocupada, por que la… la ciudad estaba creciendo a un ritmo mayor de lo que ellos… de lo que estaban preparados, de los planes que ellos tienen para… para que la ciudad siga ordenada. O sea, están tratando de ver cómo… los planes de ordenamiento de la ciudad… los… están acorde con el nivel de crecimiento actual que ha sido mayor que lo que ellos esperaban.

¿Y la gente… hay muchos, por ejemplo, mucha gente de… de América Latina también?

Bueno, si supieras, Steve… lo que yo he podido ver, hay más gente de América Latina en Ontario que aquí, yo no… yo en verdad, no… no conozco toda la ciudad, la ciudad esta mucho más grande ¿no? de donde yo vivía antes, pero yo no sé por qué yo siento que hay más… había más latinos… hay más latinos en Ontario que aquí en Calgary.

¿Pero hay… hay también muchos inmigrantes, no? De Asia, de otros países…

Donde estoy… chinos, hay muchos… filipinos creo yo que hay bastantes, y hay de todo, como Calgary, yo creo que Canadá es una ciudad multicultural, que le abre las puertas a mucha gente de todos lados. Es impresionante, yo creo que Canadá basa mucho su economía y su… y su crecimiento en inmigrantes, me imagino, su política, ¿no?

Y la gente más ó menos se entiende, pero, hay como concentraciones ¿no? de chinos, ó de latinos, ó de filipinos, que… que… que… que se quedan un poco juntos entre sí mismo también ¿no?

Tú sabes que eso sí, y eso tiende a… no sé por qué la gente tiende a buscarse a ellos mismos, y yo sí me he fijado, por ejemplo, el sabado pasado fui a… a visitar lo que aquí llaman el “Chinatown”, que yo creo que Vancouver tiene uno de los Chinatown más grandes aquí en Canadá, creo. Creo que es el segundo más grande después de Toronto, creo. Y… sí, tú puedes ver que ellos hablan… se unen como grupo, como sociedad… y hablan chino, no hablan inglés. Y yo creo que, tú sabes que eso nos pasa a nosotros los latinos también, y yo creo que eso es parte a veces de que la gente no desarrolla bien el lenguaje por que tienden a… idioma latino, me imagino.

Pero…

Yo trato, yo trato de evitar eso lo que pueda, sí.

Sí, pero, yo creo también… bueno… si tú vas a Chinatown, vas a encontrar a los chinos que no… han… bueno, logrado a integrarse muy bien en la vida, por que hay muchos, muchos que viven en otros partes… en otras partes de la ciudad, no viven todos en… en Chinatown.

Sí, correcto. Es verdad, es muy cierto, eso es muy cierto. Eso es verdad, hay mucha gente…

… y estimo que la segunda generación ya habla inglés, que sea chino ó lo que sea, hablan inglés, y tienen amigos desde… bueno…

No, y hablan perfecto inglés, de verdad, eso es verdad. Muy cierto lo que tú dices, ya uno puede… uno puede ver hablando así chino, gente un poco más adulta, pero la verdad es que la mayoría de los muchachos, que yo he visto chinos en los autobuses ó eso, hablan un inglés perfecto, con un acento netamente canadiense.

Sí, sí, este es la segunda generación, sí. Hay que… bueno, quizás que… que… tu hija… pequeña va a olvidar su español, si tú no hablas…

No, no, yo voy a tratar de que… tú sabes que, Steve, ella… ella es un caso, ella es un switch, ella puede pasar de español a inglés sin problemas, y cuando habla… yo no sé cómo hacen los niños, es algo… realmente impresion… me impresiona un poco, por que cuando ella habla español, ella habla español con acento nuestro, y cuando habla inglés, habla inglés con acento como de Canadá. Yo no sé cómo hace.

Si, no, es… es… ¿cómo se dice? Bilingual, ¿no? perfectamente…

Ella puede estar…

… es muy importante poder hablar, y entonces ella, yo creo que… será más fácil aprender otros idiomas también.

Ella solamente está hablando acá y me dice que ella quiere empezar cuando llegue aquí a Calgary, espero que ya sea dentro de un mes, con su mamá aquí, ella va a empezar a estudiar francés, eso aquí, me dice. Entonces, yo creo que… sí… ella… es una grande… yo estoy muy contento, por eso, la verdad es que ella… es impresionante, ella habla conmigo español y de pronto le llama una niñita en el teléfono por inglés y se pone hablar con la niñita por inglés, y habla conmigo español sin ningún problema, Steve.

Bueno, yo creo que…

¿Si? Sí, sí. Y bueno… ¿el trabajo va bien? Ahora la industria del petróleo es un poco… bueno… los precios han bajado un poco ¿no?

Los precios han bajado un poco pero siguen sumamente altos, creo que ahorita está el crudo… ochenta y cuatro dólares por barril, eso es una grosería de alto. Mi experiencia… yo trabajé dieciocho años en la industria petrolera venezolana. Yo me recuerdo, Steve, que lo más alto que estuvo el barril cuando yo trabajé ahí, fueron veintiocho dólares, y fue una época donde se hicieron muchas cosas, muchos proyectos, y me acuerdo que también trabajé… trabajamos una época donde el barril tuvo como a… seis dólares que inclusive estaba por abajo del costo de producción, fue una época bien difícil, sobre todo para Venezuela, que Venezuela es un país que… sus ingresos están soportados netamente… al ochenta por cierto por exportación de crudo. Ahora… ochenta dólares… bueno, eso es para… nunca pensé que iba a llegar tan alto el crudo como está ahorita.

¿… por el señor Chávez?

Ah, bueno, imagínese usted. Bueno, pero fíjate que… a pesar de que uno… uno de los políticos, ¿verdad? Pero uno a veces se pone a pensar que con el precio del crudo tan alto y… y cuando uno ve tanta mejora en un país algo pasa, yo no sé, yo no quiero hablar de eso, pues…

¿Pero es cierto que en… en Alberta los… cómo se dice… la… los gastos… no… de… de la explotación del petróleo, sobre todo en los Tar Sands… Tar Sands… que es bastante alto, más alto que en Venezuela, por ejemplo…

… entonces cuando el precio está bajo, todo esto en el Tar Sands Fort McMurray no es… económic… económico… no puede ser… cómo se dice… rentable, no?

Sí, por que, el problema, Steve, es en la clase de crudo. Canadá… este… la mayoría de su crudo es pesado, cuesta más extraerlo, por que tienes… tienes que usar más tecnología, que la tecnología es más cara ¿no? En Venezuela tenía la ventaja hace unos años atrás, que el… el… cincuenta por ciento de su… de su… de su crudo, era crudo liviano, que era muy fácil la extracción, pero ahora, eso ha ido declinando mucho, entonces Venezuela le está cambiando también, es como Canadá ahorita…

… más caro…

… que la mayoría de su crudo es pesado, entonces le está ponie… la explotación está siendo más costosa. Cuando yo me vine, a nosotros nos costaba producir el crudo como unos ocho, nueve dólares por barril, en general, todo… y… pero había unas zonas muy buenas que el barril salía solo, tenía muy buena presión de yacimiento, y no había que hacer muchas cosas, ¿no? pero Canadá sí tiene que… sí… le sale más caro para su… yo creo que el noventa por ciento de… del petróleo canadiense es pesado, tengo entendido, y cuesta mucho más producirlo, por eso es que ahora, con el barril tan alto se le están abriendo unas oportunidades tremendas a Canadá, que ellas están aprovechando, están haciendo unas inversiones… extraordinarias. Yo creo que Canadá va a ser uno de los grandes productores de petróleo más importantes a nivel mundial, Steve. Yo creo que ya Canadá está produciendo más de tres millones de barriles, diario. Yo creo que está produciendo más que Venezuela ahorita.

Es… yo… yo… yo… yo sé… yo sé que las… ¿cómo se dice?... las reservas canadienses son…

Tremendas.

… tremendas, tremendas, pero muy costoso la exportación.

Es muy costosa la exportación, entonces… pero mientras los… los… el… el precio del barril siga así, es económico la explotación, ellos están tratando de sacar lo más que puedan ahorita que es rentable, yo creo que es una buena… una muy buena política, creo yo. Entonces se está produ…

Pero hay también… que dicen que… este… es muy malo para el medio ambiente, que hay que disminuír las…

¡Ah, ok! Pero, sí, pero tú sabes, Steve, yo estuve revisando eso, y yo creo que la industria canadiense está tomando muy en serio eso, en lo del ambiente… ellos tienen muy buenos proyectos para proteger el ambiente. Claro, eso no se va a proteger nunca al cien por ciento, eso es… yo creo que eso es mentira.

Algún daño… algún daño se hace, eso es imposible hacerlo con cien por ciento “free environment” eso es mentira. Es…

Y también por que… ahora… somos como siete… bi… milio… ¿cómo se dice? miliones… milion… miliones… de… de… de…

… billones ¿no? de habitantes en el mundo, entonces, bueno, es una presión sobre todos los recursos que hay en el mundo, pero también tenemos que decir que ahora… aún en los países pobres, la gente vive hasta la edad de setenta…

Setenta años.

… ochenta. Cien años atrás la gente se moría a la edad de treinta, cuarenta, entonces, no podemos decir que todo, que hay que hacer con la industria moderna… ? … bueno, que… no, no, yo creo que vivimos mejor ahora que hace cien años…

… pero hay problemas que tenemos que resolver, bueno.

Pero… ¿tú sabes? cuando yo leo, eso de… de las políticas ambientalistas, es muy interesante, sobre todo aquí en Canadá, donde, más que nada, las leyes se cumplen, y se cumplen bien, Steve. Yo sé que hay mucha gente que piensa que no, que… por ejemplo, uno ve la diferencia y simplemente aquí las leyes están para cumplirse, pues. Y… y tú ves los proyectos que está haciendo Canadá, yo creo que está haciendo un gran esfuerzo. Yo te puedo decir, por… por… por ejemplo, en Venezuela, yo cuando era niño, yo disfrutaba de un lago precioso, que es el lago de Maracaibo, yo… yo podía ir a la playa todos los domingos con mis padres y me podía bañar. Yo no pude hacer eso con mis hijos, por que el lago de Maracaibo está totalmente contaminado por el petróleo por que los gobiernos no hicieron nada, pues, absolutamente, y ese lago precioso, el más grande de… de América Latina está ahorita negado para los venezolanos, porque no se pueden bañar en… el ochenta por ciento de las playas, por que están contaminadas. Y eso… eso es triste, pues, es triste.

¿Pero se puede limpiar ahora, ó es… es… este… demasiado…?

No, eso cuesta… fíjate que, Steve, que volver a los… a los niveles de hace veinte años, va a… tardaría como treinta años.

Ajá.

Imagínate tú, de lo… de lo contaminado que está. Y mientras el país siga con problemas, de que… dinero, de que no se resuelvan las cosas, la presión sobre la producción va a ser tal, que… no van a… es imposible atender… esas cosas, entonces yo creo que… en Canadá yo creo que parte… producir ahorita. Yo estuve viendo la lista de proyectos de que están haciendo para… para los… para proteger el ambiente, y es bien interesante, y… y bastante dinero esta invertido ahí, Steve.

Ahora, que lo que va a estar cien por ciento seguro el ambiente yo creo que eso es imposible, cuando estás hablando de sacar petróleo. Algo se va a contaminar, eso… esa es mi opinión muy personal.

Lo importante es que cada uno puede mejorar su nivel… puede… aprender cualquier idioma que sea, pero, de que no necesita… necesariamente no necesita un profesor, necesita el idioma, contenido, cosas interesantes, escuchar, leer, hay muchas cosas que se pueden hacer, pero… sin gastar muchos dinero…

Sin gastar.

… si yo me compro un libro, si yo me compro un DVD en ruso, por ejemplo, que ahora estoy estudiando, bueno, si yo pago diez dólares, veinte dólares, este diez, veinte dólares es para un mes, dos meses, tres meses…

Claro, es muy bueno.

… y puedo disfrutar de este, escuchar muchas veces, muchas veces, y aprender, y a mejorar mi ruso. Si lle… si yo voy a una… una escuela, una hora es veinte dólares… finito, terminado, veinte dólares…

Bueno, tú sabes que yo… yo pasé un año en una escuela canadiense y… y… y… y se tenían que pagar ochocientos dólares mensuales, Steve, y cuando yo terminé me dieron un diploma, excelente estudiante nivel ocho, y no podía mantener una conversación de tres minutos con mi profesor, imagínate.

Sí, no, pero hay… hay poca gente que… que comprende que… esto depen… hay muchos, por ejemplo, inmigrantes, que dicen: “el gobierno debe… pagar más dinero, ayudar a los inmigrantes”. No, es…

Sí, por que… a mí lo que me preocupa, es siem… bueno, me preocupa no, no entiendes por qué, nuestra gente aquí, latina, era cuando yo estaba en Cal… por lo menos, en Ontario, yo… yo me cansaba de ir a reuniones y ellos decían: “ya yo no sigo estudiando por que yo no puedo hablar inglés” entonces eso a mí me… me… me ponía bravo, me sacaba de quicio. Yo le decía: “¿cómo vas a decir eso, si tú eres un ser humano que puede aprender lo que tú quieras, cómo vas a decir que tú no puedes hablar inglés?” Y lo creen, Steve, lo creen, por que han pasado uno ó dos años estudiando inglés en la escuela y salen sin poder decir nada.

Pero, no sólo… no solamente…

No aprenden, no aprenden, no aprenden nada.

… no solamente tus amigos de América Latina. La… la mayoría… la mayoría de la gente que empiezan a aprender… a aprender un idioma, no creen que pueden aprender a hablar con fluidez. No tienen la confianza de poder hablar, y lo más importante es… es… es… ¿cómo se dice? poner… ponerse en… en la posición, en… en… en… tener la iniciativa, ¿no? y crear… creer en sí mismo. Anyway.

Sí, entonces lo que yo le quiero decir a la gente… a la gente latina que van a oír este podcast que por favor, que sí se puede, Steve. Yo estoy ahorita trabajando, hablando en inglés, hago presentaciones en inglés, entiendo cien por ciento el inglés. No hablo come un nativo ?... que de pronto eso lleva… tengo mi acento, pero… la gente me entiende, y puedo vivir tranquilamente hablando… yo no tengo problemas hablando con ella, gracias a…
