나는 1923년 1월 23일(음력 1922년 12월 7일) 평안남도 강동군 만달면 광청리 삼청동에서 4남매의 막내로 태어났다. I was born on January 23, 1923 (December 7, 1922 lunar calendar), the youngest of four siblings in Gwangcheong-ri Samcheongdong, Mandal-myeon, Kangdong-gun, North Pyongan Province. 그러나 출생신고를 늦게 하여 호적에는 1923년 2월 17일로 등재 되었다. However, due to the late registration of his birth, he was listed as February 17, 1923 in the family register.

아버지 황병덕은 평안남도 대동군 청룡면 이현리에서 출생하여 줄곧 그곳에서 살다가, 1910년 강동군 광청리로 이사하여 서당을 열고 학동을 받아 한문을 가르치면서 식구들을 부양했다. His father, Hwang Byeong-duk, was born in Lee Hyun-ri, Cheongryong-myeon, Daedong-gun, Pyeongannam-do, and lived there all his life, then moved to Gwangcheong-ri, Gangdong-gun, in 1910, where he opened a library and took in students to teach Korean literature to support his family. 어머니의 이름은 이덕화이며, 평양시 교외의 고방산 로화동 태생이었다. Her mother's name is Deokhwa Lee, and she was born in Rohwa-dong, Gobangsan Mountain in the suburbs of Pyongyang City. 나를 낳을 당시 아버지는 41세, 어머니는 46세였다. My father was 41 years old and my mother was 46 when she gave birth to me.

증조부와 외조부는 한학자였는데, 서로 친분이 두터워 사돈을 맺었다고 한다. His great-grandfather and maternal grandfather were Korean scholars, and they were very close to each other. 조부 황유문은 증조부의 3남이었다. His grandfather, Hwang Yoo-moon, was the third son of his great-grandfather. 아버지는 삼청동으로 살림을 나왔지만 조부는 백부 황병헌과 함께 이현리에 눌러살았다. His father lived in Samcheongdong, but his grandfather lived in Hyeon-ri with the centurion Hwang Byeong-heon.
