#82 – Gli anni '60, l'Italia all'ombra della dolce vita

Il centro di Roma, deserto, in piena notte. Una donna dai capelli biondi, lunghi e voluminosi, cammina da sola finché, quasi per caso, arriva davanti alla Fontana di Trevi. Senza pensarci due volte, ci entra e inizia a ballare. A un certo punto, arriva un giovane uomo che prima si siede sui gradini a guardarla, poi, quando lei lo invita, entra nella fontana anche lui.

Molto probabilmente lo avrai capito. È la descrizione, un po' semplificata, di una scena di culto di uno dei film più famosi del cinema italiano e mondiale. La dolce vita, di Federico Fellini, uscito nelle sale nel 1960.

Un film un po' onirico, ma con una base di realtà. La dolce vita, nella Roma di quegli anni, esiste davvero. Almeno, nella sua parte più ricca. Ci sono davvero locali aperti fino all'alba, attrici e modelle arrivate da tutto il mondo, giornalisti e fotografi che le seguono a caccia di retroscena per riempire le pagine della cronaca rosa dei giornali.

Ma la dolce vita non è solo questo. È un po' l'idea che associamo all'Italia negli anni Sessanta.

Un decennio in cui va tutto bene, tutti si divertono, ballano, scherzano, ridono. In poche parole, si godono la vita.

E se guardiamo ai prodotti culturali di quel periodo, ci sembra proprio così.

Nella musica, piano piano, entrano ritmi americani, a partire dal rock'n'roll, pronti a sostituire o a completare la tradizione melodica della canzone italiana. La cantante più famosa di quegli anni, Mina, conquista il pubblico con la sua voce meravigliosa ma anche con ritmi veloci e ballabili.

Negli stessi anni, il cantautore Raimondo Vianello pubblica un singolo che diventerà un tormentone. Si chiama Abbronzatissima, e parla di amore, di spiaggia, vacanze e naturalmente di abbronzatura.

Leggerezza e spensieratezza, spiagge toscane e notti romane. Che belli gli anni '60 italiani. Come sarebbe stato bello viverci.

Peccato che sia quasi tutto falso. E oggi ti racconto perché.

Da un lato è vero, l'Italia degli anni '60 è un Paese dove si vive bene. Sicuramente meglio che in altri Paesi, e sicuramente meglio che dieci anni prima. I dati economici lo mostrano. Cresce l'industria, crescono i consumi, cresce il reddito medio delle persone. Per le strade aumentano le automobili, nelle case ci sono sempre più frigoriferi e televisori. Una generazione intera scopre una cosa che fino a poco tempo prima era impensabile: le vacanze.

Allo stesso tempo, però, la crescita del Paese non è omogenea. Se da un lato, nasce una classe media che vive a pieno il boom economico, ci sono classi popolari che lo guardano da lontano e lo vivono con frustrazione.

Insomma, cresce il malcontento. E la politica non sembra capace di risolvere la situazione.

I democristiani hanno gestito perfettamente la rinascita dell'Italia dopo la guerra, ma non sono preparati per questa nuova fase. Molti di loro hanno capito fin troppo bene che per restare al potere, basta lasciare le cose come stanno e non cambiare niente.

Funziona? Fino a un certo punto. Perché le masse di persone scontente sono sempre più grandi ed esprimono la loro insoddisfazione votando per i partiti di sinistra, il Partito Comunista e il Partito Socialista. I veri avversari politici del potere democristiano già dagli anni '50.

Rispetto al decennio precedente, però, a sinistra c'è una novità. Dopo la morte di Stalin, si è rotta l'unità tra i comunisti e i socialisti. Quelli del partito comunista sono ancora fedelissimi all'Unione Sovietica. Quelli del partito socialista ne sono sempre più lontani.

E a questo punto, qualcuno nella Democrazia Cristiana capisce che è il caso di approfittarne. È chiaro che i comunisti sono ancora pericolosi, ma i socialisti no, hanno smesso di pensare alla rivoluzione. Lo dicono anche gli Stati Uniti, che in quel periodo hanno un'influenza fortissima sul governo italiano. L'ambasciatore americano a Roma approva, e anzi incoraggia l'idea che la Democrazia Cristiana faccia un governo con i socialisti. Un governo chiamato di centro-sinistra. Per fare riforme a favore delle masse e isolare sempre più i comunisti all'opposizione.

L'uomo scelto per governare con questa alleanza si chiama Ferdinando Tambroni, è un politico democristiano di secondo piano, ma diventerà presto un protagonista. Nel bene e nel male.

Tambroni ha il compito di negoziare in parlamento con i socialisti per fare un governo insieme. Le proposte sono allettanti, ma alla fine i socialisti rifiutano. Il progetto del centro-sinistra comincia con un buco nell'acqua.

Ma la cosa non finisce qui. Perché Tambroni è ambizioso, e poi ormai vuole essere presidente del consiglio. Con i socialisti, o senza. E visto che la sinistra non lo vuole sostenere, allora Tambroni chiede aiuto alla destra. E chi c'è a destra nel parlamento italiano del 1960? Il Movimento Sociale Italiano. Ovvero, il partito dei post-fascisti. Come abbiamo detto l'ultima volta, più fascisti che post.

Per molte persone è inaccettabile pensare che il Movimento Sociale esista e sia legale. Scoprire che può diventare un partito alleato del governo è la goccia che fa traboccare il vaso.

Nel luglio di quello stesso anno, i missini (cioè, gli iscritti al Movimento sociale) organizzano il loro congresso a Genova, una città di operai e portuali molto di sinistra. Il ricordo del fascismo per molti di loro è ancora fresco. Così, impulsivamente, decidono di andare in piazza per protestare. E da Genova, le proteste arrivano anche in altre città. In particolare, a Reggio Emilia.

Nell'Italia repubblicana, le proteste di piazza sono una novità. Nessuno sa bene come comportarsi. Il governo, guidato da Tambroni, va nel panico e ordina alla polizia di fare tutto per fermare le manifestazioni. Anche sparare, se necessario. Il risultato: dieci morti e centinaia di arresti.

La repressione però non funziona, anzi, causa ancora più rabbia. Alla fine, la situazione è insostenibile. Il Movimento Sociale annulla il suo congresso e Tambroni è costretto a dare le dimissioni. L'esperienza di un governo con l'appoggio della destra è durata pochissimo, giusto il tempo di uccidere qualche operaio.

Insomma, nello stesso anno della Dolce Vita e delle Olimpiadi a Roma, in Italia la polizia spara sulle persone che protestano contro i post-fascisti al governo. Niente male, vero?

Dopo le dimissioni del governo Tambroni, una cosa è chiara a tutti. Questa non è più l'Italia degli anni '50, che si accontenta della tranquillità in cambio di un po' di benessere. È un'Italia più matura che ha esigenze chiare. I giovani, gli operai e gli agricoltori non accettano compromessi. Vogliono risposte.

La politica a quel punto dimostra di avere capito. Non è possibile ignorare le masse popolari. Bisogna provare di nuovo a fare un governo con i socialisti. Per dire alle persone più povere che il governo è dalla loro parte e che non è il caso di fare rivolte e rivoluzioni.

Come sempre, il pallino della situazione è in mano alla Democrazia Cristiana. Il politico che prova a formare un nuovo governo di centro-sinistra è un democristiano pugliese, un uomo molto stimato e di cui presto parleremo tantissimo. Aldo Moro.

Moro è un politico più bravo di Tambroni. Convince i socialisti a partecipare al governo con un programma ambizioso e di sinistra, anche se moderata. Sembra il compromesso giusto.

Solo che la DC è un partito grande, con tante anime interne. E non sono tutti d'accordo con quest'idea. Per esempio, non è d'accordo il Presidente della Repubblica Antonio Segni. Un uomo famoso per due cose: è basso e ha una paura folle dei comunisti.

Segni pensa che fare un governo con i socialisti sia un grosso errore, che aprirà le porte al comunismo sovietico. Ma non può fare niente di diretto per impedire l'alleanza di governo. Così progetta un piano di emergenza segretissimo in collaborazione con il Comandante dei Carabinieri. Si chiama Piano Solo, perché riguarderebbe solo i Carabinieri, e descrive cosa fare in caso di rivoluzione comunista. Contiene una lista molto precisa di circa 700 persone da arrestare subito. E poi spiega come mettere sotto il controllo dei Carabinieri la radio e la tv, ma anche le ferrovie, i telefoni e le poste.

Il piano è segreto, ma nei palazzi romani evidentemente qualcuno mangia la foglia. Si sente la pressione. Il nuovo progetto di un governo di centro-sinistra è un altro fiasco e alla fine la Democrazia Cristiana cambia idea, tornando a fare quello che ha fatto fino a ora. Governare da sola, per gestire le cose come sono senza provare a cambiarle.

Oggi, dopo attente indagini, sappiamo che non era così. Non ci sono prove in proposito. Di certo, però, il Piano Solo proponeva soluzioni reazionarie e violente ai cambiamenti della società italiana. Cambiamenti che evidentemente facevano molta molta paura.

Mi ripeto. Negli anni della Dolce Vita e delle vacanze al mare, la polizia spara ai civili nelle piazze e il Presidente della Repubblica organizza complotti segreti anticomunisti. Non sono questi gli anni '60 italiani che immaginavate, non è vero?

Com'è che succede tutto questo? Com'è possibile che l'Italia dei film di Fellini e delle canzoni di Mina sia anche l'Italia dei piani segreti, dei morti in piazza e dei post-fascisti che provano ad andare al governo?

La verità è che l'Italia non è poi così straordinaria. Gli anni 60 sono così un po' in tutto il mondo occidentale. È in corso la guerra fredda e tutto è molto delicato. Se guardiamo le cose in prospettiva internazionale, è il decennio dei Beatles, ma anche quello della crisi dei missili di Cuba. Sono gli anni in cui vengono uccisi Kennedy, Martin Luther King e Malcom X, ma anche gli anni dell'apice di Jimi Hendrix e della prima stagione di Star Trek.

Il mondo va veloce, molto veloce, e non è facile per tutti capire cosa sta succedendo.

Soprattutto in Italia, dove c'è un partito, la Democrazia Cristiana, che ha troppo potere. E per mantenerlo preferisce ignorare i cambiamenti anziché gestirli. In pratica, nasconde la polvere sotto il tappeto. Ma è una polvere che tornerà. Eccome se tornerà.

E la politica si mostra anche inadeguata di fronte a due gravi catastrofi naturali di quegli anni. L'alluvione che riempie di fango Firenze nel 1966, ma soprattutto il disastro del Vajont del 1963, quando un intero pezzo di montagna crolla dentro una diga artificiale e distrugge un paese intero, causando più di 2000 morti. A questa storia terribile, dedicheremo un episodio a parte.

Le gite in vespa, le domeniche al mare, la Roma dei locali, delle attricette e dei paparazzi sono tutte cose vere. Soltanto che non sono le uniche cose vere.

Oggi l'Italia ama raccontare questa immagine di sé, perché è buona da vendere ai turisti e alle persone innamorate del made in Italy, ma gli scheletri nell'armadio sono tanti. Ve ne ho raccontati alcuni, perché penso che sia importante conoscerli. È anche una forma di rispetto verso chi studia italiano, secondo me, dire le cose come stanno e non lasciare una visione edulcorata prodotta dal marketing.

Le cose complicate non finiscono con gli anni '60, anzi. Saranno anni sempre più intensi. Soprattutto quando arriverà sulla scena una categoria che prima non c'era: i giovani.

Certo, ovviamente da un punto di vista biologico i giovani ci sono sempre stati. Ma alla fine degli anni '60 diventeranno un gruppo sociale. Soprattutto perché saranno i primi giovani che non ricordano la guerra, che sono nati nel benessere o vicino al benessere. E saranno pronti a chiedere di più.

Le piazze diventeranno sempre più piene, la politica sarà sempre più penetrante e divisiva.

Qualcuno dice, e io sono d'accordo, che gli anni ‘Sessanta finiscono in realtà nel 1968. Da lì in poi inizia un'altra storia.

Una storia che racconteremo un'altra volta.
