5.10 Storia di un'associazione commerciale

Eravamo giunti dinanzi alla porta di casa della signora Malfenti. Egli non aveva più ritrovato l'aspetto di gioia per il divertimento di alcune ore che l'aspettava e, finché rimase con me, conservò stereotipata sulla faccia l'espressione del dolore cui io l'avevo richiamato. Ma prima di lasciarmi, trovò uno sfogo in una manifestazione d'indipendenza e - come a me parve - di rancore. Mi disse ch'era veramente stupito di scoprire in me un tale amico. Esitava di accettare il sacrificio che gli volevo portare e intendeva (proprio intendeva) ch'io sapessi ch'egli non mi riteneva impegnato in alcun modo e ch'ero perciò libero di dare o non dare.

Son sicuro di aver arrossito. Per levarmi dall'imbarazzo gli dissi:

— Perché vuoi ch'io desideri di ritirarmi quando pochi minuti or sono senza che tu m'abbia chiesto nulla, mi son profferto di aiutarti?

Egli mi guardò un po' incerto eppoi disse:

— Giacché lo vuoi, accetto senz'altro e ti ringrazio. Ma faremo un contratto di società nuovo del tutto, perché ognuno abbia quello che gli compete. Anzi se ci sarà lavoro e vorrai continuare ad attendervi, dovrai avere il tuo salario. Metteremo la nuova società su tutt'altra base. Così non avremo più da temere altri danni dall'aver occultata la perdita del nostro primo anno d'esercizio.

Risposi:

— Questa perdita non ha più alcuna importanza e non devi pensarci più. Cerca ora di mettere dalla parte tua nostra suocera. Questo e null'altro per adesso importa.

Così ci lasciammo. Io credo di aver sorriso dell'ingenuità con cui Guido manifestava i suoi più intimi sentimenti. Egli m'aveva tenuto quel lungo discorso solo per poter accettare il mio dono senz'aver da manifestarmi della gratitudine. Ma io non pretendevo nulla. Mi bastava di sapere che tale riconoscenza egli proprio me la doveva.

Del resto, staccatomi da lui, anch'io sentii un sollievo come se fossi andato appena allora all'aria libera. Sentivo veramente la libertà che m'era tolta per i propositi di educarlo e rimetterlo sulla buona strada. In fondo il pedagogo è incatenato peggio dell'alunno. Ero ben deciso di procurargli quel denaro. Naturalmente non so dire se lo facessi per affetto a lui o ad Ada, o forse per liberarmi da quella piccola parte di responsabilità che poteva toccarmi per aver lavorato nel suo ufficio. Insomma avevo deciso di sacrificare una parte del mio patrimonio e ancora oggidì guardo a quel giorno della mia vita con una grande soddisfazione. Quel denaro salvava Guido e a me garantiva una grande tranquillità di coscienza.

Camminai fino a sera nella più grande tranquillità e così perdetti il tempo utile per andar a rintracciare alla Borsa l'Olivi cui dovevo rivolgermi per procurarmi una somma così forte. Poi pensai che la cosa non fosse tanto urgente. Io avevo parecchio denaro a mia disposizione e quello bastava intanto per partecipare alla regolazione che si doveva fare il quindici del mese. Per la fine del mese avrei provveduto più tardi.

Per quella sera non pensai più a Guido. Più tardi, e cioè quando i bambini furono coricati, m'accinsi varie volte a dire ad Augusta del disastro finanziario di Guido e del danno che doveva riverberarne a me, ma poi non volli seccarmi con discussioni e pensai sarebbe meglio mi riservassi di convincere Augusta nel momento in cui la regolazione di quegli affari sarebbe stata decisa da tutti. Eppoi mentre Guido stava divertendosi sarebbe stato curioso che io mi fossi seccato.

Quando ritornai a casa all'ora della colazione, trovai Augusta perplessa e abbattuta. La sua faccia era coperta da quel grande pallore che non si produceva che per dolori che le provenivano da me. Mitemente mi disse:

— Ho saputo che hai deciso di sacrificare una parte del tuo patrimonio per salvare Guido! Io so che non avevo il diritto di esserne informata...

Era tanto dubbiosa del suo diritto che esitò. Poi riprese a rimproverarmi il mio silenzio:

— Ma è vero ch'io non sono come Ada, perché mai mi sono opposta alla tua volontà.

Ci volle del tempo per apprendere quello ch'era avvenuto. Augusta era capitata da Ada quando stava discutendo la quistione di Guido con la madre. Vedendola, Ada s'era abbandonata ad un gran pianto e le aveva detto della mia generosità ch'essa assolutamente non voleva accettare. Aveva anzi pregata Augusta d'invitarmi a desistere dalla mia profferta.

M'accorsi subito che Augusta soffriva della sua antica malattia, la gelosia per la sorella, ma non vi diedi peso. Mi sorprendeva l'attitudine assunta da Ada:

— Ti parve risentita? - domandai facendo tanto d'occhi per la sorpresa.

— No! No! Non offesa! - gridò la sincera Augusta. - Mi baciò e abbracciò... forse perché abbracci te.

Pareva un modo di esprimersi assai comico. Essa mi guardava, studiandomi, diffidente.

Protestai.

— Credi che Ada sia innamorata di me? cosa ti salta in testa?

Ma non riuscii a calmar Augusta la cui gelosia mi seccava orribilmente. Sta bene che Guido a quell'ora non era più a divertirsi e passava certamente un brutto quarto d'ora fra sua suocera e sua moglie ma ero seccatissimo anch'io e mi pareva di dover soffrir troppo essendo del tutto innocente.

Tentai di calmare Augusta facendole delle carezze. Essa allontanò la sua faccia dalla mia per vedermi meglio e mi fece dolcemente un mite rimprovero che mi commosse molto:

— Io so che ami anche me, - mi disse.

Evidentemente lo stato d'animo di Ada non aveva importanza per lei, ma il mio ed ebbi un'ispirazione per provarle la mia innocenza:

— Ada è dunque innamorata di me? - feci ridendo.

Poi staccatomi da Augusta per farmi veder meglio, gonfiai un po' le guancie e spalancai in modo innaturale gli occhi così da somigliare ad Ada malata. Augusta mi guardò stupita, ma presto indovinò la mia intenzione. Fu colta da uno scoppio d'ilarità di cui subito si vergognò.

— No! - mi disse, - ti prego di non deriderla. - Poi confessò, sempre ridendo, ch'ero riuscito di imitare proprio quelle protuberanze che davano alla faccia di Ada un aspetto tanto sorprendente. Ed io lo sapevo perché imitandola m'era parso di abbracciare Ada. E quando fui solo, più volte ripetei quello sforzo con desiderio e disgusto.

Nel pomeriggio andai all'ufficio nella speranza di trovarvi Guido. Ve l'attesi per qualche tempo eppoi decisi di recarmi a casa sua. Dovevo pur sapere se era necessario di domandare del denaro all'Olivi. Dovevo compiere il mio dovere per quanto mi seccasse di rivedere Ada alterata una volta di più dalla riconoscenza. Chissà quali sorprese mi potevano ancora provenire da quella donna!

Sulle scale della casa di Guido m'imbattei nella signora Malfenti che pesantemente le saliva. Mi raccontò per lungo e per largo quanto fino ad allora era stato deciso nell'affare di Guido. La sera prima s'erano divisi circa d'accordo nella convinzione che bisognava salvare quell'uomo che aveva una disdetta disastrosa. Soltanto alla mattina Ada aveva appreso ch'io dovevo collaborare a coprire la perdita di Guido e s'era recisamente rifiutata di accettare. La signora Malfenti la scusava:

— Che vuoi farci? Essa non vuole caricarsi del rimorso di aver impoverita la sua sorella prediletta.

Sul pianerottolo, la signora si fermò per respirare e anche per parlare, e mi disse ridendo che la cosa sarebbe finita senza danno per nessuno. Prima di colazione, lei, Ada e Guido s'erano recati per averne consiglio da un avvocato, vecchio amico di famiglia e ora anche tutore della piccola Anna. L'avvocato aveva detto che non occorreva pagare perché per legge non vi si era obbligati. Guido s'era vivamente opposto parlando di onore e di dovere, ma senza dubbio, una volta che tutti, compresa Ada, decidevano di non pagare, anche lui avrebbe dovuto rassegnarvisi.

— Ma la sua ditta alla Borsa sarà dichiarata bancarotta? - dissi io perplesso.

— Probabilmente! - disse la signora Malfenti con un sospiro prima d'imprendere la salita dell'ultima scala.

Guido dopo colazione usava di riposare e perciò fummo ricevuti dalla sola Ada in quel salottino ch'io conoscevo tanto bene. Al vedermi essa fu per un istante confusa, per un solo istante, ch'io però afferrai e ritenni, chiaro, evidente, come se la sua confusione mi fosse stata detta. Poi si fece forza e mi stese la mano con un movimento deciso, virile, che doveva cancellare l'esitazione femminea che l'aveva precorso.

Mi disse:

— Augusta ti avrà detto come io ti sia riconoscente. Non saprei ora dirti quello che sento perché sono confusa. Sono anche malata. Sì, molto malata! Avrei di nuovo bisogno della casa di salute di Bologna!

Un singhiozzo l'interruppe:

— Ti domando ora un favore. Ti prego di dire a Guido che neppure tu sei al caso di dargli quel denaro. Così ci sarà più facile d'indurlo a fare quello che deve.

Prima aveva avuto un singhiozzo ricordando la propria malattia; singhiozzò poi di nuovo prima di continuare a parlare del marito:

— È un ragazzo, e bisogna trattarlo come tale. Se egli sa che tu consenti di dargli quel denaro, s'ostinerà ancora maggiormente nella sua idea di sacrificare anche il resto inutilmente. Inutilmente, perché oramai sappiamo con assoluta certezza che il fallimento in Borsa è permesso. L'ha detto l'avvocato.

Mi comunicava il parere di un'alta autorità senza domandarmi il mio. Come vecchio frequentatore di Borsa, il mio parere, anche accanto a quello dell'avvocato, avrebbe potuto avere il suo peso, ma non ricordai neppure il mio parere seppure ne avevo uno. Ricordai invece che venivo messo in una posizione difficile. Io non potevo ritirarmi dall'impegno che avevo preso con Guido: era in compenso di quell'impegno, che m'ero creduto autorizzato di gridargli nelle orecchie tante insolenze, intascando così una specie d'interessi sul capitale che ora non potevo più rifiutargli.

— Ada! - dissi esitante. - Io non credo di potermi disdire così da un giorno all'altro. Non sarebbe meglio che tu convincessi Guido di fare le cose come le desideri tu?

Ma Ada non aveva esaurite le sue lacrime. Piangendo con la faccia celata nel fazzoletto, disse:

— Hai fatto male, molto male di fare quell'offerta veramente straordinaria! Ora si vede quanto male hai fatto!

Mi pareva esitante fra una grande gratitudine e un grande rancore. Poi soggiunse che non voleva si parlasse mai più di quella mia offerta e mi pregava di non provvedere quel denaro, perché essa m'avrebbe impedito di darlo o avrebbe impedito a Guido di accettarlo.

Ero tanto imbarazzato che finii col dire una bugia. Le dissi cioè che quel denaro io l'avevo già procurato e accennai alla mia tasca di petto dove giaceva quella busta dal peso tanto lieve. Ada mi guardò questa volta con un'espressione di vera ammirazione di cui forse mi sarei compiaciuto se non avessi saputo di non meritarla. Ad ogni modo fu proprio questa mia bugia per la quale non so dare altra spiegazione che una mia strana tendenza a rappresentarmi dinanzi ad Ada maggiore di quanto non sia, che m'impedì di attendere Guido e mi cacciò da quella casa. Avrebbe potuto anche avvenire che a un dato punto, contrariamente a quanto appariva, mi fosse stato chiesto di consegnare il denaro che dicevo di avere con me, e allora che figura ci avrei fatta? Dissi che avevo degli affari urgenti in ufficio e corsi via.

Ada m'accompagnò alla porta e m'assicurò ch'essa avrebbe indotto Guido di venire lui da me per ringraziarmi della mia bontà e per rifiutarla. Fece tale dichiarazione con tale risolutezza che io trasalii. A me parve che quel fermo proposito andasse a colpire in parte anche me. No! In quel momento essa non mi amava. Il mio atto di bontà era troppo grande. Schiacciava la gente su cui s'abbatteva e non c'era da meravigliarsi che i beneficati protestassero. Andando all'ufficio cercai di liberarmi del malessere che m'aveva dato il contegno di Ada, ricordando che io portavo quel sacrificio a Guido e a nessun altro. Che c'entrava Ada? Mi ripromisi di farlo sapere ad Ada stessa alla prima occasione.

Andai all'ufficio proprio per non avere il rimorso di aver mentito una volta di più. Nulla mi vi attendeva. Cadeva dalla mattina una pioggerella minuta e continua che aveva rinfrescata considerevolmente l'aria di quella primavera esitante. In due passi sarei stato a casa, mentre per andare all'ufficio dovevo percorrere una strada ben più lunga ciò ch'era abbastanza fastidioso. Ma mi pareva di dover corrispondere ad un impegno.

Poco dopo vi fui raggiunto da Guido. Allontanò dall'ufficio Luciano per restare solo con me. Aveva quel suo aspetto sconvolto che l'aiutava nelle sue lotte con la moglie e che io conoscevo tanto bene. Doveva aver pianto e gridato.

Mi domandò che cosa mi paresse dei progetti di sua moglie e di nostra suocera ch'egli sapeva m'erano già stati comunicati. Gli parvi esitante. Non volevo dire la mia opinione che non poteva accordarsi con quella delle due donne e sapevo che se avessi adottata la loro, avrei provocate delle nuove scene da parte di Guido. Poi mi sarebbe dispiaciuto troppo di far apparire esitante il mio aiuto e infine eravamo d'accordo con Ada che la decisione doveva venire da Guido e non da me. Gli dissi che bisognava calcolare, vedere, sentire anche altre persone. Io non ero un tale uomo d'affari da poter dare un consiglio in argomento tanto importante. E, per guadagnare del tempo, gli domandai se voleva che consultassi l'Olivi.

Bastò questo per farlo gridare:

— Quell'imbecille! - urlò. - Te ne prego lascialo da parte!

Non ero affatto disposto di accalorarmi alla difesa dell'Olivi, ma non bastò la mia calma per rasserenare Guido. Eravamo nell'identica situazione del giorno prima, ma ora era lui che gridava e toccava a me di tacere. È quistione di disposizione. Io ero pieno di un imbarazzo che mi legava le membra. Ma egli assolutamente volle io dicessi il mio parere. Per un'ispirazione che credo divina parlai molto bene, tanto bene che se le mie parole avessero avuto un effetto qualunque, la catastrofe che poi seguì sarebbe stata evitata. Gli dissi che io intanto avrei scisse le due quistioni, quella della liquidazione del quindici da quella di fine mese. In complesso al quindici non si aveva da pagare un importo troppo rilevante e bisognava intanto indurre le donne a sottostare a quella perdita relativamente lieve. Poi avremmo avuto il tempo necessario per provvedere saggiamente all'altra liquidazione.

Guido m'interruppe per domandarmi:

— Ada m'ha detto che tu hai già pronto il denaro in tasca. L'hai qui?

Arrossii. Ma trovai subito pronta un'altra bugia che mi salvò:

— Visto che a casa tua non accettarono quel denaro, lo depositai poco fa alla Banca. Ma possiamo riaverlo quando vorremo, anche subito domattina.

Allora egli mi rimproverò di aver cambiato di parere. Se proprio io il giorno prima avevo dichiarato di non voler aspettare l'altra liquidazione per mettere in regola tutto! E qui egli ebbe uno scoppio d'ira violenta che finì col gettarlo privo di forze sul sofà! Egli avrebbe gettato fuori d'ufficio il Nilini e quegli altri agenti che lo avevano trascinato al giuoco. Oh! Giuocando egli aveva bensì intravvista la possibilità della rovina, ma mai più la soggezione a donne che non capivano niente di niente.

Andai a stringergli la mano e se lo avesse permesso lo avrei abbracciato. Non volevo nient'altro che vederlo arrivare a quella decisione. Niente più giuoco, ma il lavoro di ogni giorno!

Questo sarebbe stato il nostro avvenire e la sua indipendenza. Ora si trattava di passare quel breve duro periodo, ma poi tutto sarebbe stato facile e semplice.

Abbattuto, ma più calmo, egli poco dopo mi lasciò. Anche lui nella sua debolezza era tutto pervaso da una forte decisione,

— Ritorno da Ada!- mormorò ed ebbe un sorriso amaro, ma sicuro.

L'accompagnai fino alla porta e l'avrei accompagnato fino a casa sua se egli non avesse avuta alla porta la vettura che l'attendeva.

La Nemesi perseguitava Guido. Mezz'ora dopo ch'egli m'aveva lasciato, io pensai che sarebbe stato prudente da parte mia di recarmi a casa sua ad assisterlo. Non che io avessi sospettato che su lui potesse incombere un pericolo, ma ormai io ero tutto dalla parte sua e avrei potuto contribuire a convincere Ada e la signora Malfenti ad aiutarlo. Il fallimento in Borsa non era una cosa che mi piaceva ed in complesso la perdita ripartita fra noi quattro non era insignificante, ma non rappresentava per nessuno di noi la rovina.

Poi ricordai che il mio maggior dovere era oramai non di assistere Guido, ma di fargli trovare pronto il giorno appresso l'importo che gli avevo promesso. Andai subito in cerca dell'Olivi e mi preparai ad una nuova lotta. Avevo escogitato un sistema di rifondere alla mia firma il grosso importo in varii anni, versando però di lì ad alcuni mesi tutto quello che ancora restava dell'eredità di mia madre. Speravo che l'Olivi non avrebbe fatte delle difficoltà, perché io fino ad allora non gli avevo mai domandato più di quanto mi fosse spettato per utili ed interessi e potevo anche promettere di non inquietarlo mai più con domande simili. Era evidente che pur potevo sperare di ricuperare da Guido almeno parte di quell'importo.
