5.8 Storia di un'associazione commerciale

Ritornato da quel viaggio e non so se egli avesse ricordata la sua promessa da sé oppure che Ada gliel'avesse richiamata alla mente - mi domandò se non sarebbe stato possibile di impiegare Carmen nel mio ufficio, cioè in quello dell'Olivi. Io sapevo già che in quell'ufficio tutti i posti erano occupati, ma visto che Guido me ne pregava calorosamente, acconsentii di andar a parlarne col mio amministratore. Per un caso fortunato, un impiegato dell'Olivi se ne andava proprio in quei giorni, ma aveva una paga inferiore di quella che era stata concessa a Carmen negli ultimi mesi con grande liberalità da Guido il quale, secondo me, faceva così pagare le sue donne dal Conto Spese Generali. Il vecchio Olivi s'informò da me sulla capacità di Carmen e per quanto io gli dessi le migliori informazioni, offerse di prenderla intanto alle stesse condizioni dell'impiegato congedato. Riferii ciò a Guido il quale afflitto e imbarazzato si grattò la testa.

— Come si fa ad offrirle un salario inferiore di quello che percepisce? Non si potrebbe indurre l'Olivi di arrivare a concederle intanto quello che ha già?

Io sapevo che non si poteva eppoi l'Olivi non usava considerarsi sposato con i suoi impiegati come facevamo noi. Quando si fosse accorto che Carmen avesse meritata una corona di meno della paga concessale, gliel'avrebbe levata senza misericordia. E si finì col restare così: l'Olivi non ebbe e non chiese neppure mai una risposta decisiva e Carmen continuò a far roteare i suoi begli occhi nel nostro ufficio.

Fra me e Ada c'era un segreto e restava importante proprio perché rimaneva un segreto. Essa scriveva assiduamente ad Augusta, ma mai le raccontò di aver avute delle spiegazioni con me e neppure di avermi raccomandato Guido. Neppure io ne parlai. Un giorno Augusta mi fece vedere una lettera di Ada che mi riguardava. Essa domandava prima notizie di me e finiva con l'appellarsi alla mia bontà perché le dicessi qualche cosa sull'andamento degli affari di Guido. Mi turbai quando sentii ch'essa si dirigeva a me e mi rasserenai quando vidi che come al solito si dirigeva a me per informarsi di Guido. Di nuovo non avevo da osare niente.

D'accordo con Augusta e senza parlarne a Guido, scrissi io a Ada. Mi misi al tavolo col proposito di scriverle veramente una lettera di affari e le comunicai ch'ero tanto contento del modo come ora Guido dirigeva gli affari, cioè con assiduità e accortezza.

Ciò era vero o almeno ero contento di lui quel giorno, poiché gli era riuscito di guadagnare del denaro vendendo della merce che teneva depositata in città da varii mesi. Era pur vero che egli sembrava più assiduo, ma andava tuttavia ogni settimana a caccia e a pesca. Io esageravo volontieri nella mia lode perché così mi pareva di giovare alla guarigione di Ada.

Rilessi la lettera e non mi bastò. Ci mancava qualche cosa. Ada s'era rivolta a me ed era certo che voleva anche mie notizie. Perciò mancavo di cortesia non dandogliene. E a poco a poco - lo ricordo come se mi avvenisse ora - mi sentii imbarazzato a quel tavolo come se mi fossi trovato di nuovo faccia a faccia con Ada, in quello stanzino buio. Dovevo stringere molto la manina offertami?

Scrissi ma poi dovetti rifare la lettera perché m'ero lasciato sfuggire parole addirittura compromettenti: anelavo di rivederla e speravo riconquistasse tutta la sua salute e tutta la sua bellezza. Questo poi significava prendere per la vita la donna che m'aveva offerta solo la mano. Il mio dovere era di stringere solo quella manina, stringerla dolcemente e lungamente per significare che intendevo tutto, tutto quello che non doveva essere detto giammai.

Non dirò tutto il frasario che passai in rivista per trovarci qualche cosa che potesse sostituire quella stretta di mano lunga e dolce e significativa, ma soltanto quelle frasi che poi scrissi. Parlai lungamente della vecchiaia incombente su di me. Non potevo stare un momento tranquillo senz'invecchiare. Ad ogni giro del mio sangue qualche cosa s'aggiungeva alle mie ossa e alle mie vene che significava vecchiaia. Ogni mattina, quando mi destavo, il mondo appariva più grigio ed io non me ne accorgevo perché tutto restava intonato; non v'era in quel giorno neppure una pennellata del colore del giorno prima, altrimenti l'avrei scorta ed il rimpianto m'avrebbe fatto disperare.

Mi ricordo benissimo di aver spedita la lettera con piena soddisfazione. Non m'ero affatto compromesso con quelle parole, ma mi pareva anche certo che se il pensiero di Ada fosse stato uguale al mio, essa avrebbe compresa quella stretta di mano amorosa. Ci voleva poco acume per indovinare che quella lunga disquisizione sulla vecchiaia non significava altro che il mio timore che trovandomi in corsa traverso il tempo, non potessi più essere raggiunto dall'amore. Pareva gridassi all'amore: «Vieni, vieni!» Invece non sono sicuro di aver voluto quell'amore e, se v'è un dubbio, risulta solo dal fatto che so di aver scritto circa così.

Per Augusta feci una copia di quella lettera lasciandone fuori la disquisizione sulla vecchiaia. Essa non l'avrebbe intesa, ma la prudenza non nuoce. Avrei potuto arrossire sentendo com'essa mi guardava mentre io stringevo la mano della sorella! Sì! Io sapevo ancora arrossire. E arrossii anche quando ricevetti un biglietto di ringraziamento di Ada in cui essa non menzionava affatto le mie chiacchiere sulla mia vecchiaia. Mi parve ch'essa si compromettesse molto di più con me di quanto io mai mi fossi compromesso con lei. Non sottraeva la sua manina alla mia pressione. La lasciava giacere inerte nella mia e, per la donna, l'inerzia è un modo di consentire.

Pochi giorni dopo di aver scritta quella lettera, scopersi che Guido s'era messo a giocare in Borsa. Lo appresi per un'indiscrezione del sensale Nilini.

Io conoscevo costui da lunghi anni perché eravamo stati condiscepoli al liceo ch'egli aveva dovuto abbandonare per entrare subito nell'ufficio di un suo zio. Ci eravamo poi rivisti qualche volta, e ricordo che la differenza del nostro destino aveva costituito nei nostri rapporti una mia superiorità. Mi salutava allora per primo e talvolta cercava di avvicinarmi. Ciò mi sembrava naturale, e invece m'apparve meno spiegabile quando in un'epoca che non so precisare egli si fece con me molto altezzoso. Non mi salutava più e a pena a pena rispondeva al saluto mio. Me ne preoccupai un poco perché la mia cute è molto sensibile ed è facilmente scalfita. Ma che farci? Forse m'aveva scoperto nell'ufficio di Guido ove gli pareva occupassi un posto di subalterno e mi spregiava perciò, o, con la stessa probabilità, si poteva supporre ch'essendo morto un suo zio e lasciatolo indipendente sensale di Borsa, fosse montato in superbia. Nei piccoli ambienti ci sono frequentemente di simili relazioni. Senza che ci sia stato un atto nemico, ci si guarda un bel giorno con avversione e disprezzo.

Fui sorpreso perciò di vederlo entrare nell'ufficio, ove mi trovavo solo, e domandare di Guido. S'era levato il cappello e m'aveva porta la mano. Poi s'era subito abbandonato con grande libertà su una delle nostre grandi poltrone. Io lo guardai con interessamento. Non lo avevo visto da anni tanto da vicino ed ora, con l'avversione che mi manifestava, si era conquistata la mia più intensa attenzione.

Egli aveva allora circa quarant'anni ed era ben brutto per una calvizie quasi generale interrotta da un'oasi di capelli neri e fitti alla nuca e un'altra alle tempie, la faccia gialla e troppo ricca di pelle ad onta del grosso naso. Era piccolo e magro e si ergeva come poteva, tanto che quando parlavo con lui mi sentivo un lieve dolore simpatico al collo, la sola simpatia che provassi per lui. Quel giorno mi parve che si trattenesse dal ridere e che la sua faccia fosse contratta da un'ironia o da un disprezzo che non poteva ferire me, visto ch'egli m'aveva salutato con tanta gentilezza. Invece poi scopersi che quell'ironia gli era stata stampata in faccia da madre natura bizzarra. Le sue piccole mascelle non combaciavano esattamente e fra di esse, da una parte della bocca, era rimasto un buco nel quale abitava stereotipata la sua ironia. Forse per conformarsi alla maschera da cui non sapeva liberarsi che allorquando sbadigliava, egli amava deridere il prossimo. Non era affatto uno sciocco e lanciava delle frecciate velenose, ma di preferenza agli assenti.

Ciarlava molto ed era immaginoso specie per affari di Borsa. Parlava della Borsa come se si fosse trattato di una sola persona ch'egli descriveva trepidante per una minaccia o addormentata nell'inerzia e con una faccia che sapeva ridere e anche piangere. Egli la vedeva salire la scala dei corsi ballando o scenderne a rischio di precipitare, eppoi l'ammirava come accarezzava un valore, come ne strangolava un altro, oppure anche come insegnava alla gente la moderazione e l'attività. Perché solo chi aveva del senno poteva trattare con lei. V'erano tanti di quei denari sparsi per terra in Borsa, ma chinarsi a raccoglierli non era facile.

Lo lasciai attendere dopo di avergli offerta una sigaretta e mi diedi da fare con certa corrispondenza. Dopo un po' di tempo egli si stancò e disse che non poteva restare di più. Del resto era venuto solo per raccontare a Guido che certe azioni dallo strano nome di Rio Tinto e di cui egli a Guido aveva consigliato l'acquisto il giorno prima - sì, proprio ventiquattr'ore prima - erano quel giorno balzate in alto di circa il dieci per cento. Si mise a ridere di cuore.

— Intanto che noi parliamo qui, ossia che io attendo, il dopo-Borsa avrà fatto il resto. Se il signor Speier ora volesse comperare quelle azioni chissà a quale prezzo dovrebbe pagarle. Come ho indovinato io dove mirava la Borsa.

Si vantò del suo colpo d'occhio dovuto alla sua lunga intimità con la Borsa. S'interruppe per domandarmi:

— Chi credi istruisca meglio: l'Università o la Borsa?

La sua mandibola calò ancora un poco e il buco dell'ironia s'ingrandì.

— Evidentemente la Borsa! - dissi io con convinzione. Ciò mi valse da lui una stretta di mano affettuosa quando mi lasciò.

Dunque Guido giocava in Borsa! Se fossi stato più attento avrei potuto indovinarlo prima, perché quando io gli avevo presentato un conto esatto degli importi non insignificanti che avevamo guadagnati con gli ultimi nostri affari, egli lo aveva guardato sorridendo, ma con qualche disprezzo. Trovava che avevamo dovuto lavorare troppo per guadagnare quel denaro. E si noti che con qualche decina di quegli affari si avrebbe potuto coprire la perdita in cui eravamo incorsi l'anno precedente! Che cosa dovevo far ora, io che pochi giorni prima avevo scritte le sue lodi?

Poco dopo Guido venne in ufficio ed io fedelmente gli riferii le parole del Nilini. Stette a sentire con tanta ansietà che neppure si accorse che io avevo così appreso ch'egli giocava, e corse via.

Alla sera ne parlai con Augusta, che ritenne si dovesse lasciare in pace Ada e invece avvisare la signora Malfenti dei pericoli cui s'esponeva Guido. Mi domandò di fare anch'io del mio meglio per impedirgli spropositi.

Preparai lungamente le parole che dovevo dirgli. Finalmente attuavo i miei propositi di bontà attiva e mantenevo la promessa che avevo fatta ad Ada. Sapevo come dovevo afferrare Guido per indurlo ad obbedirmi. Ognuno commette una leggerezza, - gli avrei spiegato, - giocando in Borsa, ma più di tutti un commerciante che abbia un simile bilancio dietro di sé.

Il giorno seguente cominciai benissimo:

— Tu dunque ora giochi alla Borsa? Vuoi finire in carcere? - gli domandai severamente. Ero preparato ad una scena e tenevo anche in serbo la dichiarazione che giacché egli procedeva in modo da compromettere la ditta, io avrei abbandonato senz'altro l'ufficio.

Guido seppe disarmarmi subito. Avevo tenuto sinora il segreto, ma ora, con un abbandono da buon ragazzo, mi disse ogni particolare di quei suoi affari. Lavorava in valori minerarii di non so che paese, che gli avevano già dato un utile che quasi sarebbe bastato a coprire la perdita del nostro bilancio. Oramai era cessato ogni rischio e poteva raccontarmi tutto. Quando avesse avuta la sfortuna di perdere quello che aveva guadagnato, avrebbe semplicemente cessato di giocare. Se invece la fortuna avesse continuato ad assisterlo, si sarebbe affrettato di mettere in regola le mie registrazioni di cui sentiva sempre la minaccia.

Vidi che non era il caso di arrabbiarsi e che si doveva invece congratularsi con lui. In quanto alle questioni di contabilità, gli dissi che poteva oramai essere tranquillo, perché ove c'era disponibile del contante era facilissimo di regolare la contabilità più fastidiosa. Quando nei nostri libri fosse stato reintegrato come di diritto il conto di Ada e almeno diminuito quello ch'io dicevo l'abisso della nostra azienda, cioè il conto di Guido, la nostra contabilità non avrebbe fatta una grinza.

Poi gli proposi di fare tale regolazione subito e mettere in conto della ditta le operazioni di Borsa. Per fortuna egli non accettò perché altrimenti io sarei divenuto il contabile del giocatore e mi sarei addossata una maggiore responsabilità. Così invece le cose procedettero come se io non avessi esistito. Egli rifiutò la mia proposta con delle ragioni che mi parvero buone. Era di malaugurio di pagare così subito i suoi debiti ed è una superstizione divulgatissima a tutti i tavoli da giuoco che il denaro altrui porti fortuna. Io non ci credo, ma quando giuoco non trascuro neppur io alcuna prudenza.

Per un certo tempo mi feci dei rimproveri di aver accolte le comunicazioni di Guido senz'alcuna protesta. Ma quando vidi comportarsi allo stesso modo la signora Malfenti che mi raccontò come suo marito aveva saputo guadagnare dei bei denari alla borsa, eppoi anche Ada, dalla quale sentii considerare il giuoco come un qualsiasi genere di commercio, compresi che assolutamente a questo riguardo non si avrebbe potuto movermi alcun rimprovero. Per arrestare Guido su quella china non sarebbe bastata la mia protesta che non avrebbe avuta alcun'efficacia se non fosse stata appoggiata da tutti i membri della famiglia.

Fu così che Guido continuò a giocare, e tutta la sua famiglia con lui. Ero anch'io della comitiva, tant'è vero ch'entrai in una relazione d'amicizia alquanto curiosa col Nilini. È sicuro ch'io non potevo soffrirlo perché lo sentivo ignorante e presuntuoso, ma pare che per riguardo a Guido, che da lui aspettava i buoni consigli, sapessi celare tanto bene i miei sentimenti ch'egli finì col credere di avere in me un amico devoto. Non nego che forse la mia gentilezza con lui fosse anche dovuta al desiderio di evitare quel malessere che m'aveva dato la sua inimicizia, tanto forte causa quell'ironia che rideva sulla sua brutta faccia. Ma non gli usai mai altre gentilezze fuori di quella di porgergli la mano e il saluto quando veniva e se ne andava. Egli invece fu gentilissimo ed io non seppi non accettare le sue cortesie con gratitudine, ciò ch'è veramente la massima gentilezza che si possa usare a questo mondo. Mi procurava delle sigarette di contrabbando e me le faceva pagare quello che gli costavano, cioè molto poco. Se mi fosse stato più simpatico avrebbe potuto indurmi a giocare col suo mezzo; non lo feci mai, solo per non vederlo più di spesso.

Lo vedevo anzi troppo! Passava delle ore nel nostro ufficio ad onta che - com'era facile di accorgersene - non fosse innamorato di Carmen. Veniva a tener compagnia proprio a me. Pare si fosse prefisso d'istruirmi nella politica in cui egli era profondo causa la Borsa. Mi presentava le grandi potenze come un giorno si stringevano la mano e si pigliavano a schiaffi il giorno seguente. Non so se abbia indovinato il futuro perché io per antipatia non lo stetti mai a sentire. Conservavo un sorriso ebete, stereotipato. Il nostro malinteso sarà certo dipeso da un'interpretazione errata del mio sorriso che gli sarà parso d'ammirazione. Io non ne ho colpa.

So solo le cose che ripeteva ogni giorno. Potei accorgermi ch'egli era un italiano di color dubbio perché gli pareva che per Trieste fosse meglio di restare austriaca. Adorava la Germania e specialmente i treni ferroviari tedeschi che arrivavano con tanta precisione. Era socialista a modo suo e avrebbe voluto fosse proibito che una singola persona possedesse più di centomila corone. Non risi un giorno in cui, conversando con Guido, egli ammise di possedere proprio centomila corone e non un centesimo in più. Non risi, e non gli domandai neppure se guadagnando dell'altro denaro avrebbe modificata la sua teoria. La nostra era una relazione veramente strana. Io non sapevo ridere né con lui né di lui.

Quando aveva snocciolata qualche sua sentenza, si ergeva di tanto sulla sua poltrona che i suoi occhi guardavano il soffitto mentre a me restava rivolto il buco che io dicevo mandibolare. E vedeva con quel buco! Volli talvolta approfittare di quella sua posizione per pensare ad altro, ma egli richiamava la mia attenzione domandandomi subito:

— Mi stai a sentire?

Dopo di quella sua simpatica effusione, Guido per lungo tempo non mi parlò dei suoi affari. Qualche cosa me ne diceva dapprima il Nilini, ma anche lui si fece poi più riservato. Da Ada stessa seppi che Guido continuava a guadagnare.

Quand'essa ritornò, la trovai di nuovo imbruttita parecchio. Era piuttosto imbolsita che ingrassata. Le sue guancie, ricresciute, erano anche questa volta fuori di posto e le facevano una faccia quasi quadrata. Gli occhi avevano continuato a sformare la loro incassatura. La mia sorpresa fu grande, perché da Guido ed altri ch'erano stati a trovarla, avevo sentito dire che ogni giorno che passava le apportava nuova forza e salute. Ma la salute della donna è in primo luogo la sua bellezza.

Con Ada ebbi altre sorprese. Mi salutò affettuosamente, ma non altrimenti di quanto avesse salutata Augusta. Non c'era fra di noi più alcun segreto e certamente essa non ricordava più di aver pianto al ricordo di avermi fatto soffrire tanto. Tanto meglio! Essa dimenticava infine i suoi diritti su di me! Ero il suo buon cognato e mi amava solo perché ritrovava immutati i miei affettuosi rapporti con mia moglie, che formavano sempre l'ammirazione di casa Malfenti.

Un giorno feci una scoperta che mi sorprese assai. Ada si credeva ancora bella! Lontano, sul lago, le avevano fatta la corte ed era evidente ch'essa gioiva dei suoi successi. Probabilmente li esagerava perché mi pareva fosse un eccesso il pretendere di aver dovuto lasciare quella villeggiatura per sottrarsi alle persecuzioni di un innamorato. Ammetto che qualche cosa di vero ci possa essere stato, perché probabilmente ella poteva apparire meno brutta a chi prima non l'aveva conosciuta. Ma già, non tanto, con quegli occhi e quel colorito e quella forma di faccia! A noi essa appariva più brutta perché, ricordando com'era stata, scorgevamo più evidenti le devastazioni compiute dalla malattia.

Invitammo una sera Guido e lei a casa nostra. Fu un ritrovo gradevole, veramente di famiglia. Pareva la continuazione di quel nostro fidanzamento a quattro. Ma la chioma di Ada non era illuminata da alcuna luce.

Al momento di dividerci, io, per aiutarla a indossare il mantello, restai per un istante solo con lei. Ebbi subito un senso un po' differente delle nostre relazioni. Eravamo lasciati soli e forse potevamo dirci quello che in presenza degli altri non volevamo. Mentre l'aiutavo, riflettei e finii col trovare quello che dovevo dirle:

— Tu sai ch'egli ora giuoca! - le dissi con voce seria. Mi viene talvolta il dubbio ch'io con tali parole avessi voluto rievocare l'ultimo nostro ritrovo che non ammettevo fosse talmente dimenticato.

— Sì - essa disse sorridendo, - e fa molto bene. È divenuto bravo abbastanza, a quanto mi dicono.

Risi con lei, forte. Mi sentivo sollevato da ogni responsabilità. Andandosene essa mormorò:

— Quella Carmen è sempre nel vostro ufficio?

Non arrivai a rispondere perché corse via. Fra di noi non c'era più il nostro passato. C'era però la sua gelosia. Quella era viva come nell'ultimo nostro incontro.

Adesso, ripensandoci, trovo che avrei dovuto accorgermi molto tempo prima di esserne espressamente avvisato, che Guido aveva cominciato a perdere in Borsa. Sparve dalla sua faccia l'aria di trionfo che l'aveva illuminata e manifestò di nuovo quella grande ansietà per quel bilancio chiuso a quel modo.

— Perché te ne preoccupi - gli domandai io nella mia innocenza - quando hai già in tasca quello che occorre per rendere del tutto reali queste registrazioni? Avendo tanti denari non si va in carcere. - Allora, come lo seppi poi, egli in tasca non aveva più nulla.

Credetti tanto fermamente ch'egli avesse legata a sé la fortuna che non tenni conto di tanti indizii che avrebbero potuto convincermi altrimenti.
