第 二 章 彼 は 誰 に 会い たかった か ？【3】

なんだか んだ と ぼやき ながら も 床 を 出て 服 を 着替えた 勝治 を 、祐一 が 車 で 病院 へ 連れて いった 。

たかが 五十 メートル 先 の 駐車場 ぐらい まで 、歩け ない はず も ない のだ が 、勝治 は 、「玄関 先 まで 、車 持ってこい 」と 命じて 、祐一 は 面倒臭そう な 顔 を しながら も 素直に 車 を とりに いった 。

祐一 が 後部 座席 に バッグ を 投げ入れた あと 、シート を 戻した 助手 席 に 、勝治 は 不機嫌 そうに 乗り込んだ 。

運転 席 へ 回り込む 祐一 に 、「 婦長 さん が おら ん やったら 、 今村 さんって いう 看護 婦 さん が 担当 やけん 」 と 房枝 は 声 を かけた 。

古い 民家 の 建ち 並ぶ 暗い 路地 に 、祐一 の 白い 車 は 不似合い だった 。

ステレオ だ か ラジオ だ か 分からない が 、車内 に ともる 細かい 光 が 、まるで 季節外れ の 蛍 の 群れ の ように 見える 。

房枝 が 助手 席 の ドア を 閉める と 、車 は すぐに 発車 した 。

遠く に 聞こえて いた 波 音 が 、一瞬 、車 の エンジン 音 に 掻き消さ れ る 。

路地 を 抜けて いく 車 を 見送り 、房枝 は すぐに 台所 へ 戻って 後片付け を した 。

片付け が 済む と 、あちこち の 電気 を 消して 回り 、草履 を つっかけて 公民館 へ 出かけた 。

風 は 冷たかった が 、海 は 凪 で いた 。

港 内 に 繋がれた 漁船 を 月 が 照らし 、頭上 で ときおり 電線 が 風 になぶられて 音 を 立てた 。

ぽつ ん ぽつんと 街灯 の 立つ 岸壁 に 、やはり 公民館 へ 向かっている 岡崎 の ばあさん の 姿 が 見え 、房枝 は 足 を 速めた 。

月明かり の 小さな 漁港 の 岸壁 を 、のんびり と 歩いていく 老婆 の 後ろ姿 は 、どこか 不気味に も 、滑稽に も 見える 。

「ばあちゃん も 、今 から ね 」

横 に 並んで 声 を かける と 、ショッピングカート を 杖 代わり に 歩いて いた ばあさん が 足 を 止め 、「ああ 、房枝 さん ね 」と 顔 を 上げる 。

「この前 、もろう た 漢方薬 、飲んで みた ね ？ 」 と 房枝 は 訊 いた 。

ゆっくり と 歩き 出した 岡崎 の ばあさん が 、「 やっぱり 、 ちょっと 調子 よ かもん ねぇ 」 と 答える 。

「そう やろ ？ 私 も 半信半疑 で 飲んで みた と やけど 、どうも 飲んだ 翌朝 は からだ の 調子 が いい と さねえ 」

一 カ月 ほど 前 から 町 の 小さな 公民館 で 、製薬会社 の 主催 する 健康 セミナー が 開かれていた 。

本社 は 東京 に ある という 。

興味 が あった わけで も ない が 、婦人 会長 たち に 誘わ れて 、房枝 も 毎回 参加 して いた 。

岸壁 を 歩いて いる と 、海 を 渡って きた 寒風 に からだ の 節々 が 痛く なる 。

漁港 独特 の 潮 の におい が 寒風 と 混じり合い 、感覚 の なくなり かけた 鼻 を くすぐる 。

房枝 は ショッピングカート を 押す 岡崎 の ばあさん に 、少し でも 寒風 が 当たら ない ように と 、わざと 海 側 を 歩いた 。

「そうそう 、今度 、また 祐一 に 米 を お願い できんかねぇ ……あんたん と この 買い物 の 、ついで で よ か とばってん 」

公民館 が 見えた 辺り で 、岡崎 の ばあさん が 言った 。

「あら 、早う 言えば いい と に 、ちょうど この 前 、頼んだ ばっかり やった とに 」

房枝 は 岡崎 の ばあさん の 背 を 押す ように 公民館 へ の 路地 に 入った 。

「そこ の 大丸 ストア に 配達 して もらって も よか と けど 、十 キロ で 四千 円 以上 も する くせに 、配達料 が 三百 円 かかる と さ 」

「大丸 ストア なんか で 買う もん が ある もん ね 。 十 キロ で 四千 円 て ？ 向こう の 安売り ストア まで 車 で 行って もらえば 、それ こそ 半額 で 買える と に 」

房枝 は 石段 に 足 を かけた 岡崎 の ばあさん の 手 を とった 。

ばあさん が 房枝 の 手首 を ぐっと 握って 石段 を 上がる 。

「そりゃ 、知 っと る さ 。 ばってんうちには房枝さんちのように、車で米を買いに行ってくれる者がおらんもん」

「水臭 かこ と 言う ねぇ 。 それ くらい いつでも 頼んで くれれば よか と に 。 どうせ うち でも 祐一 に 頼んで 買い出し して もらう と や もん 。 その ついで に 、なんて こと ない と やけん 」

短い 石段 の 突き当たり に 、まるで 神社 の ような 門構え の 公民館 が あった 。

そこ に 屋内 の 蛍光灯 に 照らされて 、こちら を 見下ろしている 影 が ある 。

「まだ 米 は 残っとる と やろ ？ と 房枝 は 訊 いた 。

最後 の 石段 を 上がった 岡崎 の ばあさん が 、「まだ 四 、五 日 は 大丈夫 」と 心細げ に 呟く 。

「明日 に でも 祐一 に 行かせる けん 」

そう 言った 房枝 の 言葉 に 重なる ように 、公民館 の ほう から 、「岡崎 の おばあちゃんたち やろ ？ よう 来た ねぇ 」

と 声 が した 。

こちら を 眺めて いた 影 は 、健康 セミナー で 講師 を 務めて いる 堤下 という 医学 博士 で 、声 と 共に 小太り な 男 が 駆け下りてくる 。

「この前 の 漢方薬 、試して みた ね ？ 堤 下 の 言葉 に 、岡崎 の ばあさん が 無理に 背中 を 伸ばして 、嬉しそうな 笑顔 を 向ける 。

堤 下 に 背中 を 押さ れて 公民 館 へ 入る と 、すでに 近所 の 人 たち が 集まって おり 、それぞれ が 好き勝手に 座布団 を 並べて 談笑して いた 。

房枝 は 岡崎 の ばあさん の 分 と 二 枚 の 座布団 を 運ぶ と 、婦人会 の 会長 を やって いる 早苗 の 隣 に 腰 を 下ろし 、早速 、先日 もらった 漢方薬 の おかげ で 寝る とき に 足 が 冷えない など と 感想 を 言い合っている 早苗 と 岡崎 の ばあさん の 話 に 耳 を 傾けた 。

すぐに 堤 下 が 紙 コップ に 熱い お茶 を 入れて もってきて くれる 。

房枝 は 、「 あら 、 すいません ねぇ 、 男 の人 を 使う て から 」 と 恐縮 し ながら も 、 盆 に 載せられた 紙 コップ を 受け取った 。

「ばあちゃん 、嘘 じゃ なかった やろ ？

あれ 飲んだら 、風呂 から 出て も 、ぽかぽか した まんま やった ろ ？ 堤 下 が 岡崎 の ばあさん の 肩 を 撫で ながら 、横 に 座り込む 。

「ほんとに ぽかぽか し とった よ 。 貰う た とき は 騙さ れ とる ような 気 が し とった けど 」

岡崎 の ばあさん が 大きな 声 で そう 言う と 、広間 の あちこち から 、「いや 、ほんと ねぇ 」など と 笑い声 が 上がった 。

「わざわざ 、ばあちゃん たち を 騙す ため に 、この 短い 足 で えっちらおっちら 、こんな ところ まで 来る もんね 」

堤 下 が 座った まま 、その 短い 足 を 伸ばして バタバタ と 動かし 、その 仕草 に ドッと 笑い が 起こる 。

一 カ月 ほど 前 から 始まった 公民 館 で の 健康 セミナー で 、 毎回 、 六十 歳 を 過ぎて から の 健康 管理 の 話 を して くれる の が 、 この 中年 の 医学 博士 、 堤 下 だった 。

最初 は 婦人 会 会長 に 誘わ れて 、嫌々 顔 を 出した 房枝 だった のだが 、こう やって 自分 の 短所 を ネタ に して 、冗談 混じり に 説明 を する 堤下 の 話 が 面白く 、今夜 など は 昼 過ぎ から 楽しみに していた ほど だった 。

「さぁ 、そろそろ 始め ましょう かね 」

立ち上がった 堤 下 が 、広間 に ちらばっている 町内 の 老人 たち に 声 を かける 。

中 に は 晩酌 で 焼酎 でも 飲んで きた の か 、顔 を 赤らめて いる じいさん も いる 。

「今日 は 血 の 廻り の 話 を し ます から ね 」

よく 通る 堤 下 の 声 が 広間 に 響く 。

小さな 壇上 に 上がる 堤 下 を 追う みんな の 顔 が 、まるで 高座 に 上がる 落語家 でも 待つ かの ように 、もう ほころび 始めている 。

壇上 の 横 に は 、最近 で は ペーロン 大会 で しか 使わ れ なく なった 大漁 旗 が かけて ある 。

夜間 の 病院 に は 独特 の 空気 が 流れて いる 。

重く 、寂しい だけ で は ない 。 もちろん 、陽気 で 、楽しい わけで も ない 。

その 夜 、金子 美保 は 待合室 の ベンチ に 腰 を 下ろす と 、病室 から 持ってきた 雑誌 を 広げた 。

まだ 八 時 前 だ と いう のに 外来 受付 の 明かり が 消さ れて しまった 待合 ホール は 、薄暗い 蛍光灯 の 中 、古びた ベンチ が 並んで いる 。

昼間 、ここ で 百 人 を 超す 人々 が 順番 待ち を していた と は 思えない ほど 狭い 。

人々 の 姿 が 消え 、夜間 の 待合 ホール に 残さ れて いる の は 、古びた ベンチ と 、カラフルな ペンキ で 床 に 示さ れた 各 病棟 へ の 矢印 だけ だ 。

ピンク 色 の 矢印 は 産婦人科 へ 。

黄色い 矢印 は 小児科 へ 。 そら 色 の 矢印 は 脳外科 へ 。

薄暗い 蛍光 灯 の 下 、カラフルな 矢印 だけ が 華やいで 見える 。

カラフル な 矢印 だけ が 場違い に 見える 。

ときどき 入院 患者 たち が ホール を 足早に 横切って 、たばこ を 吸い に 外 へ 出ていく 。

九 時 に なれば 、 ここ 正面 玄関 は 施錠 さ れ 、 喫煙 所 へ 出られ なく なる から だ 。 点滴 の ポール を 押し ながら 出て いく 者 、尿 パック を 片手 に 出て いく 者 、松葉杖 で 、車椅子 で 、それぞれ が 今日 最後 の 一服 を 求めて 外 へ 出て いく 。 同じ 病室 な の か 、初老 の 男 と 青年 が 野球 の 話 を しながら 歩いて いく 。 車 椅子 の 女性 が 携帯 で 夫 と 話 を しながら 出ていく 。

それぞれ が それぞれ の 病気 や 怪我 を 連れて 、寒風 の 吹く 屋外 の 喫煙所 へ 向かう 。

待合 ホール の 奥 へ 目 を 転じる と 、昼間 は つけっぱなし に されている 大型 テレビ の 前 に ベビーカー を 置いて 、今夜 も また 、髪 を 赤く 染めた 老婆 が ぽつんと 座っている 。

何 を する わけで も ない のだ が 、ときどき 思い出した ように 、ベビーカー を 揺すったり 、中 の 男児 に 、「なん ね ？ どうした と ね ？ 」と やさしく 話しかける 。

ベビーカー に は 小児 麻痺 の 男の子 が 乗って いる 。

ベビーカー に 乗せる に は 、少し 大き すぎる 男の子 で 、歪んだ 手足 が フリル の ついた ベビーカー から 突き出している 。

老婆 は 毎晩 、この 時間 に なる と ここ へ くる 。

ここ へ 来て 、返事 を しない 男の子 に 話しかけ 、痛がって 捩る からだ を 摩って あげる 。

病室 に は 若い 母親 ばかり な のだろう と 美保 は 思う 。

どんな 事情 な の か 知ら ない が 、若い 母親 に 囲まれた 病室 で は 居心地 が 悪く 、髪 を 赤く 染めた 老婆 は 、この 男の子 を 連れて 、毎晩 ここ に やってくる のだろう と 。

喫煙所 へ 出ていく 入院 患者 たち や 、ベビーカー の 男の子 を あやす 老婆 の 声 を 聞きながら 、美保 は 雑誌 の ページ を 捲った 。

病棟 の レクリエーション 室 に あった 二 カ月 も 前 の 女性 誌 だった が 、歌舞伎 役者 と 女優 の 結婚 を 報じる グラビアページ から 、一 ページ ずつ 丁寧に 読んで いった 。

担当 の 看護師 が 慌ただしく エレベーター から 降りてきた のは 、三分の一 ほど ページ を 捲った ころ で 、「あら 、金子 さん 」と 声をかけられ 、美保 は 小さく 会釈した 。

近寄って きた 看護 師 が 雑誌 を 覗き込み 、「 病室 じゃ 、 雑誌 も ゆっくり と 読め ん もん ねぇ 」 と 顔 を 歪める 。

「いや 、そんな こと ない と よ 。 ただ 、一日中 、病室 に おったら 、やっぱり 気 が 滅入って きて …… 」

「今朝 、諸井 先生 から 話 あった ろ ？ 「 はい 。

明日 の 検査 結果 が よければ 、木曜日 に は 退院 できる って 」

「よかった ねぇ 。 入院 して きた とき に 比べれば 、別人 や もん ねぇ 」

三 日 ほど 高熱 が 続いた の は 、二 週間 ほど 前 の こと だった 。

熱 は あった が 、やっと オープン させた 店 を 休む わけに も いかず 、無理 を 承知 で 働き 続けた 。 とつぜん めまい が して 倒れた とき 、運 良く 常連 客 が 一人 いて 、すぐに 救急車 を 呼んで くれた 。

検査 の 結果 、過労 と 診断 さ れた 。

肺炎 に なり かけて いた と も 言わ れた 。 小さな 小 料理 屋 と は いえ 、無理 が たたった らしかった 。

やっと 開店 させて 、たった の 二 カ月 で 休業 。

我ながら 、ついて いない と 美保 は 思う 。

立ち去った 看護 師 が 、今度 は 待合 ホール の 隅 で 、例の 老婆 と 話 を していた 。

「マモル くん は いい ねぇ 、いつも おばあちゃん と 一緒で 」

ベビーカー の 男の子 に 看護師 が やさしく 語りかける 声 が 、静かな 夜 の 待合 ホール に 響く 。

まるで 彼女 の 言葉 に 答える ように 、すぐ そこ に ある 自動販売機 の モーター が ウーン と 唸る 。

病室 に 戻ろう と 、美保 は 雑誌 を 閉じて ベンチ を 立った 。

自動 ドア が 開き 、寒風 が 吹き込んで きた の は その とき で 、たばこ を 吸い 終えた 人 が 帰って きた のだろう と 、何気なく 目 を 向けた 。

そろりそろり と 歩く 老人 の からだ を 支えて 、背 が 高く 、髪 を 金色 に 染めた 青年 が 入って くる 。

着 古 した ピンク 色 の トレーナー が 、妙に その 金髪 に 似合って いる 。

金髪 の 青年 は 、ほとんど 足元 に 目 を 向けて いた 。

老人 の 歩行 を 少し でも 楽に する ため なのか 、腋 の 下 に 差し込まれた 青年 の 腕 に 、かなり の 力 が 入っている の が 見てとれる 。

美保 は なんとなく 二人 を 眺め ながら も 、先に 歩き出して エレベーター の 前 に 立った 。

上 階 行き の ボタン を 押す と 、すぐに 扉 が 開く 。

入口 から ゆっくり と 歩いて くる 二 人 を 待つ つもり だった 。

中 に 入って 開 ボタン を 押して いる と 、大きな 柱 の 陰 から 二人 が 姿 を 現した 。

その 瞬間 だった 。

美保 は 慌てて ボタン から 手 を 離し 、突き指 して も かまわない ような 力 で 横 の 閉 ボタン を 押した 。

ドア は すっと 音 も なく 閉まった 。

閉まる 直前 、視線 を 上げ かけた 金髪 の 青年 の 顔 が 見えた 。

間違い なかった 。

老人 の からだ を 支えて いた 青年 は 、清水 祐一 に 違いなかった 。

美保 は 上昇 し 始めた エレベーター の 中 で 、思わず あとずさり 、壁 に 背中 を ぶつけた 。

もう 二 年 も 前 の 話 に なる が 、当時 美保 が 勤めて いた ファッションヘルス に 、祐一 は 毎晩 の ように やってきて 美保 を 指名して いた のだ 。

長崎 市内 最大 の 繁華街 に ある 、まだ オープン した ばかりの 店 だった 。

一階 に は ゲームセンター が あり 、通り の 向こう に 川 が 流れて いた 。 川沿い の 通り に は 看護師 や 女子高生 の 扮装 を した キャバクラ の 女の子たち が 立ち 、客引き している ような 界隈 だった 。

決して 奇妙な 行為 を 強要 する ような 客 で は なかった が 、最終的に は 彼 から 逃れる ために 美保 は その 店 を 辞めた ような ものだった 。

一言 で 言えば 、恐ろしく なった と しか 言い よう が ない 。 何 が 恐ろしかった か と いえば 、そんな 店 で の 出会い なのに 、祐一 が あまりに も 普通 すぎて 、それ が 徐々に 恐ろしく なって きた のだ 。

五 階 に 到着 した エレベーター を 降りる と 、美保 は 辺り を 窺う ように して 病室 へ 戻った 。

すでに 見舞 客 の 姿 も なく 、左右 に 三 つ ずつ 並べられた ベッド に は 、美保 の 場所 だけ を 残して カーテン が 引いて ある 。

美保 は 自分 の ベッド へ 向かう と 、すぐに カーテン を 閉めた 。

隣 の ベッド から すでに 眠って いる らしい 吉井 の おばあちゃん の 寝息 が 聞こえる 。

美保 は カーテン で 囲まれた ベッド に 腰掛け 、「別に 怖がる こと は ない 。

そう 、別に 怖がる こと は ない 」と 自分 に 言い聞かせた 。

清水 祐一 が 初めて 店 に 来た の は 、たしか 日曜日 だった 。

週末 は 朝 の 九時 から 営業 している 店 で 、この 時間帯 であれば 、いくらでも 言い訳 の 利く 妻 帯者 の 客 が 多かった 。

その 朝 、店 に 待機 して いた の は 、美保 と もう 一人 、大阪 出身 で すでに 三十 代 半ば に なる 女性 だけ だった と 思う 。

いつも の ように 待合室 で 客 に 相手 を 選ばせた あと 、マネージャー が 美保 を 呼び に きた 。

まだ 出勤 した ばかり だった 美保 は 、慌てて オレンジ色 の ネグリジェ に 着替えて 個室 へ 向かった 。

五 室 ほど 並んだ 個室 の 一 番 奥 の ドア を 開ける と 、二 畳 ほど の 室内 に 背 の 高い 男 が 突っ立っている 。

美保 は 笑み を 浮かべて 自己 紹介 し 、居心地 悪 そうな 若者 の 背中 を 押して 、小さな ベッド に 座らせた 。

この 時間 に 来る 客 は 、たいがい 言い訳 から 始める の が 常だった 。

一番 多かった の は 、「昨日 、徹夜 で 仕事 していて 、一睡 も せずに ここ に きた 」という もの で 、美保 に してみれば どうでもいい こと なのだが 、男 としては 早起き を してまで こんな 店 に 来ている 自分 が 、どこか で 情けなかった のだ と 思う 。

ベッド に 座る と 、祐一 は 狭い 室内 を きょろきょろ と 見回して いた 。

こういう 店 に 来る の は 初めて です と 、告白 している ような もの だった 。

店 の マニュアル 通り 、 シャワー 室 へ 誘う と 、「 風呂 なら もう 入って きた けど ……」 と 心細 そうな 顔 を する 。

汚れた からだ を 触らせよう と する 客 に も 見えず 、実際 、祐一 の 髪 から は シャンプー の 匂い も した 。

「でも 、そう 決まっ とる と よ 。 ごめん ね 」

美保 は 祐一 の 手 を 引いて 狭い 廊下 を シャワー 室 へ 向かった 。

シャワー 室 と いって も 小さな ユニットバス の こと で 、二人 入れば 自然 と からだ も 触れる 。

祐一 に 服 を 脱ぐ ように 言い 、美保 は シャワー の 温度 を 指先 で 整えた 。

振り返る と 、パンツ 一 枚 で 股間 を 押さえた 祐一 が 、どこ を 見て いい の か 分からない ように 、狭い 室内 を きょろきょろ と 見ている 。

「パンツ 穿いた まま 、シャワー 浴びる と ？ 美保 が 微笑 みかける と 、祐一 は 一瞬 だけ 躊躇った あと 、さっと パンツ を 下ろした 。

パンツ の ゴム に 引っかかった ペニス が 撓り 、下腹 に 当たって 音 を 立てた 。

そのころ 、美保 に は 年配 の 客 が 続いて いた 。

相手 を 選べる ような 職業 で は ない が 、正直 、勃せる だけ で 汗だく に なる ような 客 が 続く と 、吹っ切っている つもり でも 、自分 の 人生 に 嫌気 が さしてくる 。

美保 は 祐一 の 手 を 引いて 、ぬるい シャワー の 下 に 立たせた 。

お湯 が 肩 から 胸 へ 流れ 落ち 、痛そうな ほど 勃起した 祐一 の ペニス を 濡らす 。

「今日 、仕事 休み ？ スポンジ に 泡 を 立て 、祐一 の 背中 を 洗って あげ ながら 、美保 は 尋ねた 。

からだ を こわばら せて いる 祐一 を 、少し でも ほぐして やろう と 思った 。

「もし かして 、まだ 学生 さん ？ 背中 の 泡 を 流し ながら 尋ねる と 、「いや 、もう 働い とる よ 」と 祐一 が やっと 返事 を する 。

「運動 し よった と やろ ？ 筋肉 隆々 たい 」

特に 興味 は なかった が 、美保 は 場 繋ぎ に 祐一 の からだ を 褒めた 。

祐一 は ほとんど 口 を 開かず に 、じっと 自分 の からだ を 撫でる 美保 の 手 だけ を 見つめて いた 。

やけに 真剣な まなざし で 。

美保 が 泡立った 性器 に 触れよう と する と 、さっと 腰 を 引いて 逃げる 。

少し でも 触れる と 、我慢 でき ずに 射精 して しまい そうな ほど 、祐一 の ペニス は 脈打っていた 。

「恥ずかし がら んで よ か と よ 。 ここ は そういう こと を する 店 やけん 」

半ば 呆れて 美保 が 微笑む と 、祐一 は 美保 の 手 から シャワーヘッド を 奪い 、まだ 残っている からだの 泡 を 自分 で 流した 。

乾いた バス タオル で から だ を 拭いて やり 、先 に 祐一 を 部屋 へ 帰らせた 。

ユニットバス を 使った あと は 、必ず タオル で 水滴 を 拭き取る 規則 に なっている 。

掃除 を 済ませ 、個室 へ 戻る と 、腰 に バスタオル を 巻いた 祐一 が 、自分 の 服 を 抱えた まま 突っ立って いた 。

「この 町 の 人 ？ 」と 美保 は 訊いた 。

それ まで 客 に プライベートな こと を 尋ねた こと は なかった が 、自然 と 口 が 動いた 。

祐一 は 一瞬 躊躇 って 、美保 が 聞いた こと の ない 郊外 の 町 の 名前 を 挙げた 。

「私 、半年 前 に この 町 に 来た ばかり やけん 、よう 知らん と よ 」

美保 の 言葉 に 、祐一 の 表情 が 少し だけ 曇った 。

美保 は 祐一 の 背中 を 押して ベッド に 寝かせた 。

バス タオル を 取る と 、遠吠え でも し そうな ペニス が そこ に あった 。

正直な ところ 、一 度 きり の 客 だ と 思って いた 。
