1 Tunc Jesus ductus est in desertum a Spiritu, ut tentaretur a diabolo.

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.
||had fasted|forty|||forty|"nights"|afterwards|He was hungry
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he was hungry.

3 And approaching, the tempter said to him: If you are the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
|||it is written||||alone|bread|lives|man|but||every|word of God||proceeds||mouth of God|
4 He answered and said, It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

5 Then the devil took him up into the holy city, and set him upon the pinnacle of the temple, 6 And said to him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down.

For it is written: He hath given his angels charge over thee, and in their hands shall they bear thee up, lest perhaps thou dash thy foot against a stone.
For it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you and 'with their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'"
7 Ait illi Jesus : Rursum scriptum est : Non tentabis Dominum Deum tuum.
"He said"|to him||"Again"||||"shall not test"|the Lord|God|
7 Jesus said to him: 'Again it is written: You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'

8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them, 9 and said to him: 'All these things I will give you, if falling down you will adore me.'

10 Then Jesus said to him: 'Begone, Satan! For it is written: You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.'

11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

12 And when Jesus had heard that John had been betrayed, he retired to Galilee: 13 and, leaving the city of Nazareth, he came and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali: 14 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet: 15 The land of Zebulun, and the land of Nephtali, the way of the sea across the Jordan, the Galilee of the Gentiles: 16 the people that sat in darkness saw a great light: and as they sat in the region of the shadow of death, light arose for them.

17 Then Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

20 At illi continuo relictis retibus secuti sunt eum.
