날이 밝으면서부터 혹시 흥남역을 그냥 지나칠까봐 안달이 나 이 사람 저 사람을 붙들고 홍남이 아직 멀었느냐고 물으며 초조해했다.

기차 내에서는 안전원의 기차표와 통행증 검열을 여러차례 받았다. 심지어는 보따리 검열까지 하는 경우도 있었으나 이는 아주 당연한 일로 받아들인다. 멀리 바다가 보이기 시작하고 생선 비린내가 풍겨 오자 옆에 앉아있던 중년 남자가 다음 다음 정류장이 흥남역이라고 친절하게 알려 주었다.

차창 밖으로 어촌 풍경이 보였다. 집집마다 줄에 동태를 매달아 말리고 있었다. 드디어 15 시간의 기차 여행 끝에 우리는 흥남역에 도착했다. 기차에서 내리니 매운 바다 바람이 얼굴을 때렸다. 코가 다 얼얼해져 마후라를 끌어올려 코까지 덮을만큼 함경남도의 1월 날씨는 꽤 매서웠다.

흥남역 대합실에 들어가 안내원에게 신포로 가는 기차편을 물으니 오후 1시나 되여야 온다고 알려 주었다. 3시간을 더 기다려야 하므로 뻐스편을 물었더니 뻐스 정류소는 역에서 한참 걸어서 어디로 어디로 가라고 한다. 초행길이기 때문에 말로만 들어서는 어디가 어딘지 알아듣지도 못하겠고 큰댁에 이미 전보를 쳤으니 신포역에 큰댁 식구가 마중나와 있을 것이기에 그냥 대합실에서 기다리다가 기차를 타기로 했다.

대합실에는 긴 나무 의자 몇 개가 있고 한가운데에는 드럼통을 절반 잘라 개조한 듯한 난로가 하나 놓여 있었다. 초라하기 이를 데 없는 시골 역사 그대로였다. 난로 옆에는 머리를 산발하고 얼굴에 때꾸정물이 질질 흐르는 아주 더러운 행색의 정신이상자 녀자가 너덜너덜한 옷차림으로 마른 명태를 뜯어먹고 있었다.

언제나 ‘우리공화국은 거지가 없는 사회주의 락원'이라는 말을 귀가 아프게 들어온 나는 너무 놀랐다. 현수도 마찬가지였다. 평양에서는 이런 모습을 볼 수 없기 때문에 이런 녀자를 보니 마음이 이상해졌다.

‘우리나라에도 거지가 있나? ' ‘설마 거지는 아니겠지, 정신이 나가서 자기가 집을 뛰쳐나온 거겠지? ' ‘정신이상자라면 왜 병원에 안 보내나?' 기차를 기다리느라 대합실 나무 의자에 앉아 있자니 시간이 그렇게 지루할 수가 없었다. 12시가 넘어가자 배가 고파왔다. 아침에 밥곽을 도저히 먹기가 힘들어 몇 술 뜨다가 그대로 버렸더니 더 배가 고팠다. 대합실 주변에는 먹을 것을 파는 곳이라곤 아무데도 없었다. 생각 끝에 배낭을 뒤져서 큰댁 선물로 마련한 빵 중에서 4개를 꺼내 현수와 각각 2개씩 나누어 먹었다. 현수도 입맛을 다시고 나도 더 먹고 싶었지만 몇 개 안되는 선물이 축나는 것 같아 참을 수밖에 없었다.

신포행 기차가 온다는 시각인 1시가 가까워오자 매표구 앞에 사람들이 줄을 서기 시작했다. 평양에서 산 표는 흥남역에 내리면서 이미 무효가 되였으므로 우리도 줄을 서서 다시 표를 샀다.

흥남역에서 1시간나마 가니 신포역이였다. 신포역 역시 흥남역처럼 작은 역이였다. 현수와 나는 개찰구에서부터 목을 길게 빼고 두리번거리며 마중나와 있을 큰 댁 식구들을 찾았지만 방금 기차에서 내린 사람들과 기차를 탈 사람들이 모두 빠져 나가자 대합실에는 나와 현수 둘만이 남았다. 큰댁에서 마중나온 사람은 없었다.

이렇게 기차 시간이 엉망이니 나왔다가 되돌아갔나 보다생각하고 우리는 어쩔수 없이 큰댁을 찾아 나섰다.

우리는 용기를 내어 아버지가 적어준 주소와 략도를 펴들고 지나가는 사람들에게 묻고 묻고 또 물어 겨우 큰댁을 찾았다.
