Acts 18
Acts 18

18 1 After this he left Athens and came to Corinth: 2 and finding a certain Jew named Aquila, of the Pontic family, who had recently come from Italy, and Priscilla his wife (because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to depart from Rome), he approached them.
3 Et quia ejusdem erat artis, manebat apud eos, et operabatur.

3 And because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and worked.

(And they were stage-makers of art.)
|||||||interposing||||and he was persuading|||
4 And he debated in the synagogue every Sabbath, interposing the name of the Lord Jesus: and exhorted the Jews and the Greeks.
|||||||||||testifying||||
5 Now when Silas and Timothy had come from Macedonia, Paul insisted on the word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.

6 But to those who contradicted and blasphemed them, shaking off his clothes, he said to them: Your blood is on your head: I am clean: from this I will go to the nations.
7 Et migrans inde, intravit in domum cujusdam, nomine Titi Justi, colentis Deum, cujus domus erat conjuncta synagogæ.

7 And migrating thence, he entered the house of a man named Titus Justus, who worshiped God, whose house was connected with the synagogue.

8 But Crispus, the archsynagogue, believed in the Lord with all his household: and many of the Corinthians who heard them believed, and were baptized.

9 And the Lord said to Paul in a vision at night: Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not be silent: 10 because I am with you, and no one will come near you to harm you: because the people are many for me in this city.
11 And he sat there for a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.
12 Gallione autem proconsule Achaiæ, insurrexerunt uno animo Judæi in Paulum, et adduxerunt eum ad tribunal, 13 dicentes : Quia contra legem hic persuadet hominibus colere Deum.

12 But with Gallio, the proconsul of Achaia, the Jews rose up with one mind against Paulus, and brought him to the tribunal, 13 saying: Because he is persuading men to worship God against the law.
14 Incipiente autem Paulo aperire os, dixit Gallio ad Judæos : Si quidem esset iniquum aliquid aut facinus pessimum, o viri Judæi, recte vos sustinerem.

14 And when Paulus had begun to open his mouth, Gallius said to the Jews: If indeed there were any wrongdoing or wicked deed, O men of the Jews, I would rightly support you.
15 But if there are questions about the word, and names, and your law, you yourselves will see: I do not want to be the judge of these.
16 Et minavit eos a tribunali.

16 And he threatened them from the tribunal.
17 Apprehendentes autem omnes Sosthenem principem synagogæ, percutiebant eum ante tribunal : et nihil eorum Gallioni curæ erat.

17 And they all seized Sosthenes, the leader of the synagogue, and beat him before the tribunal: and Gallio was not concerned about them.

18 But when Paul had still endured many days, saying goodbye to many of his brothers, he sailed to Syria (and with him Priscilla and Aquila), who shaved his head at Cenchres: for he had a vow.

19 And he came to Ephesus, and left them there.
Ipse vero ingressus synagogam, disputabat cum Judæis.
But he himself entered the synagogue and argued with the Jews.

20 But when they begged them to stay a longer time, he did not consent, 21 but saying goodbye and saying: I will return to you again, God willing: he set out from Ephesus.
22 Et descendens Cæsaream, ascendit, et salutavit ecclesiam, et descendit Antiochiam.
22 And coming down to Caesarea, he went up and saluted the church, and went down to Antioch.

23 And when he was done there he departed for a considerable time, traveling in order through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
24 Judæus autem quidam, Apollo nomine, Alexandrinus genere, vir eloquens, devenit Ephesum, potens in scripturis.

24 And a certain Jew, named Apollo, of the Alexandrian family, an eloquent man, came to Ephesus, powerful in the scriptures.

25 He was taught the way of the Lord: and he spoke with a fervent spirit, and taught carefully the things of Jesus, knowing only the baptisms of John.
26 Hic ergo cœpit fiducialiter agere in synagoga.
26 He therefore began to act faithfully in the synagogue.

When he came, he brought much to those who had believed.

28 For he vehemently defeated the Jews publicly, showing through the Scriptures that he was the Christ Jesus.
