Actus Apostolorum (Acts of the Apostles), Acts 27

Acts 27

17 Qua sublata, adjutoriis utebantur, accingentes navem, timentes ne in Syrtim inciderent, summisso vase sic ferebantur.

27 1 Now that it was decided to sail him to Italy, and to hand over Paulus with the rest of the guards to a centurion named Julius of the Augustus cohort, 2 we embarked on board the ship Adrumetina, and began to sail about the parts of Asia, with Aristarchus the Macedonian of Thessalonica continuing with us. 3 Sequenti autem die devenimus Sidonem. 3 And the next day we came to Sidon. Treating Julius Paul humanely, he allowed him to go to his friends and take care of himself. 4 And when we had set sail from there, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary. 5 Et pelagus Ciliciæ et Pamphyliæ navigantes, venimus Lystram, quæ est Lyciæ : 6 et ibi inveniens centurio navem Alexandrinam navigantem in Italiam, transposuit nos in eam. 5 And sailing through the seas of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Lystra, which is in Lycia: 6 and there the centurion finding an Alexandrian ship sailing for Italy, put us on board. 7 Et cum multis diebus tarde navigaremus, et vix devenissemus contra Gnidum, prohibente nos vento, adnavigavimus Cretæ juxta Salmonem : 8 et vix juxta navigantes, venimus in locum quemdam qui vocatur Boniportus, cui juxta erat civitas Thalassa. 7 And when we had sailed slowly for many days, and had scarcely arrived at Gnidus, the wind hindering us, we sailed to Crete near Salmone: 8 and having scarcely sailed near, we came to a certain place called Boniportus, near which was the city of Thalassa. 9 And when a long time had passed, and when it was no longer safe to sail because the fast had already passed, Paul comforted them, 10 saying to them: Men, I see that with injuries and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our souls begins navigation 11 Centurio autem gubernatori et nauclero magis credebat, quam his quæ a Paulo dicebantur. 11 But the centurion believed the captain and the shipowner more than what was said by Paul. 12 And since it was not a suitable port for wintering, most of them decided to sail from there, if they could, coming to spend the winter at Phoenicia, the port of Crete facing Africa and Corum. 13 But aspiring to the south, esteeming their intention to hold, when they had taken off from Asson, they read Crete.

14 Not long after, however, a typhoon wind called Euroaquilus sent itself against her. 15 Cumque arrepta esset navis, et non posset conari in ventum, data nave flatibus, ferebamur. 15 And when the ship was seized, and could not venture into the wind, the ship being given to the winds, we were carried. 16 In insulam autem quamdam decurrentes, quæ vocatur Cauda, potuimus vix obtinere scapham. 16 And when we ran down to a certain island, which is called Cauda, we could scarcely get a boat. 17 Qua sublata, adjutoriis utebantur, accingentes navem, timentes ne in Syrtim inciderent, summisso vase sic ferebantur. 17 When these were raised, they used the auxiliaries, girding up the ship, fearing lest they should fall into the Syrtis, and were thus borne in a low vessel. 18 Valida autem nobis tempestate jactatis, sequenti die jactum fecerunt : 19 et tertia die suis manibus armamenta navis projecerunt. 18 And when a strong storm was thrown upon us, the next day they made a cast: 19 and on the third day they threw the munitions into the ship with their own hands. 20 But with neither the sun nor the stars appearing for several days, and with no small storm imminent, all hope of our safety had already been taken away. 21 Et cum multa jejunatio fuisset, tunc stans Paulus in medio eorum, dixit : Oportebat quidem, o viri, audito me, non tollere a Creta, lucrique facere injuriam hanc et jacturam. 21 And when there had been much fasting, then Paul, standing in the midst of them, said: It was indeed necessary, O men, after hearing me, not to remove from Crete, and to make a profit of this injury and loss. 22 And now I advise you to be of good mind: for there will be no loss of life among you, except the ship. 23 Astitit enim mihi hac nocte angelus Dei, cujus sum ego, et cui deservio, 24 dicens : Ne timeas, Paule : Cæsari te oportet assistere : et ecce donavit tibi Deus omnes qui navigant tecum. 23 For an angel of God stood before me this night, whose I am, and whom I serve, 24 saying: Fear not, Paul: Caesar must assist you: and behold, God has given you all who sail with you. 25 Therefore be of good cheer, men: for I believe in God that it will be so, just as I was told. 26 In insulam autem quamdam oportet nos devenire. 26 Now we must arrive at a certain island. 27 Sed posteaquam quartadecima nox supervenit, navigantibus nobis in Adria circa mediam noctem, suspicabantur nautæ apparere sibi aliquam regionem. 27 But after the fourteenth night had come, as we were sailing in the Adria about midnight, the sailors suspected that some country appeared to them. 28 And when they had sent up the bull, they found twenty paces: and a little separated from thence, they found fifteen paces. 29 Timentes autem ne in aspera loca incideremus, de puppi mittentes anchoras quatuor, optabant diem fieri. 29 Fearing lest we should run into rough places, they cast four anchors from the stern, and hoped that the day would be done. 30 Nautis vero quærentibus fugere de navi, cum misissent scapham in mare, sub obtentu quasi inciperent a prora anchoras extendere, 31 dixit Paulus centurioni et militibus : Nisi hi in navi manserint, vos salvi fieri non potestis. 30 But to the sailors who sought to flee from the ship, when they had put the boat into the sea, under cover, as if they were beginning to stretch out the anchors from the prow, 31 Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers: Unless these remain in the ship, you cannot be saved. 32 Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and suffered it to fall. 33 Et cum lux inciperet fieri, rogabat Paulus omnes sumere cibum, dicens : Quartadecima die hodie exspectantes jejuni permanetis, nihil accipientes. 33 And when it began to be light, Paul begged them all to take food, saying: Waiting for the fourteenth day today, fasting continuously, taking nothing. 34 For this reason I ask you to accept food for your safety: because not one of you will lose a hair from his head. 35 And when he had said these things, taking the bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat. 36 But they all became wiser, and they themselves took food. 37 Eramus vero universæ animæ in navi ducentæ septuaginta sex. 37 There were indeed two hundred and seventy-six of us in the ship with all spirit. 38 Et satiati cibo alleviabant navem, jactantes triticum in mare. 38 And being satisfied with food, they lightened the ship, throwing wheat into the sea. 39 But when it was day, they did not recognize the land: but they considered a certain gulf as having a shore, into which they thought whether they could launch a ship. 40 And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves to the sea, at the same time loosening the joints of the rudders; 41 Et cum incidissemus in locum dithalassum, impegerunt navem : et prora quidem fixa manebat immobilis, puppis vero solvebatur a vi maris. 41 And when we had come to a place where the sea was wide, they attacked the ship: and indeed the prow was fixed and remained motionless, but the stern was loosened by the force of the sea. 42 Now the plan of the soldiers was to kill the guards, so that no one should escape when he swam. 43 And the centurion, wanting to save Paulus, prevented it from happening: and ordered those who could swim to throw themselves first, and escape, and go to land: 44 and the rest, they carried others on planks, some on those that were from the ship. And so it happened that all the souls escaped to the earth.
