어떨 때는 지루합니다. 모든 외딴섬에 가 봤고 극지방을

정복했고 가장 깊은 정글도 뚫고 들어갔습니다.

하지만 아직 탐험할 곳이 한 곳 남아 있습니다. 칠흑 같은 어둠

속 미지의 생명체들이 사는 축축한 죽음의 사막 바로 심해입니다. 같이

내려가 봅시다. 지구의 거대한 바다를 보면 지구

생물량의 2% 미만만 바다에 산다는 것을 믿기 힘듭니다.

그리고 그 작은 비율 중 약 90%가 수면의 200미터 내에 살고 있습니다.

여기서 우리의 여행이 시작됩니다. 아직 빛이 물속으로 들어올 수 있어

광합성이 일어나는 곳입니다. 식물성 플랑크톤이라는 수조의

수조배 개의 단세포 조류와 박테리아 가 바다 생태계의 근간을 이룹니다.

그리고 이들은 더 큰 플랑크톤에 먹히고 그 플랑크톤은 다른 생물

에게 먹히죠. 이 깊이의 해저는 아마존 우림과

비슷하고 산호초 조류와 기타 해초 로 뒤덮여 수많은 해양 동물의 집

이 되어 줍니다. 우리는 지금까지 이 비교적 쾌적한 환경에 집중했습니다.

낚시를 하고 수영하고 오염시키 고 과학 실험을 했죠. 그럼 이제

더 깊은 곳으로 잠수해 봅시다. 익숙한 연안 해역을 지나 깊고 먼

바다로 나가면 대륙붕의 가장자리에 도달하고 거기서 심해로 내려가는

대륙사면을 만나게 됩니다. 단 몇 미터 잠수할 때마다 빛은

급격하게 줄어듭니다. 따라서 해 초가 더 이상 존재하지 않으며 가

파른 대륙사면은 달 표면처럼 보이기 시작합니다.

주변을 보면 시야가 닿는 곳에는 끝없는 물 뿐입니다. 대륙사면을

벗어나 약광층이라 불리는 심해 로 가는 통로로 들어가 봅시다.

더 깊이 내려갈수록 수압이 치명적인 수준으로 상승합니다.

가장 깊은 스쿠버다이빙이 332미터 였습니다.

그 깊이의 수압은 200개의 차를 몸 위에 올린 정도입니다.

3%밖에 안 왔는데도 그 정도입니다. 이 지역은 꽤 암울해 보이지만 많은

어류와 기타 동물이 일생의 반 이상을 여기서 보냅니다. 이 드넓고 어두운

수역은 밝은 낮에 포식자를 피해 쉬고 회복하기 좋은 곳입니다.

밤이 되면 안전하게 더 얕은 곳으로 나가 먹이가 풍부한 연안에서 식사

를 하죠. 이 암흑과 미약한 빛 사이에 존재하는

구역에서 빛은 강력한 도구가 됩니다. 이 깊은 환경에 사는 90% 이상의

종이 생물발광 화학물질로 빛을 만듭니다.

아주 미약한 햇빛에 대한 위장술 로 이용되기도 하고 짝짓기 상대

에 신호를 보내거나 공격자를 교란 하고 겁주는 용도로 쓰이기도 합니다.

아니면 사냥 도구가 되기도 하죠 .

암흑 속에서 살아남는 또 다른 도구 는 팀 플레이입니다. 700미터쯤 되면

관해파리 군체를 만납니다. 너비 는 빗자루 정도밖에 되지 않지만

50미터까지 자랄 수 있습니다. 먹잇감을 유인하기 위해 이 군체

는 비극적일 정도로 아름다운 밝고 푸른 혹은 붉은 빛을 발산합니다.

그리고 접근하는 모든 것을 죽이는 맹독 바늘로 뒤덮인 촉수를 커튼

처럼 펼칩니다. 하지만 이 깊은 곳에 사는 대부분의

생물은 예상 밖의 자원에 의존합니다. 바로 바다눈입니다.

해수면에서 해저로 끝없이 가라앉는 하얀 가루입니다.

이 가루는 죽은 해초나 동물 사체 대변 조개껍데기 모래나 먼지로

구성됩니다. 맛은 없어 보이지만 해저 생물은

이 필수 자원 없이는 살 수가 없습니다. 이 구역은 눈으로 보고도 믿기 힘든

두 종간 전투가 벌어지는 곳이기도 합니다.

향유고래는 집채만 한 대왕오징어 를 사냥합니다. 오징어는 강하게

저항하지만 고래의 상대는 못 됩니다. 하지만 고래의 몸에 지워지지 않는

상처를 남기죠. 1000m에 도달하면 인간이 지은 그

어떤 구조물보다 깊은 것이며 이제 조심해야 합니다.

여기는 무광층입니다. 깜깜하게 어두운 곳이죠.

사람의 손이 거의 닿지 않은 곳으로 검은 물이 끝없이 펼쳐진 텅 빈

황무지입니다. 이 깊이에서 사람이 수영하는 것은 우주에서 걷는 것보다

어렵습니다. 먹을 것을 찾는 것이 굉장히 어렵

기 때문에 이곳의 생명체는 에너지 효율성이 매우 높게 진화했습니다.

30cm 크기의 흡혈오징어는 가만히 물속을 떠다닙니다. 얇고 긴 더듬이

팔을 늘어뜨린 채로요. 이 팔에 촘촘하게 난 빳빳하고 미세한

털이 먹이를 쓸어 담습니다. 먹이를 잡으려 애쓰는 방법보다

에너지를 훨씬 절약하는 방법입니다. 살아있는 먹이가 거의 없기 때문에

육식어류는 먹잇감을 찾기가 훨씬 어렵습니다. 따라서 이들은 첫 공격

에 먹잇감을 제대로 붙들어야 합니다. 아니면 어둠 속으로 도망쳐 버릴

테니까요. 많은 심해 포식자가 길고 치명적인

이빨을 여러 개 갖고 있습니다. 예를 들어 바이퍼피시는 긴 송곳니

를 이용해 큰 먹잇감도 꼼짝 못 하도록 붙들어 통째로 삼킬 수 있습니다.

그런가 하면 주름상어는 뒤로 휘어진 300개의 인상적인 이빨로 먹잇감

을 꿰어 사냥합니다. 더 내려가 봅시다. 3800m를 지나면

타이타닉호의 무덤이 보입니다. 이제 심해입니다.

이곳의 삶은 슬로우모션입니다. 최후 한 줌의 에너지까지 아끼는

것이 생존에 필수적입니다. 모두 여기서는 움직임 없이 떠다니

거나 느리고 우아하게 헤엄칩니다. 빠르게 움직일 때는 위험에서 도망

갈 때뿐입니다. 덤보 문어는 귀 같이 생긴 지느러

미로 헤엄치고 민태류는 장어 꼬리 같은 꼬리로 움직입니다.

4000m에서 우리는 드디어 땅을 다시 만납니다. 바로 심해 평원입니다.

회색의 진흙과 바위 위에 바다눈이 뒤덮인 곳으로 이 바다눈을 해삼

새우 성게와 바다 벌레가 먹고 삽니다. 이 해저의 어떤 곳에는 작고 어두운

미네랄 침전물이 발견되기도 합니다. 이들은 망간 단괴입니다.

심해 산호와 스펀지는 이 망간 단 괴를 이용해 해저에 붙어 있습니다.

심해저에는 생명체가 거의 없지만 여기도 오아시스는 존재합니다.

지각판이 갈라지는 열곡에서 마그 마가 해수를 가열하여 섭씨 400도

에 달하는 짙은 물과 미네랄을 뿜 고 이에 의해 정교한 굴뚝과 탑

이 만들어집니다. 극한성 박테리아는 이 미네랄을

통해 유기 물질을 만들고 이 물질 은 독특한 이곳 생태계의 기반을

이룹니다. 더 내려가 6000m에 이르면 심해 평

원의 가장 깊은 곳에 도착합니다. 대부분의 해저는 여기까지가 끝

입니다. 하지만 바다에서 가장 깊은 곳에 비하면 여기는 그 반밖에 되지

않습니다. 초심해대로 들어가 봅시다. 바다의

지하세계입니다. 바다의 단 0.25%에 해당하는 길고

좁은 해구로 지구상 가장 극한의 환경입니다.

여기에는 극한성 생물만 존재합니다. 천상 꼼치라고 불리는 어류는 8000

미터쯤에서 발견되며 가장 깊은 곳에서 사는 어류라는 기록을 갖고

있습니다. 뾰족하고 날카로운 검은 바위들이

10000미터 이하로 내려가면서 옆 을 스쳐 지나갑니다. 그리고 마지막

경사면에 도착합니다. 마리아나 해구라는 큰 해구 안의

해구로 1.6킬로미터 너비의 협곡 을 완만한 경사면이 감싸고 있는

형태입니다. 여기가 끝입니다. 가장 깊은 곳입니다.

바로 챌린저 해연입니다. 해수면 에서 11000미터 깊이이죠.

이곳의 수압은 1086바입니다. 여기서 헤엄치는 것은 1800마리의 코끼리

를 머리 위에 올리고 균형을 잡는 것과 비슷합니다.

하지만 여기조차도 생명은 방법을 찾아 번성하고 있습니다. 해삼이

있고 그 옆에는 분홍색의 가벼운 단각류들이 헤엄치고 있습니다.

크기가 놀라운 녀석들이죠. 연안의 사촌들은 기껏해야 몇 센티미터

지만 이 심해 버전은 30cm까지 자 랍니다. 그리고 우아하게 물속을

떠다니는 다른 것들도 있습니다. 2018년에 과학자가 발견한 비닐봉지

입니다. 지구에서 가장 외딴곳도 인간의 영향에서 벗어나지 못했습니다.

이제 더 이상 할 것도 없고 산소 도 다 떨어져 가니 다시 올라갑

시다.

캄캄하고 공허한 바다를 몇 시간 지나면 드디어 희미한 빛이 보이고

잔잔한 수면에 도착합니다. 바다는 너무나 깊습니다. 그리고
