むかし むかし 、 佐渡 島 ( さ ど が しま ) の 海辺 に 、 ネコ 好き の おばあ さん が いました 。 若い 頃 から 一人 暮らし です が 、いつも 十 数匹 の ネコ を 飼って い ます 。 ところが 年 を 取る に つれて 貯金 も なくなり 、その 日 の 食べる 物 に さえ も 不自由 する ように なり ました 。 その 為 に 、たくさん 飼って いた ネコ たち も 次々 と 逃げ 出して 、ついに は 古くから いた 三毛 ネコ 一匹 しか 残り ません でした 。 おばあさん は この 三毛 ネコ を 今まで 以上 に 可愛がり 、自分 が 食べない 日 は あっても 、ネコ の 食べ物 だけ は 毎日 用意 し ました 。 しかし 、いつしか その 食べ物 に も 困る ように なった ので 、ある 日 おばあさん は ネコ に 言い ました 。 「 ごらん の 通り の 貧乏 暮らし で 、 お前 に エサ を やれ ん よう に なって しまった 。 だからといって 家出 を したり 、よそ の 家 に 行って 食べ物 を 欲しがったり し ない で おくれ 。 お前 は 、わたし の たった 一 つ の 生きがい な のだ から 」ところが 次の 日 、その ネコ も 姿 を 消して しまい ました 。 (ああ 、何て 事 だろう 。 あれほど 可愛がって いた ネコ に 見捨てられる なんて 。 貧乏 する と 人 ばかり か 、ネコ に まで 嫌わ れて しまう の か )おばあさん は 、思わず 涙 を こぼし ました 。 誰 も いない 家 の 中 で ボンヤリ と 座って いたら 、突然 、美しい 娘 が 訪ねて 来て 言い ました 。 「 おばあ さん 、 わたし は おばあ さん に 可愛がって もらった 三 毛 ネコ です 。 今 まで 、何の お 役 に も 立ちません でした が 、どうぞ 恩返し を させて 下さい 」と 、言う で は ありません か 。 おばあさん は ビックリ して 娘 を 見ました が 、どこ から 見て も 人間 の 姿 で 、とても ネコ が 化けている とは 思えません 。 「お前 、そんな 姿 に なって 、何 を しよう と いう の かい ？ わたし の 事 なら 心配 し なくて も 大丈夫だ から ね 」「いいえ 、このまま で は おばあさん が 可愛そうです 。 何でも 、 江戸 ( え ど ) の 方 から 芸者 ( げいしゃ ) に なる 娘 を 探し に 来て いる と いう 噂 を 聞きました 。 どうか 、江戸 の 男 に わたし を 見せて 下さい 。 きっと 、 たくさんの お 金 で 買って くれる でしょう 」 娘 に 化けた ネコ が 、 あまりに も 熱心に 言う ので 、 「 そこ まで 、 わたし の 事 を 心配 して くれる と は ・・・」 と 、 おばあ さん は ネコ の 申し出 を 受ける 事 に しました 。 やがて 、おばあさん の 村 へ 江戸 の 男 が やって来て 、娘 を 見る なり 、「なんて きれいな 娘 だ 。 こりゃ 間違いなく 、江戸 でも 指折り の 芸者 に なれる ぞ 」と 、言って 、おばあさん に たくさんの 金 を 渡して 、娘 を 江戸 へ 連れて 行きました 。

それ から 何 ヶ月 か あと 、 江戸 の 深川 ( ふか がわ ) の 料理 屋 に 、 おけ さ と 名乗る 芸者 が 現れました 。 その あでやかな 美しさ は 、まるで 名人 が 描いた 絵 から 抜け出た ようです 。 しかも 、 おけ さ の 歌う 歌 は 江戸 で は 珍しい もの で 、 人々 から は 『 おけ さ 節 』 と 呼ばれて 、 たちまち 町 中 の 評判 ( ひょうばん ) に なりました 。 そんな おけさ を 一目 見 たい と いう 客 が 増えて 、おけさの いる 料理屋 は 毎晩 大変な 賑わい と なり ました 。

ある 晩 の 事 、 その 料理 屋 へ 船乗り たち を 引き連れた 船頭 ( せんどう ) が やって 来て 、 「 金 なら いくら でも 出す から 、 おけ さ を 呼んで くれ 」 と 、 言う の です 。 「お呼び いただいて 、ありがとう ございます 」おけ さ が 部屋 に 行く と 、部屋 は たちまち 花 が 咲いた 様 に 華やかに なり 、とても 賑やかな 酒盛り が 始まりました 。 やがて 三味線 ( しゃみせん ) が 鳴り 、 おけ さ の 歌う 「 おけ さ 節 」 が 流れます 。 「よ よっ、いいぞ、いいぞ」おけさ節に合わせて船乗りたちが踊り、踊っているうちに酒の酔いが回って、一人、また一人と酔い潰れ、酒盛りが終わった時には、みんな大の字になっていました。 飲み 過ぎた 船頭 は 、はうように して 隣 の 部屋 へ 行き 、布団 の 中 へ 潜り込みました 。
