雪 婆 ん ご は 、遠く へ 出かけて 居り ました 。 猫 の ような 耳 を もち 、 ぼやぼや した 灰 いろ の 髪 を した 雪 婆 ん ご は 、 西 の 山脈 の 、 ちぢれた ぎらぎら の 雲 を 越えて 、 遠く へ でかけて いた の です 。 ひとり の 子供 が 、赤い 毛布 に くるまって 、しきりに カリメラ の こと を 考え ながら 、大きな 象 の 頭 の かたち を した 、雪 丘 の 裾 を 、せかせか うち の 方 へ 急いで 居り ました 。 を 尖った かたち に 巻いて 、ふうふう と 吹く と 、炭 から まるで 青 火 が 燃える 。 ぼく は カリメラ 鍋 に 赤 砂糖 を 一つまみ 入れて 、それ から ザラメ を 一つまみ 入れる 。 水 を たして 、 あと は くつ くつ くつ と 煮る ん だ 。 b ほん とうに もう 一生 けん命 、 こども は カリメラ の こと を 考え ながら うち の 方 へ 急いで いました 。 お 日 さま は 、 空 の ず うっと 遠く の すきとおった つめたい とこ で 、 まばゆい 白い 火 を 、 どしどし お 焚 き なさいます 。 その 光 は まっすぐに 四方 に 発射 し 、 下 の 方 に 落ちて 来て は 、 ひっそり した 台地 の 雪 を 、 いちめん まばゆい 雪 花 石膏 の 板 に しました 。 二 疋 の 雪 狼 が 、 べろ べろ まっ赤 な 舌 を 吐き ながら 、 象 の 頭 の かたち を した 、 雪 丘 の 上 の 方 を あるいて いました 。 こい つら は 人 の 眼 に は 見え ない のです が 、一ぺん 風 に 狂い出す と 、台地 の はずれ の 雪 の 上 から 、すぐ ぼやぼや の 雪雲 を ふんで 、空 を かけまわり も する のです 。 「しゅ 、あんまり 行って いけ ない ったら 。」 雪 狼 の うしろ から 白熊 の 毛皮 の 三角 帽子 を あみだ に かぶり 、顔 を 苹果 の ように かがやかし ながら 、雪 童子 が ゆっくり 歩いて 来ました 。 雪 狼 ども は 頭 を ふって くるり と まわり 、また まっ赤 な 舌 を 吐いて 走り ました 。 「カシオピイア 、もう 水仙 が 咲き 出す ぞ おまえ の ガラス の 水車 きっき と まわせ 。」 雪 童子 は まっ 青 な そら を 見あげて 見えない 星 に 叫びました 。 その 空 から は 青 びか り が 波 に なって わくわく と 降り 、 雪 狼 ども は 、 ず うっと 遠く で 焔 の よう に 赤い 舌 を べろ べろ 吐いて います 。 「しゅ 、戻れ ったら 、しゅ 、」雪 童子 が はねあがる ように して 叱り ましたら 、いま まで 雪 に くっきり 落ちて いた 雪 童子 の 影法師 は 、ぎらっと 白い ひかり に 変り 、狼 ども は 耳 を たてて 一 さん に 戻って きました 。 「アンドロメダ 、あぜ みの 花 が もう 咲く ぞ 、おまえ の ラムプ の アルコホル 、しゅう しゅと 噴かせ 。」 雪 童子 は 、風 の ように 象 の 形 の 丘 に のぼり ました 。 雪 に は 風 で 介 殻 の ような かた が つき 、 その 頂 に は 、 一 本 の 大きな 栗 の 木 が 、 美しい 黄金 いろ の やどりぎ の まり を つけて 立って いました 。 「とっと い で 。」 雪 童 子 が 丘 を のぼり ながら 云 います と 、 一 疋 の 雪 狼 は 、 主人 の 小さな 歯 の ちらっと 光る の を 見る や 、 ご む まり の よう に いきなり 木 に はねあがって 、 その 赤い 実 の ついた 小さな 枝 を 、 がちがち 噛 じ りました 。 木 の 上 で しきりに 頸 を まげて いる 雪 狼 の 影法師 は 、大きく 長く 丘 の 雪 に 落ち 、枝 は とうとう 青い 皮 と 、黄いろ の 心 と を ちぎられ て 、いま の ぼって きた ばかりの 雪 童子 の 足もと に 落ちました 。 「 ありがとう 。」 雪 童 子 は それ を ひろい ながら 、 白 と 藍 いろ の 野 はら に たって いる 、 美しい 町 を はるかに ながめました 。 川 が きらきら 光って 、停車場 から は 白い 煙 も あがって い ました 。 雪 童子 は 眼 を 丘 の ふもと に 落し ました 。 その 山裾 の 細い 雪 みち を 、さっき の 赤 毛布 を 着た 子供 が 、一しんに 山 の うち の 方 へ 急いで いる のでした 。 「あいつ は 昨日 、木炭 の そり を 押して 行った 。 砂糖 を 買って 、じぶん だけ 帰って きた な 。」 雪 童子 は わらい ながら 、手 に もっていた やどりぎ の 枝 を 、ぷいっと こども に なげつけました 。 枝 は まるで 弾丸 の ように まっすぐに 飛んで 行って 、たしかに 子供 の 目の前 に 落ちました 。 子供 は びっくり して 枝 を ひろって 、きょろきょろ あちこち を 見まわして い ます 。 雪 童子 は わらって 革 むち を 一つ ひゅう と 鳴らし ました 。 する と 、雲 も なく 研き あげられた ような 群青 の 空 から 、まっ白 な 雪 が 、さぎ の 毛 の ように 、いちめんに 落ちてきました 。 それ は 下 の 平原 の 雪 や 、ビール色 の 日光 、茶いろ の ひのき で できあがった 、しずかな 奇麗な 日曜日 を 、一そう 美しく した のです 。 子ども は 、やどりぎ の 枝 を もって 、一生 けん命に あるき だし ました 。 けれども 、その 立派な 雪 が 落ち 切って しまった ころ から 、お日さま は なんだか 空 の 遠くの 方 へ お移りに なって 、そこ の お旅屋 で 、あの まばゆい 白い 火 を 、あたらしく お焚き なされている ようでした 。 そして 西北 の 方 から は 、少し 風 が 吹いて きました 。 もう よほど 、そら も 冷たく なって きた のです 。 東 の 遠く の 海 の 方 で は 、空 の 仕掛け を 外した ような 、ちいさな カタッ という 音 が 聞え 、いつか まっしろな 鏡 に 変って しまった お日さま の 面 を 、なにか ちいさな もの が どんどん よこ切って 行く ようです 。 雪 童子 は 革 むち を わき の 下 に はさみ 、堅く 腕 を 組み 、唇 を 結んで 、その 風 の 吹いて 来る 方 を じっと 見て い ました 。 狼 ども も 、まっすぐに 首 を のばして 、しきりに そっち を 望みました 。 風 は だんだん 強く なり 、 足 もと の 雪 は 、 さらさら さらさら うしろ へ 流れ 、 間もなく 向 う の 山脈 の 頂 に 、 ぱっと 白い けむり の ような もの が 立った と おもう と 、 もう 西 の 方 は 、 すっかり 灰 いろ に 暗く なりました 。 雪 童子 の 眼 は 、鋭く 燃える ように 光り ました 。 そら は すっかり 白く なり 、風 は まるで 引き裂く よう 、早くも 乾いた こまかな 雪 が やって 来ました 。 そこら は まるで 灰 いろ の 雪 で いっぱいです 。 雪 だ か 雲 だ か も わからない のです 。 丘 の 稜 は 、もう あっち も こっち も 、みんな 一度に 、軋る ように 切る ように 鳴り出し ました 。 地平 線 も 町 も 、 みんな 暗い 烟 の 向 う に なって しまい 、 雪 童 子 の 白い 影 ばかり 、 ぼんやり まっすぐに 立って います 。 その 裂く ような 吼える ような 風 の 音 の 中 から 、「ひゅう 、なに を ぐずぐず している の 。 さあ 降ら す んだ よ 。 降ら すんだ よ 。 ひ ゅう ひ ゅう ひ ゅう 、 ひ ゅひ ゅう 、 降ら す ん だ よ 、 飛ばす ん だ よ 、 なに を ぐずぐず して いる の 。 こんなに 急がしい のに さ 。 ひゅう 、ひゅう 、向う から さえ わざと 三 人 連れて きた じゃないか 。 さあ 、降らす んだ よ 。 ひ ゅう 。」 あやしい 声 が きこえて きました 。 雪 童子 は まるで 電気 に かかった ように 飛び たち ました 。 雪 婆 ん ご が やってきた のです 。 ぱちっ 、雪 童子 の 革 むち が 鳴り ました 。 狼 ども は 一ぺん に はねあがり ました 。 雪 わらす は 顔 いろ も 青ざめ 、唇 も 結ばれ 、帽子 も 飛んで しまい ました 。 「ひゅう 、ひゅう 、さあ しっかり やる んだ よ 。 なまけちゃ いけない よ 。 ひゅう 、ひゅう 。 さあ しっかり やって お 呉れ 。 今日 は ここ ら は 水仙 月 の 四日 だ よ 。 さあ しっかり さ 。 ひ ゅう 。」 雪 婆 ん ごの 、ぼやぼや つめたい 白髪 は 、雪 と 風 と の なか で 渦 に なりました 。 どんどん かける 黒 雲 の 間 から 、その 尖った 耳 と 、ぎらぎら 光る 黄金 の 眼 も 見えます 。 西 の 方 の 野原 から 連れて 来られた 三人 の 雪童子 も 、みんな 顔いろ に 血の気 も なく 、きちっと 唇 を 噛んで 、お互 挨拶 さえ も 交わさず に 、もう つづけざま せわしく 革 むち を 鳴らし 行ったり 来たり し ました 。 もう どこ が 丘 だ か 雪けむり だ か 空 だ か さえ も わから なかった のです 。 聞える もの は 雪 婆 ん ごの あちこち 行ったり 来たり して 叫ぶ 声 、お互 の 革 鞭 の 音 、それから いま は 雪 の 中 を かけ あるく 九 疋 の 雪 狼 ども の 息 の 音 ばかり 、その なか から 雪 童子 は ふと 、風 に けさ れて 泣いて いる さっき の 子供 の 声 を ききました 。 雪 童子 の 瞳 は ちょっと おかしく 燃え ました 。 しばらく たちどまって 考えて い ました が いきなり 烈しく 鞭 を ふって そっち へ 走った のです 。 けれども それ は 方角 が ちがって いた らしく 雪 童子 はず うっと 南 の 方 の 黒い 松山 に ぶっ つかり ました 。 雪 童子 は 革 むち を わき に はさんで 耳 を すまし ました 。 「ひゅう 、ひゅう 、なまけちゃ 承知 し ない よ 。 降ら す ん だ よ 、 降ら す ん だ よ 。 さあ 、ひゅう 。 今日 は 水仙 月 の 四 日 だ よ 。 ひ ゅう 、 ひ ゅう 、 ひ ゅう 、 ひ ゅう ひ ゅう 。」 そんな はげしい 風 や 雪 の 声 の 間 から すきとおる ような 泣声 が ちらっと また 聞えて きました 。 雪 童子 は まっすぐに そっち へ かけて 行きました 。 雪 婆 ん ご の ふりみだした 髪 が 、その 顔 に 気 みわるく さわり ました 。 峠 の 雪 の 中 に 、赤い 毛布 を かぶった さっき の 子 が 、風 に かこまれて 、もう 足 を 雪 から 抜けなく なって よ ろよろ 倒れ 、雪 に 手 を ついて 、起きあがろう と して 泣いて いた のです 。 「毛布 を かぶって 、うつ 向け に なって おいで 。 毛布 を かぶって 、うつむけ に なって おいで 。 ひ ゅう 。」 雪 童子 は 走り ながら 叫び ました 。 けれども それ は 子ども に は ただ 風 の 声 と きこえ 、その かたち は 眼 に 見え なかった のです 。 「うつむけ に 倒れて おいで 。 ひ ゅう 。 動いちゃ いけない 。 じき やむ から けっと を かぶって 倒れ ておいで 。」 雪 わらす は かけ 戻り ながら 又 叫び ました 。 子ども は やっぱり 起きあがろう と して もがいて い ました 。 「倒れ ておいで 、ひゅう 、だまって うつむけ に 倒れて おいで 、今日 は そんなに 寒く ない んだ から 凍え やしない 。」 雪 童子 は 、も 一 ど 走り 抜け ながら 叫び ました 。 子ども は 口 を びくびく まげて 泣き ながら また 起きあがろう と し ました 。 「倒れて いる んだ よ 。 だめ だ ねえ 。」 雪 童子 は 向う から わざと ひどく つきあたって 子ども を 倒し ました 。 「ひゅう 、もっと しっかり やって おくれ 、なまけちゃ いけない 。 さあ 、ひゅう 」雪 婆 ん ご が やってきました 。 その 裂けた ように 紫 な 口 も 尖った 歯 も ぼんやり 見え ました 。 「おや 、おかしな 子 が いる ね 、そう そう 、こっち へ とって おしまい 。 水仙 月 の 四日 だ もの 、一人 や 二人 とった って いい んだ よ 。」 「ええ 、そう です 。 さあ 、死んで しまえ 。」 雪 童子 は わざと ひどく ぶっ つかり ながら また そっと 云い ました 。 「倒れて いる んだ よ 。 動いちゃ いけない 。 動いちゃ いけない ったら 。」 狼 ども が 気ちがい の ように かけめぐり 、黒い 足 は 雪雲 の 間 から ちらちら し ました 。 「そう そう 、それ で いい よ 。 さあ 、降ら し ておくれ 。 なまけちゃ 承知 し ない よ 。 ひ ゅう ひ ゅう ひ ゅう 、 ひ ゅひ ゅう 。」 雪 婆 ん ご は 、また 向う へ 飛んで 行きました 。 子供 は また 起きあがろう と し ました 。 雪 童子 は 笑い ながら 、も 一 度 ひどく つきあたり ました 。 もう そのころ は 、ぼんやり 暗く なって 、まだ 三時 に も ならない に 、日 が 暮れる ように 思われた のです 。 こども は 力 も つきて 、もう 起きあがろう と し ませ ん でした 。 雪 童子 は 笑い ながら 、手 を のばして 、その 赤い 毛布 を 上 から すっかり かけて やりました 。 「そうして 睡って おいで 。 布団 を たくさん かけて あげる から 。 そう すれば 凍え ない んだ よ 。 あした の 朝 まで ="BLACK_CIRCLE"カリメラ の 夢 を 見て おいで 。」 雪 わらす は 同じ とこ を 何べん も かけて 、雪 を たくさん こども の 上 に かぶせました 。 まもなく 赤い 毛布 も 見え なく なり 、あたり と の 高さ も 同じに なって しまい ました 。 「あのこ ども は 、ぼく の やった やどりぎ を もって いた 。」 雪 童子 は つぶやいて 、ちょっと 泣く ように し ました 。 「さあ 、しっかり 、今日 は 夜 の 二時 まで やすみ なし だよ 。 ここ ら は 水仙 月 の 四日 な んだ から 、やすんじゃ いけない 。 さあ 、降ら し ておくれ 。 ひ ゅう 、 ひ ゅう ひ ゅう 、 ひ ゅひ ゅう 。」 雪 婆 ん ご は また 遠く の 風 の 中 で 叫び ました 。 そして 、風 と 雪 と 、ぼさぼさ の 灰 の ような 雲 の なか で 、ほんとうに 日 は 暮れ 雪 は 夜 じゅう 降って 降って 降った のです 。 やっと 夜明け に 近い ころ 、雪 婆んご は も 一度 、南 から 北 へ まっすぐに 馳せ ながら 云い ました 。 「さあ 、もう そろそろ やすんで い い よ 。 あたし は これ から また 海 の 方 へ 行く から ね 、だれ も ついて 来ないで いい よ 。 ゆっくり やすんで この 次の 仕度 を して 置い ておくれ 。 ああ まあい いあん ばい だった 。 水仙 月 の 四日 が うまく 済んで 。」 その 眼 は 闇 の なか で おかしく 青く 光り 、ばさばさ の 髪 を 渦巻かせ 口 を びくびく し ながら 、東 の 方 へ かけて 行きました 。 野 はら も 丘 も ほっと した よう に なって 、 雪 は 青じろく ひかりました 。 空 も いつか すっかり 霽れ て 、桔梗 いろ の 天球 に は 、いちめんの 星座 が またたきました 。 雪 童 子 ら は 、 めいめい 自分 の 狼 を つれて 、 はじめて お 互 挨拶 しました 。 「ずいぶん ひどかった ね 。」 「ああ 、」「こんど は いつ 会う だろう 。」 「いつ だろう ねえ 、しかし 今年 中 に 、もう 二 へん ぐらい の もん だろう 。」 「早く いっしょに 北 へ 帰り たい ね 。」 「 ああ 。」 「さっき こども が ひと り 死んだ な 。」 「大丈夫 だ よ 。 眠って る んだ 。 あした あす こ へ ぼく しるし を つけて おく から 。」 「ああ 、もう 帰ろう 。 夜明け まで に 向う へ 行か なくちゃ 。」 「まあ いい だろう 。 ぼく ね 、どうしても わから ない 。 あいつ は カシオペーア の 三 つ 星 だろう 。 みんな 青い 火 な んだろう 。 それ なのに 、どうして 火 が よく 燃えれば 、雪 を よこす んだろう 。」 「それ は ね 、電気 菓子 と おなじ だ よ 。 そら 、ぐる ぐるぐる まわって いる だろう 。 ザラメ が みんな 、ふわふわ の お 菓子 に なる ねえ 、だから 火 が よく 燃えれば いい んだ よ 。」 「 ああ 。」 「じゃ 、さよなら 。」 「 さよなら 。」 三 人 の 雪 童子 は 、九 疋 の 雪 狼 を つれて 、西 の 方 へ 帰って 行きました 。 まもなく 東 の そら が 黄ばら の ように 光り 、琥珀いろ に かがやき 、黄金 に 燃えだし ました 。 丘 も 野原 も あたらしい 雪 で いっぱいです 。 雪 狼 ども は つかれて ぐったり 座って い ます 。 雪 童子 も 雪 に 座って わらい ました 。 その 頬 は 林檎 の よう 、その 息 は 百合 の ように かおり ました 。 ギラギラ の お 日さま が お登り に なり ました 。 今朝 は 青 味 が かって 一そう 立派です 。 日光 は 桃 いろ に いっぱいに 流れました 。 雪 狼 は 起きあがって 大きく 口 を あき 、 その 口 から は 青い 焔 が ゆらゆら と 燃えました 。 「さあ 、おまえ たち は ぼく に ついて おいで 。 夜 が あけた から 、あの 子ども を 起さ なけ あ いけない 。」 雪 童子 は 走って 、あの 昨日 の 子供 の 埋まっている とこ へ 行きました 。 「さあ 、ここ ら の 雪 を ちらし て おくれ 。」 雪 狼 ども は 、たちまち 後足 で 、そこら の 雪 を けたてました 。 風 が それ を けむり の ように 飛ばし ました 。 かんじき を はき 毛皮 を 着た 人 が 、村 の 方 から 急いで やってきました 。 「もう いい よ 。」 雪 童子 は 子供 の 赤い 毛布 の はじ が 、ちらっと 雪 から 出た の を みて 叫びました 。 「お 父さん が 来た よ 。 もう 眼 を おさまし 。」 雪 わらす は うしろ の 丘 に かけあがって 一 本 の 雪けむり を たて ながら 叫び ました 。 子ども は ちらっと うごいた ようでした 。 そして 毛皮 の 人 は 一 生け ん 命 走って きました 。
