#99 – 4 scrittori italiani del XX secolo

Una delle prime cose che facciamo quando arriviamo a un livello abbastanza avanzato di una lingua straniera è provare a leggere qualcosa in lingua originale.

È un istinto naturale, comprensibilissimo. Io stesso l'ho avuto e lo ho ancora per le lingue che ho imparato e che continuo a studiare.

La cosa più difficile a quel punto è fare una scelta sensata. Entrare in una libreria in un Paese di cui stiamo imparando la lingua è come entrare in un negozio di caramelle. Tutte bellissime, tutte colorate e tutte molto invitanti. Ma è un po' difficile sapere davvero che sapore avranno.

Per questo, come so dai miei studenti, di fronte a scaffali e scaffali di libri in italiano non è facile sapere bene cosa scegliere. Si può rischiare di trovarsi davanti agli occhi un mattone pesantissimo e illeggibile, oppure un libro noioso, banale, di quelli che al massimo possono servire a riequilibrare un tavolo con una gamba più corta delle altre.

Perché la verità è questa, inutile nascondersi dietro a un dito. I libri, come categoria universale, non significano niente di per sé. Ci sono libri belli e libri brutti, libri che fanno sbadigliare e libri che ci tengono incollati alle pagine, libri che sono buoni per passare un pomeriggio in spiaggia e che il giorno dopo dimenticheremo e libri che diventano una parte integrante della nostra vita.

E naturalmente ci sono i libri che diventano i simboli di una comunità. Che costruiscono un'identità.

Perché le persone che li hanno scritti hanno saputo lasciare una traccia importante.

Ogni cultura ha autori e autrici del genere. Nell'episodio 83 ti ho parlato di cinque scrittrici italiane del XX secolo. Questa volta invece diamo spazio agli scrittori.

Ho scelto quattro autori, e in particolare quattro libri, che in Italia sono molto famosi e apprezzati, ma all'estero mi sembra che siano poco conosciuti. Meno di altri, almeno.

E questi scrittori sono importanti. Per quello che hanno scritto, per come l'hanno scritto e per come hanno vissuto. Spero che ti piacciano quanto piacciono a me.

Per conoscerli, parlarne e magari anche leggerli in lingua originale. Partiamo!

Il primo scrittore di cui ti voglio parlare si chiama Beppe Fenoglio. Nato nelle Langhe, una zona del Piemonte famosa per i suoi boschi, per i suoi vini, per il tartufo e anche… per la resistenza partigiana.

Proprio in queste zone infatti, verso la fine della seconda guerra mondiale, erano attivi diversi gruppi di partigiani che combattevano contro gli invasori nazisti e i loro alleati fascisti.

La Resistenza partigiana è uno dei simboli di cui l'Italia oggi è più fiera perché è stata la risposta d'orgoglio dopo venti anni bui di dittatura. Beppe Fenoglio, che nel 1943 era un ragazzo di 21 anni, partecipò alla Resistenza in prima linea. E siccome da studente era stato un amante della lingua inglese, tra i partigiani era diventato responsabile delle comunicazioni tra la Resistenza e le truppe alleate angloamericane.

Finita la guerra, Fenoglio trovò un lavoro ad Alba, la sua città, come impiegato in un'azienda vinicola. Ma nel frattempo, coltivava il suo sogno nel cassetto. Quello di diventare uno scrittore.

Di talento ne aveva da vendere, e anche di storie da raccontare. Scrisse i primi racconti, poi anche dei romanzi diventando uno scrittore affermato. Morì giovane, a soli 40 anni, a causa di un cancro ai polmoni incurabile per le conoscenze mediche dell'epoca.

Il suo romanzo più famoso uscì postumo, e ancora oggi è un libro appassionante e apprezzato. Si intitola Il partigiano Johnny.

È un libro autobiografico. La storia di un giovane nell'Italia degli anni '40 che a un certo punto decide di aderire alla Resistenza. È un giovane di sinistra, laico e fortemente antifascista, e un grande appassionato di letteratura inglese. Per questo tutti lo chiamano Johnny.

Il grande pregio di questo libro è la capacità con cui ha raccontato la grande epica della Resistenza. Allo stesso tempo, non è un libro celebrativo o edulcorato. Racconta i partigiani con sincerità, uomini e donne con i loro pregi e i loro difetti, alcuni più intelligenti e altri meno, alcuni più realisti e altri accecati dall'ideologia. Ma in fondo si trovano tutti dalla stessa parte, a lottare per un'Italia più libera e più giusta dopo la fine del fascismo.

Con il secondo autore, andiamo dal Piemonte giù fino in Sicilia e in particolare a Racalmuto, un paesino sonnacchioso in provincia di Agrigento. È qui che, nel 1921, è nato uno dei più grandi scrittori siciliani di sempre: Leonardo Sciascia.

Sciascia è stato sempre molto impegnato in politica. Non ha mai nascosto di avere idee di sinistra sia sui temi sociali che su quelli economici e per anni è stato iscritto al Partito Comunista Italiano anche se poi lo ha lasciato.

Tuttavia, è stato sempre molto coerente nel suo ruolo di intellettuale attento al fenomeno della mafia.

Sciascia è morto nel 1989, tre anni prima del terribile 1992, l'anno delle stragi di mafia. Non ha potuto vedere gli attentati sanguinosi in cui sono morti i giudici Falcone e Borsellino, eppure le minacce della mafia le aveva viste prima di molti altri e aveva cercato di parlarne apertamente all'Italia. Ma, come si dice, non c'è peggior sordo di chi non vuol sentire…

Il suo romanzo più famoso è uscito nel 1960, si intitola Il giorno della civetta ed è il primo romanzo italiano in cui si parla abbastanza apertamente di mafia.

Racconta la storia di un omicidio avvenuto in una cittadina siciliana. Un omicidio di cui apparentemente nessuno sa nulla, eppure sembra che tutti sappiano tutto. Il poliziotto che indaga è il capitano Bellodi, originario di Parma e poco avvezzo al modo di fare dei siciliani e al concetto dell'omertà. Bellodi si accorge presto che l'omicidio non è casuale, ma ha un significato profondo. Ce la mette tutta per mandare in prigione il vero assassino, ma alla fine ha le mani legate. La mafia non solo esiste, ma è protetta dal potere politico. Un'unione impossibile da combattere. O quasi.

Torniamo al nord, e in particolare a Milano, anche se l'autore in questione è nato a Grosseto, in Toscana, e con la metropoli lombarda ha avuto un rapporto sempre controverso.

Sto parlando di Luciano Bianciardi, diventato un caso più unico che raro di classico anti-classico.

Nel senso che oggi Bianciardi non appare nei libri di letteratura italiana, non è presente nelle antologie e per molto tempo non è stato amato dalla critica. Al contempo, però, è diventato un autore di culto, letto da decine di migliaia di persone e amato a tutti i livelli.

Per capire la misura di quello che sto dicendo, dovete sapere che in Italia esiste una collana di libri molto eleganti che si chiamano I Meridiani. Si tratta di edizioni molto belle, stampate su carta finissima. E nei Meridiani si pubblicano gli scrittori ritenuti dei classici senza tempo.

Bianciardi, in vita, non avrebbe mai potuto ambire a questo onore. Per questo, in omaggio alla sua personalità ribelle, post-mortem le sue opere sono state raccolte in un libro chiamato L'antimeridiano.

Ma perché era così controverso il nostro Bianciardi?

Perché, con un sarcasmo feroce e geniale, ha criticato l'Italia del boom economico, l'industria culturale, la città di Milano. In pratica tutto quello che gli ha permesso di vivere bene e di avere tranquillità e successo.

Può sembrare ipocrita parlare male di qualcosa che ci è stato utile, ma in realtà per Bianciardi non lo è. Lo mostra in particolare nel suo romanzo più famoso, La vita agra.

Il libro racconta la storia di un giovane intellettuale toscano, convinto anarchico, che arriva a Milano con un obiettivo di vendetta. Tempo prima, in una miniera vicina alla sua città, sono morte 47 persone in un grave incidente. Non un incidente fortuito, ma causato dall'azienda che dirigeva i lavori e che ha deciso di risparmiare sulla sicurezza. Quell'azienda ha sede a Milano, e il nostro protagonista parte con l'intento di raggiungere la città e fare saltare in aria la sede dell'azienda con una bomba.

Una volta arrivato a Milano, però, quella città che disprezza fino al midollo, lentamente si abitua, entra nel suo ritmo, la accetta. Dimentica i suoi obiettivi di vendetta, anzi trova una nuova normalità, un nuovo amore e anche un lavoro, che però lo divora da dentro come un parassita. Perché a Milano l'imperativo è lavorare, produrre, essere efficienti sempre. E lui, che era partito dalla Toscana per combattere contro i miti di quell'efficienza, alla fine ci si ritrova dentro fino al collo, incapace di uscire.

Forse non ti servono tante parole per capire perché questo libro è così popolare. Molte persone oggi lo leggono e si immedesimano nel protagonista. Una cosa affascinante, ma che fa anche molta paura. Eppure, a questo serve la letteratura, no?

Spostiamoci in Emilia adesso. Partendo da Correggio, una cittadina di provincia di Reggio piccola e tranquilla, patria di un famoso pittore rinascimentale che porta il nome della città, ma anche di uno dei più importanti scrittori italiani degli ultimi decenni. Pier Vittorio Tondelli.

Tondelli è nato e cresciuto in provincia, in una famiglia religiosa e perbenista. Forse era previsto che diventasse un avvocato, un ragioniere o magari un medico. La verità è che aveva uno spirito ribelle e un grande talento per la scrittura che lo hanno portato completamente da un'altra parte.

Da Correggio, a 18 anni, si è trasferito a Bologna per studiare. Era la Bologna degli anni '70, una città piena di energia rivoluzionaria, di musica, di sesso, di droghe. Il suo primo libro Tondelli lo dedica proprio a questo mondo, si chiama Altri libertini e scandalizza tutta Italia per la brutalità, il lessico, le scene di sesso omosessuale, di prostituzione, di uso di eroina. È uno schiaffo in faccia all'Italia borghese, e l'autore deve addirittura difendersi in tribunale. Per fortuna, sua e nostra, viene assolto.

Il libro più bello di Tondelli però non è questo, che è il primo, ma il suo ultimo. Camere separate. Scritto nel 1989, due anni prima della sua morte prematura.

Anche questo, come il suo precedente, è un romanzo ispirato alla sua esperienza. Solo che Altri libertini era un libro sulla giovinezza, mentre Camere separate è un grande libro sulla maturità. Il protagonista è Leo, un uomo che racconta in prima persona il dolore per la morte del suo compagno, Thomas, morto a 25 anni per una malattia di cui Tondelli non dice il nome, ma che tra le righe tutti capiscono quale sia.

Negli anni '80 c'era un nemico misterioso che faceva paura a tutti e in particolare alla comunità omosessuale. Era l'AIDS (o AIDS), la malattia causata dal virus dell'HIV che ha causato -e continua a causare ancora- morti premature e dolorose.

Leo, il protagonista di Camere separate, pensa con malinconia alla malattia, al dolore, alle difficoltà che ci sono a vivere con normalità un amore omosessuale, alle città che ha conosciuto e ai sogni che ha avuto. Il risultato è un libro malinconico, ma bellissimo. Scritto da una persona quando aveva circa 30 anni e che parla ancora con grande attualità ai trentenni di oggi.

Quella che hai appena ascoltato, o letto, è una lista molto personale. Sono libri che ho amato e che continuo ad amare. Ogni tanto, se devo fare un regalo a qualcuno e voglio che sia davvero sincero, scelgo uno di questi libri. A meno che la persona in questione non li abbia già letti, naturalmente.

Alle persone che studiano con me, che hanno già iniziato a leggere in italiano e che vogliono leggere qualcosa in più, a volte li consiglio. Certo, non tutti sono libri per tutti.

Alla fin fine, credo, è per questo che leggiamo libri e studiamo lingue straniere. O no?
