Isang araw dumating si Tita Maring.
|||||Aunt Maring
One day, for a visit came my Aunt Maring.
Ang sabi niya: "Ano ba naman Milagring!
||||||Miracle
She said, "What's wrong with you, Milagring?
|||||||||thickened||roughened|||palms|
You keep on scrub-sweep-scouring and scrub-sweep-scouring until your palms have gone roughed and thick-skinned.

It's like sandpaper!
|slowly||||soften||skin||||||||||
So, please take a break and smoothen your skin or Turing may not hold your hand!"
||will hold||||||
My father will not hold my mother's hands? Why?
Bakit? Ano ang papel de liha?
What is sandpaper?
I looked for sandpaper all over the house, but I found only Japanese paper.
||||||Aunt Epang|||||||
I went to Mrs. Epang's store and bought some sandpaper.
Magaspang ito. Mahapdi sa balat.
||painful||
It was coarse. It scratched and stung my skin,
Gasgas ang kahoy sa isang kaskas.

Nisnis (1)|||||
The cloth was torn in a rub.

I couldn't imagine that my mother's hands could be this rough.
Minsan, nilagnat ako at napilitang mahiga.
|I had a fever||||lie down

But how come my mother's touch never did hurt?
|||||||he touched||touched|||
And my skin wasn't scratched.
||felt better|||||
Her touch made me feel so much better.
Mali si Tita Maring.
Aunt Maring was wrong.
My mother's palms were not like sandpaper at all.

|||holding hands|||||
There was a time I saw my mother and father holding hands.
Ang sarap tingnan.
It was a sight to behold.
Mali talaga si Tita Maring.
Aunt Maring was wrong.
My mother's palms are not like sandpaper.
Hindi papel de lihang isis dito, isis doon.
|||lihang (1)||||
Not like sandpaper that scrapes here and there,
Kiskis dito, kiskis doon.
scrathes here and there, rubs here and there.
Kaskas dito, kaskas doon.
Scratch here, scratch there.
|||||stand||||||||||||||||||
But still I can't help asking my mother about Aunt Maring's remark that her palms felt like sandpaper.
|thick||||||||||working|||
"Dear child, my palms are thick and coarse because I'm always working," my mother said.
||softened||rough||||||pillow|||
My Mother's coarse palms made the pillow I slept on so soft.
Ang manok na nilaga.

Pati lumang pandesal lumambot din.
Also||bread roll||
And even day-old crusty bread....
Pumunta ako kay Nanay at humawak sa kamay niya.
|||||held|||
I went to my mother and held her hands.
|||||||let go|
I felt like I did not want to let go....ever.
