Capitolo 5. La giara

Anche quest'anno gli alberi sono pieni di olive, anche se l'inverno è stato brutto.

Zirafa ha tantissimi alberi di olive ed è contento. Ha cinque giare vecchie per tenere l'olio. Probabilmente, pensa, non bastano per tenere il tanto olio di questa stagione. Ha preso una giara nuova a Santo Stefano di Camastra, alta quasi quanto una persona, è più bella e più grande delle altre cinque.

Naturalmente ha litigato anche con la persona che gli ha venduto questa giara. Ma Zirafa, nella sua vita, ha litigato con tutti, anche per cose semplici, piccole. È quasi povero per tutti i soldi pagati per un processo!

Il suo avvocato lo vede due o tre volte a settimana. È stanco di vederlo e gli ha regalato un piccolo libro con tutte le leggi: così può vedere da solo se può fare un processo contro questo o quel signore.

Ora, quando litiga con una persona, ridono e gli dicono:

‒ Prepara l'asino! ‒ perché di solito Zirafa poi parte e va in città dall'avvocato. E lui risponde:

‒ Certo, e sono dolori per voi, figli di un cane!

I contadini di Zirafa iniziano a cogliere le olive. Il terzo giorno due uomini, mentre lavorano, passano vicino alla giara nuova e si fermano a vederla. E così vedono che la nuova bellissima giara presa da Zirafa a Santo Stefano e pagata tanto, quattro soldi, è divisa in due parti: qualcuno l'ha rotta con un coltello.

‒ Guardate! Guardate!

‒ Chi è stato?

‒ Oh, mamma mia! E che fa ora don Lollò?! La giara nuova, che sfortuna!

Uno, per paura, vuole andare via e non dire nulla. Ma l'altro risponde:

‒ Sei matto? Con don Zirafa? In questo modo pensa che abbiamo rotto noi la giara. No, no, tutti fermi, qua.

E comincia a chiamare:

‒ Don Lollò! Ah, don Lollò!

Arriva don Zirafa, nervoso, veloce, sempre impegnato e, naturalmente, sempre arrabbiato. Vede la giara e come prima cosa prende i due contadini e li butta con forza contro il muro:

‒ Ah, adesso la dovete pagare!

Poi lancia il cappello, comincia a camminare velocemente…

‒ Una giara nuova! Quattro soldi! Chi l'ha rotta? Quando? Come?

Quando comincia ad essere un po' più calmo, i contadini gli dicono che può ancora riparare la giara. C'è un signore molto bravo, Zi' Dima Licasi, che ha fatto una sua colla, e quindi, grazie a lui e alla sua colla, la giara può di nuovo essere come nuova.

Prima don Lollò dice di no. Poi però cambia idea e la mattina dopo, all'alba, arriva Zi' Dima Licasi. Ha con lui un sacco con tutti gli attrezzi per sistemare la giara. Zirafa lo guarda a lungo, non è sicuro:

‒ Vediamo questa colla!

Zi' Dima, senza parlare, con le mani fa segno di no. Poi, dopo qualche secondo, dice:

‒ La vede al lavoro, sulla giara.

‒ Puoi fare un buon lavoro?

Zi' Dima mette a terra il sacco con le cose, prende dei vecchi, piccoli occhiali e li mette. E a quel punto, guarda Zirafa e dice, serio:

‒ Certo!

‒ Però solo con la colla non può andare bene. Metti anche del ferro.

‒ Me ne vado, ‒ risponde tranquillo Zi' Dima, mentre prende il sacco con le cose.

Ma don Lollò gli prende un braccio e lo ferma.

‒ Ma dove vai? Ma guarda, chi pensi di essere? Carlo Magno? Brutto pezzo di asino! Io devo mettere l'olio qui dentro! Una rottura così grande, solo con la colla? Voglio anche il ferro. Mastice e ferro, pago io, decido io!

Zi' Dima chiude gli occhi e le labbra, per non parlare. Le parole di Zirafa non gli sono piaciute, ecco un'altra persona che non crede alla sua colla. E anche questa volta non può fare un buon lavoro, pulito. Prova di nuovo:

‒ Se la giara non è come nuova…

‒ Zi' Dima, purtroppo non sei tu che comandi. Metti il ferro!

E Zi' Dima inizia a mettere il ferro nei buchi.

Dopo un'ora di lavoro, Zi' Dima ha finito e…

‒ Ora aiutami ad uscire dalla giara!

Ma la giara è larga al centro e stretta in alto. Zi' Dima, nervoso dopo quello che gli ha detto Zirafa, non ha fatto attenzione. E ora prova e prova ancora, ma non riesce ad uscire dalla giara. E il contadino non lo aiuta, solo ride come un matto!

Ora la giara che lui ha fatto ritornare nuova, deve essere rotta di nuovo, per farlo uscire. Arriva anche don Lollò. All'inizio non crede a quello che vede:

La notte i canti svegliano don Lollò. Va a vedere cosa succede e quando vede il vecchio, dentro la giara, cantare allegro, non riesce più a stare calmo. Corre verso la giara, dà un calcio e la giara va contro una pianta di olive. E si rompe!
