有 一个 小朋友 跟 我 说 他 的 同学 开始 炒鞋 了 A student told me that one of his classmates started “speculating” in sneakers

把 一双 运动鞋 买回来 by buying a pair of sneakers at a normal price

一个月 之内 价格 就 上涨 了 几十倍 which can increase by dozens of times within a month.

他 问 我 说 一双 运动鞋 真的 能值 这么 多钱 吗 "Is a pari of sneakers really worth that much?" He asked.

其实 在 很 短 的 时间 内 In fact, there are only two possible reasons

一个 商品 的 价格上涨 几十倍 if the price of a product rises by several times

只有 两种 可能 的 原因 within a very short period of time.

第一种 是 强烈 的 通货膨胀 One is because of hyperinflation.

第二种 是 经济 泡沫 And the other one is due to economic bubbles.

那么 很 显然 炒鞋 是 属于 后 一种 In the case of the spike in the price of the sneakers, the reason is the latter.

我们 准备 通过 四期 节目 I will introduce to you the bubbles that history has witnessed

来 给 大家 介绍 一下 历史 上 的 经济 泡沫 with four videos.

听 了 这 几期 节目 之后 And hopefully, after watching these four videos,

可能 会 让 大家 在 以后 面对 各种 泡沫 的 时候 you will have a clearer understanding

有 一个 清醒 的 认识 when facing various bubbles in the future.

我们 首先 来说 一下 First of all, let's talk about

人类 历史 上 第一次 经济学 泡沫 the first economic bubble in our history,

这个 叫做 郁金香 狂热 —the tulip mania

说 到 郁金香 大家 会 想到 哪个 国家 呢 What comes to your mind when we mention tulip?

那 很 显然 是 荷兰 对 吧 Netherlands. Right?

因为 荷兰 是 盛产 郁金香 的 This is because Netherlands abounds with tulip

荷兰 的 郁金香 特别 有名 and its tulip is popular all over the world.

但是 荷兰 的 郁金香 也 曾经 让 荷兰人 损失惨重 However, this very tulip has once made the dutch suffer from heavy economic losses.

这 怎么回事 呢 Why is this so?

我们 先 来说 一说

这 是 在 300 年前 发生 的 一件 事儿 The dutch tulip mania

叫做 郁金香 狂热 happened 300 years ago.

那么 先 来说 一说 这个 事件 发生 的 背景 Let's first talk about the circumstances of which this happened.

这个 事件 发生 的 背景 是 什么 呢 It was during the The Netherlands War of Independence

首先 当时 荷兰 和 西班牙 打 独立战争 荷西 战争 between Netherlands and Spain,

后来 这个 荷西 战争 荷兰 胜利 了 in which Netherlands won,

就 保持 了 事实上 的 独立 which thus became an independent nation

也就是说 在政治上 荷兰 它 独立 了 and hence safeguarded its national sovereignty.

政治 独立 之后 自然 要 谋求 经济 利益 对 吧 After independence, of course the dutch would have to seek economic profits,

于是 荷兰 就 开始 发展 航海 业 hence they began to develop sea trade.

把 几个 小 公司 组合 起来 Under this circumstances,

就 组成 了 荷兰东印度公司

荷兰 的 东印度 公司

那么 这个 公司 在历史上 是 很 有名 的 对 吧 was then founded by a government-directed amalgamation of several rival Dutch trading companies.

这个 荷兰东印度公司 这个 赚取 了 很多 的 利润 This company had made a lot of profit

所以 就 非常 的 富有 and became extremely affluent.

因此 荷兰人 在经济上 非常 的 富有 So the dutch was rather wealthy during that period of time.

那么 有 多 富有 呢 It was so wealthy to the extent that

就是 一个 普通 的 手工业者 even an ordinary craftsman

他 一个 人 工作 就 可以 养活 一家 四口 人 could support a whole family of four with only his own wage.

所以 这个 荷兰 其实 是 非常 繁华 的 So we can see how rich this country was.

那么 在 政治 独立 和 经济 繁华 的 基础 上 With political independence and a robust economy，

人们 又 自然 开始 追求 精神 的 愉悦 是 吧 the Dutch started to pursue for a materialistic life

那么 奢侈品 就是 一个 人们 需要 的 东西 and luxuries were what they desired,

尤其 是 贵族 尤其 是 有钱人 especially for the aristocrats and the rich,

他 需要 一些 奢侈品 来 彰显 自己 的 身份 who needed some luxuries to show off their wealth.

那么 这些 奢侈品 是 什么 呢 So what are these luxuries?

当然 有 黄金 珠宝 这些 Of course there were gold and jewellery alike,

不过 还有 一种 东西 就是 郁金香 but there was another thing that they needed — tulip.

郁金香 这个 东西 原产 是 中亚 Tulip originated from the Central Asia,

它 本来 应该 到 不了 西欧 的 which was far from the West Europe.

那 后来 怎么 到 了 西欧 呢 So how did tulip reach the West Europe?

是因为 当时 有 一个 国家 非常 强 This is because Turkey

这个 国家 叫 什么 叫 土耳其 was a very powerful country during that period,

这个 土耳其 它 当时 在 中亚 那边 占 了 不少 土地 which occupied lots of lands

后来 又 打 下来 了 君士坦丁堡 And also Constantinople

1453 君士坦丁堡 沦陷 对 吧 which was conquered and collapsed in 1453.

打下 了 君士坦丁堡 之后 就 跟 西欧 接壤 了 Turkey then had access to Western Europe after the conquest of Constantinople.

所以 这个 土耳其 就 逐渐 的 把 这个 郁金香 Subsequently, Turkey introduced tulip

就 传播 到 了 西欧 Into West Europe,

传播 到 了 西欧 之后 就 到 了 法国 and hence France.

那 法国人 当时 就 以 佩戴 郁金香 为 身份 的 标志 The French deemed wearing tulip as a status symbol.

这个 贵妇 们 出席 各种 宴会 Ladies from the upper class always

都 必须 要 佩戴 一份 郁金香 wore a tulip when they attended banquets.

所以 郁金香 的 价格 就 比较 高 了 As a result,

这个 就是 当时 人们 对于 精神 的 一个 追求 tulips rapidly became a coveted luxury item,

精神 的 需要 and a social fad

在 这样 的 情况 下 among the emerging classes of wealthy merchants,

郁金香 就 成为 富人 的 一种 奢侈品 一种 玩物 driving up their price.

好 那么 这个 东西 But there were many other ways that could be

后来 为什么 变成 全民 热炒 的 一个 东西 呢 and were used to show off,

我们 来讲 一讲 它 的 发生 过程 so why was it the tulip that created such a mania?

郁金香 这种 花 它 有 一个 特点 In order to understand that we must look at the flower's nature,

就是 它 培育 期 比较 长 that is, It took many years to breed.

你 从 种子 开始 种 It takes around

那么 它 需要 大概 种 5 到 7 年 才 能够 开出 花来 five to seven years for a seed to grow into a flower.

当然 你 也 不 一定 非要 从 种子 开始 种 Of course you don't have to grow the flower from its seed,

郁金香 有 一种 球茎 you can make a few clones that the flower blossoms

你 从 这个 球茎 开始 种 And use them as flowering bulbs, which blossoms

一年 之内 它 就 可以 开花 了 in much shorter breeding period of only one year.

不过 开花 也 开 不了 多久 它开 一周 就 谢掉 了 However, tulip only blossoms for a week and then perishes,

同时 因为 这个 郁金香 当时 传到 荷兰 时间 不太长 and because tulip was just introduced to Netherlands,

所以 当时 荷兰 的 郁金香 数量 也 比较 稀少 It was very rare in Netherlands.

数量 少 人们 又 有 需求 培育 时间 长 A scarce supply, a high demand and a long breeding period,

这 就 成为 炒作 的 一个 基础 了 对 吧 these all contributed to the

那么 这个 真正 的 炒作 Dutch tulip bubble,

大概 发生 在 1634 年 开始 which eventually happened 94 00:03:33,400 --> 00:03:34,979 在1634年的时候 in 1634.

在 1634 年 的 时候

这个 荷兰 的 这些 郁金香 的 这些 花农 们 集合 到 一起 In 1634, the tulip farmers from the Netherlands gathered together

说 我们 成立 一个 行业协会 and they decided to

我们 成立 一个 行业协会 以后 就 有 组织 了 对 吧 form a union,

这 协会 可以 管 我们 了 so that this union could then manage the trade of tulips.

那么 加入 这个 协会 是 有 条件 的 however, there is a condition to join this union,

你 私下交易 郁金香 是 不行 的 that is, the farmers were not allowed to trade tulips privately.

你 每 交易 一份 郁金香 For every tulip each farmer traded,

都 要 给 这个 协会 一定 的 佣金 a certain amount of commission is required to be given to the union.

但是 这个 佣金 不太高 But the commission was

又 因为 这个 交易 总在 酒馆 里边 举行 actually not very high.

所以 他们 就 把 这个 佣金 就 叫 酒钱 The trade always

在 酒馆 里边 交易 郁金香 took place in hubs

同时 给 这个 协会 钱 就 叫 酒钱 So when people were

那么 当时 人们 在 酒馆 里边 聚集 gathering in various hubs

一起 交易 郁金香 的 时候 to trade tulips,

有人 就 发现 了 一个 问题 some of them realised that

就是 这个 价格 是 在 波动 的 the price was fluctuating.

那么 如果 我 在 价格低 的 时候 买入 郁金香 They then thought to themselves, “so if I bought tulip when it was at a lower price,

过 一会 价格 高 了 我 再 卖 我 不 就 赚钱 了 嘛 对 不 对 and sold it when the price rises, I could then earn some profits, right?”

于是 有人 发现 了 这 里面 的 商机 After discovering this hidden business opportunity,

就 有人 开始 囤积 郁金香 然后 炒作 speculators began to enter the market and the prices of tulips rose steadily.

所以 这个 最 狂热 的 时间 The peak of this tulip mania

是 发生 在 1636 年 的 时候 was in 1636.

在 1636 年 12 月 这个 时候 到 了 年底 了 On December 1636,

当年 的 郁金香 球茎 All of the tulip clones,

他们 交易 的 主要 是 一种 球茎 which were the main products on the market,

这个 球茎 已经 交易 完 了 没有 了 were all sold out.

但是 很多 人想 那 我 还 需要 买 怎么办 However, what if some people still wanted to buy more tulips?

有人 说 别着急 That's when somebody stepped out and suggested “Don't worry.

明年 不是 还有 吗 there will be more tulips next year

我 从 土 里边 挖出 这个 球茎 来 so I could dig out the clones.”

只是 还 没有 成熟 However, the clones were not mature yet

我 不能 挖 对 不 对 so obviously they couldn't dig them out.

于是 他们 就 发明 了 世界 上 最早 的 什么 呢 期货 To solve this, they then invented the earliest futures contract,

这个 最早 的 期货 其实 就是 用来 交易 郁金香 的 which was for trading tulips.

他们 交易 的 是 1637 年 4 月 交割 的 这个 郁金香 Hence, what they actually traded was the tulip that would only be harvested in April, 1637.

可能 有 同学 对于 期货 念 不 太 了解 Perhaps some of you may not know what is a futures contract,

咱们 简单 来说 一下 什么 叫 期货 so let's now talk about it.

就 比如说 有 两个 人 Imagine there are two people, A and B.

这 两个 人 一个 人 叫 A 他 是 一个 郁金香 的 花农 A is a tulip farmer,

这个 花农 他 地 里边 有 郁金香 的 球茎 and he has planted tulip clones in his farm.

但是 因为 这个 还 没有 到 时间 However, since it is not the time for the clones to mature,

所以 他 拿 不 出来 he can't pull them out.

但是 他 急于 想 把 这个 球茎 卖出去 But at the same time he is also anxious to sell the clones

这样 他 就 可以 赚 到 钱 了 so that he can earn money.

另外 有 一个 人 B And now there is B,

这个 B 他 手里 边 有钱 who has money

他 想 买 郁金香 and wants to buy tulip.

但是 现在 已经 没有 人 可 买 了 But now there is nobody he can buy the tulips from

没有 郁金香 可买 了 and there is no tulips available on sale.

所以 怎么办 呢 So what should they do?

他们 俩 就 琢磨 说 这么 办 吧 They then negotiate with each other and decide that

现在 我们 按照 郁金香 的 价格 they can sign a contract

咱们 写 一份 合同 based on the actual values of the tulip,

到 明年 你 把 郁金香 给 我 就行了 And then A will pass the tulip to B the next year.

比如说 现在 郁金香 的 价格 是 1000 元 For example, now the price of tulip is 1000 dollars,

那么 于是 B 可以 先付 一个 定金 给 A B can then pay a certain amount of deposit to A first,

比如说 B 付 10 块钱 let's say, ten dollars.

付 了 10 块钱 给 A After receiving 10 dollars ,

然后 这个 A 就 写 一份 合同 A will then draft a contract

这个 合同 上 写 着 说 到 了 明年 的 4 月份 Which states that in April next year,

你 可以 以 990 元 的 价格 B can buy the tulip

990 元 的 价格 去 买 我 这个 郁金香 球茎 at 990 dollars.

也就是说 到 了 明年 之后 This also means that in the next year,

你 要是 觉得 这个 郁金香 球茎 不值钱 If B reckons that the tulip is not worth the price,

你 可以 不买 对 吧 B doesn't have to buy the tulip,

你 10 块钱 就 没 了 so B will just lose ten dollars.

那么 如果 你 觉得 这个 990 元值

你 就 再 花 990 B can then spend 990 dollars

这样一来 1000 的 价格 你 就 拿走 了 是 吧 to add up to 1000 dollars

于是 这个 B 就 买 了 这个 郁金香 球茎 了 to buy the tulip.

买 了 之后 他 拿到 了 这份 合同 After paying 10 dollars as deposit,

这份 合同 A 就 给 了 B 了 B will then become the contract holder.

拿到 这份 合同 之后 B 是不是 一定 要 持有 到期 啊 After getting the contract, does B have to keep the contract

说 到期 了 之后 拿 这个 球茎 until it is due?

B 不会 这样 想 的 Of course B will not think this way.

B 会想 那 我 能 不能 把 这个 合同 再 卖出去 呢 B will think, can I sell this contract again?

比如说 有 一天 郁金香 的 价格 涨到 了 2000 元 Let's say one day, the price of tulips has risen to 2,000 dollars.

B 就 会 说 B will say, “

我 没有 必要 等到 合同 到期 去 拿 这个 球茎 了 I don't have to wait until the contract is due to get the tulip,

我 现在 就 能 挣钱 了 I can already earn profits now.

这个 B 就 可以 在 市场 上 公开 叫 Then now B can announce in the market”

说 我 这里 有 一份 合同 I now have contact

这个 合同 上 写 的 我 可以 以 990 元 的 价格 Which states I can buy the tulip

拿到 这个 郁金香 球茎 对 吧 At 990 dollars.”

那么 有 一个 人 C 就 说 了 Then another person C may ask,

C 说 现在 的 价格 是 多少钱 “What is the price now?”

现在 的 价格 是 2000 元 Now the price is 2000 dollars,

你 这份 合同 写 可以 拿 990 元 价格 Since the contract states the tulip is

来 买 这个 郁金香 球茎 Only 990 dollars,

所以 你 这份 合同 是不是 就 值钱 呢 The contract then becomes valuable.

值 多少钱 How much is it worth?

是不是 值 1010 块钱 1010 dollars,

1010 元 对 不 对 Right?

我 拿 1010 元 我 给 你 这个 B C can then purchase the contract from B

然后 你 把 这份 合同 给 我 With 1010 dollars.

咱们 完成 一份 交易 After receiving the contract,

然后 我 拿到 这个 合同 之后 C can then pay 990 dollars

到 了 到期 的 时候 我 再 花 990 元 去 买 那个 球茎 to purchase the tulip when it is due.

那么 C 是不是 一共 花 了 2000 对 不 对 So C will spend 2000 dollars in total, right?

他 为什么 要花 2000 块钱 买 这么 一份 纸 呢 Why is he willing to spend 2,000 dollars to buy such a piece of paper?

那 是因为 他 觉得 这个 东西 This is because C thinks that it can

可以 涨到 3000 可以 涨到 4000 对 吧 Rise to 3000 dollars or maybe 4000 dollars.

这个 就是 期货 的 交易 形式 This is how futures contracts work.

可能 还有 一些 细节 I may miss out some of the details,

但 大体 的 意思 就是 这个 样子 的 But you get the general idea.

那 我们 来看 一看 这个 B So now let's look at B

这个 B 最 开始 花 了 多少钱 How much money does B spend initially?

他 一共 就 只花 了 10 块钱 It is only 10 dollars.

最后 他 拿 回来 多少钱 And how much money does he earn?

他 拿 回来 1010 元 It is 1010 dollars.

涨 了 多少倍 他 赚 了 100 倍 对 不 对 How many times has the value of tulip increased? 100 times. Right?

他花 10 块钱 就 赚 了 1000 块钱 He earns 1000 dollars with only 10 dollars,

他 不 就 赚 了 100 倍 吗 Does he not earn 100 times?

他会 去 关心 Does he care

最后 这个 C 拿 不 拿到 这个 球茎 吗 Whether C will be able to get the tulip in the end?

他 根本 不 关心 Not at all.

他 只 关心 自己 这张 合同 能 不能 卖得 出去 He only cares whether he can sell out this contract.

咱们 再 回过头来 看 C let's now look at C

C 拿到 这个 合同 之后 After getting the contract,

是不是 也 会 持有 到期 拿 这个 球茎 Will he also hold it until it is due to purchase the tulip?

他 不会 的 Nope.

2000 块钱 买 一个 球茎 你 说值 吗 Do you think it is really worth it to buy a tulip with 2000 dollars?

他会 想 有 一天 价格 涨到 3000 He will think that one day when the price rises to 3000 dollars,

我 就 把 这份 合同 卖出去 I am gonna sell out this contract,

我 也 能 挣 1000 块钱 对 不 对 So that I can also earn 1000 dollars, right?

所以 期货 的 炒作 是 非常 厉害 的 So the speculation in futures contracts party was out of control.

当时 很多 人 不 只是 拿 现金 去 炒 这个 郁金香 球茎 A lot of people not just used cash to speculate in the market,

同时 他们 也 可以 借贷 They could also borrow loans,

而 你 这个 钱 可能 不 一定 都 是 你 自己 的 So the money they had did not necessarily have to be their own,

你 可能 会 借 很多 人 的 钱 对 吧 They might borrow money from a lot of people, right?

所以 这 一环套 一环 This created an infinite cycle,

这个 借债 的 债 就 非常 乱 And all the debts were quite chaotic and and confusing .

同时 还有 人 拿 东西 去 抵押 At the same time,

比如 拿 你们 家 的 牛 羊 cows, sheep or even houses

拿 你们 家 的 一些 房子 去 抵押 Were mortgaged by many people

抵押 完 了 之后 就 买 这个 郁金香 的 球茎 In order to buy the tulip

或者说 买 这份 期货 的 合同 Or the futures contracts.

当时 郁金香 狂热 就是 这个 样子 的 This is how the tulip mania was like.

那么 发展 到 高潮 的 时候 是 在 1637 年 的 时候 In 1637, this mania reached its climax.

1637 年 年初 的 时候 At the start of 1637,

在 1637 年 1 月份 的 时候 In January,

郁金香 球茎 的 价格 已经 非常 高 了 The price of tulip bulbs was already very high.

有 多 高 呢 How high?

比如说 有 一个 比较 好 的 品种 叫 奥古斯都 For example,

你 听 这 名字 你 就 知道 它 不 一般 there was a better breed called Augustus

这种 郁金香 的 价格 大概 是 多少 Which cost

大概 是 6290 荷兰盾 About 6290 Dutch guilder.

6290 荷兰盾 是 什么 概念 呢 How much is that?

当时 我们 说 过 一个 荷兰 的 手工业者 I mentioned that an ordinary Dutch craftsman

他 一年 的 收入 就 可以 养活 一家 四口 人 Could support a family of four with his income in one year.

一年 的 收入 有 多少 So how much was his annual income?

一年 的 收入 是 150 荷兰盾 每人每年 It was around 150 Dutch guilder per year.

也就是说 这 一株 郁金香 的 价格 Which means the price of one tulip,

相当于 一个 荷兰 的 手工业者 40 年 的 工资 was equivalent to 40 years' salary of an ordinary craftsman.

这个 价格 可以 在 阿姆斯特丹 的 港口 买 一栋 豪宅 With this amount of money, one could buy a luxury private estate in the port of Amsterdam.

阿姆斯特丹 是 当时 世界 上 最 繁华 的 港口 Which was the busiest port in the world at that time,

相当于 我们 现在 的 纽约 第五 大道 And was comparable to our current Fifth Avenue in New York.

说 你 在 纽约 第五 大道 买 一栋 豪宅 多少钱 How much money do you need to buy a luxury villa on Fifth Avenue in New York?

得 上 千万美元 吧 Around tens of millions of dollars.

这 一朵 郁金香 就值 上 千万美元 One tulip was already worth tens of millions of dollars,

就 当时 的 价格 就值 上 千万美元 At that time.

不过 再 疯狂 的 泡沫 也 总有 破裂 的 一天 However, no matter how insanely large a bubble can be, it will still burst one day.

我们 来看 一看 这 一场 泡沫 是 怎么 破裂 的 Now let's see how this bubble burst.

在 1637 年 的 2 月 的 时候 In February, 1637,

有人 开始 觉得 这个 交货期 快到 了 Someone started to realise that the due date for the contract is close,

你 看 这个 期货 是 在 1637 年 4 月份 交货 Which is in April, 1637.

那 你 在 1637 年 2 月 了 It was already the February of 1637,

到 了 4 月份 一 交货 Once the contract was due in April,

你 就 只能 花 好几千 块钱 买 一个 球茎 了 对 不 对 They would have to spend thousands of dollars on a tulip, right?

这个 东西 对 你 来讲 没有 什么 意义 However, this tulip did not really mean that much to them

所以 他们 就 着急 去 找 卖家 So they were anxious to look for potential contract buyers.

于是 就 造成 了 什么 呢 造成 了 价格 的 下跌 What did this lead to? The drop in the price of tulip.

那么 在 价格 开始 下跌 之后 So after the price dropped,

那 有些 借钱 给 别人 炒 郁金香 的 人 就 不 干 了 Those who lent money to others to buy the tulip started being worry.

他会 想 价格 开始 下跌 了 They would think “Now that the price has tumbled,

那 我 这个 钱 拿 得 回来 拿 不 回来 就 开始 追债 What if I can't have my money back? So they started to collect their debts.

他 一旦 开始 追债 了 Once they started collecting debts,

那么 这些 人 又 会 急于 把 自己 手中 的 Of course the borrowers would want to get rid of

这些 合同 脱手 对 不 对 Their contracts as soon as possible right?

所以 就 造成 了 价格 的 进一步 下跌 This again led to a more drastic fall of the price,

这样一来 形成 了 一个 正反馈 Creating a vicious cycle.

最后 价格 下跌 的 就 非常 非常 厉害 Eventually, the price of tulip plummeted drastically

价格 下跌 到 什么 程度 呢 Dropped to what extend?

比如 刚才 我们 说 的 这个 奥古斯都 这个 郁金香 For example, the Augustus I mentioned earlier on,

它 最高 价格 不是 6290 盾 吗 Which was worth 6290 Dutch gilder,

那么 到 最后 价格 下跌 到 最低 的 时候 In the end its price also plunged to its lowest point.

它值 多少钱 So how much was it worth?

它值 0.1 盾 Only 0.1 gilder.

价格 下跌 到 原来 的 六 万分之一 Its price fell to 1/60000 of its original price.

这就是说 这个 泡沫 吹 的 越 大 This shows that the larger a bubble

你 最后 破裂 之后 这个 下跌 的 就 越 狠 The greater the loss when it finally bursts.

然后 到 了 1637 年 4 月 的 时候 And then when it was

1637 年 4 月 这个 时候 In April, 1637

已经 找 不到 买主 来 买 这个 合约 了 There were no more buyers that were willing to purchase the contract,

郁金香 的 价格 跌 的 已经 是 不行 了 And the price of tulip plunged to its lowest,

这个 时候 荷兰政府 出台 了 一个 法律 This is when the Dutch government finally implemented a new law

说 废止 所有 的 郁金香 的 合约 To abolish all of the tulip contracts.

当然 这 一项 也 遭到 了 很多 人 的 强烈 反对 是 吧 Of course this was opposed vehemently by a lot of people,

比如说 你 约定 花 10000 块钱 去 买 For example if the original contract stated it required 10000 dollars to buy the tulip,

你 只 需要 花 350 块钱 这 合约 就 作废 了 They only need to pay 350 dollars to fulfil the contract,

你 就 损失 不了 多少 So the loss was minimised.

那么 假如 说 到 现在 还 没有 交割 的 人 if there were still people who hadn't delivered their contract,

你 拿 这个 合同 但是 没有 交割 的 人 And they were still holding the contract,

他 最后 只 损失 了 3.5% In the end they would only suffer from a loss of 3.5% of the original price of the contract,

交割 的 人 就 损失 了 96.5% 对 吧 However those who had delivered would loss 96.5% of the original price of the contract.

而且 就算 是 没有 交割 的 人 他 损失 3.5% And even though those who hadn't delivered only suffered from a loss of 3.5% of the original price of the contract,

他 的 上家 就要 承担 他 的 这些 损失 their last contact partner would had to bear these losses.

所以 总而言之 最后 大家 都 非常 惨 So in the end, everybody suffered from terrible loss,

许多 人 一夜之间 倾家荡产 And a lot of people went bankruptcy overnight

自己 的 房子 抵押 出去 了 And had to have their houses mortgaged

然后 买 了 一大堆 郁金香 球茎 回来 To buy a bunch of tulip in return.

最后 这个 郁金香 能 干什么 呢 What could these tulips be used for?

什么 也 干不了 是 吧 Nothing. Right?

人们 还 根据 这个 郁金香 狂热 Hence,

发明 了 一个 经济学 单词 The tulip mania,

名字 叫做 郁金香 效应 Was the first economic bubble recorded.

什么 叫 郁金香 效应 呢 So what exactly is an economic bubble?

就是说 人们 出于 对于 财富 的 这个 欲望 渴求 An economic bubble means, due to people's crave for fortune,

于是 在 炒作 开始 的 时候 往往 会 出现 羊群 效应 there is usually a bandwagon effect when investors are speculating the market,

就 看着 别人 买 自己 也 买 Meaning if they see others buying, they will follow;

看见 别人 卖 自己 也 卖 And if they see others selling, they also follow.

而 在 这 过程 中 理性 会 缺失 In the process, they may lose their rationality

最后 泡沫 破裂 造成 千万 人 倾家荡产 And the final burst of bubble renders many go bankrupt overnight.

那么 这件 事 就 称之为 郁金香 效应 After the tulip mania,

郁金香 狂热 之后 这个 荷兰人 伤心 了 几十年 The Dutch was distressed at the sight of tulip,

看到 郁金香 就 伤心 For decades.

不过 经过 精心 的 培育 However, after meticulous cultivation,

荷兰 就 培育 了 世界 上 最好 的 郁金香 品种 They finally cultivated the best tulip breed in the world.

郁金香 狂热 是 历史 上 有据可查 的 This tulip mania is well-documented in history

第一次 人们 针对 商品 的 炒作 As it is the first time people speculated in merchandise.

那么 这个 泡沫 过后 After this bubble,

人们 发现 世界 上 的 泡沫 此起彼伏 More bubbles appeared.

而且 每 一个 泡沫 长大 了 之后 都 无一例外 地 And without exception,

让 许多 人 倾家荡产 every bubble rendered many bankrupt，

我们 再 来讲 一个 这个 在 中国 Let's now talk about the bubble that happened in China

最近 几十年 发生 的 一次 炒作 商品 事件 A few decades ago,

那 就是 长春 的 君子兰 事件 The clivia bubble in Changchun.

长春 君子兰 事件 Some of the older generation might

这个 可能 岁数 稍微 大 一点 的 人 还 记得 这件 事 Remember this event,

那 是 在 80 年代 初期 的 时候 Which took place in the early 1980s,

那 时候 改革开放 刚 开始 When the Chinese economic reform just began.

人们 对于 很多 商品 都 非常 的 盲目 The concept of market was still foreign to many people,

于是 就 爆发 了 这样 一个 事件 And hence as a result, the calivia mania broke out.

君子兰 这种 花 它 不是 中国 本土 的 花 Clivia is originally not native to China,

它 原产 于 非洲 它 是 非洲 南部 的 一种 野花 It originated from South Africa

后来 这个 被 殖民者 带到 了 日本 And was brought by colonists to Japan.

在 日本 占领 满洲 的 时候 When Japan occupied Manchuria,

又 被 日本 的 皇室 送给 了 中国 的 伪满 的 皇帝 溥仪 It was brought to the Chinese imperial Emperor Fuyi as a gift by the Japanese monarch.

送给 了 溥仪 之后 After receiving the clivia ,

这个 溥仪 就 把 它 当作 一种 宫廷 花卉 Fuyi started to grow it

栽种 在 长春 的 伪满 皇宫 里边 Within his palace in Changchun.

后来 伪满 倒台 了 之后 And after his rule was overthrown,

这个 花 就 流落 到 长春 的 民间 了 This flower started to appear in ordinary people's houses in Changchun.

民间 有 一些 人 就 开始 种植 这个 君子兰 Hence ,people started growing clivia,

君子兰 这个 名字 非常 好听 叫 君子兰 对 吧 And named it “Jun Zi lan” in Chinese,

所以 很多 人 喜欢 养一 两盆 附庸风雅 where “jun zi” refers to people of noble characters and virtues, and “lan” means flower.

所以 这个 君子兰 价格 当时 还是 挺 高 的 Its unique name in Chinese attracted many Chinese consumers and also due to its scarce supply,

因为 这种 花 还是 挺少 的 Its price was relatively higher than other flowers.

那么 在 1982 年 的 时候 In 1982,

这个 政府 注意 到 君子兰 价格 比较 高 了 The government noticed the high price of clivia,

于是 就 出台 了 限价 令 And hence enforced a limitation on its price,

就 说 君子兰 的 价格 它 不能 太高 Which was not allowed to exceed

那么 最高 不能 超过 多少 呢 200 yuan (Chinese currency).

不能 超过 200 元 一盆 (equivalent to 28 American dollars)

200 元 一盆 Some people might say that,

有人 说 这 一 盆花 200 元 也 不贵 200 yuan for a flower is not that expensive.

但 问题 是 这个 时间 是 1982 年 however, that was in 1982,

那个 时候 一个 工人 的 工资 一个月 才 挣 十几块 钱 Where an ordinary worker only earned a dozen yuan a month,

也就是说 200 元 相当于 一年 多 的 工资 In other words, 200 yuan is equivalent to more than one year's salary of a worker,

那 这个 价格 定 的 其实 已经 是 非常 高 了 That price was actually very high.

本来 以为 限价 令会 促使 君子兰 价格 回落 However, when the government thought that

但是 后来 这个 花卉 商 搞 了 一个 活动 the limitation on price would cause the price of Clivia to fall back,

同样 是 在 1982 年 的 时候 The flower suppliers initiated an exhibition

当时 这个 种 君子兰 的 人 就 搞 了 一个 活动 In 1982,

叫 什么 呢 叫 拯救 大熊猫 君子兰 义展 Called “Save the panda” clivia exhibition.

说 这个 当时 中国 的 国宝 大熊猫 急需 拯救 They claimed that the panda in china is in desperate need of salvation,

所以 需要 人 捐钱 没 钱 怎么办 And they needed people to donate.

我 搞 义展 As a result, they came up with the idea of organising the exhibition

我 把 我养 的 这个 君子兰 拿 出来 给 大家 看 To display their clivia to the public,

你 交 门票 然后 把 这个 钱 捐给 大熊猫 Who would have to purchase tickets to enter.

那 这个 捐 了 多少钱 呢 The money collected would then be donated for the “Save the Panda” project.

当时 的 门票 是 0.5 元 So how much was donated?

后来 看人 非常 多 就 涨 到 了 1 块钱 The ticket at the time was 0.5 yuan but rose to 1 yuan after receiving a positive response from the public.

结果 挣 了 17000 元 In the end, they earned 17000 yuan

挣 了 这么 多钱 交给 政府 And handed over all the money to the government.

那 政府 当然 非常高兴 了 对 不 对 Of course, the government was pleased

于是 在 1984 年 的 时候 after receiving such a great amount of money

1984 年 的 时候 这个 长春市 政府 And hence in 1984,

他 的 这个 口风 又 变 了 The government changed its mind

我们 不去 限价 了 限价 这 事 没有 意义 And said it would stop limiting the price of clivia

我们 要 干什么 呢 as it was meaningless,

我们 要 发展 窗台 经济 And they were going to develop “Window Economy.”

什么 叫 窗台 经济 呢 What is “Window Economy”?

就是说 每家每户 都 应该 在 窗台上 That is to say,

放 几盆 君子兰 用来 发展 经济 every household shall put a few pots of Clivia on their window sill

这 就是 所谓 的 窗台 经济 to develop economy.

同时 这个 君子兰 还 被 定为 长春市 的 市花 At the same time, this Clivia was also designated

长春市 的 市花 as the municipal flower of Changchun City

所以 当时 就 有 很多很多 的 人 就是 买 君子兰 So there were a lot of people at that time who bought Clivia.

甚至 有 很多 人 贪污 And some people even embezzled public funds

用 这个 公款 去 买 君子兰 To buy clivia.

还 发生 过 很多 很 奇怪 的 事 There have been many strange things.

比如说 当时 鞍山 检察院 有 一个 检察官 For example, there was a prosecutor at the Anshan Procuratorate,

这个 检察官 带 着 自己 三个 兄弟 Who, along with three of his friends,

四个 人 全副武装 去 抢劫 了 一盆 君子兰 Fully armed himself to rob a pot of clivia.

再 比如说 有 两个 人 他们 是 亲戚 What's more, it was also reported that

弟弟 为了 抢 君子兰 杀 了 自己 的 姐姐 对 吧 A man killed his own sister just for the clivia.

当时 发生 了 很多 刑事 的 事件 There were many criminal cases at the time.

到 了 1985 年 的 时候 这种 狂热 达到 了 巅峰 In 1985, this mania reached its peak.

这个 巅峰 到 程度 呢 To what extent?

我们 举 两个 例子 let's take a look at two more examples.

第一个 例子 是 有 一个 港商 跑 到 长春 去 参观 The first example is about a Hong Kong businessman who went to visit Changchun

看中 了 一盆 君子兰 And was hooked on a pot of clivia.

就 跟 这个 养 君子兰 的 人 说 He then asked the farmer

我能 不能 买 你 这盆 君子兰 或者 我换 Whether he could purchase this calivia

我用 我 这个 皇冠 轿车 来换 你 的 君子兰 Or trade with his “Crown” car.

皇冠 是 什么 概念 How luxurious is the “Crown” car?

当时 的 省部级 领导 都 不 一定 坐得 上 皇冠 是 吧 Even the provincial and ministerial leaders at that time might not own one.

这种 车是 当时 看来 非常 高级 的 So the car was indeed luxurious at that time.

用 这种 车来 给 你 换 一盆 君子兰 那个 人不换 Even so, the farmer was unwilling to trade.

君子兰 价格 就 到 这种 程度 So we can imagine how exorbitant the clivia was at that time.

后来 有 一个 人 他 把 一盆 君子兰 Later, there was a man who sold a pot of Clivia.

卖 给 了 一个 哈尔滨人 To a person living in Harbin

卖 了 多少钱 卖 了 14 万元 At a price of 140,000 yuan.

14 万 万元 买 了 一 盆花 140,000 yuan for a pot of flower!

当时 按照 黄金价格 来算 According to the price of gold at that time,

14 万元 我 可以 买 4000 克 黄金 With 140,000 yuan, he could buy 4000 grams of gold.

这 盆花 都 不值 4000 克 对 不 对 And certainly a pot of flower did not worth

它 可以 买 4000 克 黄金 4000 grams of gold.

北京 的 房价 当时 300 块钱 一 平米 Beijing's house price was 300 yuan a square meter at the time.

14 万 可以 买 北京市区 的 五套 房子 With 140,000 yuan, one could buy

一 盆花 可以 买 五套 房子 Five houses in Beijing's urban area.

所以 当时 的 价格 炒作 得 是 非常 非常 厉害 So we can see how crazy this clivia mania was at that time.

街头巷尾 不 议论 别的 Everyone was talking about

大家 全都 在 议论 君子兰 的 价格 The price of clivia everywhere.

当时 有 这种 说法 说 你 要 想 挣钱 很 简单 There was such a saying that it was easy to make money.

你 跑 到 这个 街东 去 买 一盆 君子兰 One could simply buy a pot of clivia on the street,

走到 街西 你 就 挣钱 了 是 吧 And could already sell it to someone else and earn money by the time he/she reached the end of street,

当时 这个 有 一种 说法 There was also another saying that,

说 你 拿 着 一盆 君子兰 到 商店 去 随便 换 东西 One could use a pot of Clivia to trade for everything in a store.

拿 着 一盆 君子兰 走 红旗街 If one held a pot of Clivia walking on Hongqi Street

你 不用 走 到头 The price of clivia could rise by at least three folds

你 的 这个 君子兰 价格 就 可以 涨 三次 Before he/she reached the end of the street.

当时 就 疯狂 到 这种 地步 It was that crazy.

那么 当然 最 疯狂 的 泡沫 也 是 破裂 最快 的 however, of course the craziest bubble was also the fastest to burst.

1985 年 的 时候 In 1985,

长春 的 这个 君子兰 热 又 引起 了 一些 人 的 注意 The clivia once again attracted the attention of some people,

于是 在 吉林省 的 省 报上 连续 发表 了 三篇 文章 Who published three articles in a row on the provincial newspaper of Jilin province

去 指责 君子兰 的 这个 价格 To accuse the exorbitant price of clivia.

第一篇 文章 叫 《 奇高 的 君子兰 花价 能 维持 多久 》 The first article was called "How long can the insanely high price of the clivia last?"

第二篇 文章 叫 The second article was called

《 再 谈奇 高 的 君子兰 花价 能 维持 多久 》 "How long can the insanely high price of the clivia last?(II)”

第三篇 叫做 The third one was called

《 不能 靠 挖 国家 墙角 来 哄抬 君子 谈 价格 》 对 吧 “One could not take advantage of the state by price ramping clivia.”

这个 省报 连发 了 省报 三连 了 之后 After the three articles were published,

很快 人民日报 也 跟着 发了 一篇 文章 Before long the Communist party's newspaper

这个 人民日报 发 的 文章 就 说 Also published an article titled

《 君子兰 为什么 能够 风靡 长春 》 "Why can Clivia be so popular in Changchun?"

这个 党报 的 指示 引起 了 政府 的 恐慌 This article caused the government panic,

当时 政府 就 赶紧 出 了 一些 政策 Who soon implemented several policy,

比如说 君子兰 在 交易 的 时候 要交 60% 的 税 For instance, a 60% tax would be charged on every purchase of clivia.

这样一来 就 没有 人 再 买 君子兰 了 So no one bought it any more.

于是 君子兰 就 一夜之间 从 天之骄子 As a result, the Clivia was no longer a luxurious merchandise,

变成 了 垃圾堆 里边 的 常客 But was always founded in rubbish dump.

君子兰 在 长春 让 很多 人 伤心 This had upsetter many citizens in Changchun,

很多 人 倾家荡产 And caused many bankrupt.

后来 有人 统计 According to a statistics,

君子兰 价格 大概 是 跌 到 了 原来 的 1% 左右 The price of clivia plummeted to 1% of its original price.

现在 长春 因为 养 了 很多 君子兰 yet, now a lot of people in Changchun are planting clivia,

所以 培育出 世界 上 最好 的 君子兰 品种 And have cultivated the best breed of clivia.

你 到 什么 地方 去 比赛 No matter what contest it is in,

那 长春 都 是 拿 第一 对 不 对 Changchun's clivia is always the winner.

跟 这个 荷兰 的 郁金香 其实 是 挺 像 的 This is similar to the tulip in Netherlands.

无论是 长春 的 君子兰 还是 荷兰 的 郁金香 Whether it be clivia in Changchun, or tulip in Netherlands,

它们 本质 上 都 是 一种 击鼓 传花 的 游戏 They are essentially a game of passing on the “flower” before the beating “drum” stops.

买 君子兰 和 郁金香 的 人 People who buy clivia or tulip,

并 不在乎 这 盆花 到底 值 多少钱 Do not care how much the flower is actually worth.

他们 所想 的 只是 要 把 这 盆花 尽快 的 出手 All they care is to sell the flower as soon as possible,

然后 让 自己 大 赚 一笔 So that they can make a great profit.

那么 要 维持 商品 的 价格 Then in order to

在 这样 一个 高位 向上 运行 keep up with the increasing price,

必须 保证 有 更 多 的 社会 资金 不停 的 加入 We must ensure more and more funds will join continuously.

那么 当有 一天 没有 更 多 的 资金 加入 的 时候 So if one day, no more people invest in these goods,

这个 商品 的 价格 就 会 一夜之间 崩盘 The price of the goods will plunge overnight,

投资者 们 就 会 血本无归 And speculators will have no way to claim their money back.

最近 几十年 我们 所 炒作 的 品种 In recent years, the price ramping of

比如说 大蒜 普洱茶 冬虫夏草 藏獒 garlic, garlic Pu'er tea, Cordyceps sinensis, Tibetan mastiff

无一不是 如此 All belong to this phenomenon.

那 现在 00 后 又 开始 炒鞋 了 Now that the Z- generation start to raise up the price of shoes.

我 不 否认 有 一些 优质 的 公司 I don't deny that there are some credible companies,

可以 在 几十年 的 时间 里面 That can raise their stock price by dozens or even hundreds of times

股价 上涨 几十倍 甚至 上 百倍 In a few decades,

但是 如果 你 发现 了 However, if you find out that

一种 商品 在 一个月 或者 两个 月 的 时间 里 The price of a product skyrockets by dozens or hundreds of times

价格 就 可以 上涨 几十倍 上 百倍 的话 in one month or two months.

那 基本上 就是 一个 泡沫 没跑 了 For sure, this is nothing but another bubble.

历史 告诉 我们 According to past experiences,

没有 一个 泡沫 是 可以 永远 吹下去 而 不 破裂 的 No bubble can keep expanding without bursting.

当 大家 看到 这种 狂热 的 时候 So when you confront this type of mania,

一定 要 保持 清醒 的 头脑 Remember to think clearly.

看着 这 历史 上 血淋淋 的 教训 We must not forget the lesson

不要 光 看着 贼 吃 肉 不看 贼 挨揍 Learned from the past experiences.
