我 想 趁 這個 時機 回顧 一下 過去 一年，
I want to take this opportunity to look back on the past year
然後 跟 你們 說 我 的 感想，
tell you my thoughts
還有 對 你們 的 感謝。
and say thanks to you all.
首先 我 還是 要教 你 一下 中文。
First of all, I still want to teach you some Chinese.
我 剛剛 說 我 的 podcast一歲 了，
I just said my podcast is 1 year old,
你們 知不知道 另外 一種 說法？
do you know another way of saying it?
這裡 除了 說 我 的 podcast一歲 了，
In addition to saying that my podcast is one year old,
我們 還 可以 說 我 的 podcast 一週年 (1-year anniversary)了。
we can also say it's my podcast's 1-year anniversary.
週年 ，就是 英文 的anniversary。
週年 is anniversary in English.
週年 跟 生日 不 一樣 的 是 它 不能 用 在 人 身上，
The difference between 週年 and 生日 is that 週年 can't be used on people.
我們 只能 用 在 一件 事情 、一個 組織 或是 一個 團體 上。
We can only use it on things, organizations or groups.
像是 前 陣子 英國 就 有 發生 一件 大事，
For example, a major event happened in the UK a while ago,
就是 英國女王 登基 (ascend the throne)七十 週年，
that is, the 70th anniversary of the Queen's ascending the throne, which
意思 就是 英國女王 已經 成為 女王 70年 了。
means that the Queen of England has been Queen for 70 years.
那台灣 過去 一年 也 有 發生 了 一件 值得 (worth)紀念 的 事，
n the past year, there was something worth remembering in Taiwan
就是 「台灣 文化 協會 」這個 組織 成立 一百週年。
which was the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the "Taiwan Cultural Association".
「台灣 文化 協會 」是 對 台灣 歷史 很 重要 的 一個 組織，
he "Taiwan Cultural Association" is an organization that is very important to Taiwan's history.

我 介紹 了 一個 叫做 《甘露水 》的 雕像 還有 一點 「台灣 文化 協會 」的 故事。
I introduced a statue called "kam loo tsui" and a little bit of the story about the "Taiwan Cultural Association".
講到 這裡 我 就 想 說 做 這個 podcast很 好 的 一件 事是 它 讓 我 可以 記錄 我 生活 中 的 大小事，
Speaking of which, I want to say one of the good things about doing this podcast is that it allows me to record the big and small things in my life.
我 幾乎 生活 中 所有 的 事情 都 可以 拿來 教 大家 中文。
Almost everything in my daily life can be used to teach you Chinese.
像是 我 剛剛 講的 「台灣 文化 協會 」那集 的 靈感 就 是從 我 看 的 一個 展覽 來 的。
For example, the inspiration for the episode of "Taiwan Cultural Association" I just talked about came from an exhibition I saw.
還有 像是 比較 台灣 跟 澳洲 、比較 台灣 跟 日本 的 這些 內容 也 是從 我 在 不同 國家 生活 的 經驗 來 的。
Also things like comparing Taiwan and Australia, and comparing Taiwan and Japan, are also based on my experience living in different countries.
甚至 是 生活 中 很小 、很 微不足道 (trivial/not important enough to mention)的 事情，
Even trivial things in life, like
像是 podcast第一集 、我 早上 的 例行公事，
the first episode of my podcast, my morning routine,
連 這種 微不足道 的 事情 我 也 可以 拿來 跟 大家 分享，
I can share with you even trivial things like this
而且 還有 很多 人 聽，
And there were still many people who listened
我 覺得 受寵若驚(flattered)。
I felt flattered.
受寵若驚 的 意思 是 有人 稱讚 你 、或是 有人 對 你 很 好 你 覺得 很 開心，
To be flattered means that someone praises you or treats you well and you feel very happy,
但是 你 又 覺得 自己 不 值得 (deserve)別人 對 你 這麼 好，
but you also feel that you don't deserve to be treated so well
這時候 你 就 可以 說 你 受寵若驚。
here you can say you're flattered.
我 覺得 受寵若驚 是 因為 我 一直 都 有點 擔心 我 的 podcast不夠 好 也 不夠 有趣，
I'm flattered because I've always been a little worried that my podcast isn't good enough or interesting enough
但是 沒想到 每個 禮拜 都 還是 有 很多 人 會來 聽 我 的podcast，
but I didn't expect many people would still come to listen to my podcast every week
我 覺得 很 開心。
I'm really happy about it.
而且 有 很多 人 寫信 、傳 訊息 或是 留言 來 跟 我 說 我 的 podcast對 他們 很 有 幫助。
And a lot of people have written emails, messaged, or commented that my podcasts have been helpful to them.
讓 我 更 受寵若驚 的 是 還有 人 願意 花錢 來 支持 我 的podcast，
What makes me even more flattered is that there are people who are willing to pay to support my podcasts,
不管 是 請 我 喝咖啡、
whether it's buying me coffee
還是 加入 我 的 Patreon每個 月 固定 支持 我。

那 就 像 我 剛剛 講的，
And like what I just said,
我 的 podcast讓 我 可以 把 生活 中 的 大小事 記錄下來，
my podcast allows me to record the big and small things in my life, and
我 覺得 這個 podcast好像 也 變成 我 的 一本 另類 的 日記。
I feel like this podcast has become an alternative diary for me.
另類 ，就是 英文 的alternative，
另類，is alternative in English,
就是 跟 主流 (mainstream)不 一樣 、跟 一般 人想 得 不 一樣。
that is, it is different from the mainstream and different from what people think.
我們 說 「一本 日記 」通常 一般 都 會 想到 一本 筆記本 或是 一 本書。
When we say "a diary", we usually think of a notebook or a book.
日記 的 主人 會 把 生活 中 發生 的 事 寫 在 日記 裡面，
The owner of the diary will write the events in their life in the diary.
現在 是 網路 時代 嘛，
Now in the age of Internet,
應該 也 滿多人 是 用 打字 的，
There should be many people who type,
他們 用 電腦 或 手機 把 日記 打 出來。
who use their computer or mobile phones to type out the diary.
但是 用 錄音 的 方式 來 寫日記 應該 還是 很少 見 的 吧？
But it should still be rare to write a diary by recording, right?
我 自己 是 沒有 寫日記 的 習慣，
I don't have the habit of keeping a diary myself.
我 試過 好 幾次 ，但是 每次 都 只 寫 幾天 就 沒有 繼續下去 了。
I tried several times, but every time I only wrote for a few days and didn't continue.
不過 回想起來 台灣 的 教育體制 (education system)其實 會 逼 我們 寫日記 耶！
But in retrospect, Taiwan's education system actually forces us to keep a diary!
像是 國中 的 時候 每個 學生 都 會 有 一本 叫做 「聯絡簿 」的 本子，
For example, in middle school, every student will have a book called a "contact book".
聯絡簿 通常 都 是 寫 老師 每天 給的 作業 有 什麼，
The contact book is usually used to note down the homework given by the teacher every day.
也 有 一個 地方 會 叫 我們 寫日記，
There's also a place where we will be asked to write a diary,
然後 每天 回家 都 要給 家長 簽名(sign)、
and then we will give it to our parents every day after we go home.
就是 給你 的 爸爸 或 媽媽 簽名，
like asking your mum and dad to sign it
而且 老師 每天 也 會 把 大家 的 聯絡簿 收去 看。
and the teacher will check everyone's contact book every day.
基本上 你 日記 上 寫 什麼 你 的 老師 還有 你 爸媽 都 會 看到，
Basically anything written in your diary will be seen by your teacher and your parents,
所以 想當然 地 (obviously)沒有 人會 寫 真心話(one's real thoughts)。
so obviously no one will write their real thoughts.
真心話 就是 你 內心 真的 在 想 的 事情。
that is, what is really on your mind.
正是 因為 我 很少 寫日記 也 很少 把 我 的 真心話 記錄下來，
It is precisely because I rarely keep a diary and write down how I really feel,
所以 我 才 會 覺得 能 在 我 的 podcast裡面 做到 這件 事情 很 難得 (rare)也 很 出乎意料(surprising; unexpected)。
so I feel that it's wonderful and unexpected to be able to do this in my podcast.
可能 我 幾年 後 再 回來 聽 我 一 開始 的 podcast會 覺得：
Maybe I will come back to listen to my first podcast in a few years and think:
「我 當時 到底 在 想 什麼？」、
"What the hell was I thinking?"
我 當時 怎麼 這麼 不 成熟？」、
Why was I so immature at the time? ”,
或是 「我 當時 怎麼 會 講出 這麼 白痴 的 東西？」
or “How could I say such an idiot thing back then?”
但是 這不 就是 寫日記 好玩 的 地方 嗎？
But isn’t that the fun part of keeping a diary?
那 做 這個 podcast還有 另外 一個 好事 是 它 會 讓 我 想 做 很多 新 的 嘗試。
Another good thing about doing this podcast is that it makes me want to do a lot of new things.
幾個 月 前 我 開始 了 另外 一個podcast，
A few months ago I started another podcast
叫做 《來句 中文 Lychee Mandarin》。
called Lychee Mandarin.
我 每一集 都 會 從 一個 台灣 的 新聞 裡面 抓出 一個 重要 的 句子，
In each episode, I will grab an important sentence from Taiwanese news,
改寫 一下，
adapt it,
然後 跟 你們 解釋 句子 裡面 的 每 一個 詞。
and explain every word in the sentence to you.
我 想 藉由 (through)這樣 的 方式 讓 你們 慢慢 學會 台灣 新聞 裡的 中文，
I want to help you slowly learn Chinese in Taiwan's news through this method,
而且 也 順便 讓 你們 知道 台灣 人 在 關心 的 事情 是 什麼。
and also let you know what Taiwanese care about at the moment.
就 我 自己 學 語言 的 經驗，
From my own experience in language learning,
我 覺得 要 聽懂 那個 語言 的 新聞 真的 比較 困難，
I think it is really difficult to understand news in that language,
因為 新聞 裡面 的 用字 又 跟 我們 平常 生活 裡面 用 的 字 不 太 一樣，
because the words used in news are different from those used in our daily life, and
通常 會 更 正式 一點。
are usually more formal.
而且 新聞 的 主題 也 很 廣泛，
And the topics of news are also very broad,
像是 科學 、經濟 、政治 、歷史，
such as science, economics, politics, history,
各種 主題 無所不包(it includes everything)，
it includes every kind of topics,
但是 也 是 因為 這樣，
but also because of this,
我 自己 覺得 藉由 新聞學 一個 語言 是 一個 很 有效 的 方式。
I think it is a very effective way to learn a language through news.
那 我 還有 另外 一個 新 嘗試 是 我 開始 做 一系列 的 影片 放在 YouTube上，
Another thing that I tried is that I started to make a series of videos on YouTube.
這個 系列 叫做 《中文 怎麼 說？How to say this in Mandarin?》。
This series is called 《中文怎麼說？How to say this in Mandarin?》。
這 系列 的 影片 我 主要 是 用 英文 來 解釋 中文 的 詞，
In this series of videos, I mainly use English to explain Chinese words.
我 想 專注 在 怎麼 把 一個 英文 的 字 翻成 中文，
I want to focus on how to translate an English word into Chinese.
那 影片 裡面 我 也 會 盡量給 你們 很多 不同 的 例句。
In the video, I will try to give you as many different example sentences as possible.
我會 想 做 這個 系列 是 因為 中文 跟 英文 是 兩個 很 不 一樣 的 語言，
I want to do this series because Chinese and English are two very different languages,
所以 兩個 語言 有 很多 詞彙 是 沒 辦法 直接 對應 的。
so there are many words in the two languages that cannot be directly corresponded.
像是 我 最近 的 影片 就 有 介紹 「知道 」跟 「認識 」這 兩個 詞 的 差別。
For example, my recent video introduced the difference between the words "know" and "know".
在 英文 裡面 這 兩個 詞 都 是know，
In English, these two words are both known,
但是 在 中文 裡面 這 兩個 詞是 分開 的、
but in Chinese, these two words are separated,
兩個 詞 背後 的 概念 不 一樣，
the concepts behind the two words are different,
所以 我 遇到 很多 學 中文 的 人 都 搞不清楚 「知道 」跟 「認識 」這 兩個 詞 的 差別。
so I meet many Chinese learners who are confused between "know" and "know".
我 希望 藉由 比較 英文 跟 中文 的 方式，
I hope that by comparing English and Chinese,
你們 可以 更 了解 中文，
you can understand Chinese more
而且 讓 你們 講 出來 的 中文 更 自然。
and make your Chinese more natural.
