Today I want to talk to you about a word that is difficult to translate into English. This word is "hot blood".

回到 正題 ，我 今天 會 想 講 「熱血 」這個 詞是 因為
Back to the topic, I want to talk about the word "hot blood" today because
第 31集 我 訪問 我 朋友 的 時候 ，她 就 有 提到 「熱血 」這個 詞。
when I interviewed my friend in episode 31, she mentioned the word "hot blood".
我 事後 因為 要 做 Patreon 上 的 「單字表 」，我 就 有 嘗試 把 這個 詞 翻成 英文。
And then, because I wanted to make a "vocabulary list" for Patreon, I tried to translate this word into English.
我 想來想去 英文 好像 沒有 完全 可以 相對 應 的 字 ，所以 我 就 暫時 用 「passion」這個 字。
I thought for a long time, and it seems that there is no corresponding word in English, so I use the word "passion" for the time being.
但是 其實 Passion 只是 「熱血 」這個 詞 一部分 的 意思 而已，
But in fact, Passion is only part of the meaning of the word "hot blood",
所以 我 今天 就 想來 詳細 介紹 我們 台灣 人 什麼 時候 會 用 「熱血 」這個 詞。
so today I want to introduce in detail when us Taiwanese will use the word "hot blood".
你 可能 會想 說 「熱血 」這個 詞 不是 很 簡單 嗎？
You might be thinking, isn't the word "hot blood" very simple?
就是 熱熱 的 鮮血 啊！
Like "fresh hot blood"
對 ，其實 中文 有 一句 話 是 「拋頭顱 ，灑熱血」。
Yes, in fact, there is a saying in Chinese that goes "throwing your head away and sheding your blood".
「拋頭顱 ，灑熱血 」，這裡 的 「拋頭顱 」就是 讓 你 的 人頭 落地、
"throwing your head away" is to let your head fall to the ground.
「灑熱血 」就是 讓 你 的 血 流 出來
"Sheding your blood" is to let your blood flow out.
聽 起來 有點 血腥 、有點 可怕。
It sounds a little bloody and scary.
這句 話 的 意思 是 一個 人為 了 一個 理想 、為 了 一件 他 很 想 實現 的 事情 努力，
This sentence means that a person works hard for an ideal, for a thing he really wants to achieve, and
他 努力 到連 自己 的 生命 都 不要 了。
he works so hard that he doesn't even care about losing his own life.
就算 人頭 落地 、就算 流 再 多 血 也 要 做 這件 事情 的 意思。
Even if the head falls, no matter how much blood is shed, I will do this thing.
如果 你 有 讀過 一點 台灣 的 歷史 的話，
If you have read a little about Taiwan's history,
你 應該 知道 台灣 過去 也 是 因為 有 很多 人 不怕 丟掉 自己 的 生命 就 為 了 幫 台灣 人 爭取 權利，
you probably know that in Taiwan's past, because many people were not afraid to lose their lives to fight for the rights of Taiwanese people,
我們 才 會 有 現在 的 民主 跟 自由。
so we can have the democracy and freedom we have now.
我們 就 可以 說 這些 人 拋頭顱 、灑熱血 就 為 了 爭取 民主自由。
We can say that these people "threw their head away and shed their blood" to fight for democracy and freedom.
但是 現在 應該 很少 人會 真的 「灑熱血」，
But now there should be very few people who will really "shed their blood",
所以 熱血 變成 一個 比較 抽象 (abstract)的 概念。
so "hot blood" has become a more abstract concept.
我們 現在 通常 會講 一個 作品 很 熱血，
Now we usually talk about a work being hot-blooded,
像是 一個 漫畫 很 熱血 、一個 電影 很 熱血 之類 的。
such as a comic that is hot-blooded, a movie that is hot-blooded, etc.
首先 我來 跟 你們 介紹 一下 什麼 是 熱血 的 漫畫。
First of all, let me introduce to you what a hot-blooded comic is.
我 不 知道 我 的 聽眾 裡面 有沒有 一些 喜歡 看 日本 漫畫 或是 動畫 的 人。
I don't know if there are some listeners who like to read Japanese manga or anime.
日本 的 這些 動漫 在 台灣 的 影響力 真的 很大，
The influence of Japanese manga and anime in Taiwan is really great.
我 相信 我 這 一代 的 台灣 人 幾乎 都 是 看 著 日本 動漫 長大 的。
I believe that almost all Taiwanese in my generation grew up watching Japanese anime.
那 日本 動漫 又 可以 簡單 地 分成 「少年 」跟 「少女」。
Japanese anime can be roughly divided into "shonen/boy" and "shojo/girl".
其中 ，少年 動漫 有 很多 都 是 有 「熱血 」這個 成分 在 的。
And lots of shonen manga and anime have the element of "hot blood".
比如說 有 一個 最 經典 的 動漫 叫做 《海賊王 One Piece》，
For example, one of the most classic anime called "One Piece",
這部 一定 可以 跟 「熱血 」劃上 等號(lit. put an equal sign)。
which can definitely be considered as "hot blood"
還有 這 幾年 很紅 的 動漫 《鬼滅 之刃 Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba》也 可以 算是 很 熱血 的。
There is also am anime "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba", which has been very popular in recent years.
如果 你 沒 聽過 這些 作品 ，沒關係，
If you haven't heard of these works, that's okay,
我來 解釋一下 為 什麼 我 說 這些 作品 很 熱血。
let me explain why I say these works are "hot-blooded."
要成 為 熱血 的 作品 呢 ，首先 它們 的 主角 一 開始 都 是 一個 普通人，
To become a "hot-blooded" work, first of all, their protagonist is usually an ordinary person at the beginning,
可能 是 一個 無名小卒 (a nobody)、或是 一個 沒有 特別 厲害 的 人。
maybe a nobody, or a person who is not particularly powerful.
但是 這些 主角 都 為 了 達成 一個 很 遙遠 的 目標 而 付出 很多 努力，
But these protagonists make a lot of effort to achieve a very distant goal.
像是 他們 會 接受 一些 很 困難 的 訓練 啊，
For example, they will receive some difficult training,
他們 也 會 常常 遇到 挫折 (setbacks)、一直 失敗，
they will often encounter setbacks and fail all the time,
但是 正是 因為 有 這些 磨練 (challenges)，他們 才 變得 很 厲害，
but it is precisely because of these challenges, they become very powerful,
甚至 變成 一個 英雄(a hero)。
and even became a hero.
所以 身為 觀眾 的 我們，
So us as the audience,
我們 看著 這些 主角 為 了 達成 目標 不 放棄 、還有 他們 就算 失敗 還是 重新 站 起來 的 精神(spirit)，
we watch these protagonists not giving up in order to achieve their goals, and the spirit of them getting back up even if they fail,
我們 也 會 覺得 熱血沸騰 、意思 就是 我們 的 情緒 會 變得 很 激動，
we will also feel "the blood boils," which means that we will become very excited,
我們 會 被 他們 感動 ，甚至 會 覺得 我們 也 想 跟 他們 一起 努力，
We will be moved by them, and even feel that we want to work hard with them together,
這 就是 一種 熱血 的 感覺。
which can be considered a "hot-blooded" feeling.
另外 一個 熱血 的 元素 是 「友情 (friendship)」。
Another element that can be considered "hot-blood" is "friendship".
友情 ，就是 朋友 之間 的 關係 、或是 朋友 之間 的 感情。
Friendship is the relationship between friends, or the bond between friends.
要 達成 一個 目標 我們 通常 很難 一個 人 做到，
To achieve a goal, it is usually difficult for us to do it alone.
我們 身邊 一定 會 有 支持 我們 的 朋友 、或是 跟 我們 同心協力 一起 達成 目標 的 朋友。
We must have friends around us who support us, or friends who work together with us to achieve our goals.
比如說 我們 看到 主角 因為 失敗 所以 垂頭喪氣(frustrated)，
For example, we see that the protagonist is frustrated due to failure,
甚至 是 快要 放棄 的 時候 ，他 的 朋友 來 鼓勵 (encourage)他 、幫 他 加油，
and even when he is about to give up, their friends come to encourage them, cheer them up,
然後 讓 主角 重新 振作起來(get oneself together)。
and then help the protagonist get themselves together.
我們 通常 看到 這種 劇情 也 會 被 他們 的 友情 感動 (moved)、也 會 被 激勵(inspired)，
When we see this kind of plot, we'll be moved and inspired by their friendship
會 覺得 ：「我 也好 想要 有 他們 之間 的 友情 喔 ！我 也好 想 加入 他們 喔！」
and we'll think: "I really want the kind of friendship they have! I really want to join them!"
你 也 可以 說 這樣 很 熱血。
You could also say this is "hot-blooded."
最後 的 一個 常見 的 元素 是 「挑戰 Challenges」。
A final common element is "challenges."
我 剛剛 有 提到 熱血 作品 的 主角 通常 都 要 通過 很多 挑戰 、很多 磨練，
I just mentioned that the protagonist of a hot-blooded work usually has to go through a lot of challengees.
最後 才 會 達成 他 的 目標。
before finally reaching their goal.
那 其中 一個 很 常見 的 挑戰 就是 「戰鬥」，
One of the common challenges is "fighting,"
比如說 跟 壞人 戰鬥 、跟 壞人 打架。
like fighting bad guys.
通常 主角 打架 的 對手 會 看起來 比 主角 還 厲害 ，主角 看起來 不 可能 打倒 那個 對手。
Usually the opponent the protagonists fight will look stronger than the protagonists, and it seems impossible for the protagonists to defeat that opponent.
然候 我們 看著 主角 怎麼 超越 自己 ，在 戰鬥 中 變強，
Then we watched how the protagonists surpassed themselves, became stronger in battle,
然後 打倒 比 他 自己 還 厲害 的 對手。
and then defeated opponents who were stronger than them.
看到 這樣 的 場景 我們 也 會 忍不住 覺得 ：「好 熱血 啊！」
When we see such a scene, we can't help but think: "It's so hot-blooded!"
其實 也 不 一定 要是 打架 這種 戰鬥 的 場景(fight scenes)，
In fact, it doesn't have to be a fight scene
另外 一種 很 常見 的 是 比賽(tournament; competition)。
another very common one is a competition or tournament
像是 很多 那種 運動 類型 的 作品 也 是 在講 一個 本來 不怎麼樣 的 球隊，
For example, many works involving sports are also about a sports team that was not very good at first.
經過 很多 努力 變得 很 厲害 ，然後 在 比賽 拿 冠軍 之類 的，
After a lot of hard work, it became very strong, and then won the championship, etc.
這種 劇情 也 會 讓 人 覺得 熱血沸騰。
This kind of plot will also make people feel excited("blood-boiling").
所以 一個 作品 會 讓 人 覺得 熱血 ，通常 它 的 故事 是 在講 一群 人為 了 一些 目標 做 了 很多 努力，
Therefore, a work will make people feel "passionate", usually its story is about a group of people who have made a lot of efforts for some goals,
然後 通常 它 是 正面 的 (positive)、會 激勵 人 的(inspiring)、
and then usually it is positive, inspiring, and
會 感動 人 的 (moving)、而且 是 會 讓 人 情緒 激昂 的(in high spirits)。
moving, and it'll make you in high spirits.
那 其他 還有 什麼 是 看 了 會 讓 人 覺得 很 熱血 的 作品 呢？
What other works are there that will make people feel "hot-blooded"?
我 馬上 想到 的 就是 《星際大戰 Star Wars》、再來 就是 漫威 (Marvel)他們 的 超級 英雄 電影。
My immediate thoughts are Star Wars and Marvel's superhero movies.
這些 電影 基本上 都 是 在講 主角 們 怎麼 跟 朋友 一起 合作，
These movies are basically about how the protagonists team up with their friends,
接受 一場 又 一場 的 挑戰 、進行 一場 又 一場 的 戰鬥，
take on challenges after challenges, fights after fights,
然後 最後 他們 終於 打敗 壞人。
and then finally they defeat the bad guy.
大家 看著 這些 電影 一定 會 覺得 很 熱血 吧！
Everyone watching these movies will definitely feel "hot-blooded"!
那 除了 漫畫 、動畫 、電影 這些 作品 之外 ，我們 日常生活 中 也 會 用到 熱血 這個 詞。
In addition to comics, animations, and movies, the word "hot-blooded" is also used in our daily life.
如果 我們 在 日常生活 中講 一件 事情 很 熱血，
If we talk about something being "hot-blooded" in our daily life,
這件 事 通常 是 一件 很 青春 的 事 、是 年輕人 才 會 做 的 事。
it's something that makes you feel young, something only young people do.
其實 青春 跟 熱血 我們 很常 放在 一起 講。
In fact, we often use youth and "hot-blood" together.
像是 第 31集 我 跟 朋友 聊 的 「玩 社團 」就是 一件 會 被 認為 很 熱血 的 事情，
For example, student clubs, which my friends and I talked about in episode 31 are considered something "hot-blooded",
因為 玩 社團 通常 是 一群 學生 為 了 某個 目標 做 很多 努力。
because student clubs are usually a group of students who make a lot of efforts for a certain goal.
像是 為 了 完成 一個 表演 努力 練習 跳舞 、為 了 比賽 努力 練球，
For example, to practice dancing hard to put together a performance, or practice hard for a sports game,
中間 可能 會 很 辛苦 、可能 會 吵架、
During the process, it may be very hard, people may fight,
但是 也 有 可能 會 感情 變得 更好 、可能 會 覺得很有 成就感。
but people may form a stronger bond, and may feel a sense of accomplishment.
玩 社團 真的 是 一件 很 青春 又 很 熱血 的 事！
Joining a student club really makes you feel youthful and "hot-blooded"!
再來 ，除了 為 了 一件 事情 很 努力 之外，
Besides, in addition to working hard for a certain thing,
做 一些 有點 衝動 (impulsive)、或是 有點 瘋狂 (crazy)的 事 也 常常 會 被 認為 很 熱血。
doing something a little impulsive or crazy is often considered "hot-blooded" too.
我 第一個 想到 的 就是 「夜衝」。
The first thing that came to my mind was "night rush".
夜衝 就是 你 跟 朋友 在 晚上 的 時候 騎 機車 出去玩，
Night rush is when you and your friends ride a motorcycle out to hang out at night,
像是 去 看 夜景 啊 、去 吃宵夜 啊 、甚至 玩 到 隔天 早上 看 日出。
such as watching night views, going to have a late night snack, or even hanging out until the next morning to watch the sunrise.
還有 另外 一個 是 「環島」。
There is another "round island tour".
環島 就是 繞著 台灣島 玩 一圈，
Round island tours mean to go around the island of Taiwan,
比如說 從 台北 順時針 玩 到 花蓮 、屏東 、高雄 、台 中 、再 回到 台北，
for example, going clockwise from Taipei to Hualien, Pingtung, Kaohsiung, Taichung, and then back to Taipei
這樣 就是 環島 一次。
This would be one tour.
再來 ，我來 跟 大家 分享 一下 我 自己 有 做過 什麼 青春 熱血 的 事情。
Now, let me share with you what I have done that can be considered "youthful and hot-blooded"
像是 颱風天 的 時候 去 音樂 祭 啊 、颱風天 的 時候 去 露營 啊、
Like going to a music festival on a typhoon day, going camping on a typhoon day,
還有 一天 之內 從 北海道 的 最 西邊 開車 開到 最 東邊、
driving from the far west of Hokkaido to the far east in one day,
或是 在 蘇格蘭 夜衝 到 蘇格蘭 北部 然後 再 開回 愛丁堡 看 日出。
or "night rushing" to the north of Scotland and then driving back to Edinburgh to see the sunrise.
這些 事情 現在 回想起來 感覺 都 滿 熱血 滿 青春 的，
Looking back on these things now, I feel "youthful and hot-blooded",
但是 又 會 覺得 現在 自己 好像 老 了 ，好像 再也 做不了 這麼 熱血 的 事情 了。
but I also feel like I am old now, as if I can no longer do such things.
講到 這裡 ，不 知道 你 有沒有 更 了解 「熱血 」這個 概念？

最後 ，我 想來 分享 另 一個 詞 「冷血」。
Finally, I would like to share another word "cold-blooded".
有 「熱血 」這個 詞 ，我們 當然 也 會 有 「冷血 」這個 詞。
If we have the word "hot-blooded", of course we'll also have the word "cold-blooded".
但是 冷血 的 意思 其實 跟 熱血 沒什麼 關係。
But the meaning of cold blood has nothing to do with hot blood.
我們 通常 說 冷血 (cold-blooded)都 是 指 一個 人 很 無情 、很 沒有 同情心 、或是 很 沒有 道德(moral)。
When we say cold-blooded, we usually mean that a person is ruthless, unsympathetic, or immoral.
如果 一個 人 看到 別人 有 困難 ，卻 見死不救 、不會 幫助 別人，
If a person sees other people in trouble, but does not help them,
你 就 可以 說 他 是 一個 冷血 的 人。
you can say that he is a cold-blooded person.
另外 一個 很 常見 的 詞 是 「冷血 殺人犯 」，意思 就是 一個 很 殘忍 的 殺人犯。
Another very common term is "cold-blooded murderer," which means a very cruel murderer.
所以 冷血 跟 熱血 的 意思 其實 沒什麼 關係。
So cold-blooded and hot-blooded have nothing to do with each other.
