先日 、私 、誕生日 でした ！

また 無事に ひと つ 、歳 を 重ねる こと が できました 。

誕生日 当日 は 、なんと 残業 を してました 。 って いう か 、先週 は 1週間 ずっと 残業 で 、疲れ切った 1週間 でした 。

誕生日 前日 の 夜 も 残業 だった のです が 、先に 家 に 帰っていた 旦那さん が 、私 クラフト ビール 好きな ん ですけど 、

旦那 さん が 近所 の クラフト ビール が 売って そうな お酒屋 さん を 巡って くれて 、色々な ビール 買って きて くれて あって

「誕生日 前夜 祭 」を して くれました 。

誕生日 当日 も 、これ また 残業 だった んですけど 、帰ったら シャンパン と お寿司 が 用意 されていて 、お祝い してもらいました 。

あと は 週末 に 友達 と 、さらに その 友達 と ご飯 に 出かけた のです が 、

帰り に その 友達 の 家 に 寄ったら ケーキ を 用意 して くれて あって 、そこ でも お 祝い して もらって 、

とっても 良い 誕生日 week を 過ごせました 。

いくつ に なって も やっぱり 誕生日 は いい です ね 。

どんどん おばさん に なって いきます が 、

今後 の 人生 で 一番 若い の は 、今日 、この 瞬間 、今 です から ね 。

楽しく 人生 攻めて いきたい と 思います 。

さて 、7月 の 初め に 私たち 夫婦 、引っ越し を しました 。

その 壮絶な 引っ越し の 模様 に ついて は 以前 、別の エピソード で お話して います ので 、まだ 聴いて いない よ という 方 は ぜひ チェック して いただきたい のです が 、

引っ越し 先 の エリア に ついて 、まだ 、そういえば お話し して なかった な と 思いまして 、

今日 は 今 住んで いる 新しい エリア に ついて 、いろいろ お 話して いこう と 思います 。

★とにかく 暑い

私 たち が 引っ越して きて 今 住んで いる の は 、カリフォルニア の 南側 、ロサンゼルス から 車 で 1時間 、1時間半 くらい かな 、東側 、内陸 に 行った 辺り です 。

引っ越して くる まで 知ら なかった のです が 、この 辺 の 地域 は 通称 、 Inland Empire と 呼ばれて います 。

日本語 に 直訳 する と 、 内陸 の 帝国 ? 内陸 帝国 ？

響き 、めちゃ かっこいい です よね 。 インランド EMPiRE 。

特徴 として は 、とにかく 暑い んです 。

引っ越して きて みて 、住み はじめて みて の 感想 、暑い 。

日本 人 の 方 は 特に です けど 、カリフォルニア って 聞いたら 、

年中 暖かくて 、ヤシ の 木 が そこら中 に 生えていて 、サーファー が そこら中 を 歩いてて 、

青い 空 と 青い 海 、ウェッ さ ー い 。 みたいな 。

って 、そういう イメージ を 持た れる と 思う ん です けど 、

カリフォルニア と 言って も 広い です から ね 。

LA 、 ロサンゼルス の 海 沿い と か 、 海 沿い を 南 に 下った サンディエゴ と か は イメージ 通り の 過ごし やすい 気候 かも しれません が 、

そんな 年中 暖かく なくて 寒くて 雪 が 降る 地域 も あれば 、

今 私 が 住んで いる 地域 の ように 、夏 、尋常じゃない くらい 暑い 地域 も あります 。

過ごし やすい って いう ね 、表現 から は 程遠い です ね 。

特に ここ 2週間 ぐらい は 、この エリア だけ で はなくて カリフォルニア 全体 が 暑かった んです よ 。

警報 が 出る 位 「暑い から 気 を つけて ください 」って いう 警報 が 出る 位 暑い んです よ 。

連日 の 40度 越え でした 。

幸い 、私 は 今 平日 は 働いてる ので 、エアコン の 効いた オフィス に います が 、夜 も ずっと 暑くて 暑くて 、

この 地域 に 新しく 引っ越して きた 私たち は 洗礼 を 浴びた 気分 でした ね 。

これ だけ 暑い と 、家 の 中 を 涼しく 保つ のが 大変な んです よ 。

ちゃんと した 新しい エアコン が 付いて いる 家 だったら 問題 ない と 思う ん です けど 、

我が家 みたい に 古い アパート で 、

リビングルーム に ちょこんと ある 、

「これ 、ちゃんと 動く の ？ 涼しく なる の ？ 」って 感じ の 頼りない エアコン 1台 で は 、到底 家 の 中 全体 を 冷やせる はず も なく 、

いまいち この エアコン 意味 が ある の か な ？ って 思う くらい な ん です よね 。

もちろん 、エアコン の 前 に 座って いれば 涼しい です し 、リビングルーム に いれば 、ま ぁ 。

でも 別の 部屋 に 行く と 完全に アウト です ね 。

サウナ 状態 です 。

我が家 に は 猫 が 2匹 いる ので 、たとえ 私たち 夫婦 が 両方 、日中 出かけて いた と しても 、

エアコン を 入れて おか なきゃ ダメ な ん です よ ね 。

電気 代 が めっちゃ かかる ん です よ 。

前 まで 住んで いた 、同じ カリフォルニア 州 です が 、モントレー の 辺り と いう の は 、夏 でも 涼しくて 、

1年 を 通じて それほど 気温 に 変化 が ない と いう か 、

真夏 であって も 激しい 運動 とか を しなければ 汗 を かく こと も ない ような 、

何なら 真夏 でも 、朝晩 は 涼しく 、少し 肌寒く 感じる ような 、そんな 気候 の 地域 でした 。

うち の 旦那さん に 至っては 年中 、ユニクロ の ウルトラライトダウン が 手放せない ような ね 、そんな 所 でした 。

私 たち は 、

夏 なら もう 少し 暑く 、太陽 が サンサンと 照って ね 、

ちょっと 暑い から 冷たい 飲み物 飲みたい な ！ 冷たい ビール でも 飲みたい ね ！ って なる ような 、そんな 地域 に 住みたい な 。

モントレー は ちょっと 涼し 過ぎる よ ね 。 なんて 事 を いつも 事 ある ごとに 言って いた ん です よ 。

住んで いた 時 は ね 。

でも 、そんな 話 を する と 、周り の 人たち は 皆 、口 を 揃えて 、

「この モントレー の エリア は 本当に 気候 が 最高で 過ごしやすい の よ 。 ここ が 最高 よ 。」

って 私 たち に 言う ん です よ 。 いって くる ん です よ 。

それ を 聞いて 私 たち は 、「この 暑がり の アメリカ人 達 め 。」 って ね 、思って た ん です ど 、

今回 離れて みて ね 、やっと わかった ん です よ 、みんな が 言って いる こと が 。

本当に 、モントレー 素晴らしい 。

最高 でした 。

やっぱり どうしても 、前 住んで いた ところ と 今 の ところ を 色々 と 比べて しまう ん です けど 、

その 前 住んで いた モントレー の あたり って 、家賃 が すごく 高い んです よ 。

カリフォルニア は 、家賃 が 高い エリア って 結構 あります けど 、

サンフランシスコ の 少し 下 の ベイ エリア と 呼ばれる 、

特に San Jose 、アップル と か Google と か 、 IT カンパニー が 多く ある ような シリコンバレー の 辺り とかも 家賃 が すごく 高い んです けど 、

私 たち が 前 住んで いた モントレー 、サリナス とか は その サンノゼ から 1時間 から 1時間半 ぐらい 南 に 位置して いたんです が 、

北 の 方 の 家賃 の 高さ が モントレー の 方 まで 広がって きて いて 、

年々 が 本当に 家賃 が 上がり 続けて いる んです よ 。

エリア として は ね 、すごく 良い エリア で は ある けれども 、家賃 が 高くて やってらんない ぜ ！ みたいな こと を 皆 ん な 言って います 。

それ に 比べて 、今 住んで いる この エリア の 家賃 は 、安く は 無い です けど 、前 の モントレー 近辺 と 比べたら 少し は 安い です 。

すごく 古い アパート って いう の は 変わり は ない ん です けど 、

でも 部屋 数 とか 色々な 条件 を 考える と 、総合的に 今 の 方が 安い です 。

でも 、気づいちゃった ん です よ 、電気 代 。 電気 代 が 高い 。

さっき も お 話しました が 、この 夏 の 暑さ は エアコン を つけ ずに は 乗り越えられない ですし 、

もう 、暑い 時間 、日中 は 外出 して 涼しい 所 、オフィス や 休み の 日 も 出かけちゃえば ？ って 感じ です けど 、

我が家 に は 猫 が います し 、

とにかく エアコン を つけっぱなし な ん です よ 。

だから 電気 の 使用量 が 半端 ない ん です 。

これまで 、アメリカ に 来て から 何回 か 引っ越しました が 、

ずっと 、その モントレー の エリア 、モントレー 郡 、モントレカウンティー から は 出て いなかった んです ね 、私たち 。

同じ エリア の 中 で 引っ越し を して いた ん です 、

もう 何 年 も 住んで きました が 、これ まで 1度 も エアコン も 使った こと が なかった んです よ 。

って いう か 、今 の アパート を 除く と 、これ まで 3箇所 、3つ の アパート に 住んで きました が 、

エアコン 自体 が なかった です ね 。

アパート に エアコン ついて いません でした 。

その くらい 、夏 涼し い ん です よ 。 エアコン 不要 。

そう 考える と 、電気 代 の 出費 が 今 の アパート は これ まで より も だいぶ 上がります よ ね 。

1年 中 暑い って いう わけで は なくて 、過ごしやすい 時期 も ある でしょう けど 、

まあ 、もう 9月 に 入りました が いまだに すごく 暑い ので 、まだまだ エアコン 使い そうです し ね 。

そう 、だから 、家賃 自体 は 安く なった けど 、

結局 電気 代 を プラス で 払わ なくちゃ ならなくて 、プラマイ 同じ くらい な んじゃないか なって 思う ん です よね 。

もしかすると プラマイプラス に も なる かもって 。

電気 代 の 他 に も この 暑さ に よって 、予想外 、予定外 の 出費 が 結構 ある んです よね 。

まず 初期 投資 として 、あれ 話しましたっけ 、

引っ越して きて 住み 始める 時 に 、各 部屋 の 窓 すべて に 、窓 の 外 から の 熱 を 遮断 する 、

遮 熱 フィルム みたいな 、絶対 名前 違います よ ね 、断熱 フィルム だっけ 、

遮 熱 ？ 断熱 ？

とにかく 熱 を 反射 して 、できる だけ 部屋 の 中 に 入れ ない ように する アルミホイル みたいな フィルム が ある んです けど 、

ミラーフィルム みたいな 、

それ を 全部 の 部屋 の 窓 に 貼ったり 、

あと は 元々 付いて いる エアコン 1台 だけ で は どうにもこうにも 生活 して いけない ので 、

扇風機 を 新しく 二 台 買いました 。

ちなみに 元々 あった 扇風機 と 、その 新しい 2台 の 扇風機 、合計 3台 が フル 稼働 で ビュンビュン 回ってます 。

ただ で さえ 引っ越し って お金 が かかった のに 、

この 暑さ の せい で 、こういう 予想しなかった 出費 とかも あって 、あれ 、なんか お金 が 飛んでいく ぞ 、って 思っています 。

この ほか に も 、日々 の 生活 の 中 で 暑い から こそ の 出費 が ある んです よ 。

今 まで より も お金 が かかっている こと 。

さあ 皆さん ここ で 問題 です 。

涼しい 地域 から この 暑い 地域 へ 引っ越して きて 、私 たち が 日常 生活 の 中 で 感じる 増えた 出費 、どんな こと でしょう か ？

シンキングタイム スタート ！

2つ ある ん です が 、

まずは 、 水 、 飲み物 に かかる お 金 です 。

水 を 含めて 、飲み物 の 消費 量 が 増えました 。

やっぱり 毎日 暑い から 、昼間 も 夜 も すごく 水 を 飲む んです よ 。

我が家 は 、5ガロン の 大きな 水 の ボトル 、アクアクララ みたいな 、日本 でも 今 使って いる お家 多い と 思う ん です けど 、

あれ で 水 を 買って きて 、ディスペンサー から その 水 を 使う ように してる んです けど 、

引っ越して くる 前 より も やっぱり 水 の 減り が 断然 早い んです よね 。

単純に 飲む 水 も そう だ し 、水の 使用 用途 として 、氷 を とても 消費 する ように なりました 。

新しい ね 、大きな 冷蔵庫 を 持っている ブルジョア な 上流階級 の 皆さん に は 懐かしい 響き かも しれません けど 、

我が家 は まだ 製氷機 に 水 を 入れて 、それ を 冷凍庫 で 凍らせて 氷 を 作っている ので 、それ に 水 を 結構 使います ね 。

毎日 の ように 氷 を 作らない と 追いつかない ほど 、やっぱり 暑い から 、冷たい 飲み物 が 飲みたく なる んです よね 。

わかる ん です よ 、 わかってます よ 、 美 意識 の 高い 女性 の 皆さん は 、

「お 水 は 常温 で 飲む の が 美容 に は いい の よ 、氷 なんて 入れちゃ ダメ ！ 」って 、そう 言う と 思う ん です けど 、

いやいや いやいや 、

そんな こと 言ってられ ない くらい 暑い んだから 。

氷 入れて 飲ま ない と やってられ ない くらい 暑い んだから 。

元々 、それほど 私 、日中 に 水分 を 取る 方 で は なくて 、

むしろ 、もっと お 水 、水分 を 取ら ない と な ーっ なんて 思って いた ん です けど 、

もう 引っ越して きて から は 、ゴクゴク 飲んでます ね 。

すぐ 喉 が 乾く 。

でも 最近 は 、平日 は 平日 の 昼間 は 仕事 を して いまして 、

オフィス に その お 水 の ディスペンサー が ある ので 、

朝 だけ コーヒー を 持っていけば その後 は オフィス の お水 、飲み 放題 な ので 、だいぶ 助かってます けど 、

働き 始める まで は ほんとに 昼間 も ガブガブ 家 で 水 飲んで た ので 、消費 が めっちゃ 速かった です ね 。

で 、家 で 飲む お 水 だけ で は なくて 、

外 で 、外出先 で ちょっと 飲み物 を 買おう かって いう 機会 も 増えました 。

以前 は 、私たち そんなに で 出かけている 時 に 、

例えば スーパー とか で ちょっと 喉 が 渇いた から ペットボトル の 飲み物 を 買おう とか 、

ちょっと ショッピング 中 に スタバ 飲み ながら 見て 回ろう と か 、

あんまり 外 出先 で そういった 飲み物 を 買う 、喉 を 潤す っていう 習慣 が なかった んです が 、

もう 暑くて 暑くて 。

ちょっと もう 、何か 飲もう ！ みたいな 。

そういう シーン が ね 、増えました 。

あと は マクドナルド とか に 売って いる 、何で したっけ 、ラッシー みたいな フローズン 系 の やつ 。

ラッシー ？ それ は インド か 。

スラッシー か 、え 、スラッシー ？ とにかく 、フローズン な やつ 。

あれ が 1ドル で 飲めます よ 、みたいな 、看板 が 、大きな 看板 が 至る所 に ある んです よ 。

街中 って いう か 、フリーウェイ 、高速道路 とか 、大きな 幹線道路 とか 。

それ 見て いる と 、あー 、この 辺 の 地域 は マクドナルド の この スラッシー 、めっちゃ 売れる んだろう なって 思ってます ね 。

これ だけ 暑い と 、冷たい 飲み物 の 売上 、絶対 高い です よね 。

っと いう 私 は 、まだ その マクドナルド の スラッシー 飲んだ こと ない です けど 、

1ドル で 一時 の 涼しさ が 手に入る のであれば 、しかも マック なんて どこ に でも あります し ね 、それ は みんな 飲む かも ね 、って 思います ね 。

と いう こと で ね 、外 出先 で の そういった 飲み物 を 欲する 頻度 が 明らかに 高く なった ので 、

その辺 の 出費 も 前 より も 多い ん だろう な ーって 思って います 。

間違い なく 暑い エリア 、地域 の 方 が 飲み物 の 売り上げって 絶対 高い です よね 。

お 水 、ジュース 、ソーダー 、あと ビール 、売れ まくってる んだろう な と 思います ね 。

あと もう 一 つ が 、あ 、暑い 地域 だ と この 出費 増える んだ 、って 思った の は 、

洋服 の 洗濯 に かかる お金 です 。

我が家 の アパート は 、

各 ユニット に 洗濯機 置き場 が ない ので 、

アパート に 住んで いる 人 用 の ランドリールーム が 、

アパート の 敷地 内 に ランドリールーム が あって 、そこ に 洗濯機 と 乾燥機 が ある んです けど 、

1回 洗濯機 を 回す の 25セント 6枚 だから 、1ドル 50セント かかります 。

で 、ドライヤー 、乾燥機 も 同じ です ね 、1ドル 50セント 。

だから 洗濯 機 1回 して 、乾燥 機 で 乾かす って いう 、その 1連 の 流れ で 3ドル かかる ん です よ 。

今 、1 週間 に 基本 的に 2 回 、2 回し 洗濯 を する ので 合計 6 ドル 。

引っ越して くる 前 の アパート も 同じ システム で 、

同じ 様 に アパート の 住人 専用 の ランドリールーム が あって 、そこ の 値段 も 同じで 1ドル 50セント ずつ 、洗濯 ・乾燥 で 合計 3ドル だった んです けど 、

洗濯物 の 量 が 、全然 少なかった です よね 。 前 は 。

洗濯 の 頻度 が 低かった って 言った 方 が 正しい ん です か ね 。

1週間 で 1回 し で 足りて た んじゃ ない です か ね 。

多い 時 でも 1週間 半 で 2回 し とか 、その くらい 。

夫婦 2人 で 、そんなに 洗濯物 出 ないで すし 、

デニム と か パンツ と か 、あと は 羽織り 物 と か 、どの 洋服 も 、

別に 1回 着た だけ で は 洗って なくて 、数 回 着たら 洗えば いい か 、程度 だった ん です よ 。 今 まで 。

下着 と か 、直接 肌 に 触れる キャミソール みたいな やつ は 毎回 洗います けど 、

厚手の 何かと か 、そい うの は 別に 毎回 洗って なかった ん です 。

でも 、今 の この 暑い エリア に 来て から は 、

暑くて 汗 を すごく かく ので 、もう 着たら すぐ 洗わ なきゃ ならない ん です よ 。

あと は 、一 度 出かけて 、帰って きて 、別の 用事 で また 出かける みたいな 時 に 、

汗だく だから 、着替えよう と か 、って 言って 別の 服 を 着たり 、

暑い から ちょっと シャワー 浴びよう って タオル を 使ったり して

そんな 感じ で どんどん 洗濯物 が 増えて 、

まあ ね 、これ も リスナー の 皆さん に よって は 、

そんな 1 回 3 ドル の 洗濯 代 が 増える の なんて 、 大した ことない でしょ 、って 思わ れる と 思います が 、

明らかに 目に見えて 回数 が 増えた ので 、

あー 、これ も 出費 増えて る んだ な 、って 思って います 。

この 暑さ 、

引っ越して くる 前 から 、暑い エリア だって こと は わかって いた んです が 、想像 以上 で 。

諦め という かね 、この 暑さ との 付き合い方 を 見出してきた 感覚 は あります けど 、

はい 、この エリア の 特徴 は とにかく 暑い って いう こと です 。

この後 も 続きます 。

★私 、ホーム シック です

今回 の 引っ越し で 、これ まで 住んで いた 地域 から 遠く 離れて 来た 私たち です が 、

暑さ に 続いて 、私 が 実感 している 大きな 違い 、

それ は 、交通量 が 多い 、と いう こと です 。 車 が 多い 。 道 が 混んでます 。

前々 から から LA 、ロサンゼルス の 辺り って 、どこ に 行く に も めっちゃ 道 が 混んでて 、常に 渋滞 している って 聞いていた んです が 、

この 辺 、 その ロサンゼルスカウンティ 、 所 謂 「 ロサンゼルス 」って 言わ れる エリア に は 私 が 住んで いる 所 は 入って いない と 思う ん です けど 、

十分 混んで います 。

人口 が 多い んでしょう ね 。

とにかく 交通 量 が 多くて 、人 が 集中 する 時間 帯 、要は 通勤 時間 帯 の 混雑 が 、通勤 ラッシュ が ひどい です 。

私 、職場 まで 結構 家 から 離れて いて 、毎朝 ラッシュ の 中 を 運転 して います 。

大きな フリーウェイ が たくさん あって 、どこ に 行く に も 乗り継いで 、何 号 線 から 何 号 線 に 移動して 、さらに 別の 何 号 線 に 行って …みたいな 、複数 の フリーウェイ を 使わなきゃ ならない こと が 多くて 、

少しずつ 慣れて きました が 、やっぱり 怖い です 。

で 、ビュンビュン 車線 変更 して 、危ない 危ない 。

さらに は トラック も 多い です 、この 辺り 。

前 住んで た ところ でも トラック よく 見かけました が 、畑 が 多い 地域 だった ので 、野菜 を 積んでいる 農家 の トラック とか が 多かった のに 対して 、

この 辺 は ロジスティクス 、流通 、物流 ？ の ハブ と いう か 、配送 センター みたいな の が 多い らしくて 、色んな トラック が いる んです よ 。 大きな 。

で 、トラック たち の 数 が 半端な い です 。

トラック の 横 とか トラック の 後ろ とか 走る の 嫌です よね 。

あと は トラック と トラック の 間 とか 走ら なくちゃ いけない の とか 、めっちゃ 怖い じゃない ですか 。

前 まで は 、トラック を 見て も 、あー この トラックキャベツ めっちゃ 積んで る じゃーん 。 って 思ったり 、

あ 、ブロッコリー 乗せた トラック から 落ちちゃった の か な 、勿体 無い ねぇ 。

なんて 、そんな のほほんと 思って いた 頃 が 懐かしい です けど 。

私 、怖がり なんで 、アメリカ に 来て から 運転 し 始める 時 に すごく ビクビク してました し 、

本当に 引っ越して くる 直前 まで 、交通 量 が 多い フリーウェイ とか 交通 量 が 多い 時間帯 は 怖い 怖い 、運転 したくない ！ って 言って いた ん です けど 、

その 時 の ね 、昔 の 自分 に 言って あげたい です 、

あなた が 今 運転 して いる その エリア 、めっちゃ 車 が 少ない 所 だ よ 、って 。

そんなに 安全な エリア で 怖い なんて 言って んじゃ ない わ よ 。 って 。

あなた は すごく 平和な 所 に います よ 。 って 、言いたい です 。

住み 始めて 、まだ 1ヵ月 ちょっと です けど 、やっと 少しずつ 運転 に は 慣れて きました 。

これ まで の 私 だったら 考えられない 混雑 の 中 を 毎日 運転 しています 。

でも 毎朝 、毎朝 、必ず どこ か で 事故 が 発生 して いて 、更に それ で 渋滞 が 発生 している んです けど 、

本当に 気 を つけ なきゃ いけない な と 思います ね 。

フリーウェイ の 交通 量 も そう です けど 、

街 の 中 も 全体的に すごく ゴチャゴチャ して いて いて 、なんて 表現 すれば いい の か わから ない んですけど 、

車 が 多くて 人 が 多くて 、お店 も ゴチャゴチャ していて 、

なんか 、息苦しさ を 感じる んです よね 。

さっき も 話しました けど 、どうしても 前 に 住んで いた エリア と 比べて しまう ん です が 、

慣れ ない 新しい 土地 って こと も ある でしょう けど 、

こういう 場合 って 何 シック って いう ん です か ？

あー 、モントレー の 方 は 良かった なーって 、いまだに 日々 思って います 。

この ゴチャゴチャ 感 に 慣れて ない って いう の も ある し 、

慣れ ない 暑さ も 手伝って 、息苦しい んです よね 、息 が 詰まる ような 感じ 。

海 が 見えない って いう の も 大きい んじゃ ない か なって 最近 思って います 。

そこ まで 私 、海 大好き 人間 と か じゃ なかった んです けど 、って 自分 で は 思って いたんです が 、

前 は ね 、その モントレー って 、モントレーペニンシュラ 、ペニンシュラ って 言って なんて いう ん ですっけ 、

半島 か 、モントレー 半島 、湾 に なって いて 海 が 近かった ん です 。

実際 に 住んで いた ところ は 、 Salinas って いう 海 から は 少し 中 に 入った 街 だった ん です が 、
