Escena XVI
(Están la hermana, Macario, el obispo escondido, los inquisidores, el muchacho enfermo. Macario, the Bishop hiding, the inquisitors, the sick boy)
Macario
Porfavor. Salgan todos. Necesito estar sólo con el enfermo. Please everybody leave. I need to be alone with the sick one.
(Todos salen. Macario saca una botella, la única botella del agua bendita que le queda. Everybody leaves. Macario pulls out a bottle, the only bottle of holy water left. Macario le aplica una gota de agua en la frente al muchacho. Macario applies a drop of water on the forehead of the boy) Aparece MUERTE. DEATH appears. Macario sonríe cuando aparece muerte. Macario smiles when death appears.
Macario ¡Qué bueno! Ya llegaste. Oh Good. You're here already. Pero, ¿qué haces? But what are you doing? ¡Quítate de ahí! Get away from there! Porfavor. No te pongas ahí. Don't put yourself there. Necesito tu ayuda. I need your help. ¡Quítate! Get out of there. ¡Estás fregándolo todo! You're screwing everything up!
(Macario mueve la cama alejando la cabecera de MUERTE. Macario moves the bed, moving the head of the bed away from DEATH.
Macario Acuérdate de nuestro pacto. Remember our pact. Yo te dí de comer. I gave you food. Tú me debes. You owe me.
Muerte
Te debía. I owed you. Y ya te pagué. And I already paid you. Ya llegó la hora, Macario. The time has come, Macario. Esta es la pura neta. This is the pure truth here. ¡Acéptala, Buey. Just accept it, man.
Macario ¡Traicionero! Traitor!
(Macario se asusta al escuchar los golpes en la puerta de los inquisidores y la hermana del obispo, la madre del muchacho. Macario becomes frightened upon hearing the knocking of the sister of the bishop, the mother of the boy. Se escapa por la ventana. He escapes through the window. Sale corriendo. He takes off running hacia el bosque, toward the forest)

¡Macario!
¡Macario! ¡Macario! ¡Para! ¡Detente! ¡Regresa! Stop! Halt! Come back!
¡Ya te llegó la hora! Your time has come! ¡No hay salida! There is no way out! ¡San Pedro te espera! St. Peter awaits you! ¡Gloria al Padre! ¡Gloria al Hijo! ¡Gloria al Espíritu Santo! Glory to the Father! Glory to the Son!
(Macario trata de recuperar el aire después de haber corrido un buen rato. Macario tries to get his breath back after having run a long time)

Macario.
No corras. Don't run. Tienes que enfrentar tus problemas. You have to face your problems. No te huyas, mijo. Don't flee, my son. Yo estoy aquí contigo. I am here with you.
(Macario se detiene por un segundo y parece por un momento que le va a hacer caso a Dios, Macario stop for a second and it looks like for a moment, he is going to obey God, pero cuando ve a Muerte, but when he sees Death, sale corriendo de nuevo, he takes off running again. Las luces se apagan. The lights go out)
El coro de las tres almas ¡Macario! ¡Macario! ¡Macario! (Macario se detiene de nuevo para recuperar el aire. Macario stops again to catch his breath). Aparece Satanás. Se muere de la risa. Satan appears. He is dying of laughter)
Satanás
¡Ya te agarré, desgraciado! ¡Ja!
¡Ja!
¡Ja! ¡Te fundiste, Buey! (You melted yourself. Which means, "you really messed up! ) Y ahora tienes que pagar. And now you have to pay! ¡Ja! ¡Ja! ¡Ja! (Macario suelta un grito histérico. Macario lets out an hysterical cry y sale corriendo de nuevo, and takes off running again. Satanás no se contiene. Satan can't contain himself. Está requetecontento. He is beyond content)
(Mientras el coro de las tres almas recita el padre nuestro, while the chorus of the three souls recites the Lord's Prayer, Luces alumbrando a Macario, lights on Macario.

Fin de Escena Escena XVIII (Se abren las cortinas. The curtains open. Escena de la caverna de MUERTE. Scene of Death's cavern. Velas prendidas de todos tamaños y colores. Lit candles of all sizes and colors)
Muerte Hola Macario. ¡Qué bueno que ya estás aquí! How good it is that you are finally here.
Te voy a enseñar mi dominio. I am going to show you my domain. Increíble, ¿verdad? Incredible isn't it? ¡Ves todo esto! Do you see all of this? Aquí están todas las vidas de toda la gente, de todas las almas. Here are all of the lives of all of the people, of all of the souls.
Macario O sea, ¿Estas velas son las vidas de la gente? So then, these candles are the lives of the people?
Muerte Efectivamente. Macario. That's right, Macario. Macario ¿Por qué algunas son largas mientras estas aquí son más pequeñas que parecen que en cualquier momento se van a apagar? Why are some long while these over here are smaller and look like they are going to go out at any moment?

Macario ¡No es justo! It isn't fair! ¡Yo estoy bien! I'm fine! ¿Por qué mi vela está tan pequeñita? Why is my candle so tiny? ¡No te acerques! Don't come near me! ¡No la toques! Don't touch it!
Muerte ¡Porfavor! ¡Hombre! ¡Tranquilo! Come down!
Macario ¡No! Muerte ¡Macario! ¡No puedes cambiar el destino! You can't change destiny! ¡No te puedes escapar! You can't escape! ¡Es la ley divina! It's divine law! ¡Macario! ¡Macario! ¡Macario!
