Houston We Have a Problem!

There it was... the Earth shining and bright through a cockpit window. It was this blue ball. It radiated such light it almost blinded our crew. We were sent up to drop off equipment to the International Space Station. It was a routine mission for the most part. We made our ascent into the sky from Cape Canaveral. The G-force training helped for sure. It can take a toll on your body when you are blasting off into space. On our team if I remember correctly we had three Americans and one Russian cosmonaut sent over to help cooperate with us on this mission. It was my first time going up with a cosmonaut. We got a long just fine though. My Russian wasn't that bad and as you probably might not know, all astronauts have to learn a certain level of Russian to even be able to go to the ISS. We were bringing a large robotic arm to the space station so we could help install it and then run a diagnostic check to see if it was functional. We would be stationed there with another 20 or so astronauts. The conditions were cramped and the food wasn't great. We had to eat out of these nutrition paste-tubes. While we were there we had to make sure we exercised in low gravity to make sure we didn't lose too much muscle because of being weightless. It can be fun from time to time though definitely. We would play games like putting water into the air and watching it float around until someone caught it in their mouth. You could walk on the ceiling and float around like you were a bird or something. We had had simulations before back on Earth but they were not nearly as cool as actually being in zero gravity. The best thing was when someone would crack open a bag of “Cheetos” and float them across the room at somebody. It was good times. Everything went well for the most part. We got the robotic arm installed. We did some space walks, which had some amazing views of the Earth. Until one day something crazy did occur. When out of station on a space walk a little piece of space rock pinged off of my helmet. At first I was surprised that something out there even hit me! Then another small ping and another and then everyone out there was reporting these pings of small space debris hitting off their suits. This was dangerous because if they hit you fast or hard enough they can puncture your suit and then...well you are gonna die. Luckily all that happened to me was a small crack in my air supply. At first I was freaking out and like in the movies I kept saying “Houston we have a problem!” The whole team laughed. I didn't want everything to freak out too bad. These things happen routinely and we are trained to handle things in a calm cool and collected manner. I was able to get back inside the ISS and get my suit repaired before anything more dangerous happened. It was one of my most interesting stays on the ISS for sure. We are going to depart tomorrow and I'm excited to see my family and beautiful wife again. Wish me luck!
