この コーナー で は 、アラフォー の 私 が アメリカ 人 の 若者 に 混ざって カレッジ で 勉強 する 様子 に ついて お話して います 。 まだ 今 学期 終わって いない んです けど 、 この 前 、もう 次の 学期 の クラス 登録 が ありました 。 今日 は その 話 を したい と 思います 。 うち の カレッジ は 、カリフォルニア の コミュニティカレッジ は だいたい そう だ と 思う んです けど 、

春 夏 秋 って 、3 つ の 区切り が ある のです が 、 今 授業 を やって いる の が 2021 年 春 学期 です 。

この 次 に 夏学期 、Summersemesterが あります 。 夏 は 期間 が 短くて 凝縮 されて いる 感じ です 。 クラス の セレクション も 他の 春 、秋 と 比べる と 少ない です 。

うち の カレッジ は 5 月 下旬 に 今 学期 、春 semester が 終わって 、

2 週間 くらい かな 、空いて 、夏 Semester が 6 月 の 上旬 から 始まります 。 それ が 7月 末 に 終わって 、

そこ から 3 週間 ほど 空いて 、

8月 下旬 に 秋 学期 、秋 Semeseterがスタートします。 今回 は 、夏 と 秋 の クラス を 一気に 登録 しました 。 夏 は 1 クラス 、秋 は 4 クラス とります 。 夏 に 関して は 、前 も お話 した かも しれません が 、クラス を 取ろう か すごく 迷いました 。 というのも 、我が家 は 夫 が 学校 の 先生 を している ので 、毎年 夏 は 夫 の 夏休み が すごく 長い です 。 約 2 ヶ月 です ね 。

その 休み の 間 は 、少し 長めの 旅行 に 行ったり 、まぁあ とは のんびり 過ごしている んですけど 、

パッと 思いつき で 、今日 は ちょっと ドライブ しよう 、とか 、プチ 遠出 し に 気 に なって た あの 町 に 行って みよう か 、とか 急に 思い立って 色々 する こと が あります 。 ま ぁ それ が 長い 休み の 醍醐味 と 言います か ね 、 基本 ノープラン で 、その 日 の 気分 に 合わせて やる こと 決める みたいな 。

とても 贅沢な 夏 です ね 。

そんな 感じ で 毎年 夏 を 過ごして いる ので 、

私 が クラス を 入れて しまう と 旅行 は もちろん 、自由に 思いのままに 過ごすって こと が できなく なる ので 、どうしようか なーって 考えてた んです 。 で 、さっき も 少し 話した んです が 、夏 の クラス は 期間 が 短い 分 、忙しい って 聞いて て 、 宿題 と か 課題 と か 毎日 の ように やる こと が 結構 あって 、例え 1 クラス でも 結構 大変だ よ ーって 話 なんです よ 。 だから せっかく 夫 が 休み で 、平日 に 色々 出かけられる のに 、 のびのび 楽しめないって 、 ちょっと 勿体 無い な ー みたいな 。 って 思いました 。 まあ 、 正直に 言う と 、 勉強 面倒臭い から 夏 は もう 何も し ないで 毎日 ビール 飲んで いた ー いって こと な ん です けど 、

結局 、1 クラス 、取る こと に しました 。 パブリックスピーキング の クラス な ん です けど 、 コミュニティカレッジ と か 、 ユニバーシティ と か でも 皆 ん な が 取る 必須の クラス です 。

これ また 噂 で 、あと カウンセラー とか から も 、この クラス は 夏 に 取っちゃう のが おすすめ だよ 。 って 聞いた こと が あって 、

取っちゃ おうか な と 思い 、登録 しました 。 あと は 、今学期 、まだ 終わって ない んです けど 、

想像 して いた んです が 、やっぱり 大変で 、いや 、ほんと 、大変な んです よ 。

英語 ばっか で ね 、ま 、当たり前です けど 。 いろんな こと に すごく 時間 が かかって 、

今 学期 4 クラス 取って て 、その うち 1 クラス は そんなに 宿題 や 課題 が ない 、結構 簡単な クラス で 助かって いる んです けど 、

それ でも トータル 4 クラス を 毎日 ヒーヒー 言い ながら こなしてます 。 で 、

もしも 夏 に 1 クラス 終わらせれば 、残り 3 学期 も 4 クラス ずつ 、秋 に 4 クラス 、その 次の 春 に 4 クラス 、さらに 次の 秋 に 4 クラス で 必要な 単位 が 取り 終わります 。 もしも この 夏 クラス を 取ら なければ 、残り 3 学期 の うち どっか を 5 クラス に しなければ ならない って こと なんです よ 。 今 学期 、簡単な クラス が 含まれて いる 状態 で ヒーヒー 言ってる のに 、今後 5 クラス に なった 場合 に めっちゃ 大変じゃん って 不安 しか ないです 。 2 年 で 終える って こだわら なければ 全然 伸ばせる んです けど 、 歳 も 歳 な ので 、やっぱり できる だけ 早く 進みたい なって 思って いて 。 来年 の 夏 は ね 、もしかすると 、ようやく 日本 に 一時 帰国 できる かも な ので 、来年 の 夏 は 何も 予定 を 入れず に 置いて おきたくて 、

そう 考える と 、やっぱり 今年 の 夏 に 頑張っちゃった 方が いい んじゃないか と 思いました 。 夫 に も 相談 しました が 、 ま ぁ パンデミック も 少しずつ 落ち着いて きて いる と は いえ 、まだまだ 自由に 遠く に 行くって 感じ でも なくて 、 きっと 今年 も 出かける と しても 近場 を 楽しむ 感じ に なる から 、クラス 取りたい なら 取れば いい んじゃない ？ と 背中 を 押して くれ まして 、

はい 、頑張ろう と 思います 。 パブリックスピーキングって 何 やる ん です か ー ？ きっと 取った こと ある 皆さん たくさん いらっしゃる んじゃ ない ですか ね 。

プレゼン と か です か ？

とにかく 、ゲゲゲ ！ です よ ね 。

人前 で 英語 を 話す とか 、ほんと 勘弁 して 欲しい です 。 でも 、必須 です から ね 。

そう 、ここ は アメリカ 、そして アメリカの 学校 だ から しょうがない です ね 。

私 が コミュニティカレッジ で 勉強 して いる 理由 の ひとつ は 英語 力 を 伸ばす こと な ので 、むしろ ピッタリ な クラス です ね 。

いや ー でも 緊張 する なぁ 。

全然 始まって も ない けど 、もう 緊張 する わ 。

あ 、でも 、コロナ の 影響 で 、この クラス も オンライン な んです 。

オンライン が 吉 と 出る か 、凶 と 出る か …。

また 実際 に クラス が スタート したら 、四苦八苦 している 様子 を お 伝え できれば と 思います 。 秋 学期 は 、4 クラス 中 1 クラス が in person 、 オンライン で は なくて 、 実際 に キャンパス で の 授業 です 。

とても 嬉しい んです が 、これ また 緊張 します 。 オンライン だ と 、家 で 1人 、課題 を やったり ビデオ を 見たり して 勉強 する ので 孤独 だ なって 思う 反面 、

知らない 単語 と か 出てきて も 辞書 で 調べつつ 自分 の ペース で 進められる のが 良い ところ で 、 これ が 教室 で 対面 授業 に なったら 、

先生 の 言って いる 単語 が わから ない ！ 教科 書 の 単語 が わから ない ！ って なって も 確認 する 時間 と かが 十分に なくて 自分 だけ わけ わからなくて 混乱 しちゃう んじゃないか …と か 、

ディスカッション と か が あったら 、 クラスメイト の 言って いる こと 理解 できる か な 、 と か 、 自分 が 発言 する とき に 考え を まとめて ちゃんと した 英語 で 話せる か な と か 、

恐怖 です 。

怖い ー 。

でも 、対面 授業 の 方 が 間違いなく 英語 力 は 伸びる と 思う ので 、

きっと 失敗 も たくさん する と 思います が 、前向きに 頑張ります 。 クラス 登録 に ついて なん です が 、

私 日本 で は 規模 の 小さい 短大 を 出てる だけ な ので 、

日本 の 大学 の ね 、クラス 登録 が どういう 流れ な の か と か 知ら ない ので 、日米 の 比較 が でき ない んです が 、

アメリカ の 、と 言って も カリフォルニア の コミュニティカレッジ です が 、

登録 解禁 日 が 学生 に よって 違います 。 優先 順位 が ある って 言ったら いい んですかね 、 ミリタリー の 退役 軍人 だったり 、各種 サポート プログラム を 受けて いる 場合 、ホームレス だったり とか 低 所得 者 の サポート プログラム とか が 、優先 度 が 高くて 、

あと は カレッジ 内 の 生徒 会 みたいな やつ に 入って たり 、教授 の 助手 とか 手伝い とか を やって たり 、そういう 学生 たち が 次 、

そこ から は これ まで の 成績 です ね 、取得 した 単位 数 とか 成績 が 高い 順 で 優先度 が 決まって いきます 。 優先 順位 が どう 関わって くる か と いう と 、

クラス に よって は クラス の キャパシティ に 対して 登録 したい 学生 の 数 が 多い こと が ある ので 、 登録 が 遅い と 受け たくて も 受けられない って こと が ある んです 。 同じ クラス でも スケジュール が いくつか あって 、人気 の 曜日 、時間帯 は すぐに 埋まっちゃう とか 、 あと は 同じ クラス でも 先生 が 何 人 か いて 、

やっぱり 人気 の 先生 、不人気 の 先生 って いる ので 、人気 の 先生 は 早く 埋まって いきます 。 先生 の 人気 度 に ついて は 、生徒 が 先生 を 評価 する ウェブサイト が あります 。 カレッジ の 名前 と 先生 の 名前 を 入れる と 、これ まで その 先生 の クラス を 受けた 学生 が 書き込んだ レビュー 、口コミ です ね 、が 表示 されて 、 その 先生 が どんな スタイル の 授業 を する の か とか 、生徒 と コミュニケーション を しっかり 取る タイプ な の か とか 、

成績 の 付け 方 は 厳しい の か 甘い の か とか 、

色々 書き込まれて いる んです よ 。 いや ー 、 先生 に とって は 大変な 世の中 です ね 。

私 も その サイト を 見て どの 先生 の クラス を 取ろう かって 参考 に しました が 、 注意 しなければ ならない の は 、必ずしも 人気 の ★ の 数 が 多い 先生 が 自分 に とって も 合う 先生 か と いう と そう で は ない って こと です 。 例えば 、評価 が 高くて も コメント を 読む と 、ただ 宿題 の 量 が 少なくて 楽 とか 、テスト が 簡単で 楽に A が 取れる とか 、

そういう 内容 って こと が よく あります 。 ま ぁね 、それ も 嬉しい ポイント です が 、

私的に は 、こっち の 質問 に ちゃんと 答えて くれる 先生 とか 、授業 の 構成 が しっかり している 先生 とか 、そういう 先生 が いい んです よね 。

だから 一概に 、その 先生 評価 サイト を 丸呑み して い いって こと で は ないです ね 。

今回 の 登録 で は 、

その 夏 の パブリックスピーキング の クラス が 10 クラス くらい あった の か な 、 もっと か な 。

で 、この 先生 が いい ！ って その 先生 評価 サイト でも 人気 で 、あと 周り から も その 同じ 先生 が いい らしい って 事前 情報 が あった 狙い の 先生 が いた んです よ 。 私 の 登録 解禁 日 は 最優先 の 生徒 の 解禁 日 から 数えて 5 日 後 くらい だった んです けど 、

さすが 、ダントツ 人気 と いう だけ あって 、その 先生 の クラス は もう 埋まって しまって いました 。 でも です ね 、埋まって いて も 「 wait list 」と いう 、キャンセル 待ち の リスト に 入る こと が できて 、

既に 登録 した 人 の 中 で キャンセル が 出る と 繰り上がる 仕組み が あります 。 私 は その wait list の 1 番目 に 入って 、で ね 、数日 後 に 既に 空き が 出て 、本 登録 できました 。 そう 、だから その ダントツ 人気 の 先生 の クラス を 受ける こと が できます 。 やった ー 。

どんな 先生 だろう 。 楽しみ です 。

その他 の クラス で 早く 登録 し なきゃって 少し 焦った の は 、 先ほど も お 話した 、 秋 学期 の 唯一 の in person 、 対面 授業 の クラス です 。 ファイナンシャル ・アカウント の クラス な んです けど 、

対面 授業 も オンライン も 両方 あって 選べる ように なって いる んです 。

でも 対面 授業 は コロナ 関連 の ルール も あって 、キャパ が 普段 の 50％ と かな の かな ？ とても 制限 されて て 、 この クラス に 限らず 、私 に 関係ない 色んな クラス で そう なんです が 、

「対面 の 方 が いい 人 は 早めに 登録 する ように ！ すぐに 埋まっちゃ うよ ！ 」って アナウンス が カレッジ 側 から も 出て いました ね 。 その クラス も 無事 登録 する こと が できて 、

結果 、希望 通り 夏 1 クラス 、秋 4 クラス を 登録 できました 。 日本 の 大学 も 同じ 感じ です か ？

登録 日 の 優先 順位 と か ある んです か ね ？

なんか ただ 登録 する だけ なのに 、少し 前 から 先生 の リサーチ して 、予定 確認 して とかって やってて 、ちょっと 疲れました 。 はい 、今回 は カリフォルニア ・コミュニティカレッジ の クラス 登録 に ついて お 話して みました 。
