カジュアルな 観光 客 も いれば 、結構 カーメル や ビッグサー は お金持ち エリア でも あるので 、めちゃんこ 豪華な 別荘 が あったり も して です ね 、

リッチな 人 たち が 集まって くる 場所 で も あります 。 高級 ホテル と か 高級 レストラン と か は 接客 も しっかり して いる かも しれない です けど 、

それ だけ で は なく 周り の カジュアルな レストラン や カフェ とか の 接客 レベル も あげて 、

エリア 全体 で 「気持ち良い 接客 が 受け れる エリア 」みたいな の を 目指して ね 、「 Monterey Quality 」とかって 勝手に 呼んじゃったり して 。 どうどう ？

ま ぁ ここ から は 得意の 妄想 が 広がる んです けど 、

ちょっと 地域 の chambers of commerce 、商工 会議所 と か ？ なんか そういう ところ と か と 提携 と かして 、

認定 システム を 設けて 、高い 接客 クオリティ の お店 に は certificate みたいな の を 与える とか さ 、

いや 、妄想 です けど 。

でも 、 そういう の 好きな ん じゃない の か な ー 、 この 辺 の人 は と 思って 。

あと は 比較的 日本 人 に 対して 好意的に 感じて くれている 地域 で も ある と 思っていて 、

歴史 的に ね 、 日本人 や 日 系人 が 農業 で 成功 を おさめて いたり 、 そい う いう の も 相 待って 、

ジャパニーズカスタマーサービス の 一部 を 取り入れた コンサル 、トレーニング って まあまあ 響き 的に 悪く ない か なって 思う んです 。 私 は 日本 で 人並み です が 、学生 時代 居酒屋 とか 、飲食店 で アルバイト を して きて 、

短大 で は ホスピタリティー とか を 、不真面目な 学生 でした が 一応 専攻 していて 、

社会 人 1 年 目 は ホテル に も 就職 して 、

その後 は IT 業界 に 長く いました が 、テクサポ とか で エージェント /エンド ユーザー ともに 対応してきた 経験 も あり 、 一応 、カスタマーサービス 、接客 の 知識 も スキル も 心得て いる と 自負 して いまして 、

接客 業 得意 か 不得意 か と言ったら 、かなり 得意な 方 だ と 思う んです よね 。

ほら 、いい んじゃ ない か なー と 思って 。

もちろん 、日本 の 接客 スタイル を そのまま アメリカ に 持ってきて も 上手く いかない こと も わかって いて 、

日本 で は 細やか や 心遣い で 気持ち良い 、ありがたい って 思わ れ る こと も アメリカ だ と too much って 思わ れ る かも しれ ない し 、 日本 の 象徴 で も ある お辞儀 を アメリカ で やったら 、いやいや 、もっと カジュアルに いこう ぜ ！ って なる だろう し 。

その 辺り は 、上手く アメリカ 文化 も アダプト して です けど 、

まずは 、さっき も 言いました が 、難しい カスタマーサービス 云々 で は なくて 、 本当に 基本 的な ちょっと した ところ から の 意識 改革 なんです よ 。

レストラン だけ で は なくて 、接客 業 全体 で 基本 の 行動 を ちょっと だけ 見直せば 、

すごく 変わる と 思う んです よ ね 。

スーパー の レジ で は 、お客さん の 方 を 見て お釣り を 渡す とか 、会計 を しながら 他の スタッフ と 関係ない こと 話さない と か 、

これ ね 、信じられ ない と 思います けど 、日常茶飯事 な んです 。 お 会計 の 間 、一 度 も チラッと も こっち を 見 ないで 商品 を スキャン して いって 、

「いくら です 。」 って ボソって 言って 、 こっち が お金 を 渡す 時 も 全然 こっち を 見 ず 、

お釣り も 他 を 見 ながら 手 だけ で 渡して くる みたいな 。

何 じゃ それ ーーーーー ！ って 。

あと は 、アメリカ に きた ばかりの 英語 が わからない 人 ある ある だ と 思う んです けど 、

レジ で お 会計 中 に 何 か 話しかけられてる ！ と 思って 、わからない ！ 聞き 取れ ない ！ なに なに ？ って 思って る と 、

私 に 話しかけて る んじゃ なくて 、隣 に いる 別の スタッフ と 「ランチ どう する ー 」って いう 話してたり 、全然 関係ない おしゃべり を している だけ だったって いう 、 いやいや いやいや 、 それ 接客 中 に 話す 内容 じゃない でしょって いう 。 なんか 、本当に 基本 の こと なんです よ 、

日本 も ね 、たまに 行き過ぎた 感覚 を 持っている 人 が いて 、

「お 客 様 は 神様 だ ！ 」みたいな 、昔 あった じゃないですか 、百貨店 で 何か トラブル が あって 、店員さん に 土下座 を させた 客 が いる とか 。

それ は ね 、極端な こと で 、

そこ まで お客さん を 崇めろ と は 言って いないです けど 、 でも 私 の 考え と しては 、やっぱり お客さん が 来て くれて こそ の ビジネス で 、できるだけ 丁寧な 対応 を する 、お客さん の ため を 思って 行動する って 大切だ と 思う んです よね 。 大切 って いう か 、何度 も 言います が 、基本 だ と 思って います 。 丁寧な 対応 を した 方 が 、接客 している 方 だって いい 気持ち で 仕事 が できる んです よね 。

その 基本 の 感覚 を 持って いる 人 も いて 、気持ち の 良い 対応 を している 人 も いる んです けど 、全然 やる気 ない 素っ気ない 対応 を している 人 も 多くて 目立つ んです よね 。

レストラン と か 、お店 と か 、働き始める 時 に トレーニング と かし ない んですか ね 。

まあ 郷 に いれば 郷 に 従え で 、

アメリカ に 来て から 微妙 だ なって いう 接客 を よく 目 に します が 、 まあ 、仕方ない か 。 って 慣れて きた と いう か 、半ば 諦めて います が 、 でも 今回 この ビジネス プラン を 考える 課題 が あって 、これ を 考えて たら 、

アメリカ 生活 と は 切っても 切れない 大きな 大きな 大きな 壁 、英語 に ついて お話している コーナー です 。

今日 は です ね 、たまに お 話 する 「最近 知った 勘違い シリーズ 」です 。

私 、感覚 という か 、パッと 聞いた 感じ 、パッと 見た 感じ で 何となく 覚えちゃう こと が 多くて 、よく 勘違い した まま 覚えている こと が あります 。 そして 本当の こと を 知った 時 に 、

え ！ そう だった の ！ と 驚く んです よ ね 。

今回 は 3 つ あります ！ まずは 、 Hoarder です 。

ちょっと 私 の 発音 で English Speaking の リスナー の 皆様 に 伝わって いる か わかりません が 、 Hoarder ホーダー 、 物 を 捨てられ なくて どんどん 増えてっちゃって 、 ゴミ 屋敷 に 住んで いる ような人 の こと です 。 最近 ネットフリックス ？ アマゾンプライム ？ どっち だっけ か な 。 ホーダー の ドキュメンタリー と いう か 、家 を 片付ける って いう 番組 を 見た んです が 、 その 時 に 発覚 した んです 。

ホーダー って 、そんな 感じ の 単語 が ある って こと は 知って たんです が 、 ずっと 私 、ホールダー だ と 思ってた んです よ 。

hold、保つ です ね 。 holder。

ほら 、普通に 意味 通じ ない ？ make sense でしょ 。

物 が 捨て れ ない 、物 を ずっと 保持 しちゃう 。 holdしちゃ う 、holder 。

ここ で はっきり 証明 された 、 私 の r と l の リスニング 力 の 低 さ 。

正しい 単語 hoarder は r が 入って て 、勘違い して いた 方 、holder は l です ね 。

たぶん 、英語 できる 人 から したら 、

何で こんな の 間違える ねん ！ って 感じ なんだろう な ー 。

でも ね 、今回 の 場合 は 、holder でも 十分 意味 が 通じちゃう のが 悪い んだ と 思う の 。

紛らわし ーーーーー ！

でも 勉強 に なりました 。 ひと つ 偉く なった わ 。

次 ！

これ は 前 も 話した こと ある のです が 、

fulfill と いう 単語 。

満たす 、という 意味 です ね 。

条件 を 満たす 、希望 や 要求 を 満たす の ような 動詞 でも 使う し 、

feel fulfilled で 満足 する的 な 、 満たされた 〜 的な 意味 でも 使う ん です が 、

前 まで ね 、fulfill な の か 、fillfull な の か ずっと 混乱 してた んです よ 。

fullって 満タンって こと でしょ 、だから fil が 満タン まで 溜まって 、filfull で 満たす だー ！ なんて イメージ が あった んです けど 、

正しく は ful が 先 、で fulfill が 正しい んです 。

で 、これ に ついて は です ね 、以前 ちゃん と 理解 しまして 、もう 混乱 して いない 、 混乱 して いない はずだった んです よ 。 でも 先日 、更 なる 紛らわしい 単語 に 遭遇 しました 。 それ は 、fruitful です 。

フルーツ フルです 。 意味 は 、想像 し やすい んです が 、実り 多い 、って いう 意味 なんです 。 実り 多い 、豊 な 、みたいな 。

私 ね 、英語 の クラス で エッセイ と か 何か 文章 を 書く 時 、

そういう 充実 した 何 ちゃ ら と か 、 充実 感 を 感じて 〜 みたいな 表現 を する 時 に 辞書 で 言葉 を 探して 、

そこ で まず fulfill に 出会った わけです よ 。

で 、ああ あ 、満たさ れ たって こと で fulfilled みたいな 感じ で 使う んだ ーって 思って 、それから ずっと 結構 fulfill 使って たんです けど 、 あれ 、もし かして 、私 が 使い たかった 単語 は fruitfull な ので はない か ！ と 思えて きて 、

しかも さ 、見た目 も 発音 も 何となく 似て る でしょ 。

fulfillfruitful。

で 、そう な の 。

あんなに fulfill で 、ful は 前 、fill が 後ろ 、ful は 前 。 前 。 前 。 って 覚えた のに 、

fruitful は ful が 後ろ な の 。

ま ぁ 一般的な 形容詞 です から ね 。

と いう ね 、

聞いて いる 方 から したら 何の こっちゃって 感じ かも しれません が 、 1人 で 混乱 した …と いう 話 でした 。

うち の 旦那さん に この 話 を した ところ 、

fulfillは 感情 的な 充実 、満たさ れ 具合い です ね 、

一方 で fruitful は 実 、プロダクティブ 的な 充実 と 説明 されて 、納得 しました 。 なるほど 。

そして ね 、しっかり 英 英 辞書 で 英語 で 意味 を 確認する ように ！ と の アドバイス も もらいました 。 確かに 。

さらっと 日本 語 で 意味 を 確認 した だけ で は 混乱 しちゃ います ね 、これ ね 。 そして ラスト ！

ラスト は 読み方 、発音 を 勘違い して いた 単語 なんです が 、

interpreter通訳 です 。

これ は ね 、英語 が 第 二 言語 と して 暮らして いる と 結構 目 に したり 耳 に したり する 単語 、メジャー な 単語 だ と 思う んです けど 、

そんな よく 聞く 単語 な のに 、勘違い してました 。 私 。

正しく は インタープリター なんです が 、インターパター だ と 思って たんです 。

ず ーーーーーーーーっと 。 何 年 も 。

最近 です 、正しい 発音 知った の 。

何 か に 書いて あって も 何となく サラッと しか 見て なくて 今 まで 。

単語 の スペル を これ まで しっかり 注意 して 見た こと が なくて 、

最近 、何か に interpreterって 打ち込んだ 時 に 、interpeterって 間違って 打つ と スペル 間違ってる よって いう 赤い 波線 が 表示されて 、 いやいや 、間違って いる はず は ない ！ と いう 謎 の 自信 が あって 、

何で だ ろ 〜 と 思って

しっかり と 調べたら

インターパター で は なく 、インタープリター だった と いう 事実 が 発覚 した わけです 。

びっくり 。

そう 、ここ でも やっぱり r な わけです よ 。

インタープリター の プリ の r が 聞き 取れて なかった んです 。

驚き 。
