Diary of a Madman (I, II)
今天 晚上 ， 很 好 的 月光 。
我 不见 他 ， 已 是 三十多年 ； 今天 见 了 ， 精神 分外 爽快 。
I have not seen him for more than 30 years, but today, I see him and I am in high spirits.
才 知道 以前 的 三十多年 ， 全是 发昏 ； 然而 须 十分 小心 。
I realized that the past 30 years or so had been a blur, but I had to be very careful.
不然 ， 那 赵家 的 狗 ， 何以 看 我 两眼 呢 ？
Otherwise, why did the dog of the Chiu family look at me twice?
我怕 得 有理 。
I'm justified in my fear.
今天 全没 月光 ， 我 知道 不妙 。
There's no moonlight today, and I know it's bad.
早上 小心 出门 ， 赵贵 翁 的 眼色 便怪 ： 似乎 怕 我 ， 似乎 想害 我 。
In the morning, when I went out carefully, Zhao Guiweng looked at me strangely, as if he was afraid of me, as if he wanted to do me harm.
还有 七八个 人 ， 交头接耳 的 议论 我 ， 张着 嘴 ， 对 我 笑 了 一笑 ； 我 便 从头 直冷到 脚根 ， 晓得 他们 布置 ， 都 已 妥当 了 。
There were seven or eight other people talking about me, and they smiled at me with their mouths open; so I was cold from head to toe, knowing that they had done everything.
我 可 不怕 ， 仍旧 走 我 的 路 。
I'm not afraid. I'll go on my way.
前面 一伙 小孩子 ， 也 在 那里 议论 我 ； 眼色 也 同 赵贵 翁 一样 ， 脸色 也 铁青 。
我 想 我 同 小孩子 有 什么 仇 ， 他 也 这样 。
I don't think I have any grudge against children, and he is like that.
忍不住 大声 说 ，“ 你 告诉 我 ！
” 他们 可 就 跑 了 。
我 想 ： 我同 赵贵 翁 有 什么 仇 ， 同 路上 的 人 又 有 什么 仇 ； 只有 廿年 以前 ， 把 古久 先生 的 陈年 流水 簿子， 踹 了 一脚 ， 古久 先生 很 不 高兴 。
I thought to myself, "What enmity have I with Zhao Guiweng, and what enmity do I have with the people on the road?" It was only twenty years ago that I kicked Mr. Kuju's aged running book, and Mr. Kuju was very unhappy about it.
赵贵 翁 虽然 不 认识 他 ， 一定 也 听到 风声 ， 代 抱不平 ； 约定 路上 的 人 ， 同 我作 冤 对 。
Though Zhao Guiweng did not know him, he must have heard the wind, and he was indignant on my behalf; and he made an appointment with a man on the road to do me injustice.
但是 小孩子 呢 ？
那 时候 ， 他们 还 没有 出世 ， 何以 今天 也 睁 着 怪 眼睛 ， 似乎 怕 我 ， 似乎 想害 我 。
They were not born then, so why do they look at me today with strange eyes, as if they were afraid of me, as if they wanted to do me harm?
这真教 我 怕 ， 教 我 纳罕 而且 伤心 。
It really scares me, it makes me wonder and it breaks my heart.
我 明白 了 。
这是 他们 娘老子 教 的 ！
That's what their mothers taught them!
