아버지는 큰고모 딸 례장감으로 북조선에서 가장 인기가 있던 붉은 바닥에 함박꽃 무늬가 있는 뽀푸링 이불감을 이미 준비해 놓았고 어머니는 평소 잘 알던 상점 판매원에게 평양에서 사기 힘든 과자와 빵까지 뒤구멍으로 부탁하여 구해 놓았다.

우리 친가 쪽으로는 우리 아버지가 가장 잘 되였고 평양에서 살고 있기 때문에 신포 큰댁 식구들과 큰고모댁 식구들은 우리가 가면 손부터 쳐다볼 수밖에 없었다. 그래서 더욱 선물에 신경이 쓰였다. 우리는 입던 옷도 챙기고 여러 가지 선물 거리를 마련하려고 애썼다.

방학 기간 중에는 집에 내려가는 지방 학생들이 많고 기차편도 하루에 몇 번 안되기 때문에 기차표를 구하기도 힘들었다. 할 수 없이 아버지가 잘 아는 평양역 일군에게 부탁하여 침대칸 기차표를 구했다.

떠나기 전에 신포 큰 아버지댁에 우리가 몇일날 그곳에 도착한다고 전보를 쳤다. 배낭과 가방에 준비한 선물을 넣어 짊어지고 평양역으로 나갔다. 부모님은 큰딸의 첫 려행이 걱정되는지 몇 번씩이나 주의 사항을 되풀이 하고 역 개찰구 까지 전송 나왔다. 기차는 저녁 7시 출발이였지만 일찌감치 나가 자리를 잡으려고 출발 30분 전에 현수의 손을 잡고 기차로 나갔다.

표에 기재된 대로 침대칸을 찾아 오르려는데 침대칸 문 앞에 서 있던 녀자 안내원이 “지금 단체 손님이 있어서 더 탈 수 없으니 다른 칸으로 가라”고 무뚝뚝하게 말하는게 아닌가. 나는 현수를 이끌고 이 칸에서 저 칸으로 자리를 잡기 위해 갈팡질팡 하면서 시간을 보냈다. 기차 출발 시간이 촉박해지자 하는 수 없이 일반 칸에 올랐다.

일반칸에는 발 들여 놓을 틈도 없이 사람으로 꽉 차 기차가 움직일 때마다 이리 밀리고 저리 밀렸다. 침대칸 표를 가지고도 일반칸에 타서 그 고생을 하자니 정말 억울했지만 기차 렬차원의 말이 곧 법이기 때문에 어쩔 수가 없었다.

기차가 평양을 벗어나 승호, 강동을 거쳐 성천에 도착하자 승객이 많이 빠져 나갔다. 겨우 자리 하나를 잡아 현수를 먼저 앉혔다. 밤 동안 내내 어둠속을 달리다가 새벽이 가까워지자 다시 자리 하나가 나서 나도 앉았다. 그동안 시골 사람들의 큰 보따리에 치이면서 뜬눈으로 밤을 밝혀 몸이 지칠대로 지쳐 있었기 때문에 앉자마자 곧 잠으로 빠져들었다.

차내가 갑자기 소란스러워져 눈을 뜨니 이동판매대가 밥곽을 팔고 있었다. 밥곽표는 기차표를 구입할 때 20전을 내고 사는데 막상 밥곽을 살때는 밥곽표와 함께 다시 50전을 내야했다. 밥을 먹어야 할 승객은 많고 이동판매대가 파는 밥곽은 얼마 안되니 승객들은 판매원 주위에 몰려들어 서로 돈을 판매원 코 앞에 디밀며 먼저 달라고 야단이였다. 우리도 이 밥곽을 사지 못하면 아침을 굶어야 하고, 또 기차표와 같이 구입한 밥곽표도 무효가 될 판이였다. 더구나 밥곽은 거의 다 팔리고 한줄 밖에 남지 않아 아직 사지 못한 승객들은 서로 밀치고 싸움까지 하며 아귀다툼을 벌렸다.

나도 이 싸움판에 끼여들어 필사적으로 판매원의 손에 강제로 돈을 쥐어 주며 ‘여기 달라요' 라고 소리쳐서 겨우 밥곽 두 개를 샀다. 힘들여 산 밥곽이지만 그 질은 너무도 형편없었다. 얇은 나무 곽 안에는 밀쌀밥과 염동태 한 토막, 무 오가리, 김치 몇쪽의 반찬이 들어있었는데 맛이 없어서 목에 넘기기조차 힘들었다.

이 기차는 평양역에서 표를 살 때는 분명히 평양-함흥-신포-라진 으로 가는 직행렬차라고 해서 직행표값을 지불하고 구입했는데 타고보니 역마다 섰다. 하도 이상하여 안내원에게 물었더니 완행이라고 한다. 그런데다가 우리가 가야 할 목적지인 신포역은 그대로 통과하므로 신포 전에 서는 흥남역에서 내려 다른 기차로 갈아타고 가야 한다고 했다. 분통이 터졌지만 모든 게 다 이런 식이니 어쩔 도리가 없었다.
