Un anno da ricordare

Con la stessa onestà con cui si allenava duramente, Bruce molto presto prese atto del fatto che proseguire l'università non era tra i suoi obiettivi. È la primavera del 1964 quando lascia la University of Washington senza aver portato a termine gli studi. Non sappiamo se in questa decisione fosse stato influenzato dal viaggio fatto a Hong Kong qualche mese prima, nel corso del quale aveva rivisto la famiglia d'origine dopo quattro anni, ma certo è che questo cambiamento sembra liberare nuove energie. Il 1964 è un anno importantissimo per lui. Il suo corpo scattante, forte, pieno di energia ha più che mai bisogno di esprimersi. Lasciata Seattle, la città di Oakland, California, diventa la sua nuova meta. Qui va inizialmente ad abitare con James Yimm Lee, uno dei grandi pionieri delle arti marziali in America. Il fatto che James Lee avesse presentato a Bruce un personaggio come Ed Parker ebbe immediatamente delle conseguenze. Parker era un vero e proprio “ricercatore” nelle arti marziali. La sua instancabile curiosità, la voglia di far conoscere in Occidente le preziose discipline orientali e un carisma fuori dal comune trovarono la loro vetrina ideale nel Long Beach International Karate Championships, un torneo di sua invenzione in cui venivano invitati i migliori talenti di tutto il mondo.

A concludere in bellezza il 1964 contribuì anche il matrimonio – osteggiato dalla madre di lei – con Linda Emery a Seattle. Linda aveva conosciuto Bruce all'università, e in breve tempo era diventata una delle sue allieve più devote. Oggi molti dei libri che parlano di Bruce fanno riferimento a sue interviste o riportano sue introduzioni. In un certo senso Linda è stata la sacerdotessa laica del culto di Lee, anche se come accade spesso in questi casi, molti particolari della vita di questo genio delle arti marziali sono stati edulcorati. In quegli stessi mesi del 1964 Linda rimase incinta di Brandon, che sarebbe nato il primo di febbraio dell'anno seguente, ossia, come già detto, l'ultimo giorno dell'anno del Drago secondo il calendario cinese. Per comunicare la sua gioia Bruce spedì a parenti e amici una cartolina di partecipazione, in cui era annotato il peso di Brandon (tre chili e novecento grammi) e il suo stato di ottima salute.

In quella stessa settimana morì il padre di Bruce, Hoi Chuen, e Bruce dovette correre a Hong Kong lasciando la puerpera e il neonato a casa. Dalle lettere traspare non poca apprensione per lo stato di salute di entrambi, e il desiderio di mostrare la città asiatica – che Bruce sentiva ancora come la sua casa – alla famiglia il più presto possibile.
