むかし むかし 、 室町 の 越後屋 八郎 右 衛 門 の 店 に 出入り して いる人間 に 、 弥 五郎 と いう 荷 担ぎ が いました 。 ある 暑い 日 の 事 、弥五郎 は 松戸 郷 から 室町 の 越後屋 まで 、白木綿 を 運んで い ました 。 その 途中 、本所 中 の 郷 (→今 の 浅草 )という ところ に さしかかる と 、ある お寺 の 大きな 木 の 下 に 石 の お地蔵さん あった ので 、弥五郎 は 、「ああ 、ちょうど いい 木陰 が ある ぞ 。 お 地蔵 さま 、ちょいと 休ま せて もらい ます よ 」と 、一休み した のです が 、あまりに も 疲れて いた ので 、そのまま すっかり 眠り 込んで しまった のです 。 さて 、弥五郎 が ふと 目 を 覚ます と 、もう すっかり 日 が 傾いて いて 、通り に は 人気 が ありませ ん でした 。 「いけ ねえ ！ 寝 過ごした ！ 」弥五郎 は すぐ に 出発 しよう と 、そば に 置いた はずの 荷物 を 探した のです が 、どうした 事か 荷物 が ない のです 。 「 しまった ！ 荷物 を 盗まれた ！ 」あわてた 弥 五郎 は 、近く の お 寺 に 飛び込んで 、「すみません ！ おれ の 荷物 、白木 綿 の 反物 を 持ち去った 者 を 見 ませ ん でした か ！ 」と 、たずねました が 、お坊さん は 気の毒 そうな 顔 を しながら 、「さあ 、そういう 者 は 見なかった ねえ 」と 、言う のです 弥五郎 は 仕方なく 、手ぶら の まま 室町 の 越後屋 へ 帰る と 、今まで の 訳 を 話しました が 、「何 だって ？ 昼寝 を して いて 荷物 を 持って いかれた だって ！ はん 。 そんな マヌケ な 話 を 誰 が 信じる もん か 。 おおかた 、勝手に 売り払って 博打 に でも 使った んだろう 。 まあ 、どっち に しろ 、無くなった 荷物 の 代金 は 弁償 して もらう よ 」と 、言われて 、弥五郎 は すっかり 困って しまい ました 。 弁償 しよう に も 、反物 は 五百 万 も あった ので 、そんなに たくさんの 白木 綿 を 弥五郎 一人 で 弁償 出来る はず が ありませ ん 。 荷 担ぎ の 元締め に も 相談 して みました が 、元締め の 生活 も 楽で は ない ので 、代わりに 弁償 する 事 は 出来ませんでした 。 「思えば 、自分 が 油断 して 寝込んで しまった の が いけなかった な 。 この上 は 、死んで おわび を する しか ない か 」そこ で 弥五郎 は 、親しい 友人 に 最後の 別れ を 言い に 行った のです 。 する と その 友人 は 、弥五郎 に こう 言い ました 。 「この マヌケ ！ お前 が 死んで も 、残さ れた 元締め や 家族 や 親類 に 迷惑 が かかる だけ だろう 。 それ より も 、死ぬ 覚悟 が ある の なら 、南 町 奉行所 の 大岡 さま に 訴えて みろ 。 忙しい お方 だ から 、ただの 町人 が 行って も 簡単に は 会って くれない だろう が 、一歩も 動かず 何日も 死ぬ気で 訴えりゃ 、その内に 大岡さま が 直々に お取り調べ と なって 、万事 うまく 治めて くださる さ 」弥五郎 は それ を 聞く と 、大喜びで 奉行所 へ 行き 、大きな 門 の 前 で 声 を 張り上げて 言い ました 。 「私 は 室町 の 越後屋 さん に 出入り している 、荷担ぎ の 弥五郎 と 申す 者 で ございます ！ 本所 中 の 郷 の 石 地蔵 の 前 で 居眠り を していた ところ 、大事な 荷物 を 何者 か に 持ち去られ て しまい ました ！ 越後屋 さん は 反物 を 弁償 しろ と おっしゃいました が 、五百 反 もの 白木 綿 を 弁償 出来る あて も ありませ ん ！ この上 は 入水 して おわび を と 決心 し ました が 、私 が 死ねば 責任 は 荷担ぎ の 元締め に ふりかかって しまい ます ！ お 忙しい と は 思い ます が 、どうか 大岡 さま じきじき の お取り調べ を お願い申しあげます ！ お 聞き届け いただけ ない 時 は 、身 を 投げて 死ぬ 覚悟 で ございます ！ 」友だち の 言った 通り 、ただ の 町人 の 弥五郎 が 行って も 、なかなか 越前 に は 取り次いで もらえ ませ ん でした 。 しかし 、弥五郎 は 三日 の 間 、何も 食べずに 座り込んで 頑張っている と 、役人 が やっと 、弥五郎の 事 を 越前 の 耳 に 入れた のです 。 する と 越前 は 、やって いた 仕事 を 中断 して 、「人 の 命 を 救う 事 より 、重い 仕事 は ある まい 」と 、さっそく 弥五郎 を 呼んで 、事 の 次第 を 詳しく 聞いて くれた のです 。 越前 は 弥五郎 の 話 を 聞き終わる と 、少し 考えて こう 言い ました 。 「ふむ 、なるほど 、あい わかった 。 地蔵 菩薩 と いえば 国土 を 守る 仏 である 。 その方 は 地蔵 に 預ければ 安心 と 思い 、荷 を 下ろして 休んだ のであろう 。 その方 の 油断 に も 責任 が ある が 、地蔵 とも あろう 者 が 目の前 で 盗み を 働く 者 を 見て見ぬふり を する とは けしからん 。 さっそく 縄 を うち 、引っ捕らえて 取り調べ を せねばならん 。 あるいは この 地蔵 こそ 、盗人 と つるんで 悪事 を 働いて いる の かも しれぬ ぞ 」それ を 聞いた 弥五郎 は 、(地蔵 さま が 悪い と は 。 ・・・こ の お奉行さま 、大丈夫 かな ？ )と 、思い ました が 、ここ まで くれば 、全て を 越前 に 任せる しか ありませ ん 。 やがて 越前 の 命令 に より 、お地蔵さん は 縄 で ぐるぐる巻き に さ れ 、大八車 に 乗せられて 両国 の 方 へ と ガラガラ と 引かれて いきました 。 この 、越前 が お地蔵さん を お取り調べ に なる という 話 は たちまち 評判 に なり 、江戸 中 から 町民 たち が ぞろぞろ と 集まって きました 。 やがて お地蔵さん は 奉行所 に 到着し 、ついてきた 野次馬たち も 大八車 の あと に ついて 奉行所に 入っていきました 。 さて 、お 白 州 に 引き出さ れた お 地蔵 さん に 、越前 は 恐い 顔 を して 言い ました 。 「その方 、人々 から 南無 地蔵 大菩薩 と 尊敬 を うけ 、人々 を 慈悲 にて 救わ ねば ならぬ 身 で あり ながら 、目の前 で 盗み を 働く 者 を 見過ごす とは 不埒 千万 である 。 盗み を 知って いて 止め ぬ は 、盗人 と 同じ である ぞ 。 さあ 、今 すぐ 盗賊 の 事 を 白状 いたせ 。 さもなくば 、入牢 申しつける ぞ ！ 」「・・・・・・」越前 は お 地蔵 さん の 返事 を 待ち ました が 、むろん 、石 の お地蔵さん は 返事 を し ませ ん 。 さて 、事の次第 を 見物していた 野次馬たち は 、この おかしな やり取り に あきれて 、ひそひそ と 話しはじめました 。 「大岡 さま は 、いったい 何 の つもり だ ？ 」「まさか 本当に 、お地蔵さま を 罰する つもりだろうか ？ 」する と 、その ひそひそ 話 を 聞いて 、越前 が 言い ました 。 「この 者 たち は 何 じゃ ！ お白州 に 勝手気ままに 入り 込み 、吟味 を 見物 する とは 不届き千万 。 前後 の 門 を 閉じよ ！ 一 人 も 逃す な ！ 」さあ 、野次馬 たち は びっくり です 。 みんな は 名前 や 住所 を 調べられる と 、 いったん は 家 に 帰して くれました が 、 あと で きつい お 仕置 き が ある ぞ と 、 全員 が きびしく 言い渡された の です 。 それ から 半月 ほど たって 、奉行所 から お達し が ありました 。 《 奉行 所 に 勝手に 入り 込む こと は 不届きである 。 重罪 を 申し付けて も よい が 、もと は 白木 綿 の 吟味 から 始まった 事 ゆえ 、白木 綿 一 反 の 罰金 で 許す 事 に する 。 三 日 の うち に 持参 いたせ 》 野次馬 たち は 、 牢屋 に 入れられる ので は ない か と 思って いた ので 、 そんな 事 で 済む のならば と 、 みんな ほっと 胸 を なでおろし ながら 、 奉行 所 へ 白木 綿 を 持って 行きました 。 こうして 三 日 の うち に 、白木 綿 の 反物 が 山 と 積み あげられた のです 。 そこ で 越前 は 、弥五郎 を 呼んで きて 尋ねました 。 「弥 五郎 よ 。 この 中 から 、盗まれた 反物 を 見分ける 事 が 出来る か ？ 」 「 はい 。 盗まれた 反物 は 、しかと 覚えて い ます 」そこ で 弥五郎 が 反物 を 調べて いく と 、中 に 二 反 だけ 、盗まれた 反物 が 混じって いた のです 。 する と 越前 は 、その 反物 を 持って きた 町人 に 、「これ を 、どこ で 買い求めた のだ ？ 」と 、尋ねて 、さらに 売り主 を 問い 正した ところ 、本所 表町 に 住む 者 が 盗賊 と 判明 した のです 。 こうして 盗まれた 反物 は 、そっくりそのまま 戻ってきました 。 越前 は 弥五郎 に 反物 を 渡して 、こう 言い ました 。 「これ は その方 に 返す ゆえ 、今後 は 油断 して 、地蔵 に 苦労 を かけて は ならん ぞ 」また 、野次馬 たち から 集めた 反物 も 、持ってきた 者たち に 返し ました 。 「その方 ら の 協力 に より 、無事に 盗賊 を 見つける 事 が 出来た 。 これ ら の 反物 は その方 ら に 返そう 。 また 、地蔵 も 赦免 申しつける ゆえ 、中 の 郷 に 持ち帰り 安置 する ように 。 ・・・ うむ 。 これ にて 、一件 落着 ！ さて 、この 話 は たちまち 知れ渡り 、この お地蔵さん に 頼めば どんな 事 でも 願い が 叶う と 評判 に なり ました 。 そして 越前 の お 裁き に ちなんで 荒縄 で 地蔵 を しばり 、『願い が 叶ったら 、縄 を 解き ます 』と 、願 を 掛ける ように なった と いう こと です 。
