my little sons|||||||you sin
1 My little children, I write these things to you, so that you do not sin.
||||sins|advocate||||||||he||propitiation||||||||||||the whole|
But if anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 and he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.
||||||||||we keep
3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 Whoever says he knows him but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
||||||||love||perfected|||||||||
5 But whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected: and by this we know that we are in him.
|||||remain||||walked|||walk
6 Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
Beloved|||||to you||commandment|old||you have||
7 Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning.
Mandatum vetus est verbum, quod audistis.
command|old||||
The old commandment is the word which you heard.
||||||||||||||||have passed|||||
8 Again, I write a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you: because the darkness has passed away, and the true light is already shining.
9 Qui dicit se in luce esse, et fratrem suum odit, in tenebris est usque adhuc.
he who||||||||||||||
9 Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.
||||||remains||stumbling block||||
10 Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him.
||||||||||||||||||have blinded||
11 But whoever hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
12 Scribo vobis, filioli, quoniam remittuntur vobis peccata propter nomen ejus.
12 I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for His name's sake.
|||because|you have known|||||
13 I write to you, fathers, because you have known Him who is from the beginning.
Scribo vobis, adolescentes, quoniam vicistis malignum.
||young people||you have conquered|evil one
I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the wicked one.
14 Scribo vobis, infantes, quoniam cognovistis patrem.
|to you|little children|||
Scribo vobis juvenes, quoniam fortes estis, et verbum Dei manet in vobis, et vicistis malignum.
||young men|||||||remains|||||
|love|||||||are in it
||||||||||||||||desire|||||of the eyes||pride of life|of life|||||||||
||passes away|||||||||||
17 And the world passes away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.
||||||||the antichrist||||of the antichrist|||||||||
18 Little children, it is the last hour: and as you have heard that antichrist cometh, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last hour.
out|us|came out|||||||||||they would have remained|||||manifest|||||||
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
20 Sed vos unctionem habetis a Sancto, et nostis omnia.
||anointing|||||you know|
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.
||||the ignorant|the truth|||knowing|it||||lie||||
21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it: and because no lie is of the truth.
||||||denies||||
22 Who is the liar, except he who denies that Jesus is the Christ?
||||denies|||
This is the antichrist, who denies the Father and the Son.
||||||||confesses||||
23 Everyone who denies the Son does not have the Father; he who confesses the Son has the Father also.
|||||||may it remain||||he/she/it remains|||||||||||you will remain
24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.
|||promise|||promised||||
25 And this is the promise that he promised us, eternal life.
26 Hæc scripsi vobis de his, qui seducant vos.
||||||deceive|
26 These things I have written to you concerning those who deceive you.
||||you received|||may it remain||
27 And you have the anointing which you received from him, let it remain in you.
||||||||||anointing||teaches||||||||||lie
And you do not need that anyone teach you: but as his anointing teaches you about all things, and is true, and is not a lie.
Et sicut docuit vos : manete in eo.
||he taught||remain in it||
And just as it has taught you, you abide in him.
||||||||he appears||confidence|||be ashamed||||coming|||||||||||||||||
28 And now, little children, abide in him: so that when he appears, we may have confidence, and not be confounded by him at his coming. 29 If you know that he is just, know that everyone who does justice is also born of him.
