21 1 Cum autem factum esset ut navigaremus abstracti ab eis, recto cursu venimus Coum, et sequenti die Rhodum, et inde Pataram. 21 1 And when it had come to pass that we sailed away from them, we went in a straight course to Coum, and the next day to Rhodes, and thence to Patara. 2 Et cum invenissemus navem transfretantem in Phœnicen, ascendentes navigavimus. 2 And when we found a ship going over to Phoenicia, we embarked and set sail. 3 Cum apparuissemus autem Cypro, relinquentes eam ad sinistram, navigavimus in Syriam, et venimus Tyrum : ibi enim navis expositura erat onus. 3 And when we had appeared in Cyprus, leaving it to the left, we sailed for Syria, and came to Tyre: for there the ship was to unload the cargo. 4 Inventis autem discipulis, mansimus ibi diebus septem : qui Paulo dicebant per Spiritum ne ascenderet Jerosolymam. 4 And having found the disciples, we remained there seven days: who told Paul by the Spirit not to go up to Jerusalem. 5 Et expletis diebus, profecti ibamus, deducentibus nos omnibus cum uxoribus et filiis usque foras civitatem : et positis genibus in littore, oravimus. 5 And when the days were over, they set out, leading us all with their wives and children to the outskirts of the city: and kneeling on the shore, we prayed. 6 Et cum valefecissemus invicem, ascendimus navem : illi autem redierunt in sua. 6 And when we had said good-bye to each other, we boarded the ship: but they returned in their own. 7 Nos vero navigatione expleta a Tyro descendimus Ptolemaidam : et salutatis fratribus, mansimus die una apud illos. 7 We, having completed our voyage, descended from Tire to Ptolemais, and having greeted our brothers, remained with them one day. 8 Alia autem die profecti, venimus Cæsaream. 8 And the next day we set out, and came to Caesarea. Et intrantes domum Philippi evangelistæ, qui erat unus de septem, mansimus apud eum. And entering the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, we stayed with him. 9 Huic autem erant quatuor filiæ virgines prophetantes. 9 And he had four virgin daughters prophesying.

10 Et cum moraremur per dies aliquot, supervenit quidam a Judæa propheta, nomine Agabus. 10 And when we had tarried for several days, there came a certain prophet from Judea, named Agabus. 11 Is cum venisset ad nos, tulit zonam Pauli : et alligans sibi pedes et manus, dixit : Hæc dicit Spiritus Sanctus : Virum, cujus est zona hæc, sic alligabunt in Jerusalem Judæi, et tradent in manus gentium. 11 When he came to us, he took Paul's girdle: and binding his hands and feet, he said: Thus saith the Holy Spirit: Thus shall the Jews bind the man whose girdle is in Jerusalem, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. 12 Quod cum audissemus, rogabamus nos, et qui loci illius erant, ne ascenderet Jerosolymam. 12 When we had heard this, we and those who were in that place begged him not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Tunc respondit Paulus, et dixit : Quid facitis flentes, et affligentes cor meum ? 13 Then Paul answered and said: What are you doing weeping and grieving my heart? Ego enim non solum alligari, sed et mori in Jerusalem paratus sum propter nomen Domini Jesu. For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. 14 Et cum ei suadere non possemus, quievimus, dicentes : Domini voluntas fiat. 14 And when we could not persuade him, we rested, saying: The Lord's will be done.

15 Post dies autem istos, præparati ascendebamus in Jerusalem. 15 After these days, we were prepared to go up to Jerusalem. 16 Venerunt autem et ex discipulis a Cæsarea nobiscum, adducentes secum apud quem hospitaremur Mnasonem quemdam Cyprium, antiquum discipulum. 16 And some of the disciples also came with us from Caesarea, bringing with them a certain Mnason Cyprius, an ancient disciple, with whom we were to lodge. 17 Et cum venissemus Jerosolymam, libenter exceperunt nos fratres. 17 And when we came to Jerusalem, the brethren gladly received us.

18 Sequenti autem die introibat Paulus nobiscum ad Jacobum, omnesque collecti sunt seniores. 18 And on the following day Paul went in with us to James, and all the elders were gathered together. 19 Quos cum salutasset, narrabat per singula quæ Deus fecisset in gentibus per ministerium ipsius. 19 When he had greeted them, he recounted in detail what God had done among the nations through his ministry. 20 At illi cum audissent, magnificabant Deum, dixeruntque ei : Vides, frater, quot millia sunt in Judæis qui crediderunt, et omnes æmulatores sunt legis. 20 But when they heard, they magnified God, and said to him: You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews who have believed, and they are all imitators of the law. 21 Audierunt autem de te quia discessionem doceas a Moyse eorum qui per gentes sunt Judæorum, dicens non debere eos circumcidere filios suos, neque secundum consuetudinem ingredi. 21 And they heard of thee that thou teachest the departure from Moses of those who are among the nations of the Jews, saying that they ought not to circumcise their sons, nor to enter according to custom. 22 Quid ergo est ? 22 What is it then? utique oportet convenire multitudinem : audient enim te supervenisse. surely the multitude must be assembled: for they will hear that you have arrived. 23 Hoc ergo fac quod tibi dicimus. 23 So do what we tell you. Sunt nobis viri quatuor, votum habentes super se. We have four men, having a vow upon them. 24 His assumptis, sanctifica te cum illis, et impende in illis ut radant capita : et scient omnes quia quæ de te audierunt, falsa sunt, sed ambulas et ipse custodiens legem. 24 Having received these, sanctify yourself with them, and invest in them so that they shave their heads: and all will know that what they have heard about you is false, but you walk also keeping the law. 25 De his autem qui crediderunt ex gentibus, nos scripsimus judicantes ut abstineant se ab idolis immolato, et sanguine, et suffocato, et fornicatione. 25 But concerning those who believed from the Gentiles, we wrote judging them to abstain from things sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from strangulation, and from fornication. 26 Tunc Paulus, assumptis viris, postera die purificatus cum illis intravit in templum, annuntians expletionem dierum purificationis, donec offerretur pro unoquoque eorum oblatio. 26 Then Paul, having been taken by the men, the next day having been purified, entered with them into the temple, announcing the completion of the days of purification, until an offering was offered for each one of them.

27 Dum autem septem dies consummarentur, hi qui de Asia erant Judæi, cum vidissent eum in templo, concitaverunt omnem populum, et injecerunt ei manus, clamantes : 28 Viri Israëlitæ, adjuvate : hic est homo qui adversus populum, et legem, et locum hunc, omnes ubique docens, insuper et gentiles induxit in templum, et violavit sanctum locum istum. 27 And while the seven days were at an end, the Jews who were from Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the people, and laid hands on him, crying: 28 Men of Israel, help: here is a man who is against the people, and the law, and this place , teaching all everywhere, moreover, he brought the Gentiles into the temple and violated that holy place. 29 Viderant enim Trophimum Ephesium in civitate cum ipso, quem æstimaverunt quoniam in templum introduxisset Paulus. 29 For they had seen Trophimus of Ephesus in the city with him, whom they esteemed because Paul had brought him into the temple. 30 Commotaque est civitas tota, et facta est concursio populi. 30 And the whole city was moved, and there was a gathering of the people. Et apprehendentes Paulum, trahebant eum extra templum : et statim clausæ sunt januæ. And seizing Paul, they dragged him out of the temple: and immediately the doors were shut. 31 Quærentibus autem eum occidere, nuntiatum est tribuno cohortis quia tota confunditur Jerusalem. 31 But to those who sought to kill him, it was reported to the tribune of the army that all Jerusalem was in confusion. 32 Qui statim, assumptis militibus et centurionibus, decurrit ad illos. 32 Who immediately, having taken the soldiers and centurions, ran to them. Qui cum vidissent tribunum et milites, cessaverunt percutere Paulum. When they saw the tribune and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33 Tunc accedens tribunus apprehendit eum, et jussit eum alligari catenis duabus : et interrogabat quis esset, et quid fecisset. 33 Then the tribune, approaching, seized him, and ordered him to be bound with two chains: and he asked who he was, and what he had done. 34 Alii autem aliud clamabant in turba. 34 Others, however, were shouting something else in the crowd. Et cum non posset certum cognoscere præ tumultu, jussit duci eum in castra. And when he could not know for sure because of the tumult, he ordered him to be taken into the camp. 35 Et cum venisset ad gradus, contigit ut portaretur a militibus propter vim populi. 35 And when he had come to the steps, it happened that he was carried away by the soldiers because of the violence of the people. 36 Sequebatur enim multitudo populi, clamans : Tolle eum. 36 For a multitude of people followed, crying: Take him away. 37 Et cum cœpisset induci in castra Paulus, dicit tribuno : Si licet mihi loqui aliquid ad te ? 37 And when Paul had begun to be led into the camp, he said to the tribune: May I speak something to you? Qui dixit : Græce nosti ? Who said: Do you know Greece? 38 nonne tu es Ægyptius, qui ante hos dies tumultum concitasti, et eduxisti in desertum quatuor millia virorum sicariorum ? 38 Are you not an Egyptian, who stirred up an uproar before these days, and led out into the desert four thousand assassins? 39 Et dixit ad eum Paulus : Ego homo sum quidem Judæus a Tarso Ciliciæ, non ignotæ civitatis municeps. 39 And Paul said to him: I am indeed a man, a Jew from Tarsus in Cilicia, not the governor of an unknown city. Rogo autem te, permitte mihi loqui ad populum. But I beseech thee, let me speak to the people. 40 Et cum ille permisisset, Paulus stans in gradibus annuit manu ad plebem, et magno silentio facto, allocutus est lingua hebræa, dicens : |||had allowed||||||||||||||||| 40 And when he had given permission, Paul, standing on the steps, beckoned with his hand to the people, and in great silence, spoke in the Hebrew language, saying:
