THE APES AND THE TWO TRAVELLERS
القردة والمسافران
Two men were travelling together, one of whom never spoke the truth, whereas the other never told a lie: and they came in the course of their travels to the land of Apes.
كان رجلان مسافرين معًا، أحدهما لم يتكلم أبدًا بالصدق، بينما الآخر لم يكذب أبدًا: ووصلوا في أثناء سفرهم إلى أرض القردة.
Deux hommes voyageaient ensemble, dont l'un ne disait jamais la vérité et l'autre jamais le mensonge, et ils arrivèrent, au cours de leur voyage, au pays des singes.
The King of the Apes, hearing of their arrival, ordered them to be brought before him; and by way of impressing them with his magnificence, he received them sitting on a throne, while the Apes, his subjects, were ranged in long rows on either side of him.
ولما سمع ملك القردة بقدومهم أمر بإحضارهم أمامه، ولإبهارهم بفخامته استقبلهم جالسين على العرش، بينما اصطف القردة، رعيته، في صفوف طويلة على جانبيه.
Le roi des singes, ayant appris leur arrivée, ordonna qu'on les conduisît devant lui, et, pour les impressionner par sa magnificence, il les reçut assis sur un trône, tandis que les singes, ses sujets, étaient rangés en longues files de chaque côté de lui.
When the Travellers came into his presence he asked them what they thought of him as a King.
وعندما جاء المسافرون إلى حضرته سألهم عما يعتقدون فيه كملك.
Lorsque les voyageurs sont entrés en sa présence, il leur a demandé ce qu'ils pensaient de lui en tant que roi.
The lying Traveller said, "Sire, every one must see that you are a most noble and mighty monarch."
قال المسافر الكاذب: "سيدي، يجب على الجميع أن يروا أنك ملك نبيل وقوي للغاية".
Le voyageur menteur dit : "Sire, tout le monde doit voir que vous êtes un monarque très noble et très puissant".
"And what do you think of my subjects?"
"وماذا تعتقد بشأن موضوعاتي؟"
continued the King.
"They," said the Traveller, "are in every way worthy of their royal master."
"إنهم"، كما قال المسافر، "يستحقون سيدهم الملكي بكل الطرق".
"Ils sont en tout point dignes de leur royal maître", dit le voyageur.
The Ape was so delighted with his answer that he gave him a very handsome present.
لقد كان القرد مسرورًا جدًا بإجابته لدرجة أنه أعطاه هدية جميلة جدًا.
Le singe fut tellement ravi de sa réponse qu'il lui offrit un très beau cadeau.
The other Traveller thought that if his companion was rewarded so splendidly for telling a lie, he himself would certainly receive a still greater reward for telling the truth; so, when the Ape turned to him and said, "And what, sir, is your opinion?"
أما المسافر الآخر فقد ظن أنه إذا كان رفيقه قد نال مكافأة رائعة على كذبه، فإنه بالتأكيد سوف ينال مكافأة أعظم على صدقه؛ لذلك عندما التفت إليه القرد وقال له: "ما رأيك يا سيدي؟"
L'autre voyageur pensa que si son compagnon était si bien récompensé pour avoir dit un mensonge, il recevrait certainement lui-même une récompense encore plus grande pour avoir dit la vérité ; aussi, lorsque le singe se tourna vers lui et lui dit : "Et quelle est, monsieur, votre opinion ?"
he replied, "I think you are a very fine Ape, and all your subjects are fine Apes too."
فأجابني: "أعتقد أنك قرد جيد جدًا، وكل رعاياك هم قرود جيدة أيضًا".
il répondit : "Je pense que vous êtes un très bon singe, et que tous vos sujets sont également de bons singes".
The King of the Apes was so enraged at his reply that he ordered him to be taken away and clawed to death.
لقد غضب ملك القردة بشدة من رده لدرجة أنه أمر بأخذه بعيدًا وتقطيعه حتى الموت.
Le roi des singes fut si furieux de sa réponse qu'il ordonna qu'on l'emmène et qu'on le griffe jusqu'à ce que mort s'ensuive.
