THE STAG AT THE POOL

LE CERF À LA PISCINE
A thirsty Stag went down to a pool to drink.
ذهب أيل عطشان إلى بركة ليشرب.
As he bent over the surface he saw his own reflection in the water, and was struck with admiration for his fine spreading antlers, but at the same time he felt nothing but disgust for the weakness and slenderness of his legs.
وبينما كان ينحني على السطح، رأى انعكاسه في الماء، وأُعجب بقرونه الجميلة الممتدة، لكنه في الوقت نفسه لم يشعر إلا بالاشمئزاز من ضعف ونحافة ساقيه.
En se penchant à la surface, il vit son propre reflet dans l'eau et fut frappé d'admiration pour ses beaux bois étalés, mais en même temps il n'éprouva que du dégoût pour la faiblesse et l'étroitesse de ses jambes.
While he stood there looking at himself, he was seen and attacked by a Lion; but in the chase which ensued, he soon drew away from his pursuer, and kept his lead as long as the ground over which he ran was open and free of trees.
وبينما كان واقفا هناك ينظر إلى نفسه، شوهد وهاجمه أسد؛ ولكن في المطاردة التي أعقبت ذلك، سرعان ما ابتعد عن مطارده، وظل في المقدمة طالما كانت الأرض التي ركض عليها مفتوحة وخالية من الأشجار.
Alors qu'il restait là à se regarder, il fut vu et attaqué par un lion ; mais dans la poursuite qui s'ensuivit, il s'éloigna rapidement de son poursuivant et garda son avance tant que le terrain sur lequel il courait était dégagé et dépourvu d'arbres.
But coming presently to a wood, he was caught by his antlers in the branches, and fell a victim to the teeth and claws of his enemy.
ولكن عندما وصل على الفور إلى الغابة، أمسكته قرونه في الفروع، وسقط ضحية لأسنان ومخالب عدوه.
Mais, arrivant bientôt dans un bois, il fut pris par ses bois dans les branches, et tomba victime des dents et des griffes de son ennemi.
"Woe is me!"
"ويل لي!"
"Malheur à moi !"
he cried with his last breath; "I despised my legs, which might have saved my life: but I gloried in my horns, and they have proved my ruin."
"فصرخ في آخر أنفاسه: ""احتقرت رجليَّ اللتين كان من الممكن أن تنقذا حياتي، ولكني افتخرت بقرني، فقد جعلتا هلاكي""."
What is worth most is often valued least.
ما هو الأكثر قيمة هو في الغالب الأقل قيمة.
