牛 女 は 、自分 の 子供 を かわいがる こと は 、一通り で ありませんでした 。 自分 が 不具者 だ と いう こと も 、子供 が 、不具者 の 子 だから 、みんな に ばかに される のだろう と いう こと も 、父親 が ない から 、ほか に だれ も 子供 を 育てて くれる もの が ない と いう こと も 、よく 知っていました 。

それ です から 、いっそう 子供 に 対する 不憫 がました と みえて 、子供 を かわいがった のであります 。

子供 は 男の子 で 、母親 を 慕いました 。 そして 、母親 の ゆく ところ へ は 、どこ へ でも ついて ゆきました 。

牛女 は 、大女 で 、力 も 、また ほか の 人たち より は 、幾倍 も ありました うえに 、性質 が 、やさしく あった から 、人々 は 、牛女 に 力仕事 を 頼みました 。 たき ぎ を しょったり 、石 を 運んだり 、また 、荷物 を かつが したり 、いろいろの こと を 頼みました 。 牛 女 は 、よく 働きました 。 そして 、その 金 で 二人 は 、その 日 、その 日 を 暮らして いました 。
