2.2.我 的 語言 探索 歷程 ：遠 赴 歐洲 （上 ）

===探險 開始 ===

在 蒙特利爾 的 努力 成果 ，

使 我 更 決心 要 精通 法語 ，於是 決定 到 法國 去 。

決心 導致 成功 ，成功 更 加強 了 決心 。

一九六二 年 的 六月 ，我 辭去 暑期 的 建築 工 工作 ，

到 蒙特利爾 的 碼頭 去 尋求 一 份 能 搭 便 船 到 歐洲 去 的 差事 。

連續 三天 ，我 登上 好幾 艘 的 遠洋 貨輪 ，要求 進見 船長 ，

希望 能 以 工作 交換 搭乘 便 船 到 歐洲 去 。

到 了 第三天 ，運氣 來 了 ，

一 艘 來自 德國 佛倫斯堡 的 不 定期 小 貨輪 ，名叫 格達•歇爾 ，

在 魁北克 丟失 了 一 名 水手 ，正 需要 替補 一個 回航 的 船員 。

我 於是 啟程 出發 。

除了 費力 的 工作 和 小 貨輪 不時 在 大西洋 上 搖 來 晃 去 之外 (搖晃 )，

這 趟 航行 也 是 個 機會 ，

讓 我 能 親自 體驗 到 一般 有關 文化 的 老生常談 是 多麼 不 正確 (常談 )。

船 上 的 工作人員 ，一半 是 德國 人 ，一半 是 西班牙 人 。

不同於 我 一向 被 灌輸 的 觀念 ，

我 以為 應該 是 工作 勤勉 的 德國 人 ，結果 工作 態度 有點 隨便 ，有時 還 酗酒 ;

而 一向 我 以為 是 心情 變化 快 的 西班牙 人 ，工作 卻 十分 認真 、努力 。

在 海上 航行 了 大約 十天 之後 ，我們 抵達 倫敦 。

為了 希望 第二天 能夠 不 吃 東西 省下 點 錢 ，

我 把 船 上 的 免費 食品 儘量 吃 個 夠 。

這 策略 並 不 算 聰明 ，我 結果 是 好象 生 了 病 一樣 。

倫敦 對 我 來說 ，是 個 具有 異國情調 的 地方 。

雖然 每個 人 都 講 英語 ，卻 又 與 自己 的 國家 十分 不 一樣 。

海德公園 的 「演講 者 角落 」令人 難忘 ;

還有 那些 古 錢幣 系統 ：

像是 先令 、便士 、金鎊 、半 便士 、廿 先令 、一 先令

和 基尼 (舊時 等於 廿一 先令 的 英國 金幣 )等 。

我 也 還 記得 有 個 晚上 睡 在 人行道 上 ，

為的是 要 買到 勞倫斯 • 奧利佛 的 莎劇 「奧賽羅 」的 票 ，

結果 在 整個 表演 時間 我 都 打不起 精神 觀賞 。

我 在 倫敦 停留 了 一個 禮拜 ，然後 繼續 向 歐洲 大陸 前進 。

我 從 英國 的 多佛 港 搭乘 渡輪 ，入夜 後 抵達 比利時 的 奧斯坦德 。

##有 個 講 法蘭德斯 語 的 比利時人 用 摩托車 載 我 一 程 ，

送 我 到 布魯日 --一個 中古 城鎮 。

我 當時 年輕 沒有 學識 ，對 中古 世紀 法蘭德斯 人 光榮 的 歷史 一無所知 ，

也 不 知道 當時 發生 在 魁北克 間 的 語言 問題 ，也 同時 在 比利時 燃燒 ，

##那 就 是 講 法蘭德斯 語 和 講 法語 兩個 社群 之間 的 衝突 對立 。

我 後來 會 有 機會 回到 布魯日 （口誤 布魯吉斯 ）去 探究 這個 被 保存 得 很 好 的 中古 城鎮 。

但 當時 我 只是 個 匆忙 的 年輕人 ，次日 ，就 搭上 便車 到 法國 去 了 。

雖然 法國 人 一向 有 粗俗 無禮 的 壞 名聲 ，但 我 遇見 的 人 都 十分 友善 、好客 。

在 法國 北部 的 里爾 市郊 ，有 兩位 老師 前來 迎接 。

由於 正值 暑假 期間 ，他們 允許 我 在 學校 的 教室 裡 過夜 。

之後 ，他們 又 邀請 我 外出 用餐 ，介紹 我 認識 了 一些 人 ，

第二天 就 由 這些 人 載 我 到 巴黎 去 。

我 仍然 記得 當 我們 經由 香榭麗舍 大道 駛向 凱旋門 時 的 感覺 。

我 一度 真 不敢 相信 自己 能 親身 經歷 那些 只 有 在 影片 中 才 能 見到 的 情景 。

我 的 法國 朋友 邀請 我 在 他們 樸實 的 公寓 裡 住 兩個 星期 ，

那 是 位於 巴黎 第二十 郡 的 一個 工人 區 。

我 在 觀光局 找到 一 份 翻譯 的 短期 工作 ，（觀光 ）

就 如此 和 這些 人 吃 住 在 一起 ， 共度 了 愉快 的 兩個 禮 拜 。

我 有時 步行 ，有時 搭乘 地鐵 ，在 巴黎 市內 四處 遊逛 。

我 和 新 結交 的 朋友 到 郊外 的 莊園 野餐 ，也 參加 一些 其它 的 社交 活動 。

當 我 最後 決定 繼續 南下 的 時候 ，心裡 覺得 十分 遺憾 。

在 法國 的 時候 ，我 很 早 就 知道 自己 的 法語 還 並 不 完美 ，

但 已 能夠 讓 我 自在 地 與 人 交談 （口誤 對談 ）、結交 朋友 。

當然 ，我 有時 也 會 遇到 不 友善 的 法國人 。

不錯 ，許多 公家機關 的 服務 人員 特別 喜歡 說 :「不 !」（公家 ）

每當 你 要求 某些 服務 時 ， 通常 得到 的 是 一連串 的 拒絕 :

「啊 ，不是 的 ，也 不是 那樣 ，不是 ，當然 不是 ，那 不行 ，不行 !」

但是 ，要 想 在 另 一個 國度 或 文化 體系 求 生存 ，其 秘訣 就 是 ：

不要 太 在意 那些 不 愉快 的 事 ， 而 要 專注 於 那些 正面 的 、 積極 的 事 。

當時 我 的 法語 還 講得 不好 ，

有時 在 面對 那些 能言善辯 、沒有 耐心 的 官方 人員 或 店老闆 時 ，

由於 勢 不均 力 不敵 ，總是 覺得 十分 費力 。

但 如今 我 並 不 記得 有 多少 不 愉快 的 事 ， 因為 我 一向 不 把 他們 放在心上 。

倒是 有 件 事 我 還 記得 十分 清楚 ，

由於 缺乏 對 法語 的 認識 ，而 差點 給 自己 帶來 麻煩 。

我 在 法國 的 第一 年 間 ，結交 了 一 名 美國 女朋友 ，

她 的 父母 當時 正在 西班牙 的 阿里坎替 (西班牙 東南方 的 一個 港口 )工作 。

那 年 復活節 ，我們 決定 搭 便車 去 那裡 度假 。

我 買 了 一 份 禮物 ，是 個 有名 的 法國 香頌 歌手 喬治 •布拉森 所 錄 的 歌曲 。

(chanson 是 法國 一種 通俗歌曲 ，通常 在 餐館 或 酒吧 的 餘興 節目 中 表演 )。

身為 一個 法國 文化 的 崇拜者 ，我 非常 喜愛 聆聽 他 的 歌曲 ，

但 對 他 所 唱 的 內容 並 不 十分 瞭解 。

很 不幸 的 ，我 不 知道 他 的 歌詞 雖然 還 不 完全 算是 色情 ，卻 也 十分 「有味 」。

當 主人 聽到 這 份 我 贈予 的 禮物 時 ，他們 嚇住 了 。

我 想 他們 大概 十分 擔心 自己 的 女兒 結交 了 一個 怎麼樣 的 朋友 。

我 在 法國 停留 了 三年 。

第一 年 是 在 格倫諾伯 ，那 是 法國 阿爾卑斯山 區 的 一個 工業 城 。

遺憾 的 是 ，我 一直 沒有 時間 去 滑雪 ，因為 我 若 不是 在 學習 ，就是 在 工作 。

我 為 一家 印刷廠 運送 成捆 的 廢紙 ，是 個 不 定期 的 工作 ;

我 也 是 一家 「公園 大飯店 」的 侍者 幫手 ，

也 在 一些 主要 廣場 和 餐廳 地帶 販售 「 法蘭西 晚報 」 ， 並且 敎 人 學習 英語 ，

甚至 為 格倫諾伯 大學 打 冰球 。

格倫諾伯 另 一個 引人 的 地方 ，就 是 有 許多 瑞典 女孩 前來 學習 法語 。

我 藉此 複習 了 不少 瑞典 語 ，那 是 我 從 小 學 過 ，卻 又 已經 遺忘 的 語言 。

===“政治 科學 研究院 ”===

我 很 幸運地 從 法國 政府 方面 得到 了 一 份 獎學金 ，

使 我 能 在 往後 的 兩 年 間 住 到 巴黎 ，在 那裡 的 政治 科學 研究院 就讀 。

這 所 被 暱稱 為 政科 的 學校 ，是 位於 聖吉爾曼 天主堂 不 遠 的 古 巴黎 中心 ，

也 就是 在 拉丁區 （ 或 稱 學生 區 ） 附近 。

政治 科學 研究院 自誇 擁有 許多 傑出 的 校友 ，

其中 包括 前 加拿大 首相 皮耶 •杜魯道 。

政治 科學 研究院 的 教學 文化 與 北美 不大 相同 。

他們 強調 瞭解 真相 ，並且 能 很快 地 依照 一 套 由來已久 的 公式 ，

把 所 獲得 的 真相 組織 起來 。

我 仍 記得 有 位 法律 教授 告訴 我 :”形式 比 內容 更 重要 !"

法國 人 十分 重視 如何 能夠 正確 、優雅 地 表達 自己 的 思想 意思 。

在 「政科 」裡面 ，最 重要 的 考試 項目 是 口試 ，或 「口述 文章 」。

學生 必須 在 很 短 的 時間 之內 ，

針對 當場 隨意 抽選 的 題目 整理 出 大約 十五分鐘 的 內容 ，

然後 向 一個 資深 教授 小組 提出 口頭 報告 。

教授 們 評分 的 標準 是 根據 學 生 表達 觀點 的 能力 ，

並且 有 沒有 應用 平衡 與 邏輯 的 方法 。

除此之外 ，他們 所 提出 的 訊息 內容 也 一樣 重要 。

「政科 」那 套 用來 組織 思想 的 公式 其實 十分 簡單 。

無論 你 想 講 什麼 ，都 要 遵循 以下 的 形式 :引言 、第一 部 份 、第二 部 份 、結論 。

重要 的 是 : 第一 部 份 與 第二 部 份 的 長度 要 相差 不 多 。

按 我 的 語言 學習 之 旅 照 理想 ，

第一 部 份 是 提出 一個 觀點 或 理論 ，

第二 部 份 則 提出 相反 的 論點 或 立場 ，

而 結論 則 是 提出 解決 方法 或 做 個 總結 。

就是 這樣 !

這種 強調 用 邏輯 和 平衡 來 組織 信息 的 方法 ，

無論 是 使用 任何 語言 來 交流 ，都 是 十分 有用 的 訓練 。

這 技術 幫助 我 用 法語 去 組織 我 的 文字 敘述 和 口頭 報導 ，

畢竟 ，法語 對 我 仍 是 一種 外國 語言 。

在 使用 外國 語言 書寫 或 口頭 表達 的 時候 ，

能 有 一套 基本 的 慣用 公式 去 組織 思想 ，這 對 你 十分 重要 。

否則 ，你 很 容易 變得 散漫 無序 、毫無 章法 ，

因為 你 對 新 語言 還 無法 控制 得當 。

真 顯然 的 ，

無論 是 書寫 一 份 商務 報告 、一 則 哲學 散文 、還是 一 篇 學術 論文 ，

都 需要 你 把 信息 用 不同 的 方法 組織 起來 。

這 比起 一般 的 閒談 要 更 正式 、更 需要 結構 。

甚至 ，這 一類 文章 所 需 要 的 結構 ，也 會 因 著 文化 的 不同 而 不 同 。

無論如何 ， 在 我 使用 外國 語言 寫 文章 的 時候 〈 而 法語 正好 是 我 的 第一個 外國 語言 〉 ，

（我 ）總 覺得 自己 使用 的 每個 句子 都 跟 講 的 一樣 。

雖然 ，毫無疑問 的 ，書寫 和 言談 之間 仍 有 一些 區別 ，

但 我 總 設法 讓 兩者 儘可能 相似 。

我 也 建議 大家 使用 這 個 方法 ，去 同時 改進 寫作 及 口語 的 準確性 。

近來 在 語言 學習 方面 有 個 趨勢 ，

認為 教導 口述 語言 和 教導 書面 語言 應該 採用 不同 的 教學 方 法 。

我 並不 認為 如此 。

好 的 口述 語言 與 好 的 書寫 語言 是 很 相似 的 :清晰 、簡單 、而且 優美 。

有人 認為 ，講 母語 的 人 對 口述 語言 通常 不 那麼 嚴謹 ，

這種 說法 雖然 不錯 ，但 我 認為 不應該 用 來 做為 教導 初學者 的 典範 。

俚語 和 過度 白話 的 俗語 並 不 適合 非 母語 的 使用 者 ，

這 要 一直 等到 他們 能夠 自 在 地 運用 這個 語言 之後 再 開始 使用 。

學習者 至少 要 把 語言 講 得 像 寫 的 一樣 好 。

當 我 使用 外國 語言 書寫 或 口頭 表達 的 時候 ，

都 儘量 使用 簡單 、明確 的 字詞 ，

並且 避免 過於 隨便 的 口頭 方式 ，或 過於 複雜 的 書寫 風格 。

這樣 ，就 是 一般 日常 的 寫作 練習 ，

也 能 對 你 訓練 正確 地 口頭 表達 大有 幫助 。

===旅行 與 文化 ===

法國人 對 他們 的 邏輯 推理 很 感到 自豪 。

任何 與 他們 邏輯 不符 的 東西 都 是 錯 的 ，並且 會 受到 毫不留情 的 攻擊 。

基於 這個 理由 ，他們 有時 會 顯得 自大 或 不 友善 。

對 我 來說 ，法國 不但 是 個 充滿 刺激 的 國家 ，並且 也 非常 善待 客人 。

我 得到 了 一 份 獎學金 ，使 我 能 在 法國 停留 兩年 ，

也 認識 了 許多 慷慨 、善良 的 人 。

有時 我 在 鄉間 搭乘 便車 ，往往 受到 熱情 的 款待 ，

他們 不但 邀 我 共同 進餐 ，而且 有時 也 邀請 我 在 他們 家 中 過夜 。

我 對 法國 語言 和 文化 的 投入 態度 ，

使 我 能 在 與 他人 交往 的 時候 建立 起 橋樑 。

我 相信 ，假如 我 仍然 停留 在 一般 北美 英語 人 的 心態 ，

這 一切 就 不 可能 發生 。

有 許多 「北美 英語 人 」能夠 很 成功地 學會 各種 新 語言 ，

但 由於 英語 已 成 了 最 通用 的 國際 語言 ，努力 想 學習 英語 的 人 其實 更 多 。

這 對 講 英語 的 人 是 很 大 的 損失 ，

因為 他們 因此 失去 了 一個 能夠 充實 自己 個人 經驗 的 語 言 學習 機會 。

我 很 喜歡 到 鄉間 走訪 ，參觀 具有 歷史性 的 村莊 或 城鎮 ，並 與 當地人 用 法語 交談 。

跟 大部分 的 國家 一樣 ，法語 也 有 許多 地方 口音 。

當 你 講 外國 語言 的 時候 ，你 不免 想要 儘量 去 模仿 當地人 的 口音 ，以便 顯得 道地 。

我 的 意思 是 ， 假如 我 是 在 巴黎 ， 我 就 使用 巴黎 腔調 ;

假如 是 在 地中海 一帶 ，就 使用 南方 腔調 ，如此 等等 。

這種 情形 很 難 避免 ，尤其 在 初學 階段 。

但 這 也 是 個 好 現象 ，因為 那 表示 你 有 細心 去 聆聽 他們 的 發音 。

儘管如此 ，我 還是 一直 認為 :對 一個 非 母語 的 學習者 來說 ，

最好 是 採用 標準 的 形式 ，而 不是 某些 地方性 的 腔調 。

每個 國家 的 語言 都 有 一套 公認 的 標準 ，

像 法語 中 的 吐爾茲 口音 (法國 中 西部 的 一個 城市 )、

普通話 的 北京 口音 、或是 日本 話 的 東京 口音 等等 。

聽 外國人 講 地方 腔 有 時 會 顯得 十分 滑稽 ，

使用 中性 的 標準 發音 通常 是 最 明智 的 選擇 。

像 加拿大 英語 便是 這種 標準 、中性 的 英語 。

同樣的 ，語言 學習者 最好 不要 去 使用 土話 、俚語 、或 咒罵 之類的 言語 。

法語 裡 也 有 許多 我 至今 仍 不 理解 的 俗話 ，不過 我 倒 不在意 。

一來 ，我 在 閱讀 時 不常 碰到 這些 用語 ;

二來 ，我 也 不可能 在 平常 談話 時 派上 用場 。

有些 語言 學習者 在 尚未 對 某些 俚語 有 充份 理解 之前 ，就 匆忙 拿 來 應用 。

我 認為 ， 不是 道地 講 母語 的 人 ， 最好 還是 使用 正確 的 標準 語 。

注重 飲食 是 現代 法國 文化 中 很 重要 的 一個 特色 ，

也 是 社會 各 階層 都 喜歡 談論 的 話題 。

法國 人 認為 ，熱情 優雅 地 談論 這個 話題 ，是 人生 一 大 享受 。

在 結束 法國 的 留學 生涯 之後 ，

我 得到 一個 機會 帶領 一群 日本 林木業 的 主管 ，

去 參觀 法國 的 一些 木材 處理 工廠 。

我 記得 有 次 我們 到 位於 都路斯 (法國 南部 一 重要 都市 )的 一家 生產 新式 門窗 的 工廠 參觀 。

當時 ，廠方 的 法國 主辦人 正 熱烈地 討論 一些 事情 ，

我們 一群 人 便 耐心地 坐著 法國 的 歷史 ，

就是 由 那些 創造 了 歐洲 歷史 的 許多 不同 民族 所 寫下 的 歷史 。

人類 最 早期 的 一些 繪畫 與 雕刻 ，就 出現 在 法國 西南方 的 一些 洞穴 裡面 ，

這 大約 可 遠溯 到 兩 萬 年 前 左右 。

到 了 兩千多年 前 羅馬 人 征服 法蘭西 的 時候 ，

那時 是 以賽爾特 族 的 高盧人 勢力 最大 (高盧) 。

雖然 當時 希臘人 在 南方 仍 佔有 一些 屬地 ，北方 則 被 許多 不同 的 部落 盤據 ，

而 古 巴斯克 人 則 佔據 在 西南方 。

羅馬 人 帶來 了 文 明 ，而且 開始 有 了 所謂 的 工程 建設 ，

像是 競技場 、馬路 、供水 系統 等等 ，

至今 都 還 保存 著 以 供 觀光 ，尤其 是 在 法國 的 南方 一帶 。

羅馬 人 也 帶來 了 許多 地中海 的 傳統 食品 ，如 :麵包 、橄欖油 、還有 葡萄酒 。

假如 你 回顧 悠遠 的 歷史 ，便 會 發現 如同 許多 其它 的 國家 一樣 ，法國 也 是 個 大 融爐 。

這 可 由 種種 有關 法 國 起源 的 神話 中 反映 出來 。

他們 有時 強調 高盧人 是 自己 的 祖先 ，有時 也 以 具有 拉丁 的 淵源 為傲 ;

他們 對 地中海 人民 的 感情 ，也 勝過 對 北方 的 歐洲 各 民族 。

當然 ，他們 的 文學 也 一直 受到 古 希臘 、羅馬 經典 的 影響 。

但是 ，法國 早期 的 許多 英雄 人物 ，像是 克洛維 (公元 481-511 法蘭克 王 )、

矮子 •丕平 (公元 751-768 法蘭克 王 )、（丕）

查理 •馬特爾 (丕平 之 父 ，阻止 回教 勢力 進入 西歐 )、

查理曼 (丕平 的 長子 ，公元 800 年 被 封 為 查理曼 大帝 )，

（都 ）則 是 日耳曼 的 法蘭克 人 。

等候 。。。。

後來 ， 我 的 日本 參觀團 終於 按 耐 不住 了 ( 按耐 ） ，

很 想 知道 那些 主辦 人員 究竟 在 爭論 些 什麼 。

我 向 他們 解釋 ，那些 人 是 在 討論 中午 要 到 哪裡 去 吃 午餐 ，所以 會 那麼 熱烈 。

後來 ，我們 是 到 一 處 古老 的 地中海 莊園 ，就 坐 在 莊園 外面 的 松樹 下 進餐 。

我 還 記得 自己 吃 的 是 雞 胗 沙拉 和 什錦 燜 豆 ( salade tiede de gesiers and cassoulet 卡蘇 萊特 ) 。

至於 我們 究竟 在 工廠 裡 參觀 了 些 什麼 ，則 記 不 太 清楚 了 。

熟悉 食物 是 學習 語言 和 文化 極 重要 的 一部 份 。

這 一點 ，法語 和 其它 語言 並 沒什麼 不同 。

環繞 在 餐桌 旁 的 愉悅 交際 ，可 說 是 最好 的 語言 學習 環境 。

羅馬 的 政治家 和 辯論家 西塞羅 (Cicero, 106-43BC )

為 「 歡聚 」 ( convivium , 相當於 英語 中 的 conviviality ) 一 詞 所 下 的 定義 是 :

「與 朋友 坐下 進餐 ，因為 他們 彼此 分享 生命 。」

這種 藉由 食物 而 互通 信息 的 情形 ，在 所有 語言 及 文化 中 都 十分 普遍 ，

相信 這 在 史前 的 漁獵 時代 即 已 開始 ，

這 加強 了 人 與 人 之間 一 種 「互惠 」的 感覺 。

身為 一個 窮學生 ，我 並 沒有 很多 機會 去 享受 名菜 佳餚 ，

但是 ，我 卻 常常 在 法國 南部 一帶 藉著 搭便車 的 機會 ，

而 與 許多 卡車 司機 共享 豐盛 的 午餐 和 葡萄酒 。

至於 他們 如何 能 在 事 後 繼續 開車 ，至今 仍 是 個 謎 。

近年來 ，酒後 駕車 的 管制 ，在 法國 已 愈來愈 嚴格 了 。
