Il povero canarino poeta pur lui, era stato tolto piccoletto al nido, e più non ricordava dove e come. Ricordava senza precisione certo aggrovigliamento di rami e di fronde, una fiorita stesa di piano, un gran pezzo di cielo azzurro— niente più. L'adozione era stata larga di cure e, dapprima, dolce fu la prigione. E lì come se fosse stato a San Pietro a Maiella, il canarino diventò un cantore elegantissimo, una specie di tenorino di grazia.

—Bene, bene—esclamò il marito della signora—ecco il canarino che comincia a dirci qualcosa.

E ogni volta che si trovava nel tinello a lavarsi la faccia, gli faceva lo zufolo col tovagliolo fra mani.

La casa dalla quale era sloggiato era scura e silenziosa. Le finestre non davano sulla strada, riuscivano in un cortile abbandonato, dominio di terribili pipistrelli, qualcuno de' quali perfino veniva a sbatter l'ali intorno alla gabbiuzza, dove il povero canarino tremava di terrore. La bestiola, di sotto l'arco della finestra, non vedeva che i muri grigi del cortile dagli angoli ch'erano scale di polverose ragnatele, da' buchi neri che a notte diventavano case di nottole. Le carrucole nei pozzi stridevano, le secchie si urtavano, le serve, a prima ora, trovandosi tutte ad attingere, dicevano male della gente, appiccicando a ognuno un aggettivo che svegliava goffe risate per tutto il pozzo. Questa la vita del cortile. Una volta solamente il canarino uscì dalla sua malinconia. Una delle fantesche ripuliva la gabbia d'un altro canarino, lasciando cader giù nel cortile le boccate sfuggite del miglio, i rifiuti del prigioniero, e canticchiando. E come quel canarino, per la soddisfazione del miglio fresco e dell'acqua pulita, metteva, di tanto, piccoli gridi acuti, quest'altro credette di aver trovato finalmente qualcuno col quale potesse chiacchierare, nelle ore di noia. Lo chiamò allora due volte.

—Zizì! zì!

zì!

zì!…

Quello rispose allegramente:

—Zì! zì!

Poi vi fu un silenzio. La serva aveva portata via la gabbia; il povero canarino, disilluso, ricadde in malinconia e non avendo a far altro si rimise a contemplare i muri del cortile.

In una giornata di novembre fu tale lo scrosciar della pioggia furiosa e così spaventevoli furono i lampi e i tuoni che il canarino, tutto solo nella gabbia, credette che l'ultimo giorno della sua vita fosse arrivato. Dal lampeggiare continuo era tutto illuminato il cortile, i ferri della gabbia pareva si arroventassero. Poco dopo accorse la serva, che avea lasciate aperte le vetrate della finestra.

—Meno male!—esclamò—I vetri non si sono rotti! E chi l'avrebbe sentito il padrone?… Guardate, nemmeno una parola per quella povera bestia tremante di freddo e di paura! Bella carità cristiana! E così il canarino, a poco a poco, s'abituò ad ogni sorta d'ingenerosità. Nessuno si pigliava pena di lui, ma nessuno, però,

lo veniva a seccare. Meglio così. E il suo amico divenne un pezzo del muro di faccia, ove un ragno intesseva comodamente la sua tela. Nell'estate, quando un po' di sole fece la spia nel cortile; la tela ne fu tutta illuminata e il ragno vi passeggiò di lungo e di largo, con una grande boria di padron di casa. In tutto il giorno si risentivano le voci delle fantesche, lo strepito delle cazzeruole, risate lunghe e sguaiate, scoppiettî di carboni dalle fornacette. La musica metteva in allegria il canarino che, a volte, vi mescolava certe note acute e un trillo per cui le serve, meravigliate, tacevano. Una di loro, mentre lui si sfogava, esclamò:

—Dio! che bella vocetta, neh?

La lode, Dio buono, se la pigliano tutti, la vonno anche i modesti. Il canarino

si guardò i pieducci, ripulì il becco a un ballatoio della gabbia, si piantò saldo sulle gambette e si mise a cantare:

A maggio, v'ho detto, i signori della casa sloggiarono. La primavera sospirava più forte con gli spasimi dei fiori, col susurro delle piante in amore, e nell'aria salivano odori soavissimi e freschi soffi di zeffiri. In una bella giornata profumata si svegliò il canarino a un pispiglio sommesso. Una passera aveva fatto il nido di rimpetto. Poi furono piccoli gridi di compagni liberi che passavano; furono a volte cicalecci impertinenti di rondoni in chiacchiere, sui tetti. I rondoni, al solito, dicevano male del vicinato. Quello era bello, quell'altro era brutto, la tal signorina non sapeva cantare, il violinista del quinto piano pigliava acuti stonati, il portinaio non badava troppo alla figliuola. E il giardino si svegliava all'alba con questi discorsi di uccelli, con le loro querele peripatetiche, con ronzii d'insetti invisibili e voli di bianche farfalle. Il canarino ebbe da tutta questa vita, che gli ricordava indefinitamente il bosco e l'odore acre delle piante, quella malinconia dei ricordi che, si dice, tornano nel tempo della disgrazia. N'ebbe singhiozzi di rimpianti e di desideri che gli rompevano il canto nella gola. E gli cominciarono a cadere le penne. Una si posò sul davanzale della finestra e un colombo se la venne a pigliare.

—Oh! dite, amico—gli chiese il canarino dalla sua gabbia—siete di questi paraggi voi?

—Fatemi la finezza—gli chiese una volta il canarino—sapreste voi perchè così spesso mi cadono le penne? Io ne sono assai preoccupato.

Il colombo lo guardò malinconicamente.

—Che volete vi dica?

E non gli volle dire che gli anni e i dispiaceri sogliono far di questi scherzi. Passò un mese. I piccini del colombo s'eran fatti grandi e strillavano, sporgendo dalla buca le testine ancora spelate. Attorno a quel nido altri nidi si destavano all'alba e un pigolio continuo succedeva sino a quando l'appetito dei piccoli colombi non era soddisfatto. I colombi grandi tubavano all'ombra, empiendo il cortile della dolcezza dei loro amori. In luglio il colombo grigio si ricordò della conoscenza. Ma in quella mattina avea avuto tanto da fare e s'era così impensierito di certi muratori che erano venuti a mettere scale pei muri presso i nidi, che la visita dovette farla a sera, quando i muratori se ne andarono. C'era una luna bianca che faceva capolino di su il belvedere delle monache. —Buona sera—disse il colombo—come state? Sentite che bell'aria fresca? —Ahimè!—disse il canarino—se sapeste, amico mio! Da tempo in qua sono colto da tale tristezza che a momenti mi pare di morire. Mi spoglio ogni giorno più e mi pigliano brividi di freddo, ed anche provo una grande

debolezza. Come mai questo, caro amico?

—Che volete vi dica?—fece il colombo, con gli occhi bassi—Sono cose che accadono. Io son qui di rimpetto, se mai.

E se ne andò, ammalinconito pur lui.

Poi tornò dopo una settimana. La gabbiuzza era vuota. Ma c'era ancora, sulla finestra, una ultima piuma gialla. Il colombo non ebbe coraggio di portarsela via.

E c'era un chiaro di luna quella sera, un chiaro di luna così grande, così grande!…
