Stefano Suigo: il mestiere del traduttore, italiano all'estero - Seconda parte

Ciao a tutti e benvenuti su Podcast Italiano, il podcast per imparare l'italiano attraverso contenuti autentici e interessanti. Questa è la seconda parte dell'intervista a Stefano sugo. Vi consiglio di andare a sentire la prima parte, se non lo avete ancora fatto, perché è importante per dare un contesto a quello che diremo, ma probabilmente non è necessario, in realtà, potete anche ascoltare questa per prima. Nella prima parte avevamo parlato nello specifico delle lingue, delle lingue che sa Stefano, di quelle che hai imparato, dei suoi metodi, in questa parte invece parliamo del suo lavoro – o dei suoi lavori – collegati alle lingue, ovvero la traduzione e il tutoraggio online. Inoltre gli faccio alcune domande sulla cultura italiana all'estero com'è vista… com'è visto, diciamo, l'essere italiani all'estero, l'italianità, le differenze tra Italia ed estero, ciò che c'è di meglio all'estero rispetto all'Italia, invece ciò che è peggio e altre cose, diciamo, su questa linea. Beh, ora mi taccio, smetto di parlare, vi auguro un buon ascolto, spero che vi piaccia anche questa seconda parte.

[1:20] D: Volevo fare qualche altra domanda, più, magari, culturale… in realtà non solamente culturale, ma di vario tipo.

S: Sì.

D: E volevo farti qualche domanda sulla tua carriera da traduttore, perché tu hai… diciamo, è una parte importante della tua vita, se non sbaglio, no?

S: Sì, assolutamente, sono traduttore free-lance da 18 anni, quindi sì… e per 16 anni non ho fatto altro.

D: E poi ha iniziato anche a fare il tutor?

S: Esatto! Da due anni.

D: E da quali lingue traduci?

D: E traduci quindi verso l'italiano o anche verso queste lingue?

S: Allora, in teoria si traduce sempre solo verso la lingua… la lingua materna. Lingua madre. Si dice anche materna?

D: Anche materna, sì. Credo di sì.

S: Adesso ho avuto uno di questi dubbi che ti viene quando sei 15 anni via dall'Italia [ride].

D: Direi che si dice anche materna.

S: Sì, quindi normalmente verso la lingua madre o materna, però mi è successo di tradurre anche verso lingue straniere, in particolare tedesco e portoghese.

D: E puoi parlarci un po' delle gratificazioni maggiori o anche delle difficoltà maggiori di questa professione?

S: Certo, con molto piacere, perché la traduzione alla fine, come hai detto tu, è stata, è ancora una parte fondamentale della mia vita. Allora, partirei dalle gratificazioni, che è più bello, di cui è più bello parlare. Nella traduzione… ci sono due grossi filoni di traduzione, c'è quella tecnico-scientifica – manualistica, articoli, cose così – e quella saggistico-letteraria, e sono due mondi a parte. La saggistico-letteraria sono quindi… sono i libri – no? – i romanzi, i saggi, quelli che ti fanno lavorare con l'editoria. Nella tecnico-scientifica le gratificazioni non sono molte, devo dire la verità.

D: Certo.

S: Diciamo, se traduci un manuale non è che c'è da essere così…

D: Non c'è spazio di manovra.

S: Sì, esatto, non ci deve essere, è giusto che non ci sia, è giusto che non ci sia.

D: Sì, non puoi dare sfogo al tuo estro quando magari parli…

S: Cambiando il nome del cavo o della presa.

D: Anche perché poi esplode qualcosa e ti denunciano.

S: Esatto! Nella (traduzione) tecnico-scientifica le gratificazioni vengono per esempio da un'email di feedback del cliente che ti dice : “Oh, finalmente una traduzione fatta come si deve“, cose così. Quindi viene dal cliente che è molto soddisfatto e che ti richiama la volta dopo, o che dà il tuo nome a un altro cliente ancora e quindi in questo modo con il passaparola lavori sempre. Invece nella saggistico-letteraria lì la gratificazione è molto più grande, direi è proporzionata allo sforzo, che è molto maggiore. Quando hai in mano – o vedi in libreria, o anche in biblioteca – un volume che hai tradotto, con il tuo nome con, diciamo, tra virgolette “il tuo sudore su ogni pagina”… fortunatamente non in senso concreto. [ride]

Non letteralmente [ride].

S: C'è comunque il tuo sudore su ogni pagina e rileggi e guardi, e devo dire che è una una grandissima gratificazione. Io ho tradotto una ventina di libri e quindi… e la più grande in assoluto è stata l'unico romanzo che ho tradotto dal finlandese, nel 2012-13. Quello è stato il momento più bello della mia carriera come traduttore.

D: Ma l'hai proposto tu stesso a una casa editrice o come…?

D: Ho capito. E invece le difficoltà… vabè, mi hai detto forse… diciamo, relativamente alla traduzione tecnico-scientifica un po' la difficoltà è…

S: La difficoltà direi che è… no, se conosci il mestiere la tecnico-scientifica è più facile della letteraria.

D: Ah, è più facile. Sì, ci sono meno possibilità di traduzione, diciamo.

S: Sì, devi tradurre così e vai. Le difficoltà sono piuttosto a livello di auto-organizzazione. Quindi organizzazione del proprio tempo, essendo freelance devi far quadrare tutto, devi far quadrare famiglia, lavoro, eccetera, ma il problema è che lavori da casa e A) puoi avere distrazioni, puoi avere, devi davvero… ecco, autodisciplina, questa è la parola che stavo cercando. Quindi la prima difficoltà è avere sufficiente autodisciplina per effettivamente rispettare i tempi e i volumi di quello che devi fare, della traduzione. La seconda è a livello… può essere a livello sociale, perché è un lavoro che ti porta comunque a una buona dose di sedentarietà, e soprattutto stare da solo, no? E quindi solitudine e… diciamo, serve tanta pazienza e devi essere capace di stare con te stesso.

D: Certo.

Beh direi che è il problema di tante professioni, diciamo, da libero professionista.

S: vero, assolutamente, esatto.

D: A meno che – e la transizione, adesso… – tu non faccia il tutor.

S: Ah, bravo! [ride]

D: Ti è piaciuta questa [ride].

S: Mi è piaciuta molto. Sì.

D: Era pensata. Fai il tutor da due anni, hai detto. Parla un po'… parlaci un po', diciamo, di questo, anche delle qualità, secondo te, che un buon tutor deve possedere. Perché adesso anch'io… cioè, faccio anch'io in realtà il tutor su Italki e anche tu hai usato questo sito.

S: Sì, sì, assolutamente. Sì, innanzitutto il momento in cui ho deciso di provare questa strada è stato proprio dopo così tanti anni – più di 15 anni – come traduttore, appunto un lavoro che ti porta a stare con te stesso, pure troppo, provare qualcosa di nuovo, e ho sentito anche il bisogno di condividere con gli altri studenti di lingue non solo le mie conoscenze ma anche proprio la mia passione, no? E mi è sembrato il lavoro ideale per fare questo. E secondo me un buon tutor innanzitutto deve sapere ascoltare, sembra contraddittorio invece non esiste che comincia la lezione e mi metto a parlare io e lo studente ascolta. La prima cosa assolutamente è ascoltare lo studente, capire, capirne le esigenze, il livello attuale, i metodi affrontati fino a quel momento, già dall'inizio cercare di capire che cosa gli piace e cosa non gli piace, cosa funziona e cosa non funziona nel suo modo di studiare. E poi adattare, adattarsi allo studente, quindi capacità di adattamento assolutamente, oltre alla pazienza che è ovvio, tutti i professori e tutor devono essere pazienti, ma… perché non c'è uno studente che sia uguale all'altro. Altro motivo per cui la lezione frontale fine a se stessa non funziona, perché hai 20-30 persone completamente diverse e lo stesso metodo non può funzionare allo stesso modo per tutti.

D: Certo, con interessi diversi, approcci diversi. Ti richiede più pazienza fare il tutor o fare il traduttore?

S: Oh, bella domanda, questa. Secondo me il traduttore, comunque. Sì.

Almeno, per come la vedo io, perché per me il tutoraggio è anche uno scambio umano e quindi è quasi un appuntamento con un amico. Quando ho uno studente io ho un appuntamento con un amico che voglio aiutare più che “ah, un appuntamento di lavoro, devo fare questo, devo fare quest'altro”. Quindi la componente la componente umana maschera abbastanza il resto, quindi la componente della pazienza per… non so, perché la persona X non ha capito la stessa spiegazione, la spiegazione tre volte, devi spiegare la quarta volta… quasi la spieghi volentieri, perché stai cercando di aiutare un amico.

D: Perché dopo che non vedi una persona da due settimane e rimani chiuso in casa ti fa piacere vedere un altro essere umano.

S: Esatto! Il contatto umano.

S: È quasi terapeutico.

D: Volevo chiederti del tuo rapporto con l'Italia, dato che tu vivi all'estero da tanto tempo e con la lingua italiana, anche. Dato che ci piace imparare tante lingue però che cosa fai con la tua prima lingua?

Siccome per me lingua è identità mantenere l'italiano e un forte rapporto con italiano per me è fondamentale per trasmettere queste identità ai miei figli. Quindi io per esempio con i miei figli parlo solo e soltanto italiano.

D: Sì?

S: E per me è fondamentale che loro lo apprendano e lo sviluppino come lingua madre, come una delle lingue madri, perché è veicolo di identità. Per sentirsi davvero italiano non dico che bisogna per forza parlare l'italiano, ma diciamo che è una componente estremamente fondamentale.

D: Ok, interessante, interessante.

S: Se dovessi… ti dico un'altra cosa, se dovessi pian piano perdere il mio rapporto forte con l'italiano, forse la mia italianità andrebbe piano piano scemando.

D: Sì, in un certo senso è quello che succede, diciamo, agli immigrati di seconda generazione, ai figli di immigrati che perdono la lingua e che se non fanno nulla magari perdono questa parte della loro identità, perché cosa ti rimane di italiano? Magari ti rimane qualche abitudine, non so, culinaria o qualche tradizione, però si la lingua è forse proprio il nucleo della cultura e dell'identità.

S: E se ci guardi, tutti quelli che hanno perso, proprio come hai descritto tu adesso, una lingua non sono mai contenti di averla persa. Vorrebbero che… per esempio vorrebbero che i loro genitori avesse(ro) parlato loro di più in una determinata lingua, vorrebbero aver mantenuto di più il contatto con la lingua. È sempre una cosa che si perde, è sempre una cosa negativa.

D: Sì, poi a volte il problema è che i genitori erano siciliani e non parlavano italiano e quindi gli parlavano in dialetto, poi avevano un'idea dell'italiano che era completamente diverso da…

S: Sì, questo succede, sì.

D: Quindi tu hai vissuto…- in quanti paesi hai vissuto? Fuori dall'Italia?

S: Ah, giusto, ho vissuto in Italia, in Germania e in Belgio, solo in tre Paesi.

D: Ok, ma in Finlandia quindi non hai mai vissuto, (ci) sei stato…

S: (Ci) sono stato tantissime volte, ci andiamo almeno una volta all'anno, però non ho mai vissuto stabilmente.

D: Potresti… – so che è una domanda ampia, magari, non rimane più molto tempo, però – fare un raffronto tra l'Italia e l'estero. Che cosa ti dà l'Italia che non ti l'estero e viceversa? Che poi l'estero, vabè, dipende dal paese, sì, certo…

S: Sì, certo, dipende molto dal paese. Beh, in ogni paese si trovano aspetti positivi e aspetti negativi, su questo penso che siamo tutti d'accordo. Il paese perfetto ancora non si è trovato. Ma guarda, per esempio, in Germania io ho apprezzato tantissimo la schiettezza, la franchezza delle persone e l'affidabilità. Sembra un cliché e invece è vero. Se qualcuno mi diceva “ci vediamo fra un'ora là a bere qualcosa” era là, dopo un'ora era là. Ok?

D: Sì. E questo magari ti responsabilizza, perché dici “se non sono lì tra un ora mi prendo un cazziatone“.

S: [ride] Sì, ti responsabilizza, ma se ti piace che le cose funzionino così ti dà fiducia, non so come posso dirti, ti dà fiducia nel prossimo, direi. Con alcuni italiani spesso succede che si dice “ci vediamo quel giorno lì a quell'ora lì” e poi dopo ti danno buca. Dare buca.

D: Sì, oppure o si prende accordo di vedersi, non so, 9/9:15, che già lì c'è una certa indeterminatezza, poi arrivi alle 9:45 (nove e tre quarti).

S: “Eh, scusa, sai, perché avevo… – non so -dovevo bere il caffè”. Va bene.

D: Però alla fine non ci arrabbiamo neanche troppo, dipende dalle persone, però siamo molto tolleranti.

S: Vero.

D: E secondo me questo… un po', diciamo, non ci fa cambiare su alcune cose.

S: Sì sì, esatto, ci dà inerzia. No, è vero che in Germania c'è un attenzione alle regole che è notevole. Io con i miei amici avevo un motto, diciamo così, un modo di prendere in giro la Germania dicendo “in Germania non si può”. Cioè, praticamente in tedesco sarebbe “man darft nicht”. In Germania non si può, perché c'è sempre qualcosa che non si può fare, che non deve, che non si dovrebbe fare. C'è sempre un qualche divieto vigente, dovunque dovunque tu vada. Però alla fine questa attenzione alle regole ti dà anche la possibilità di far funzionare bene le cose, bisogna essere, insomma, sinceri e ammettere che ti permette di far funzionare le cose meglio che altrove. Ci sono anche delle cose dell'Italia che…

D: Sì, volevo chiederti questo, se c'è qualcosa che ti manca dell'Italia.

S: Sì, oltre agli affetti, diciamo, più vicini, come la famiglia, gli amici, direi la focaccia [ride].

D: La focaccia! [ride]

S. La focaccia, ragazzi, non si trova da nessuna parte, non si trova da nessuna parte. La cerco disperatamente ma non riesco a trovarla.

D: Come i grissini per un torinese.

S: Bravo, bravo, esatto i grissini.

D: Neanche sanno cosa sono (meglio: siano), figuriamoci trovarli.

S: Quelli buoni, davvero. No, a parte gli scherzi sì, alcuni alcune cose, appunto, del mondo culinario, anche se io sono molto eclettico da questo punto di vista, mangio veramente di tutto e… non sono tra gli italiani che, insomma, si fanno mandare la pasta da casa.

D: La caciotta per posta aerea.

S: [ride] Esatto, esatto. No.

D: Sì, sì, è vero, ho conosciuto persone di questo tipo.

S: Sì, sì, ma anche tipo le arance se le fanno mandare qui. Io ne conosco anche qui, arance mandate dalla Sicilia, o… così. Non sono a quei livelli, però ci sono determinate cose come il caffè espresso del bar macchiato caldo. Quello, ragazzi, è difficile da trovare. Anche nei posti italiani.

D: Soprattutto a un prezzo, diciamo, italiano.

S: Bravo, bravissimo!

D: Perché da noi al nord €1, al sud anche €0,50, – S: Magari! – vai all'estero, sempre €2, €2,50, €3 a volte, l'espresso o il macchiato, e a volte c'è una differenza anche tra macchiato ed espresso che da noi non c'è.

S: Che da noi non c'è! Questa cosa è incomprensibile per un…

D: E noi pensiamo “infami! Per un po' di latte mi fai pagare €0,50 (cinquanta centesimi) in più, ma cos'è?! C'è l'oro in quel (caffè)…

S: [ride] Esatto, verissimo!

D: Come diresti, secondo te, che veniamo visti noi italiani all'estero, almeno nei paesi dove hai vissuto tu, positivamente e negativamente.

S: Sì, c'è un misto, c'è un misto. Gli aspetti positivi sono quelli del sapersi godere la vita, dell'essere aperti, del saper ridere e scherzare, un'apertura che è anche fisica quasi, no? Quindi contatto fisico sin dall'inizio, con i famosi bacini… qui in Belgio devo dire…-

D: Però penso che si faccia un po' di tutta l'erba un fascio fuori dall'Italia, no? Quindi se sei milanese è come essere pugliese o siciliano, no?

S: Esatto, esatto! Non c'è questa capacità di discernere la provenienza, nord, sud, centro, ma anche stando nella stessa zona, diciamo Nord, ci sono differenze abissali tra Veneto e Piemonte, ecc. Ma, comunque sia, invece dal punto di vista… sotto un aspetto più negativo, invece, forse l'inaffidabilità che a volte, insomma, si si inserisce, ecco, nei pensieri probabilmente degli stranieri, sul fatto che “ah, sei italiano, allora devo stare magari attento a quello che dici, perché non è detto che tu faccia esattamente quello che dici”. Ecco, questo un pochino dà fastidio.

D: O magari arrivi un quarto d'ora in ritardo…

S: “Eh, l'italiano!”.

D: E pensano, “ah, perché è italiano”, magari a te era esplosa una gomma, o…

S: Magari eri partito due ore prima ma hai avuto un contrattempo. Ho risposto?

D: Sì, direi di sì. Ah, mi stavo dimenticando la domanda più importante, che faccio sempre: pasta o pizza?

S: Ah già… ehm questa… questa è la più difficile di tutte. [ride] Non si può avere tutte e due?

D: No, perché io faccio questa domanda sia a italiani che agli stranieri. Gli stranieri mi sembra che abbiano una risposta sempre pronta, mentre io da italiano dico “no, com'è possibile, vi vedo un po' [troppo sicuri]…

S: Ah, ok! Bene! Siamo d'accordo, allora, bene.

D: No infatti, non è possibile scegliere, la risposta giusta è “entrambe” oppure “non posso scegliere”.

S: Sai? Esatto, sai qual è la risposta migliore per me? Dipende dal momento.

D: Sì, è vero.

D: Ma questo bisogno all'estero riesci a soddisfarlo?

S: Sì, riesci a soddisfarlo, devi conoscere i posti giusti. Se conosci i posti giusti riesci a soddisfarlo al top, se invece non conosci posti giusti lo soddisfi ma, insomma ti rimane quel quel sentimento che qualcosa è mancato, ecco.

S: E poi parliamo anche del fatto che se uno dice “pasta”, sì, ma con quale sugo? E quale pasta? Ci sono tante paste diverse, i sughi sono diversi.

D: Sì, infatti, infatti, ognuno poi ha i suoi momenti forse, non lo so.

S: E poi dipende anche da dove sei, quando sono in Toscana sugo di cinghiale, subito. A Roma non si può dire di no all'amatriciana.

D: Va bene, su queste note possiamo concludere la nostra chiacchierata. Grazie per aver preso parte.

S: Grazie a te, è stato davvero un piacere.
