Come non m'avevano finora accoppato? Eh, non m'accoppavano, signori, perché, com'io non m'ero finora staccato da me per vedermi, e vivevo come un cieco nelle condizioni in cui ero stato messo, senza considerare quali fossero, perché in esse ero nato e cresciuto e m'erano perciò naturali; cosí anche per gli altri era naturale ch'io fossi cosí; mi conoscevano cosí; non potevano pensarmi altrimenti, e tutti potevano ormai guardarmi quasi senz'odio e anche sorridere a questo buon figliuolo feroce.

VII. Parentesi necessaria, una per tutti

Marco di Dio e sua moglie Diamante ebbero la ventura d'essere (se ben ricordo) le prime mie vittime. Voglio dire, le prime designate all'esperimento della distruzione d'un Moscarda.

Ma con qual diritto ne parlo? con qual diritto do qui aspetto e voce ad altri fuori di me? Che ne so io? Come posso parlarne? Li vedo da fuori, e naturalmente quali sono per me cioè in una forma nella quale certo essi non si riconoscerebbero. E non faccio dunque agli altri lo stesso torto di cui tanto mi lamento io?

Ma voi, lo so, non vi volete ancora arrendere ed esclamate:

«E i fatti? Oh, perdio, e non ci sono i dati di fatto?»

«Sí, che ci sono.»

Nascere è un fatto. Nascere in un tempo anziché in un altro ve l'ho già detto; e da questo o da quel padre, e in questa o quella condizione; nascere maschio o femmina; in Lapponia o nel centro dell'Africa; e bello o brutto; con la gobba o senza gobba: fatti. E anche se perdete un occhio, è un fatto e potete anche perderli tutti e due, e se siete pittore è il peggior fatto che vi possa capitare.

Tempo, spazio, necessità. Sorte, fortuna, casi: trappole tutte della vita. Volete essere? C'è questo. In astratto non si è. Bisogna che s'intrappoli l'essere in una forma, e per alcun tempo si finisca in essa, qua o là, cosí o cosí. E ogni cosa, finché dura, porta con sé la pena della sua forma, la pena d'esser cosí e di non poter piú essere altrimenti. Quello sbiobbo là, pare una burla, uno scherzo compatibile sí e no per un minuto solo e poi basta; poi dritto, su, svelto, agile, alto.... ma che! sempre cosí, per tutta la vita che è una sola; e bisogna che si rassegni a passarla tutta tutta cosí.

E come le forme, gli atti.

Quando un atto è compiuto, è quello; non si cangia piú. Quando uno, comunque, abbia agito, anche senza che poi si senta e si ritrovi negli atti compiuti, ciò che ha fatto, resta: come una prigione per lui. Se avete preso moglie, o anche materialmente, se avete rubato e siete stato scoperto; se avete ucciso, come spire e tentacoli vi avviluppano le conseguenze delle vostre azioni; e vi grava sopra, attorno, come un'aria densa, irrespirabile, la responsabilità che per quelle azioni e le conseguenze di esse, non volute o non previste, vi siete assunta. E come potete piú liberarvi?

Già. Ma che intendete dire con questo? Che gli atti come le forme determinano la realtà mia o la vostra? E come? perché? Che siano una prigione, nessuno può negare. Ma se volete affermar questo soltanto, state in guardia che non affermate nulla contro di me, perché io dico appunto e sostengo anzi questo che sono una prigione e la piú ingiusta che si possa immaginare.

Mi pareva, santo Dio, d'avervelo dimostrato! Conosco Tizio. Secondo la conoscenza che ne ho, gli do una realtà: per me. Ma Tizio lo conoscete anche voi, e certo quello che conoscete voi non è quello stesso che conosco io perché ciascuno di noi lo conosce a suo modo e gli dà a suo modo una realtà. Ora anche per se stesso Tizio ha tante realtà per quanti di noi conosce, perché in un modo si conosce con me e in un altro con voi e con un terzo, con un quarto e via dicendo. Il che vuol dire che Tizio è realmente uno con me, uno con voi, un altro con un terzo, un altro con un quarto e via dicendo, pur avendo l'illusione anche lui, anzi lui specialmente, d'esser uno per tutti. Il guajo è questo; o lo scherzo, se vi piace meglio chiamarlo cosí. Compiamo un atto. Crediamo in buona fede d'esser tutti in quell'atto. Ci accorgiamo purtroppo che non è cosí, e che l'atto è invece sempre e solamente dell'uno dei tanti che siamo o che possiamo essere, quando, per un caso sciaguratissimo, all'improvviso vi restiamo come agganciati e sospesi: ci accorgiamo, voglio dire, di non essere tutti in quell'atto, e che dunque un'atroce ingiustizia sarebbe giudicarci da quello solo, tenerci agganciati e sospesi a esso, alla gogna, per un'intera esistenza, come se questa fosse tutta assommata in quell'atto solo.

«Ma io sono anche questo, e quest'altro, e poi quest'altro!» ci mettiamo a gridare.

Tanti, eh già; tanti ch'erano fuori dell'atto di quell'uno, e che non avevano nulla o ben poco da vedere con esso. Non solo; ma quell'uno stesso, cioè quella realtà che in un momento ci siamo data e che in quel momento ha compiuto l'atto, spesso poco dopo è sparito del tutto; tanto vero che il ricordo dell'atto resta in noi, se pure resta, come un sogno angoscioso, inesplicabile. Un altro, dieci altri, tutti quegli altri che noi siamo o possiamo essere, sorgono a uno a uno in noi a domandarci come abbiamo potuto far questo; e non ce lo sappiamo piú spiegare.

Realtà passate.

Se i fatti non son tanto gravi, queste realtà passate le chiamiamo inganni. Sí, va bene; perché veramente ogni realtà è un inganno. Proprio quell'inganno per cui ora dico a voi che n'avete un altro davanti.

«Voi sbagliate!»

Siamo molto superficiali, io e voi. Non andiamo ben addentro allo scherzo, che è piú profondo e radicale, cari miei. E consiste in questo: che l'essere agisce necessariamente per forme, che sono le apparenze ch'esso si crea, e a cui noi diamo valore di realtà. Un valore che cangia, naturalmente, secondo l'essere in quella forma e in quell'atto ci appare.

E ci deve sembrare per forza che gli altri hanno sbagliato; che una data forma, un dato atto non è questo e non è cosí. Ma inevitabilmente, poco dopo, se ci spostiamo d'un punto, ci accorgiamo che abbiamo sbagliato anche noi, e che non è questo e non è cosí; sicché alla fine siamo costretti a riconoscere che non sarà mai né questo né cosí in nessun modo stabile e sicuro; ma ora in un modo ora in un altro, che tutti a un certo punto ci parranno sbagliati, o tutti veri, che è lo stesso; perché una realtà non ci fu data e non c'è, ma dobbiamo farcela noi, se vogliamo essere: e non sarà mai una per tutti, una per sempre, ma di continuo e infinitamente mutabile. La facoltà d'illuderci che la realtà d'oggi sia la sola vera, se da un canto ci sostiene, dall'altro ci precipita in un vuoto senza fine, perché la realtà d'oggi é destinata a scoprire l'illusione domani. E la vita non conclude. Non può concludere. Se domani conclude, è finita.

VIII. Caliamo un poco

Vi pare che l'abbia presa troppo alta? E caliamo un poco. La palla è elastica; ma per rimbalzare bisogna che tocchi terra. Tocchiamo terra e facciamola rivenire alla mano.

Di quali fatti volete parlare? Del fatto che io sono nato, anno tale, mese tale, giorno tale nella nobile città di Richieri, nella casa in via tale, numero tale, dal signor Tal dei Tali e dalla signora Tal dei Tali; battezzato nella chiesa madre di giorni sei; mandato a scuola a anni sei; ammogliato d'anni ventitré; alto di statura un metro e sessantotto; rosso di pelo, ecc. ecc. ? Sono i miei connotati. Dati di fatto, dite voi. E vorreste desumerne la mia realtà? Ma questi stessi dati che per sé non dicono nulla, credete che importino una valutazione uguale per tutti quand'anche mi rappresentassero intero e preciso, dove mi rappresenterebbero? in quale realtà?

Nella vostra, che non è quella d'un altro: e poi d'un altro; e poi d'un altro. C'è forse una realtà sola, una per tutti? Ma se abbiamo visto che non ce n'è una neanche per ciascuno di noi, poiché in noi stessi la nostra cangia di continuo! E allora?

Ecco qua, terra terra. Siete in cinque? Venite con me.

Questa è la casa in cui sono nato, anno tale, mese tale, giorno tale. Ebbene, dal fatto che topograficamente e per l'altezza e la lunghezza e il numero delle finestre poste qua sul davanti questa casa è la stessa per tutti; dal fatto che io per tutti voi cinque vi sono nato, anno tale, mese tale, giorno tale, rosso di pelo e alto ora un metro e sessantotto, segue forse che voi tutti e cinque diate la stessa realtà a questa casa e a me? A voi che abitate una catapecchia, questa casa sembra un bel palazzo; a voi che avete un certo gusto artistico, sembra una volgarissima casa; voi che passate malvolentieri per la via dov'essa sorge perché vi ricorda un triste episodio della vostra vita, la guardate in cagnesco, voi, invece, con occhio affettuoso perché, lo so, qua dirimpetto abitava la vostra povera mamma che fu buona amica della mia.

E io che vi sono nato? Oh Dio! Quand'anche per tutt'e cinque voialtri in questa casa, che è una e cinque, fosse nato l'anno tale, il mese tale, il giorno tale un imbecille, credete che sia lo stesso imbecille per tutti? Sarò per l'uno imbecille perché lascio Quantorzo direttore della banca e Firbo consulente legale, cioè proprio per la ragione per cui mi stima avvedutissimo l'altro, che crede invece di veder lampante la mia imbecillità nel fatto che conduco a spasso ogni giorno la cagnolina di mia moglie, e cosí via.

Cinque imbecilli. Uno in ciascuno. Cinque imbecilli che vi stanno davanti, come li vedete da fuori, in me che sono uno e cinque come la casa, tutti con questo nome di Moscarda niente per sé, neanche uno, se serve a disegnar cinque differenti imbecilli che, sí, tut'e cinque si volteranno se chiamate: «Moscarda!» ma ciascuno con quell'aspetto che voi gli date; cinque aspetti; se rido, cinque sorrisi, e via dicendo.

E non sarà per voi, ogni atto ch'io compia, l'atto d'uno di questi cinque? E potrà essere lo stesso, quest'atto, se i cinque sono differenti? Ciascuno di voi lo interpreterà, gli darà senso e valore a seconda della realtà che m'ha data.

Uno dirà:

«Moscarda ha fatto questo.»

L'altro dirà:

«Ma che, questo! Ha fatto ben altro!»

E il terzo:

«Per me ha fatto benissimo. Doveva fare cosí!»

Il quarto:

«Ma che cosí e cosí! Ha fatto malissimo. Doveva fare invece...»

E il quinto:

«Che doveva fare? Ma se non ha fatto niente!»

IX. Chiudiamo la parentesi

Tuttavia mi sforzerò di darvi, non dubitate, quella realtà che voi credete d'avere; cioè a dire, di volervi in me come voi vi volete. Non è possibile, ormai lo sappiamo bene, giacché, per quanti sforzi io faccia di rappresentarvi a modo vostro, sarà sempre "un modo vostro" soltanto per me, non "un modo vostro" per voi e per gli altri.

Ma scusate: se per voi io non ho altra realtà fuori di quella che voi mi date, e sono pronto a riconoscere e ad ammettere ch'essa non è meno vera di quella che potrei darmi io; che essa anzi per voi è la sola vera (e Dio sa che cos'è codesta realtà che voi mi date! ); vorreste lamentarvi adesso di quella che vi darò io, con tutta la buona volontà di rappresentarvi quanto piú mi sarà possibile a modo vostro?

Non presumo che siate come vi rappresento io. Ho affermato già che non siete neppure quell'uno che vi rappresentate a voi stesso, ma tanti a un tempo, secondo tutte le vostre possibilità d'essere, e i casi, le relazioni e le circostanze. E dunque, che torto vi fo io? Me lo fate voi il torto, credendo ch'io non abbia o non possa avere altra realtà fuori di codesta che mi date voi; la quale è vostra soltanto, credete: una vostra idea, quella che vi siete fatta di me, una possibilità d'essere come voi la sentite, come a voi pare, come la riconoscete in voi possibile; giacché di ciò che possa essere io per me, non solo non potete saper nulla voi, ma nulla neppure io stesso.

X. Due visite

Mandato via. Chi? Il vostro amico? Credete sul serio d'aver mandato via lui?

Rifletteteci un poco.

Il vostro vecchio amico, in sé e per sé, non aveva nessuna ragione d'esser mandato via, sopravvenendo il nuovo. I due, tra loro, non si conoscevano affatto, li avete presentati voi l'uno all'altro; e potevano insieme trattenersi una mezz'oretta nel vostro salotto a chiacchierare del piú e del meno. Nessun imbarazzo né per l'uno né per l'altro.

L'imbarazzo l'avete provato voi, e tanto piú vivo e intollerabile, quanto piú, anzi, vedevate quei due a poco a poco acconciarsi tra loro a fare accordo insieme. L'avete subito rotto quell'accordo. Perché? Ma perché voi (non volete ancora capirlo?) voi, all'improvviso, cioè all'arrivo del vostro nuovo amico, vi siete scoperto due, uno cosí dall'altro diverso, che per forza a un certo punto, non resistendo piú, avete dovuto mandarne via uno. Non il vostro vecchio amico, no, avete mandato via voi stesso, quell'uno che siete per il vostro vecchio amico, perché lo avete sentito tutt'altro da quello che siete, o volete essere, per il nuovo.

Incompatibili non erano tra loro quei due, estranei l'uno all'altro, garbatissimi entrambi e fatti fors'anche per intendersi a maraviglia; ma i due voi che all'improvviso avete scoperto in voi stesso. Non avete potuto tollerare che le cose dell'uno fossero mescolate con quelle dell'altro, non avendo esse propriamente nulla di comune tra loro. Nulla, nulla, giacché voi per il vostro vecchio amico avete una realtà e un'altra per il nuovo, cosí diverse in tutto da avvertire voi stesso che rivolgendovi all'uno, l'altro sarebbe rimasto a guardarvi sbalordito; non vi avrebbe piú riconosciuto; avrebbe esclamato tra sé:

«Ma come? è questo? è cosí?»
