5.7 Storia di un'associazione commerciale

— Al nome di Ada Malfenti o Ada Speier? - domandò scherzosamente ad Ada.

Essa si strinse nelle spalle e disse:

— Lo saprete voi due come sia meglio.

— Ti dirò poi come devi fare le altre registrazioni, - aggiunse Guido con una brevità che mi offese.

Ero sul punto di interrompergli la sonnolenza cui s'era subito abbandonato, dichiarandogli che se voleva delle registrazioni se le facesse da sé.

Intanto fu portata una grande tazza di caffè nero che Ada gli porse. Egli trasse le braccia di sotto le coperte e con ambe le mani si portò la tazza alla bocca. Ora, col naso nella tazza, pareva proprio un bambino.

Quando mi congedai, egli m'assicurò che il giorno seguente sarebbe venuto in ufficio.

Io avevo già salutata Ada e perciò fui non poco sorpreso quand'essa mi raggiunse alla porta d'uscita. Ansava:

— Te ne prego, Zeno! Vieni qui per un istante. Ho bisogno di dirti una cosa.

La seguii nel salottino ove ero stato poco prima e da cui adesso si sentiva il pianto di uno dei gemelli.

Restammo in piedi guardandoci in faccia. Essa ansava ancora e per questo, solo per questo, io per un momento pensai che m'avesse fatto entrare in quella stanzuccia buia per domandarmi l'amore che le avevo offerto.

Nell'oscurità i suoi grandi occhi erano terribili. Pieno d'angoscia mi domandavo quello che avrei dovuto fare. Non sarebbe stato mio dovere di prenderla fra le mie braccia e risparmiarle così di dover domandarmi qualche cosa? In un istante quale avvicendarsi di propositi!

È una delle grandi difficoltà della vita d'indovinare ciò che una donna vuole. Ascoltarne le parole non serve, perché tutto un discorso può essere annullato da uno sguardo e neppure questo sa dirigerci quando ci si trova con lei, per suo volere, in una comoda buia stanzuccia.

Non sapendo indovinare lei, io tentavo d'intendere me stesso. Quale era il mio desiderio? Volevo baciare quegli occhi e quel corpo scheletrico? Non sapevo dare una risposta decisa perché poco prima l'avevo vista nella severa castità di quella soffice vestaglia, desiderabile come la fanciulla ch'io avevo amata.

Alla sua ansia s'era intanto associato anche il pianto e così s'allungò il tempo in cui io non sapevo quello ch'ella volesse e che io desiderassi. Finalmente, con voce spezzata, essa mi disse ancora una volta il suo amore per Guido, così ch'io non ebbi più con lei né doveri né diritti. Balbettò:

— Augusta m'ha detto che tu vorresti lasciare Guido e non occuparti più dei fatti suoi. Devo pregarti di continuare ad assisterlo. Io non credo ch'egli sia in grado di fare da sé.

Mi domandava di continuare a fare quello che già facevo. Era poco, ben poco ed io tentai di concedere di più:

— Giacché lo vuoi, continuerò ad assistere Guido; farò anzi del mio meglio per assisterlo più efficacemente di quanto non abbia fatto finora.

Ecco di nuovo l'esagerazione! Me ne avvidi nello stesso momento in cui v'incappavo, ma non seppi rinunziarvi. Io volevo dire ad Ada (o forse mentirle) che ella mi premeva. Essa non voleva il mio amore, ma il mio appoggio ed io le parlavo in modo che potesse credere ch'io ero pronto a concederle ambedue.

Ada m'afferrò subito la mano. Ebbi un brivido. Offre molto una donna porgendo la mano! Ho sempre sentito questo. Quando mi fu concessa una mano mi parve di afferrare tutta una donna. Sentii la sua statura e nell'evidente confronto fra la mia e la sua, mi parve di fare atto somigliante all'abbraccio. Certo fu un contatto intimo.

Ella soggiunse:

— Io devo ritornare subito a Bologna in casa di salute e mi sarà di grande tranquillità di saperti con lui.

— Resterò con lui! - risposi con aspetto rassegnato. Ada dovette credere che quel mio aspetto di rassegnazione significasse il sacrificio ch'io consentivo di farle. Invece io stavo rassegnandomi a ritornare ad una vita molto ma molto comune, visto ch'essa non ci pensava di seguirmi in quella d'eccezione ch'io avevo sognata.

Feci uno sforzo per discendere del tutto a terra, e scopersi immediatamente nella mia mente un problema di contabilità non semplice. Dovevo accreditare dell'importo dell'assegno che tenevo in tasca il conto di Ada. Questo era chiaro e invece non chiaro affatto come tale registrazione avrebbe potuto toccare il conto Utili e Danni. Non ne dissi nulla per il dubbio che forse Ada non sapesse che c'era a questo mondo un libro mastro contenente dei conti di sì varia natura.

Ma non volli uscire da quella stanza senz'aver detto altro. Fu così che invece di parlare di contabilità, dissi una frase che in quel momento gettai lì negligentemente solo per dire qualche cosa, ma che poi sentii di grande importanza per me per Ada e per Guido, ma prima di tutto per me stesso che compromisi una volta di più. Tanto importante fu quella frase che per lunghi anni ricordai come, con movimento trascurato, avessi mosse le labbra per dirla in quello stanzino buio in presenza dei quattro ritratti dei genitori di Ada e Guido sposatisi anch'essi fra di loro sulla parete. Dissi:

— Hai finito con lo sposare un uomo ancora più bizzarro di me, Ada!

Come la parola sa varcare il tempo! Essa stessa avvenimento che si riallaccia agli avvenimenti! Diveniva avvenimento, tragico avvenimento, perché diretta ad Ada. Nel mio pensiero non avrei mai saputo evocare con tanta vivacità l'ora in cui Ada aveva scelto fra me e Guido su quella via soleggiata ove, dopo giorni di attesa, avevo saputo incontrarla per camminarle accanto e affaticarmi di conquistare il suo riso che scioccamente accoglievo come una promessa! E ricordai anche che allora io ero già reso inferiore per l'imbarazzo dei muscoli delle mie gambe mentre Guido si moveva ancora più disinvolto di Ada stessa e non era segnato da alcuna inferiorità se come tale non si avesse dovuto considerare quello strano bastone ch'egli si adattava di portare.

Essa disse a bassa voce:

— È vero!

Poi, sorridendo affettuosamente:

— Ma sono lieta per Augusta che tu sia stato tanto migliore di quanto ti credevo. - Poi, con un sospiro: - Tanto, che mi attenua un poco il dolore che Guido non sia quello che io m'aspettavo.

Io tacevo sempre, ancora dubbioso. Mi pareva che m'avesse detto che io fossi divenuto quello ch'essa si era aspettata dovesse divenire Guido. Era dunque amore? Ed essa disse ancora:

— Sei il migliore uomo della nostra famiglia, la nostra fiducia, la nostra speranza. - Mi riafferrò la mano e io la serrai forse troppo. Essa me la sottrasse però tanto presto, che fu dissipato ogni dubbio. E in quella buia stanzuccia io seppi di nuovo come dovevo comportarmi. Forse per attenuare il suo atto mi mandò un'altra carezza: - È perché ti so così che mi dolgo tanto di averti fatto soffrire. Hai veramente sofferto tanto?

Io ficcai subito l'occhio nell'oscurità del mio passato per ritrovare quel dolore e mormorai:

— Sì!

— Molto! Sì!

Molto!

Ada singhiozzava addirittura: - Mi dispiace tanto, tanto!

Si fece forza e disse:

— Ma adesso tu ami Augusta!

Un singhiozzo l'interruppe per un istante ed io trasalii non sapendo se essa si fosse fermata per sentire se io avrei affermato o negato quell'amore. Per mia fortuna non mi diede il tempo di parlare perché continuò:

— Adesso c'è fra noi due e dev'esserci un vero affetto fraterno. Io ho bisogno di te. Per quel ragazzo di là, io ormai dovrò essere una madre, dovrò proteggerlo. Vuoi aiutarmi nel mio difficile compito?

Nella sua grande emozione ella quasi s'appoggiava a me, come nel sogno. Ma io m'attenni alle sue parole. Mi domandava un affetto fraterno; l'impegno di amore che pensavo mi legasse a lei si trasformava così in un altro suo diritto, epperò le promisi subito di aiutare Guido, di aiutare lei, di fare quello che avrebbe voluto. Se fossi stato più sereno avrei dovuto parlare della mia insufficienza al compito ch'essa m'assegnava, ma avrei distrutta tutta l'indimenticabile emozione di quel momento. Del resto ero tanto commosso che non potevo sentire la mia insufficenza. In quel momento pensavo che non esistessero affatto per nessuno delle insufficienze. Anche quella di Guido poteva essere soffiata via con alcune parole che gli dessero il necessario entusiasmo.

Ada m'accompagnò sul pianerottolo e restò lì, appoggiata alla ringhiera, a vedermi scendere. Così aveva fatto sempre Carla, ma era strano lo facesse Ada che amava Guido, ed io gliene fui tanto grato che, prima di passare alla seconda branca della scala, alzai anche una volta il capo per vederla e salutarla. Così si faceva in amore ma, si vedeva, anche quando si trattava di amore fraterno.

Così me ne andai via lieto. Essa m'aveva accompagnato fino su quel pianerottolo, e non oltre. Non v'erano più dubbii. Restavamo così: io l'avevo amata ed ora amavo Augusta, ma il mio antico amore le dava il diritto alla mia devozione. Essa poi continuava ad amare quel fanciullo, ma riservava a me un grande affetto fraterno e non solo perché avevo sposata sua sorella, ma per indennizzarmi dei dolori che m'aveva procurati e che costituivano un legame segreto fra di noi. Tutto ciò era ben dolce, di un sapore raro in questa vita. Tanta dolcezza non avrebbe potuto darmi una vera salute? Infatti io camminai quel giorno senza imbarazzo e senza dolori, mi sentii magnanimo e forte e nel cuore un sentimento di sicurezza che m'era nuovo. Dimenticai di aver tradito mia moglie ed anche nel modo più sconcio oppure mi proposi di non farlo più ciò che si equivale, e mi sentii veramente quale Ada mi voleva, l'uomo migliore della famiglia.

Avrei fatto quel poco che potevo per Guido, ma un proposito simile non aumentava né l'aria nei miei polmoni né il sangue nelle mie vene. Per Ada mi rimase nel cuore una grande nuova dolcezza rinnovata ogni qualvolta essa nelle sue lettere ad Augusta mi ricordava con qualche parola affettuosa. Le ricambiavo di cuore il suo affetto e accompagnavo la sua cura coi voti migliori. Magari le fosse riuscito di riconquistare tutta la sua salute e tutta la sua bellezza!

Il giorno seguente, Guido venne in ufficio e si mise subito a studiare le registrazioni ch'egli voleva fare. Propose:

— Storniamo ora il Conto Utili e Danni a metà con quello di Ada.

Era proprio questo ch'egli voleva e che non serviva a nulla. Se io fossi stato l'esecutore indifferente della sua volontà come lo ero stato fino a pochi giorni prima, con tutta semplicità avrei eseguite quelle registrazioni e non ci avrei pensato più. Invece sentii il dovere di dirgli tutto; mi pareva di stimolarlo al lavoro facendogli sapere che non era tanto facile di cancellare la perdita in cui si era incorsi.

Gli spiegai che a quanto ne sapevo io, Ada aveva dato quel denaro perché fosse posto a suo credito nel suo conto e ciò non avveniva più se noi lo saldavamo ficcandoci dentro, dall'altra parte, metà della perdita del bilancio. Poi, che la parte della perdita ch'egli voleva trasportare nel conto proprio, vi apparteneva e vi avrebbe anzi appartenuta tutta, ma ciò non era il suo annullamento e invece la constatazione della stessa. Ci avevo pensato tanto che m'era facile di spiegargli tutto, e conclusi:

— Ammettendo che si capitasse - così non voglia Iddio! - nelle circostanze previste dall'Olivi, la perdita sarebbe tuttavia risultata evidente dai nostri libri, non appena fossero stati visti da un perito pratico.

Egli mi guardava attonito. Sapeva abbastanza di contabilità per intendermi e invece non ci arrivava perché il desiderio gl'impediva di adattarsi all'evidenza. Poi aggiunsi, per fargli veder chiaramente tutto:

— Vedi che non c'era nessuno scopo che Ada facesse tale versamento?

Quando finalmente comprese, impallidì fortemente e si mise a rosicchiarsi nervosamente le unghie. Restò trasognato, ma volle vincersi e con quel suo comico fare di comandante, dispose che tuttavia quelle registrazioni fossero fatte, aggiungendo:

— Per esonerarti di ogni responsabilità sono disposto di scrivere io nei libri e magari di firmare!

Compresi! Voleva continuare a sognare in luogo ove non c'è posto a sogni: la partita doppia!

Ricordai quanto avevo promesso a me stesso là sull'erta di via Belvedere, eppoi ad Ada, nel salottino buio di casa sua e parlai generosamente:

— Farò subito le registrazioni che desideri: non sento il bisogno di essere difeso dalla tua firma. Sono qui per aiutarti, non per ostacolarti!

Egli mi strinse affettuosamente la mano:

— La vita è difficile - disse - ed è un grande conforto per me di avere accanto un amico quale sei tu.

Ci guardammo commossi negli occhi. I suoi lucevano. Per sottrarmi alla commozione che minacciava anche me, dissi ridendo:

— La vita non è difficile, ma molto originale.

Ed anche lui rise di cuore.

Poi egli mi restò accanto per vedere come avrei saldato quel Conto Utili e Danni. Fu fatto in pochi minuti. Quel conto morì, ma trascinò nel nulla anche il conto di Ada a cui però notammo il credito in un libercolo, per il caso in cui ogni altra testimonianza in seguito a qualche cataclisma fosse sparita e per avere l'evidenza che dovevamo pagarle gl'interessi. L'altra metà del Conto Utili e Danni andò ad aumentare il Dare già considerevole del conto di Guido.

Per loro natura i contabili sono un genere di animali molto disposti all'ironia. Facendo quelle registrazioni io pensavo: «Un conto - quello intitolato agli utili e danni - era morto ammazzato, l'altro - quello di Ada - era morto di morte naturale perché non ci riusciva di tenerlo in vita e invece non sapevamo ammazzare quello di Guido, ch'essendo di un debitore dubbioso, tenuto così, era una vera tomba aperta nella nostra azienda».

Di contabilità si continuò a parlare per lungo tempo, in quell'ufficio. Guido s'arrabattava per trovare un altro modo che avesse potuto proteggerlo meglio da eventuali insidie (così egli le chiamava) della legge. Io credo che egli abbia anche consultato qualche contabile perché un giorno venne in ufficio a propormi di distruggere i libri vecchi dopo averne fatti di nuovi sui quali avremmo registrata una vendita falsa ad un nome qualunque che avrebbe poi figurato di averla pagata con l'importo prestato da Ada. Era doloroso dover disilluderlo perché era corso all'ufficio animato da una tanta speranza! Proponeva una falsificazione che proprio mi ripugnava. Finora non avevamo fatto altro che spostare delle realtà minacciando di danneggiare chi implicitamente vi aveva dato il suo consenso. Ora, invece, egli voleva inventare dei movimenti di merci. Vedevo anch'io che così e solo così, si poteva cancellare ogni traccia della perdita subita ma a quale prezzo! Bisognava anche inventare il nome del compratore o prendere il consenso di chi volevamo far figurare come tale. Non avevo niente in contrario di veder distruggere i libri che pur avevo scritti con tanta cura, ma era seccante farne di nuovi. Feci delle obbiezioni che finirono col convincere Guido. Una fattura non si simula facilmente. Bisognerebbe saper falsificare anche i documenti comprovanti l'esistenza e la proprietà della merce.

Egli rinunziò al suo piano, ma il giorno seguente capitò in ufficio con un altro piano che anch'esso implicava la distruzione dei libri vecchi. Stanco di veder intralciato ogni altro lavoro da discussioni simili, protestai:

— Vedendo che ci pensi tanto, si crederebbe tu voglia proprio prepararti al fallimento! Altrimenti quale importanza può aver una diminuzione tanto esigua del tuo capitale? Finora nessuno ha il diritto di guardare nei tuoi libri. Bisogna ora lavorare, lavorare e non occuparsi di sciocchezze.

Mi confessò che quel pensiero era la sua ossessione. E come avrebbe potuto essere altrimenti? Con un po' di sfortuna poteva incappare dritto dritto in quella sanzione penale e finire in carcere!

Vedendone l'inanità, cessò dal fare delle scoperte per falsare la sua contabilità, ma non perciò riacquistò la calma. Ogni qualvolta veniva in ufficio si rabbuiava guardando i suoi libroni. Mi confessò, un giorno, che entrando nella nostra stanza gli era parso di trovarsi nell'anticamera della galera e avrebbe voluto correr via.

Un giorno mi domandò:

— Augusta sa tutto del nostro bilancio?

Arrossii perché nella domanda mi parve sentire un rimprovero. Ma evidentemente se Ada sapeva del bilancio poteva saperne anche Augusta. Non pensai subito così, ma mi parve invece di meritare il rimprovero che egli intendeva di muovermi. Perciò mormorai:

— L'avrà saputo da Ada o forse da Alberta cui Ada l'avrà detto!

Rivedevo tutti i rigagnoli che potevano condurre ad Augusta e non mi pareva con ciò di negare che essa avesse avuto tutto dalla prima fonte, cioè da me, ma di asserire che sarebbe stato inutile per me di tacere. Peccato! Se avessi invece confessato subito ch'io con Augusta non avevo segreti, mi sarei sentito tanto più leale e onesto! Un lieve fatto così, cioè la dissimulazione di un atto che sarebbe stato meglio di confessare e proclamare innocente, basta ad imbarazzare la più sincera amicizia.

— Si dice che abbiate fatti degli altri buoni affari come quello del solfato!

Poi, vedendomi allibire, mi strinse la mano e soggiunse:

— Per conto mio io vi auguro i migliori affari. Spero non ne dubiterete!

E mi lasciò. Io suppongo che i fatti nostri gli sieno stati riferiti dalla figliuola sua che frequentava al Liceo la stessa classe della piccola Anna. Non riferii a Guido la piccola indiscrezione. Il mio compito precipuo era di difenderlo da inutili angustie.

Fui stupito che Guido non prendesse alcuna disposizione per Carmen, perché sapevo che aveva formalmente promesso alla moglie di congedarla. Io credevo che Ada sarebbe ritornata a casa dopo qualche mese come la prima volta. Ma essa, senza passare per Trieste, si recò invece a soggiornare in una villetta sul Lago Maggiore ove poco dopo Guido le portò i bambini.
