ある ところ に 、牛 を 持っている 百姓 が ありました 。 その 牛 は 、もう 年 を とって い ました 。 長い 年 の 間 、その 百姓 の ため に 重い 荷 を つけて 働いた のであり ます 。 そして 、いま でも 、なお 働いて いた のであった けれど 、なんにしても 、年 を とって しまって は 、ちょうど 人間 と 同じ ように 、若い 時分 ほど 働く こと は できなかった のです 。 この 無理 も ない こと を 、百姓 は あわれ と は 思い ませ ん でした 。 そして 、いま まで 自分たち の ために 働いて くれた 牛 を 、大事に して やろう とは 思わなかった のであり ます 。 「こんな 役 に たたない やつ は 、早く 、どこか へ やってしまって 、若い じょうぶな 牛 と 換えよう 。」 と 思い ました 。 秋 の 収穫 も すんで しまう と 、来年 の 春 まで 、地面 は 、雪 や 、霜 の ため に 堅く 凍って しまい ます ので 、牛 を 小舎 の 中 に 入れて おいて 、休ま して やら なければ なりません 。 この 百姓 は 、せめて 牛 を そうして 、春 まで 休ま せて やろう と も せ ずに 、「冬 の 間 こんな 役 に たたない やつ を 、食べ さして おくの は むだな 話 だ 。」 と いって 、たとえ 、もの こそ いわない けれど 、なんでも よく 人間 の 感情 は わかる ものを 、この おとなしい 牛 を ひどい めに あわせた のであり ます 。 ある 、 うす 寒い 日 の こと 、 百姓 は 、 話 に 、 馬 の 市 が 四 里 ばかり 離れた 、 小さな 町 で 開かれた と いう こと を 聞いた ので 、 喜んで 、 小 舎 の 中 から 、 年 とった 牛 を 引き出して 、 若い 牛 と 交換 して くる ため に 町 へ と 出かけた のでした 。 百姓 は 、自分たち と いっしょに 苦労 を した 、この 年 を とった 牛 に 分かれる の を 、格別 悲しい とも 感じなかった のである が 、牛 は 、さも この 家 から 離れて ゆく のが 悲しそうに 見えて 、なんとなく 、歩く 足つき も 鈍かった のでありました 。 昼 過ぎ ごろ 、百姓 は その 町 に 着きました 。 そして 、すぐ に その 市 の 立っている ところ へ 、牛 を 引いて いきました 。 すると 、そこ に は 、自分 の 欲しい と 思う 若い 馬 や 、強そうな 牛 が 幾種類 と なく たくさんに つながれて いまし た 。 方々 から 百姓 たち が 、ここ へ 押し寄せて きて い ました 。 中 に は 、脊 の 高い りっぱな 馬 を 買って 、喜んで 引いて ゆく 男 も ありました 。 彼 は 、うらやまし そうに 、その 男 の 後ろ姿 を 見送った のです 。 自分 は 、馬 に しよう か 、牛 に しよう か と まどい ました が 、しまい に は 、この 連れて きた 年 とった 牛 に 、あまり たくさんの 金 を 打たなくて 交換 できる なら 、牛 でも 、馬 でも 、どちら でも いい と 思った のでした 。 あちら に いったり 、こちら に きたり して 、自分 の 気にいった 馬 や 、牛 が ある と 、その 値段 を 百姓 は 聞いて いました 。 そして 、「高い なあ 、とても 俺 に は 買わ れ ねえ 。」 と 、彼 は 、頭 を かしげて いったり しました 。 「おまえ さん 、よく いま まで 、こんな 年 を とった 牛 を 持って いなさった もの だ 。 だれ も 、こんな 牛 に 、いくら おまえ さん が 金 を つけた って 喜んで 交換 する もの は ある めえ 。」 と 、黄銅 の きせる を くわえて 、すぱすぱ たばこ を すい ながら 、さげすむ ように いった 博労 も ありました 。 そんな とき は 、百姓 は 、振り向いて 後ろ に 首 垂れて いる 、自分 の 牛 を にくにくしげに にらみました 。 「そんな ざま を して いる から 、俺 まで 、こうして ばかに される で ねえ か 。」 と 、 百姓 は 怒って い いました 。 また 、彼 は 、ほか の 場所 へ いって 、一頭 の 若い 牛 を 指さし ながら 、いくら お金 を 自分 の つれてきた 牛 に つけたら 、換えて くれる か と 聞いて いました 。 その 博 労 は 、もっと 、前 の 男 より も 冷淡 でありました 。 「おまえ さん 、ここ に たくさん 牛 も いる けれど 、こんなに おい ぼれて いる 牛 は なかろう ぜ 。」 と 答えた ぎり で 、てんで 取り 合い ませ ん でした 。 しかたなく 、百姓 は 、年 とった 牛 を 引き ながら 、あちらこちら と 迷って い ました 。 しまい に は 、もう どんな 牛 でも 、馬 でも いい から 、この 牛 と 交換 し たい もの だ 。 自分 の 牛 より 、よく ない 牛 や 、馬 は 、一頭 だって 、ここ に は いない だろう と 思った ほど 、自分 の 牛 が つまらなく 思われた のであり ます 。 日 が 暮れ かかる と 、いつのまにか 、市場 に 集まって いた 百姓 たち の 影 は 散って しまい ました 。 その人 たち の 中 に は 、 持って きた 金 より 、 牛 や 、 馬 の 値 が 高い ので 買わ なくて 帰った もの も あった が 、たいてい は 、 欲しい と 思った 牛 や 、 馬 を 買って 、 引いて いった のであります 。 独り 、この 百姓 だけ は 、まだ 、まごまご して い ました 。 そして 、最後に 、もう 一人 の 博労 に 掛け合って い ました 。 「俺 は 、この 若い 馬 が 欲しい のだが 、この 牛 に 、いくら 金 を 打ったら 換えて くれる か ？ 」と 、百姓 は いい ました 。 その 博 労 は 、百姓 より も 年 を とって い ました 。 そして 、おとなし そうな 人 で ありました 。 しみじみ と 、 百姓 と 、 うしろ に 引かれて きた 牛 と を ながめて いました が 、 「 いま 換えた ので は 、 両方 で 損 が ゆく 。 金 さえ たくさん つけて もらえば 、換え ない こと も ない が 、この 冬 、うんと まぐさ を 食わして 休ま せて おやんなさい 。 そう すれば 、まだ 来年 も 働か さ れ る 。 だいいち 、これ まで 使って 、この 冬 に かかって 、知らねえ 人 の 手 に 渡す のは かわいそうだ 。」 と いい ました 。 やむ を 得ず 、百姓 は 、また 牛 を 引いて 我が家 に 帰ら なければ ならなかった のです 。 「ほんとうに 、ばかばかしい こと だ 。」 百姓 は 、ぶつぶつ 口 の 中 で こごと を いい ながら 、牛 を 引いて ゆきました 。 朝 の うち から 曇った 、寒い 日 であった が 、晩方 から かけて 、雪 が ちらちら と 降り だし ました 。 百姓 は 、日 は 暮れ かかる し 、路 は 遠い のに 、雪 が 降って は 、歩け なく なって しまう 心配 から 、気持ち が いらいら して いました 。 「さあ 早く 歩け 、この 役たたずめ が ！ 」と どなって 、牛 の しり を 綱 の 端 で 、ピシリピシリ と なぐり ました 。 牛 は いっしょうけんめい に 精 を 出して 歩いて いる のです けれど 、そう 早く は 歩け ませ ん でした 。 雪 は ますます 降って きました 。 そして 、道 の 上 が もう わから なく なって しまい 、一方 に は 日 が まったく 暮れて しまった のであり ます 。 「こんな ばかなめ を 見る くらい なら 、こんな 日 に 出てくる ので なかった 。」 と 、百姓 は 、気持ち が 急ぐ に つけて 、罪 も ない 牛 を しかったり 、綱 で 打ったり した のであり ます 。 この 町 から 、自分 の 村 へ ゆく 道 は 、たびたび 歩いた 道 であって 、よく わかって いる はずでありました が 、雪 が 降る と 、まったく 、あたり の 景色 は 変わって しまい ました 。 どこ が 、田 やら 、圃 やら 、見当 が つか なく なり ました 。 そして 、暗く なる と 、もう 一足 も 歩け なかった のです 。 百姓 は 、こう なる と 、牛 を しかる 元気 も 出 なく なり ました 。 たとえ 、いくら 牛 を しかって も なぐって も 、どう する こと も でき なかった から であり ます 。 「さ 、困って しまった 。」 と いって 、ぼんやり 手綱 を 握った まま 、百姓 は 道 の 上 に たたずんで い ました 。 いまごろ 、だれ も この 道 を 通る もの は ありませ ん でした 。 天気 が 悪く なる と 、帰る 人 たち は 急いで 、とっくに 帰って しまい ました 。 また 、朝 の うち から 天気 の 変わり そうな の を 気遣って 、出る 人 も 見合わせて いた ので 、日の 暮れた 原 中 で は 、一人 の 影 も 見え なかった のであり ます 。 百姓 は 腹 が すいて くる し 、体 は 寒く なって 、目 を いくら 大きく 開けて も 、だんだん あたり は 暗く 、見えなく なって くる ばかりでした 。 彼 は 、どう なる か と 思い ました 。 道 を 迷って 、小川 の 中 に でも 落ち込んだ なら 、牛 と いっしょに 凍え死んで しまわなければならぬ と 思い ました 。 百姓 は 、まったく 泣き たく なり ました 。 ことに 、「ほんとうに 、今日 こなければ よかった 。 来年 の 春 まで 、この 牛 を 飼って おく こと に 、最初 から きめて しまえば よかった 。 あの 年 とった 博 労 の いった の は ほんとうの こと だ 。 いま 、この 寒さ に 向かって 、他人 の 手 に 渡す のは かわいそうだ 。」 こう 思う と 、百姓 は 、振り向いて 、後ろ から 黙って ついてくる 黒い 牛 を 見て 、かわいそうに 思い ました 。 牛 の 脊中 に も 、冷たい 白い 雪 が かかって い ました 。 「来年 の 春 まで は 置いて やる ぞ 。 だが 、今夜 この 野原 で ふたり が 凍え死に を して しまえば 、それ まで だ 。 俺 は 、もう 、もう 一足 も 歩け ない 。 おまえ は 道 が わかって いる の か ？ たびたび この 道 を 通った こと も ある から 、もし おまえ に わかった なら 、どうか 俺 を 乗せて 、家 まで つれて いって くれない か ？ 」百姓 は 、牛 に 頼みました 。 彼 は 、最後に 牛 の 助け を 借りる より ほかに 、どう する こと も できなかった のであり ます 。 牛 は 、百姓 を 乗せて 、暗い 道 を はう ように 雪 の 降る 中 を 歩いて いきました 。 夜 が 更けて から 、牛 は 、我が家 の 門口 に きて 止まりました 。 百姓 は 、はじめて 生きた 心地 が して 、明るい 暖かな 家 の 内 に 入る こと が できた のでした 。 百姓 は 、その 晩 、牛 に は いつも より か たくさんに まぐさ を やり ました 。 自分 も 酒 を 飲んで 、床 の 中 に 入って 眠り ました 。 明くる 日 に なる と 、もう 、百姓 は 、昨夜 の 苦しかった こと など は 忘れて しまい ました 。 そして 、これ から も ある こと だ が 、ああして 道 に 迷った とき は 、なまなか 自分 で 手綱 を 引かずに 、牛 や 馬 の 脊 に またがって 、つれてきてもらう のが なにより りこうな やり方 だ と 思いました 。 彼 は 、あの とき 、心 で 牛 に 誓った こと も 、忘れて しまい ました 。 そして 、どうかして 、早く 年 若い 牛 を 手に入れたい と 思っていました 。 ちょうど その 時分 、同じ 村 に 住んで いる 百姓 で 、牛 を いい 値 で 売った と いう 話 を ききました 。 町 へ どんどん 牛 が 送ら れる ので 、町 へ きて いる 博労 が 、いい 値 で 手当たりしだい に 買って いる という 話 を 聞いた のであり ます 。 彼 は 、さっそく 、その 百姓 の ところ へ 出かけて いきました 。 「おまえ さん の 家 の 牛 は 、いくら で 売れた か 。」 と きき ました 。 すると 、その 百姓 は 、「なんでも 、大きな 牛 ほど 値 に なる ようだ から 、おまえさん の 家 の 牛 は 年 を とって いる が 、体 が 大きい から いい 値 に なる だろう 。」 と いい ました 。 彼 は 、もし 自分 の 牛 が 売られて いったら 、どう なる だろう と いう 牛 の 運命 など は 考え ません でした 。 ただ 、思って いる より は いい 値 に なり さえ すれば 、いま の うち に 牛 を 売って しまって 、金 に して おく ほうが いい と 思い ました 。 そして 、来年 の 春 に なったら 、若い 、いい 牛 を 買えば 自分 は もっと しあわせに なる と 思い ました 。 さっそく 、彼 は 、町 へ 牛 を 引いて いって 売る こと に いたし ました 。 こうして 百姓 は 、ふたたび ぬかるみ の 道 を 牛 を 引いて 、町 の 方 へ と いった のです 。 おそらく 、今度 ばかり は 、ふたたび 、牛 は この 家 に 帰って くる と は 思わ れ ませ ん でした 。 百姓 は 、道 を 歩き ながら 、「あの 家 の 牛 でさえ 、それほどに 売れた のだ から 、あの 牛 より は ずっと 大きい 俺 の 牛 は 、もっと いい 値 で 売れる だろう 。」 と 考えて い ました 。 その とき 、牛 は 、何事 も 知ら ぬ ふうに 、ただ 黙って 、百姓 の 後ろ から 、ついて 歩いて いきました 。 町 へ 着き ました 。 そして 、百姓 は 、博労 に あって 、自分 の 牛 を 売り ました 。 ほんとうに 、彼 が 思った より は 、もっと いい 値 で 売れた のであり ます 。 百姓 は 、金 を 受け取る と 、長年 苦労 を 一つ に してきた 牛 が 、さびしそうに 後 に 残さ れ ている の を 見向き も せずに 、さっさと 出ていって しまい ました 。 「大もうけ を した ぞ 。」 と 、彼 は 、こおどり を し ました 。 百姓 は 、これ が 牛 と 一生 の お別れ である こと も 忘れて しまって 、なにか 子供 ら に 土産 を 買って いって やろう と 思い ました 。 それ で 、小間物屋 に 入って 、らっぱ に 、笛 に お馬 に 、太鼓 を 買いました 。 二人 の 子供 ら に 、 二 つ ずつ 分けて やろう と 思った ので あえ います 。 この 日 も 、また 寒い 日 で ありました 。 百姓 は 、たびたび 入った 居酒屋 の 前 を 通りかかる と 、つい 金 を 持っている ので 、一杯 やろう という 気持ち に なり ました 。 彼 は 、居酒屋 の のれん を くぐって 、ベンチ に 腰 を かけました 。 そして 、そこ に きあわしている 人たち を 相手に しながら 酒 を 飲みました 。 しまい に は 、舌 が 自由 に まわら ない ほど 、酔って しまい ました 。 戸 の 外 を 寒い 風 が 吹いて い ました 。 いつのまにか 日 は 暮れて しまった のであり ます 。 「今日 は 、牛 を 引いて いない から 世話 が ない 。 俺 一人 だ から 、のろのろ 歩く 必要 は ない 。 いくら でも 早く 歩いて みせる 。 三 里 や 四 里 の 道 は 、一 走り に 走って みせる 。」 と 、自分 で 元気 を つけて は 、早く 帰ら なければ ならぬ こと も 忘れて 、酒 を 飲んで い ました 。 彼 は 、燈火 が ついた ので びっくり し ました 。 しかし 酔って いる ので 、あくまで おちついて 、すこしも あわて ませ ん でした 。 やっと 、彼 は 、その 居酒屋 から 外 に 出ました 。 ふらふら と 歩いて 、町 を 出 はずれて から 、さみしい 田舎 道 の 方 へ と 歩いて いきました 。 牛 を 売って しまって 、百姓 は 、まったく 身軽 でありました 。 しかし 、いま まで は 、たとえ 彼 が 道 で ない ところ を いこう と しても 、牛 は 怪しんで 、立ち止まった まま 歩きませんでした 。 いま は 、彼 が 道 を 迷って も 、それ を 教えて くれる もの は なかった のであり ます 。 百姓 は 、あちら へ ふらふら 、こちら へ ふらふら と 歩いている うちに 、ちがった 道 の 方 へ いってしまいました 。 その うち に 、 一 本 の 大きな 木 の 根 もと に つまずきました 。 「やあ 、なんだい ？ 」と いって 、百姓 は ほおかぶり を した 顔 で 仰ぎます と 、大きな 黒い 木 が 星 晴れの した 空 に 突っ立って い ました 。 懐 に 入って いる 財布 や 、腰 に つけて いる 子供 ら へ の 土産 を 落として は ならない と 、酔って いながら 、彼 は 幾たび も 心 の 中 で 思い ました 。 そして 、たしかに 落とした 気遣い は ない と 思う と 、安心 して 、そのまま 木 の 根 に 腰 を かけて しまい ました 。 彼 は 、ほんとうに いい 気持ち で ありました 。 ほお を 吹く 風 も 、寒く は なかった のであり ます 。 あたり を 見まわす と 、いつのまにか 、晩春 に なって いました 。 まだ 、野原 に は 咲き 残った 花 も ある けれど 、一面に この 世の中 は 緑 の 色 に 包まれて います 。 田 の 中 で は 、かえる の 声 が 夢 の ように きこえて 、圃 は すっかり 耕さ れ て しまい 、麦 は ぐんぐん 伸びて い ました 。 彼 は 、このごろ 手に入れた 若い 牛 の こと を 考えながら 、土手 に よりかかって 空を ながめて います と 、野の はて の 方 から 、大きな 月 が 上がりかけました 。 空 は 、よく 晴れて いて 、月 は まんまるくて 、昼間 の ように 、あたり を 照らして います 。 「まあ 、あんなに 若い 、いい 牛 は 、この 村 でも 持っている もの は たくさん ない 。 みんな 俺 の 牛 を 見て は 、うらやま ない もの は 一人 も ない ……。」 と 、彼 は 、いい 機嫌 で 独り言 を して い ました 。 する と 、たちまち 、あちら の 方 から 太鼓 の 音 が きこえ 、笛 の 音 が して 、なんだか 、一時 に にぎやかに なり ました 。 「不思議 だ 、もう 日 が 暮れた のに 、なに が ある のだろう ？ 」と 、彼 は 思って 、その方 を 見守って い ました 。 村 じゅう の 人 が 総出 で 、なにか は や したてて い ます 。 そのうち 、こちら へ 黒い もの が 、あちら の 森 の 中 から 逃げる ように やってきました 。 見る と 、自分 の 家 の 牛 で あり ます 。 牛 は 、いつのまに 小 舎 の 中 から 森 に 出た もの か 、その 脊 中 に は 二 人 の 子供 たち が 乗って 、一人 は 太鼓 を たたき 、一人 は 笛 を 吹いて いまし た 。 「いつのまに 、子供 たち は 、あんなに 上手に なったろう ？ 」と 、彼 は 感心 して 、耳 を 傾け ました 。 「きっと 、子供 ら は 、俺 を 探し に やってきた のだろう 。 いま じきに 俺 を 見つける に ちがいない 。 そして 、ここ へ きて 、俺 の 前 で 、太鼓 を 打ち 、笛 を 吹いて みせる に ちがいない 。 俺 は 、子供 ら が 見つける まで 、黙って 眠った ふり を して いよう ……。」 と 思い ました 。 太鼓 を たたいたり 、笛 を 吹いたり している 、二人 の 子供たち の 姿 は 、月 が いい ので 、はっきり と わかりました 。 やがて 、牛 は 、彼 の いる 前 へ やってきました 。 子供 たち が 、 自分 を 見つけて 、 いまにも 飛び降りる だろう と 思って いました のに 、 牛 は 子供 たち を 乗せた まま 、 さっさと 自分 の 前 を 通り すぎて 、 あちら へ いって しまいました 。 遠く に 、池 が 見えて い ました 。 池 の 水 は 、なみなみ と していて 、その 上 に 、月 の 光 が 明るく 輝いて い ました 。 若い 牛 は 、ずんずん 、その方 に 向かって 歩いて ゆきました 。 彼 は 、驚いて 起き上がり ました 。 なに 用 が あって 、子供 たち は 、池 の 方 に 歩いて 行く の か ？ 自分 は ここ に いる のに ！ 「おうい 、おうい 。」 彼 は 、牛 を 呼び止めよう と し ました 。 しかし 、二人 の 子供たち が 笛 を 吹いたり 、太鼓 を たたいたり している ので 、彼 の 呼び声 は 、子供たち に は わからなかった のです 。 百姓 が このごろ 手 に 入れた ばかりの 、若い 黒い 牛 は 、水 を 臆せず に ずんずん と 池 の 中 に 向かって 走る ように 歩いて いきました 。 この とき 、百姓 は 、後悔 し ました 。 これ が 前 の 年 とった 牛 であったら 、こんな 乱暴 は し なかろう 。 そして 、自分 が こんなに 心配 する こと は なかったろう 。 あの 年 とった 牛 は 、一 度 、暗い 雪 の 降る 夜 、自分 を 助けた こと が あった ――あの 牛 なら 、子供 を 乗せて おいても 安心 されていた のに ――と 思い ながら 。 彼 は 、大いに 気 を もんで い ました 。 彼 は 、もはや 、じっと して 見て いる こと が できずに 、その後 を 追って いきました 。 すると 、すでに 、牛 は 、自分 の 子供 を 乗せた まま 池 の 中 へ どんどん と 入って いきました 。 「どう する 気 だろう 。」 百姓 は 、たまげて しまって 、さっそく 裸 に なり ました 。 そして 、自分 も 池 の ふち まで 走って いった とき は 、もう どこ に も 牛 の 影 は 見え なかった のであり ます 。 彼 は 、のど が 渇いて 、しかた が ありませ ん でした 。 草 を 分けて 池 の 水 を 手 に すくって 、幾たび と なく 飲みました 。 この とき 、太鼓 の 音 と 、笛 の 音 は 、遠く 、池 を 越して 、あちら の 月 の 下 の 白い もや の 中 から 聞こえて きました 。 あの 牛 は 、どうして 水音 も たて ず に 、この 池 を 泳いで いったろう ？ 百姓 は 、とにかく 子供 たち が 無事な ので 、安心 し ました 。 彼 は 、また 、そこ に うずくまりました 。 すると 、心地よい 春 の 風 は 、顔 に 当たって 、月 の 光 が 、ますます あたり を 明るく 照らした のであり ます 。 やっと 夜 が 明け ました 。 百姓 は 驚き ました 。 小さな 、川 の 中 に 体 が 半分 落ちて 、自分 は 道 で も ない ところ に 倒れて いた から です 。 帯 は 解けて 、財布 は どこ へ か なくなり 、子供たち の 土産 に 買ってきた 笛 や 太鼓 は 、田 の 中 に 埋まって いました 。 少々 隔たった ところ に は 、高い 大きな 松 の 木 が ありました 。 木 の 上 の 冬 空 は 、雲 ゆき が 早くて 、じっと 下界 を 見おろして い ました 。 百姓 の 家 は 、ここ から まだ 遠かった のです 。
