=== 敬語 === === Honorific Language ===

日語 最 獨特 的 地方 也許 就 是 : 要 在 不同 的 社交 場合 ， 使用 不同 的 字句 結構 。 Perhaps the most unique aspect of the Japanese language is that different sentence structures must be used in different social situations.

沒有 一種 我 學 過 的 語言 ， 會 因著 環境 不同 而 產生 這麼 不 同 的 詞彙 和 結構 的 使用 。 There is no other language I have learned that has such a wide variety of vocabulary and structural usage depending on the environment.

中國 的 書面 語言 被 引入 到 日本 ， 只不過 是 一千五百多 年 前 的 事 ， 隨 之 而 來 的 還有 中國 的 文字 、 科技 和 佛教 。 The written language of China was introduced to Japan just over fifteen hundred years ago, along with Chinese characters, technology, and Buddhism.

在 奈良 和 東京 ， 有 不少 宏偉 壯觀 的 木造 建築 ， 其中 有些 還是 全世界 現存 最 古老 、 最 巨大 的 木 式 建築 。 In Nara and Tokyo, there are many magnificent wooden buildings, some of which are among the oldest and largest wooden structures still existing in the world.

這些 建築 技術 源自 古 中國 的 黃河 文明 ， 不但 被 保存 得 很 好 ， 而且 還 加以 發揚光大 。 These architectural techniques originated from the Yellow River civilization of ancient China, and they have not only been well preserved but also further developed.

=== 日本 株式會社 === === Japanese Corporation ===

七十年代 與 八十年代 初期 的 日本 ， 與 今天 並不 相同 ， 是 個 比較 封閉 的 社會 。 Japan in the 1970s and early 1980s was quite different from today; it was a relatively closed society.

我 在 日本 的 前 四年 ， 是 在 加拿大 大使館 擔任 首要 秘書 。 In my first four years in Japan, I served as the chief secretary at the Canadian Embassy.

這 期間 ， 我 參與 了 一個 引介 「 北美 木 結構 建築 方式 」 的 計劃 給 日本 。 During this period, I participated in a project introducing "North American Wood Frame Construction" to Japan.

那 時節 正 遇上 日本 生活水準 急速 改良 ， 住宅 建築 的 年產量 也 因此 隨著 大幅 提高 。 At that time, Japan was experiencing a rapid improvement in living standards, which also significantly increased the annual output of residential construction.

我 很 喜歡 大使館 的 工作 ， 因為 我 能 與 日 方 的 有關 人員 密切 合作 ， 尤其 是 建設 省 的 官員 和 東京 木材 青年 俱樂部 的 成員 ， 他們 都 參與 了 推廣 北美 木結構 建築 方式 的 工作 。 I really enjoyed working at the embassy because I could closely collaborate with relevant personnel from the Japanese side, especially officials from the Ministry of Construction and members of the Tokyo Wood Youth Club, who were all involved in promoting North American wood frame construction.

我 原本 計劃 回 大學 去 攻讀 「 亞洲 研究 」 ， 後來 卻 被 「 西寶 木材 公司 」 ( SeaboardLumberSales ) 所 吸收 ， 幫助 他們 在 日本 成立 一家 子公司 。 I originally planned to return to university to study 'Asian Studies', but later I was recruited by Seaboard Lumber Sales to help them establish a subsidiary in Japan.

西寶 木材 公司 是 加拿大 主要 的 木材 產品 供貨 商 ， 若 不是 我 懂得 日語 ， 便 不 可能 有 機會 得到 這 份 工作 。 Seaboard Lumber Sales is a major supplier of wood products in Canada, and if I hadn't known Japanese, I would not have had the opportunity to get this job.

我 從 一九七四 到 一九七七 年 ， 都 在 日本 的 西寶 木材 公司 工作 ， 之後 便 攜 同 家人 回到 溫哥華 。 I worked at Seaboard Lumber Sales in Japan from 1974 to 1977, and then returned to Vancouver with my family.

現在 ， 時代 已經 改變 了 ， 日本 的 造紙 公司 已 開始 在 世界 各地 建立 造紙廠 ， 包括 加拿大 在 內 。 Now, times have changed, and Japanese paper companies have begun to establish paper mills around the world, including in Canada.

1980 年代 ， 在 美國 貿易 自由化 的 壓力 下 ， 日本 電信 電話 公社 ( NTT ) 終於 允許 外國 的 紙 張 生產商 參加 電話 目錄 用 紙 的 競 標 。 In the 1980s, under the pressure of trade liberalization in the United States, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) finally allowed foreign paper manufacturers to participate in the bidding for telephone directory paper.

比較 困難 的 是 處理 日本 廠商 和 消費者 之間 的 親密 關係 ， 我們 常常 形容 這種 情形 是 「 日本 株式會社 」 ( Japan Incorporated ) 。 The more difficult part is dealing with the close relationships between Japanese manufacturers and consumers, which we often describe as 'Japan Incorporated'.

日本 的 紙張 生產商 ( 也就是 我們 的 競爭者 ) ， 都 有 NTT 的 退休 高層 主管 ( 也就是 我們 的 共同 客戶 ) 做為 他們 的 董事 。 Japanese paper manufacturers (who are our competitors) have retired senior executives from NTT (who are our common clients) as their board members.

此外 ， 我們 經常 倚賴 的 一家 負責 「 打通 關係 」 的 媒介 公司 ， 他們 的 老闆 和 經營者 是 NTT 的 退休 員工 。 In addition, we often rely on a media company responsible for 'establishing connections', whose owner and operators are retired employees of NTT.

這時 ， 我 日語 的 閱讀 和 表達 能力 不但 幫 助 我 處理 這 世界 的 各種 複雜 關係 ， 更為 我們 加拿大 的 紙製品 開拓 了 一個 新 市場 。 At this time, my Japanese reading and expression skills not only helped me handle various complex relationships in this world, but also opened up a new market for our Canadian paper products.

日本 的 紙 製品 市場 ， 是 由 少數 大 廠商 和 用戶 所 控制 ， 因此 很 容易 造成 半 壟斷 性 的 經營 方式 。 The Japanese paper products market is controlled by a few large manufacturers and users, which easily leads to a semi-monopolistic business model.

但 木材 業 的 情形 則 不同 。 However, the situation in the timber industry is different.

木材 業 包括 了 數量 龐大 、 而且 遵循 傳統 的 零售商 、 批發商 、 還有 建築商 。 The timber industry includes a large number of traditional retailers, wholesalers, and builders.

奇怪 的 是 ， 由於 參與者 眾 ， 這 傳統 色彩 仍 很 濃厚 的 日本 木材 業 ， 反倒 比 先進 、 以 大 企業 為 主 的 造紙 業 要 開放 得 多 。 Strangely, due to the large number of participants, the Japanese timber industry, which still has a strong traditional character, is actually much more open than the advanced, large enterprise-dominated paper industry.

我 與 日本 木材 貿易 的 關係 ， 成 了 我 人生 經歷 中 極 重要 的 一部 份 。 My relationship with the Japanese timber trade has become an extremely important part of my life experience.

藉 此 ， 我 能 直接 體認 到 日本 人 對 大自然 的 摯愛 ， 還有 他們 在 產品 設計 與 製造 上 精益求精 的 態度 。 Through this, I can directly experience the Japanese people's deep love for nature, as well as their meticulous attitude towards product design and manufacturing.

他們 十分 敬重 傳統 的 建築 方法 和 木匠 們 的 技藝 ， 也 對 木材 十分 瞭解 並 具有 鑑賞 能力 。 They have great respect for traditional building methods and the craftsmanship of carpenters, and they also have a deep understanding of wood and possess appreciation skills.

這 種種 ， 都 留給 我 極 深遠 的 影響 。 All of this has left a profound impact on me.

我 也 碰到 過 日本 社會 保守 的 一面 ， 所以 我 有時 會 做出 一些 違反 常規 的 事 ， 以求 達到 我們 公司 的 目標 ， 這 常常 使 我 的 日本 對手 不悅 。 I have also encountered the conservative side of Japanese society, so sometimes I do things that go against the norm in order to achieve our company's goals, which often displeases my Japanese counterparts.

有次 ， 有 家 專門 報導 木材 貿易 消息 的 報紙 ， 還 形容 我 是 「 考夫曼 颱風 」 。 Once, there was a newspaper that specialized in reporting timber trade news, and it described me as the 'Kaufman Typhoon.'

但是 ， 我 一貫 的 感覺 是 : 日本 商人 都 能 保持 一種 敬重 的 態度 ， 即使 對 某 些 特定 的 議題 並 不 同意 。 However, my consistent feeling is that Japanese businessmen can maintain a respectful attitude, even when they disagree on certain specific issues.

互相 尊重 是 日本 社會 很 重要 的 一種 情境 ， 也 是 他們 的 社會 之所以 能夠 凝聚 、 成功 的 最大 因素 。 Mutual respect is a very important aspect of Japanese society, and it is also the biggest factor in why their society can be cohesive and successful.

適應 環境 要 學好 一種 語言 ， 你 一定 要 去 參與 、 融入 一個 國家 的 文化 ， 因為 這 使 你 在 意識 、 心境 上 都 更 能 吸收 這個 語言 。 To adapt to the environment, you must learn a language well, and you definitely need to participate and immerse yourself in a country's culture, as this allows you to absorb the language more in terms of awareness and mindset.

當然 ， 並非 所有 的 遭遇 都 令人 愉快 或 受 歡迎 ， 但 你 必須 堅持 去 做 。 Of course, not all experiences are pleasant or welcome, but you must persist in doing so.

有時候 ， 你 會 遭到 排斥 ， 只 因 你 是 外國人 。 Sometimes, you may face rejection simply because you are a foreigner.

這 並 不是 某 種 文化 獨有 的 現象 ， 而且 任何 時期 都 可能 發生 。 This is not a phenomenon unique to any particular culture, and it can happen at any time.

但是 ， 大部分 的 經歷 仍 會 是 令人 愉快 、 難忘 的 。 However, most experiences will still be pleasant and unforgettable.

像 我 在 日本 最 感到 驕傲 的 一刻 ， 就 是 參加 了 「 木場 祭 」 ， 或 「 木材 市場 節日 」 。 One moment I felt most proud in Japan was participating in the 'Kiba Matsuri' or 'Timber Market Festival'.
