Και ακαριαία, αντιλήφθηκα ότι έπρεπε να κάνω κάτι γι' αυτά. |immédiatement|j'ai réalisé||||||| And instantly, I realized that I had to do something for them.

Αυτό θα προσπαθήσω να σας περιγράψω σήμερα. This is what I will try to describe to you today. Όλα ξεκίνησαν πριν 20 χρόνια, It all started 20 years ago,

όταν στις γειτονίες μας ||quartiers| when in our neighborhoods

υποδεχθήκαμε όλα αυτά τα κύματα των μεταναστών, των προσφύγων nous avons accueilli||||||migrants|| we welcomed all these waves of immigrants, of refugees

που μέσα στις βαλίτσες τους δεν είχαν μόνο τα προβλήματά τους, that didn't just have problems in their suitcases,

αλλά κάτι πιο πολύτιμο, τα ίδια τους τα παιδιά. |||précieux||||| but also something more valuable - their own children.

Γι' αυτά δεν υπήρχε καμία πρόνοια, από κανέναν. |||||prévision|| There was no welfare for them, from nobody.

Και μ' αυτά προσπάθησα εγώ να ασχοληθώ. And I tried to deal with those things.

Η αρχή έγινε στον Εθνικό Κάτω Πατησίων, ||||||Patissia It started with Ethnikos Kato Patision,

στην πρώτη μου ομάδα μπάσκετ my first basketball team

που δούλεψα ως προπονητής. where I worked as a coach.

Εκεί, με τον φίλο μου τον Μανώλη τον Περρή There, with my friend Manolis Perris,

προσπαθήσαμε να πλησιάσουμε αυτά τα παιδιά we tried to approach those kids,

αλλά διακρίναμε ότι ήταν δύσκολο, και από την πλευρά των ομάδων |nous avons distingué||||||||| but we saw that it was very difficult, both because of the teams

που δεν ήταν έτοιμες να υποδεχτούν αυτούς τους νέους μας συμπολίτες, |||||accueillir|||||concitoyens which were not ready to welcome our new fellow citizens,

αλλά και ακόμα και από τους ίδιους τους γονείς των παιδιών. but also because of the parents themselves.

Διότι μας έβλεπαν σαν αγνώστους ||||inconnus Because they saw us like strangers,

και λέγανε, πώς να εμπιστευτούμε εμείς το παιδί μας ||||faire confiance|||| and they were reluctant to trust their children to those strangers

σε αυτούς τους αγνώστους που θέλουν να ενσωματώσουν τα παιδιά |||||||intégrer|| that want to integrate their kids into a game that is foreign to them.

σε ένα άγνωστο γι' αυτούς παιχνίδι. in a game unknown to them.

Αυτό μας προβλημάτισε. ||a préoccupé That made us think.

Κι εγώ άρχισα να πηγαίνω, And I started going,

να προσπαθώ να πλησιάσω αυτούς τους ανθρώπους από κοντά. trying to come closer to those people.

Προσπάθησα να γίνω φίλος τους, να μπω στα σπίτια τους, I tried to befriend them, go in their homes,

να μάθω τις γλώσσες τους, learn their languages,

να φάω το φαγητό τους, να μοιραστώ τα προβλήματά τους. eat their foods, share their problems.

Αλλά και αυτό δε φάνηκε αρκετό. But that wasn't enough either.

Με παρότρυνση του φίλου, του Μανώλη, |encouragement|||| After being encouraged by my friend Manolis,

άρχισα να πηγαίνω να παρακολουθώ μαθήματα κοινωνιολογίας. ||||||sociologie I started attending sociology classes

Εδώ απέναντι, στην Πάντειο. here, across the street, at Panteion University.

Κι αυτό όμως δεν ήταν αρκετό. But that wasn't enough either.

Άρχισα να παρακολουθώ μαθήματα θεολογίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών. I started attending theology classes at the University of Athens.

Κι αυτό ήταν ελλιπές. |||incomplet But that was lacking as well.

Άρχισα να πηγαίνω σε βιβλιοθήκες, να μελετάω μόνος μου γλωσσολογία |||||||||linguistique I started going to libraries, studying linguistics by myself

για να φτιάξω μια βάση δεδομένων για να μπορώ να επεξεργάζομαι |||||de données|||||traiter so I could make a database

αυτά τα πράγματα που ακούω και μαθαίνω από τους ανθρώπους. these things that I hear and learn from people.

Αλλά πάλι δεν μπορούσα να καταλάβω ακριβώς αυτό που μου λέγανε. But I still couldn't understand exactly what they were saying

Ή, πώς συμπίπτανε αυτά που άκουγα κι αυτά που διάβαζα στα βιβλία. ||tombaient||||||||| or how all that I heard coincided with what I read in the books.

Τότε άρχισα να πηγαίνω και στα καφενεία τους. Then I started going to their coffee shops.

Εκεί, στα καφενεία, There,

άρχισα να φτιάχνω μια διασταύρωση αυτών των στοιχείων, ||||croisement||| I started to cross-reference that data,

να φτιάχνω μια βάση δεδομένων, ένα εργαλείο δηλαδή, make a database, a tool,

και συνάμα, ένα εργαλείο and at the same time, a tool

για να μπορώ να επεξεργάζομαι αυτά τα πράγματα που ακούω so that I can work on the things I hear

και να έχω ένα δίκτυο να προσεγγίσω αυτά τα παιδιά. ||||réseau||approcher||| and have a network to approach these kids.

Ζώντας μαζί με αυτούς τους ανθρώπους τόσα χρόνια Living with those people all these years, I witnessed many successes.

είδα πολλές επιτυχίες. I saw many successes.

Μα είδα και αποτυχίες. But I also witnessed failures.

Εμένα με στιγμάτισαν πιο πολύ οι αποτυχίες. ||stigmatisèrent|||| I was stigmatized by the failures more. Θα σας πως ενδεικτικά τρεις. |||à titre d'exemple| I will indicatively mention three.

Μία είναι ο Γιώργος ο Ζαχαρόπουλος, One is George Zacharopoulos,

ένα παιδί που στα 15 του μπόρεσε και έπαιξε ||||||aussi| a kid that at age 15 could play for the men's team of Sporting

στην αντρική ομάδα του Σπόρτινγκ στο επαγγελματικό πρωτάθλημα της Ελλάδος, in the Sporting men's team in the Greek professional league,

αλλά επειδή δεν μπόρεσε να προσαρμοστεί |||||s'adapter but because he couldn't adapt

και να γίνει ο ίδιος αποδεκτός ως μιγάς στην κοινωνία μας, |||||acceptable||métis||| and be accepted as a biracial person in our society,

έπεσε σιγά σιγά στον κόσμο των ναρκωτικών. he slowly lost himself in drugs.

Αυτό το παιδί χάθηκε. That kid was lost.

Ένα άλλο παιδί είναι ο Μπάμπης ο Μαφούτας, Another kid is Babis Mafoutas,

ο οποίος μην έχοντας γνώσεις του νόμου, άργησε να φτιάξει τα χαρτιά του who, for the lack of knowledge of the law, delayed making his papers

Και η τρίτη, η πιο παράξενη ιστορία απ' όλες είναι ο Κώστας ο Κούλου, And the third one, the weirdest story of them all is Kostas Koulou,

ένα παιδί Έλληνας, από πατέρα της Αιθιοπίας, ||||||d'Éthiopie a Greek kid, dad from Ethiopia, ο οποίος, επειδή χάθηκε ο πατέρας του who, because his dad went missing

στον εμφύλιο πόλεμο της Αιθιοπίας, |civil||| in the Ethiopian civil war,

αλλά και χάθηκαν και τα χαρτιά του as well as his papers,

δεν μπόρεσε ποτέ να αποδείξει εδώ, στις ελληνικές αρχές ότι είναι Έλληνας. he could never prove to the Greek authorities that he's Greek.

Κι αυτό το παιδί αναγκάστηκε να φύγει, να πάει στην Αγγλία That kid had to leave, go to the UK to make a living.

για να βρει ένα κομμάτι ψωμί. to find a piece of bread.

Έχοντας όλα αυτά στις αποσκευές μου, ||||bagages| Having all that in my luggage,

και βλέποντας μπροστά μου όλα αυτά τα φαινόμενα, and seeing these wonderkids in front of me,

τα αδέλφια Αντετοκούνμπο - γιατί δεν είναι μόνο ο Γιάννης, the Antetokounmpo bros - because it's not just Giannis,

είναι ο Θανάσης, ο Κώστας και ο Αλέξης - ||Thanasis||||| it's Thanasis, Kostas and Alexis -

ήξερα ακριβώς τι έπρεπε να κάνω. I knew exactly what I had to do.

Στιγμιαία σχημάτισα στο μυαλό μου έναν τρόπο, έναν μηχανισμό instantanément|j'ai formé|||||||mécanisme I instantly designed in my mind a way, a mechanism

που θα μπορούσε να υποστηρίξει αυτά τα παιδιά για τα επόμενα χρόνια that could support those kid for the next few years

μέχρι να μπορέσουν να κορυφώσουν την προσπάθειά τους στο άθλημα. ||||culminer||||| till they could peak at their efforts in the sport.

Φυσικά, με τη βοήθεια της ομάδας στην οποία βρισκόμουν, Of course, with the help of the team where I was,

τον Φιλαθλητικό Ζωγράφου. |Philathlitikos|de Zografou Filathlitikos Zografou.

Αλλά και αυτό δεν ήταν αρκετό. But that wasn't enough either.

Γιατί τα πρώτα χρόνια που δεν υπερχόντουσαν οι επιτυχίες, ||||||venaient|| Because the first years didn't bring any success,

ήμουν αναγκαστικά ο βράχος ο οποίος δεχόμουν τις αμφιβολίες, ||||||recevais|| I had to stand my ground

τα παράπονα και από τις δύο πλευρές. |plaintes||||| complaints from both sides.

Αλλά σε αυτό ήμουν τυχερός. But I was lucky in that sense.

Διότι ως παιδί μητέρας Γερμανίδας και πατέρα Έλληνα ||enfant||||| Because as a child to a German mother and a Greek father,

είχα μάθει, πηγαίνοντας στη Γερμανία να ακούω τα μύρια όσα για την Ελλάδα, ||||||||myriades|||| I had learnt, going to Germany, to hear the worst about Greece,

και εδώ στην Ελλάδα τα μύρια όσα για τους Γερμανούς. and here in Greece, to hear the worst about the Germans. (Χειροκρότημα) (Applause)

Σήμερα, δρω ως προπονητής |||entraîneur Today,

στην περιοχή των Κάτω Πατησίων in the area of Kato Patisia

σε μια απόσταση έξι χιλιόμετρα περίπου από το κέντρο των προβλημάτων within six kilometers from the center of problems,

αλλά και των ονείρων και της δυναμικής στην Κυψέλη, ||||||dynamique|| but also from the dreams and dynamics in Kypseli,

όπου οι συνθήκες είναι πάρα πολύ δύσκολες. where the situation is very difficult.

Όταν φυσάει δεν κάνουμε προπόνηση λόγω του κρύου. We can't practice when there's wind because of the cold.

Όταν βρέχει το γήπεδο θυμίζει λιμνοθάλασσα. |||||marais When it rains, the court looks like a lagoon.

Οι εγκαταστάσεις είναι ελλιπείς, δεν έχουμε μπάλες, |installations||incomplètes|||balles The facilities are incomplete, we have no balls,

αλλά είμαστε οπλισμένοι με τα όνειρα που μας δίνουν αυτά τα παιδιά, ||armés||||||||| but we are armed with the dreams that those kids give us

και τη δύναμη. and the strength.

Σήμερα όμως έχει προστεθεί ακόμα ένα πρόβλημα. But today one more problem has been added.

Εκτός της επιβίωσης Apart from the survival -

- γιατί πολλές φορές αυτά τα παιδιά έρχονται νηστικά στην προπόνηση |||||||à jeun|| because those kids come to practice many times without having any food,

και προσπαθούμε να βρούμε τρόπους ακόμη κι εκεί να επεμβούμε - |||||||||intervenir and we try to find ways to intervene even there -

σήμερα όμως έχει προστεθεί κάτι ακόμα. today we have something more.

Είναι και τα δικά μας παιδιά, τα Ελληνόπουλα, It's also our kids, the Greek kids,

τα οποία αντιμετωπίζουν και αυτά πια το ίδιο πρόβλημα. that now face the same problem.

Ίσως, να φταίει που για τόσα πολλά χρόνια Maybe the reason is that for so many years

δεν κάναμε τίποτα για τα παιδιά των συνανθρώπων μας. |||||||de nos semblables| we didn't do anything for the children of our fellow people.
