탄광 식당에 가서 갱 속에 들어가 밤참으로 먹을 밥곽을 받아 역시 허리에 찼다. 우리는 이미 그곳 당위원장으로부터 밤 12시 교대조로 갱 속에 들어갈 것을 승낙받았었다. 새해 첫 시간 교대조가 되는 것이였다. 우리 일행은 새해 첫날 첫 시간 교대조라는 것에 깊은 의미를 가졌다. 왜냐 하면‘ 수령님의 교시 관철' 을 위해 새해 첫 시간을 탄광 갱 속에서 보낸다는 것이 대학생으로서의 본분을 다 하는 것 같은 기분이 들었기 때문이였다. 우리 일행과 다른 데서 온 몇 명 등 10명이 기분이 들떠 추운 날씨에도 아랑곳하지 않고 교대 시간이 되기 전부터 갱 입구에 나가 대기했다. 정확히 12월 31일 밤 12시, 즉 1월 1일 새해 아침 0시에 시커먼 인차가 갱 속에서 교대 성원을 태우고 올라왔다. 인차가 나타나자 우리는 반가움에 자신도 모르게 탄성을 지르며 박수를 쳤다. 그들과 바꾸어 인차에 오르면서 얼마나 긴장됐던지 한숨이 나오고 손발이 다 떨려 왔다.

우리 일행 10명을 태운 인차가 덜컹하는 소리를 내더니 곧 캄캄한 갱 속으로 미끄러지듯 내려갔다. 지척을 구별하기 힘들었지만 호기심에 가득 차 두리번거렸다. 시커먼 벽 외에는 아무것도 보이지 않았다. 인차는 끝도 없이 내려가는 것 같더니 꽤 넓은 공지에서 멈췄다. 이곳에 도착하자 모두 인차에서 내렸다. ‘이곳은 갱 입구로부터 지하 30m 되는 곳' 이라고 탄부가 설명해 주었다. 공지에는 탄차와 인차를 끌어올리는 ‘권양기'가 있고 그 권양기를 조종하는 아주머니가 일하고 있었다. 그곳에서 우리를 인솔하던 탄부의 뒤를 따라 40m(메터)를 더 내려가니 막장에 도달했다. 막장은 바깥 날씨와는 달리 훈훈하였다. 칸데라 불빛에 석탄가루가 날리는 것이 보이더니 숨을 쉬기가 꺼려졌다.

칸데라 불이 없으면 사방이 캄캄해서 어디가 어딘지 분간하기 어려웠고 옆 사람조차 알아볼 수가 없었다. 갱 속 사방은 통나무로 동발을 세웠으나 착암기 굉음 소리에 온 굴이 울리고 가끔 천장과 벽에서 석탄 덩어리가 떨어지고 물이 스며들어 무너질 것 같아 겁이 났다.

남자들이 막장 위에 파진 작은 굴로 올라가 기어다니며 곡괭이나 착암기로 석탄을 파내 우리가 있는 곳으로 와르르 쏟아 내렸다. 우리 녀자들은 2명이 한 조가 되여 석탄 쏟아지는 곳에 쇠덩이로 된 큰 밀차를 들이대고 석탄을 가득 받아서 권양기가 있는 곳까지 밀고 갔다.

후덥지근한 굴 안에서 밀차를 밀며 뛰여다니다 보니 온몸이 땀과 석탄가루에 뒤범벅이 되여 사람 꼴이 말이 아니였다.

캄캄한 굴 안에서는 시간이 얼마나 흘렀는지 알 수가 없었다. 그저 인솔 탄부가 밤참 시간이라고 알려줘서 모두들 일손을 놓고 석탄가루가 날리는 막장에서 허리에 차고 온 밥곽을 풀어 먹었다. 그 안에서는 밥까지도 까맣게 보였다. 그러나 날리는 석탄가루나 그 지저분한 주변 환경에 아랑곳하지 않고 정신없이 퍼 먹었다. 땀 흘리며 일한 뒤라 허기지고 배고팠다. 밤참이 끝나자 다시 일을 시작했다. 밤참 전에는 일하는 데 만 집중하여 시간 가는 줄 몰랐는데 밤참 뒤에는 자꾸 시간만 묻게 되고 일도 더 힘드는 것 같았으며 지루하게 느껴졌다.

어느덧 우리들의 칸데라 불빛이 흐려지기 시작했다. 거의 모두 불빛은 없어지고 벌겋게만 되여 아무것도 안 보이게 되였고 어떤 애의 것은 아예 불이 나가 버렸다. 칸데라불 바Ep리는 새로 충전하고 부터 8시간을 견딘다 한다. 시계 없이 칸데라 불만 보아도 우리가 갱 속에 들어온 지 8시간이 흐른 것을 알 수 있었다.

이윽고 교대 시간이 왔다. 우리는 인차를 타고 갱 속에서 나왔다. 교대해 들어갈 사람들이 새해 첫 새벽 작업반인 우리들을 두 줄로 서서 박수를 치며 축하해 주었다. 우리의 맨 앞에 서 있던 탄부 아저씨에게는 종이로 만든 화환을 안겼다. 굴 안에서는 잘 보이지 않아 몰랐으나 밖으로 나오는 순간 우리는 서로 마주보며 터지는 웃음을 참지 못하고 한편으로는 놀랐다.
